2019 Toyota Sequoia problems
The Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV manufactured by Toyota mainly for the North American market since 2000 for the 2001 model year, being derived from the Tundra pickup truck. It is the second largest SUV ever produced under the Toyota brand, after the Japan-exclusive, military-focused Mega Cruiser.
Previously manufactured at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana in Princeton, Indiana between 2000 and 2021, and then in Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas in San Antonio, Texas since 2022, the Sequoia is the first vehicle from a Japanese marque in the popular mainstream full-sized SUV class in North America, and initial planning done by first-generation Sequoia chief engineer Kaoru Hosokawa aimed the Sequoia directly at the Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe, Nissan Armada, and other full-size SUVs.
Up until the 2021 model year, the Sequoia was slotted between the mid-size 4Runner and the premium Land Cruiser in the North American Toyota SUV lineup. With the discontinuation of North American sales of the Land Cruiser from the 2022 model year onward, the Sequoia became the flagship SUV in Toyota's North America lineup.
As of 2021, the Sequoia is sold in the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica. It is offered in left-hand drive only.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-30
- VIN: 5TDYY5G14KS
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: My 2019 Toyota Sequoia Platinum with air suspension is leaning to the left. The driver rear measured from the center of the tire hub to the bottom of the fender is 1and 1/8 inch lower than the passenger rear. There was a similar Toyota T-SB-0179-17 with a similar issue that was issued for 2013-2016 Toyota Sequoia Platinum vehicles with air suspension. Please look into this and potentially extend the previous TSB or issue a new one to solve this issue. Thank you.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-30
- VIN: 5TDBY5G17KS
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: I took my 2019 Sequoia to Toyota of Knoxville for scheduled maintenance and was told the boots on my rack of my power steering has a leak and needs to be repaired for the cost of $2000. My Sequoia has 84,308 miles and I was told this was caused by "normal wear and tear." When I started looking into it I found a recall for 2008-2022 Sequoias with the exact same issue as mine (Toyota Recall 21TB10 or 21TA10) issued on November 22, 2021, but was told that despite my car having the same issue that it was not covered by the recall and I would have to pay for repairs to-of-pocket. Upon further research, the number one cause for leaks in power steering is age and use, again, my Sequoia is a 2019 with 84,308 miles, so neither would apply.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-02-23
- VIN: 5TDYY5G19KS
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: ON FEBRUARY 23RD, 2021, WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MILES PER HOUR ON I-40, THE MOON ROOF ON MY 2019 TOYOTA SEQUOIA INEXPLICABLY EXPLODED. IT WAS WELL BEFORE RUSH HOUR AND THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC TO SEND DEBRIS TOWARDS ME. NOTHING HIT ME. THE GLASS EXPLODED OUTWARD. THERE WAS NO OTHER DAMAGE TO THE ROOF OF MY VEHICLE.

THERE IS STILL NO REMEDY/REPLACEMENT PART AVAILABLE. TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE TIER 2 SUPPORT HAS SUGGESTED THAT I REACH OUT THROUGH NHTSA FOR ASSISTANCE IN EXPEDITING A SOLUTION THROUGH TOYOTA MANAGEMENT. IF THIS KNOWN DEFECTIVE PART FAILS DURING ONE OF THOSE PROCESSES IT COULD BE CATASTROPHIC. WE PURCHASED THESE VEHICLES NEW FROM A MANUFACTURER WE BELIEVED COULD SERVE THE RELIABILITY NEEDS OF OUR FLEET. WHILE WE UNDERSTAND THAT THERE ARE ALWAYS UNKNOWN POSSIBILITIES, WE ARE DISAPPOINTED THAT A REMEDY IS STILL NOT AVAILABLE, AND WE HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO OBTAIN A COMMITMENT FOR AN EXPEDITED REMEDY TO, WHAT FOR US, IS A CRITICAL CONCERN. AGAIN, AS SUGGESTED, BY TOYOTA CUSTOMER SUPPORT, WE ARE REQUESTING ASSISTANCE IN PUSHING FOR AN EXPEDITED REMEDY. My 2018 Sequioa has been flawless, even after driving it for almost 5,000 miles. Its gas mileage is even better than my previous 2013 model. While I did experience a problem with the door hinge on my 2013 Sequioa after 80,000 miles, I believe Toyota should consider manufacturing a heavy-duty hinge. The 2018 model boasts impressive design, handling, performance, and quality. In contrast, I have owned six Chevy Suburbans that fell apart after only 50,000 miles. Despite the Suburban's poor performance, I still only get 17 MPG while driving it, and approximately 18 MPG on the highway. Although I did manage to get over 20 MPG on one tank of gas while driving on the highway, I believe it was due to the wind pushing me. Overall, I absolutely love my truck.

