2005 Toyota Sequoia problems
The Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV manufactured by Toyota mainly for the North American market since 2000 for the 2001 model year, being derived from the Tundra pickup truck. It is the second largest SUV ever produced under the Toyota brand, after the Japan-exclusive, military-focused Mega Cruiser.
Previously manufactured at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana in Princeton, Indiana between 2000 and 2021, and then in Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas in San Antonio, Texas since 2022, the Sequoia is the first vehicle from a Japanese marque in the popular mainstream full-sized SUV class in North America, and initial planning done by first-generation Sequoia chief engineer Kaoru Hosokawa aimed the Sequoia directly at the Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe, Nissan Armada, and other full-size SUVs.
Up until the 2021 model year, the Sequoia was slotted between the mid-size 4Runner and the premium Land Cruiser in the North American Toyota SUV lineup. With the discontinuation of North American sales of the Land Cruiser from the 2022 model year onward, the Sequoia became the flagship SUV in Toyota's North America lineup.
As of 2021, the Sequoia is sold in the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica. It is offered in left-hand drive only.

- Faulty Oxygen Sensor: Reports indicate that some 2005 Toyota Sequoia models have had defective oxygen sensors, triggering the check engine light and potentially causing various issues.
- Premature Front Lower Ball Joint Wear: The front lower ball joint in some first-generation Sequoia SUVs has been reported to wear prematurely, leading to symptoms like hard steering and potential loss of vehicle control.
- Airbag Deflator Module Chemical Imbalance: In certain first-gen Toyota Sequoia vehicles, the passenger front airbag inflator module may have an incorrect chemical balance, potentially creating excessive pressure during airbag deployment.
- Unprompted Activation of the Vehicle Stability Control System (VSC): Some first-gen Sequoia SUVs have experienced issues with the VSC system engaging unexpectedly, causing the brakes to activate and the vehicle to shake or jerk to the side.
- Frame Rust: The frame of first-gen Sequoia SUVs is prone to rust, especially in states with salty conditions, potentially leading to severe rusting in the frame and undercarriage.
- Starter Replacement Difficulty: If the starter fails in the Toyota Sequoia 2005, accessing and replacing it can be challenging due to its location in the middle of the engine, requiring the removal of the intake manifold for replacement.
These problems highlight some of the key issues that owners of the Toyota Sequoia 2005 have faced, ranging from rust concerns to mechanical and safety-related issues. Owners should be aware of these common problems to address them promptly and ensure the longevity and reliability of their vehicles.

Chest Clip, Buckle, Harness PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-05
- VIN: 5TDBT44A25S
- Components: Chest Clip, Buckle, Harness
- Summary: We have an issue with our Cosco Mightyfit LX Convertible Car Seat that we purchased in 2021 from Walmart. About 5 times now, when we have gone to get our child out of the seat, one of the straps has disconnected by itself from the rear buckle loop holder. The first time it happened we thought it may be a fluke, but given it has happened now about 5 times we are concerned about the continued use of this car seat and the safety it would provide in the case of a crash. We are concerned that if involved in a crash, one side (or both) of the chest straps would somehow come undone and our child would not be secured in his seat. Once we re-connect the strap to the buckle/loop on the back side of the car seat, it seems to be okay again for a little bit, but there is no notice or appearance of issues until some time later we go to unbuckle him and realize one strap just pulls out of the back of the seat. Additionally, the issue seems to occur regardless of installation method. It has occurred with both the latch system and the vehicle's seat belt. Issue seems to be regardless of seat installation location as we have had it happen in both the 2nd and 3rd rows. Vehicle seems to not play a factor as well. To answer the suggested questions very specifically: -What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The harness. Specifically, part of the 5-point harness that is the shoulder strap (left side usually) -How was the child’s safety put at risk? Child would not be secure in instance of crash and liable to come out of their car seat or not remain as firmly planted as designed. -Has the car seat been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No it has not. The date listed below of when incident occurred is the most recent date this occurred, but again it has been multiple times now.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-22
- VIN: 5TDBT48A65S
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: After several years of fighting problems with, after braking to a brief stop, the loss of power/abs grinding when accelerating and turning right, now the ABS is completely dysfunctional. Both TRC lights will turn on and usually the parking brake, and when braking at speeds less than 10mph the abs will activate and prevent bring the truck to a stop without pumping them, on dry pavement. When the ABS light turns on, then braking is possible, but all pressure is gone from brake booster and brakes sound like they're grinding, not like the sound of abs engaging. Very dangerous to drive in snow as front brakes work but drive axle doesn't disengage when the brake pedal is depressed. Regular mechanic won't engage with diagnosing issues as he feels the problem is partly computer malfunction and Toyota won't allow for used part mismatching. ABS/ECU is failed.