I'm so glad to hear that you love your Sequoia! The 5.7 liter engine is definitely powerful enough to tow whatever you need. Plus, there's tons of cargo space inside, especially if you lower the rear seats. I understand that the gas mileage could be better, but with a 5.7 liter engine, you don't really expect great gas mileage. Haha!

After buying my Sequoia, I had to drive about a hundred miles. The first things I noticed when leaving my neighborhood were the swaying of the vehicle going side to side when making a turn with a drainage ditch. I have two turns that this effect happens on. The front end dives left or right pretty deep on any turn, but more so with drainage ditches. I also noticed how the crosswind gusts push on either side of the Sequoia, causing a swaying effect. So, you probably figured it out by now, I replaced the weak original sway bars with the Toyota TRD sway bars (front and back). I am very happy with the results. There is less sway, and I'm able to make turns faster. I also noticed the passenger sun visor drooping. Yes, I am very happy with my Sequoia now that I upgraded the sway bars. The 8-month update: My wife is the main driver, and she says, 'We are never going to get rid of this car' (SUV). She feels safe. The turning radius on this Sequoia is surprisingly small. The engine power is quick. Road noise, for the most part, is quiet. You can't hide the imperfection of the road. So, as I write this, I am also in agreement with my wife. We like this monster. The one thing I want to change is the height. The Sequoia appears to be too low.
-
When I bought the SUV, I thought it was just going to be another ride, but boy was I wrong! The Sequoia turned out to be the best-priced vehicle I own, and I wouldn't trade it for anything else.
-
I really love my new Sequoia, but the only downside was the long wait!

I have a 2019 TRD and I absolutely love the body style! However, I do wish that the stereo screen and system were better, especially considering the price I paid. The system is not up to par with what I had in my Highlander. It seems that Toyota is lagging behind in terms of technology when it comes to the Sequoia. Interestingly, my husband has a 2017 Ram with a much better system! Overall, I am a loyal Toyota customer, but I do hope they improve their technology in the future.

I recently purchased a 2019 Sequoia Limited, but unfortunately, I have found the leather seats to be quite uncomfortable. Additionally, I was surprised to find that there is no gas cap lever located next to the driver's seat, which seems like an outdated feature. Instead, I have to manually open the gas cap from the outside, which is inconvenient and potentially unsafe. I also had trouble syncing my mobile phone with Entune, as the integration was not very smooth. Finally, I was disappointed to discover that there is no armrest by the front seats. Overall, I feel that Toyota may have cut corners to save money when designing this SUV, and I am not entirely satisfied with my purchase.

I recently rented a Sequoia for a week and found it to be an average vehicle in terms of quality, power, handling, and overall build. The interior was similar to what you would find in any entry-level sport utility vehicle. However, I did find the ride to be a bit unbalanced and not as compliant as some comparable models such as the Tahoe, Denali, Explorer, or Expedition. In my opinion, it felt more like driving a 3/4 ton pickup truck than a comfortable SUV. Overall, I would not personally consider purchasing this vehicle.

When this version of the Sequoia was released, George W. Bush was President (2007). It seems like Toyota is ready for a change. Although I loved my 2006 Sequoia, I think this generation is not as visually appealing. The dashboard and tech features are outdated, and the plastic interior could use an upgrade. I believe Toyota has the potential to do better and I look forward to seeing what they come up with next!

I leased the vehicle recently, but unfortunately experienced repeated failures with multiple safety sensors such as rear cross traffic, blind spot, active cruise control, and front collision radar. Despite this setback, I am confident that the dealer will work with Toyota to resolve the issue. While this experience has been disappointing, I remain optimistic about Toyota's reliability and look forward to a positive resolution.