- Summary: 2005 Sequoia class action, court ordered frame inspection & either repair or frame replacement. Never received notice of class action. Received letter stating vehicle needed to be inspected. Took to Victory Toyota, Canton, MI on Jan 5, 2018. Was told passed inspection & frame needed seal coating, did not have product. Vehicle was taken in multiple times, never completed the process. On May 6, 2019 the vehicle was taken to this dealership, a rental vehicle was provided and they did nothing and on May 21, 2019, noted the vehicle didn’t pass inspection & the campaign had expired! Per service history report from another dealership, on May 21, (the 15th day they had they had vehicle in their possession), they noted the frame did not pass inspection, also noted the repair timeline expired and they did nothing; however, they were paid to do the job they never did. The frame should of been replaced. I have photos from 2016 showing holes in the frame. I took vehicle to two other dealerships, one inspected in fall 2019 & sent 3 photos to Toyota showing the frame rusted holes but stated once Toyota makes a decision, the never change their mind. Second local dealership printed detailed Toyota repair history report showing Victory stated the vehicle did not pass inspection and that the timeline expired on the 16th day they had the vehicle!! The vehicle interior & exterior is in excellent condition but Toyota knowing refused to replace many of the frames, even though they knew the manufacturer had not made the frames correctly. Toyota has tons of money, clearly they don’t care about their product or customers safety.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-01-29
- VIN: 5TDBT44A05S
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: IN OCTOBER OF 2020, I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT FOR MY AIRBAG RECALLS AT MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER (LIA TOYOTA OF COLONIE). MY APPOINTMENT WAS ON OCTOBER 22, 2020. AFTER DEVOTING A DAY TO THIS, I WAS DISMAYED TO LEARN THAT MY VEHICLE COULD NOT BE REPAIRED BECAUSE THE PARTS WERE BACKORDERED. THEY SAID THEY WOULD LET ME KNOW WHEN THE PARTS WERE IN. SEVERAL WEEKS WENT BY, AND I HEARD NOTHING. THEN, I GET A CRYPTIC MESSAGE FROM SOMEONE IN THEIR PARTS DEPARTMENT, AND GAVE ME A NUMBER TO CALL BACK. WHEN I CALLED THE NUMBER, A MAN ANSWERED WHO SAID IT WAS NOT LIA TOYOTA, AND THAT HE'D BEEN GETTING A LOT OF CALLS FROM PEOPLE THINKING THEY WERE CALLING LIA TOYOTA. (THE DEALERSHIP DID PICK UP WHEN I CALLED THE NUMBER, AND IT WAS WHEN I ENTERED THE CHOICE TO SPEAK WITH THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT THE PHONE SYSTEM THEN TRANSFERRED ME TO SOME INDIVIDUAL'S MOBILE PHONE!) SO, I THEN HAD TO TRY A DIFFERENT ROUTE TO CONTACT THE DEALERSHIP AND FIND OUT WHAT WAS HAPPENING. THIS LED TO SEVERAL CALLS WHERE NO ONE REALLY KNEW WHAT WAS HAPPENING. I FINALLY GOT MY ORIGINAL SERVICE MANAGER TO RESEARCH THE SITUATION, AND HE SAID THE PARTS WERE STILL ON BACK ORDER. FAST FORWARD TO DECEMBER 15, 2020, AND I TEXTED THEIR SERVICE DEPARTMENT WHO INFORMED ME THAT 1 PART WAS IN, BUT ANOTHER WAS STILL BACKORDERED. I THEN TEXTED THEM TODAY (JAN 29) AND THEY SAID THE PARTS WERE NOW IN. SO I AM FAIRLY CERTAIN THAT NO ONE WAS EVER GOING TO FOLLOW UP WITH ME TO NOTIFY ME OF THIS. IT'S BEEN 3.5 MONTHS, AND CUSTOMERS' SAFETY DOES NOT SEEM IMPORTANT TO EITHER TOYOTA OR LIA TOYOTA OF COLONIE. I OWN SEVERAL BUSINESSES, AND CUSTOMERS' VALUABLE TIME DOES NOT SEEM IMPORTANT TO THEM EITHER. I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO WORK THIS HARD TO GET A RECALL REPAIR DONE.

- Summary: THESE VEHICLES HAVE A WELL KNOWN FRAME RUST ISSUE. IN MARCH OF 2018, TOYOTA DEEMED THIS FRAME SAFE AFTER AN INSPECTION AND APPLIED AN UNDERCOATING TO COVER UP THE RUST. A YEAR LATER THE UNDERCOATING BEGAN TO FLAKE OFF, REVEALING THE SEVERE RUST UNDERNEATH. LAST WEEK, NOT EVEN THREE YEARS LATER, WE WERE MAKING A RIGHT TURN AND FELT A POP UNDERNEATH. THE PASSENGER SIDE SWAY BAR MOUNT BROKE LOOSE FROM THE FRAME, AND THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TOLD US THE FRAME IS SO ROTTED THERE'S NOTHING LEFT TO WELD IT BACK TO. OTHER THAN THE FRAME ROT, THE VEHICLE RUNS, LOOKS, AND DRIVES LIKE NEW. THIS FRAME, AS WELL AS MANY OTHERS, SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED INSTEAD OF UNDERCOATED. THE CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AND SERVICE CAMPAIGN ARE OVER, BUT I THINK THIS SHOULD BE REVISITED, AS THERE ARE STILL MANY INSTANCES OF THIS HAPPENING.

THE CAR IS NOT WORTH THAT MUCH, AS I WOULD BE SPENDING ON IT. LOOKING ONLINE THERE ARE OTHERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND SOME HAVE SAID TOYOTA HAS REPLACED THEIR ENGINE. I CONTACTED THE EXECUTIVE OFFICE AND THEY DENIED ANY ASSISTANCE, SEEMS LIKE THEY DO NOT WANT TO STAND BEHIND THEIR CUSTOMERS WHEN PROBLEMS ARISE UNTIL IT BECOMES A BIGGER ISSUE. I AM JUST LETTING YOU GUYS KNOW OF THIS PROBLEM, I AM NOT SURE IF YOU CAN DO ANYTHING, BUT I WANT TO INVOLVE MEDIA AND OTHERS WITH THIS PROBLEM. IT IS NOT FAIR TO SPEND SO MUCH MONEY ON A CAR JUST FOR THE ENGINE TO GO OUT AT 52,000 MILES. THERE HAS TO BE SOME KIND OF MANUFACURE DEFECT.

The inflators in the front passenger air bags are susceptible to rupture in the event of a crash necessitating the deployment of the front passenger air bag.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.

- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) notified the agency on May 13, 2015 that they are recalling certain model year 2004 Sequoia vehicles manufactured August 18, 2003, to August 19, 2004, and 2003-2004 Tundra vehicles manufactured March 18, 2003, to August 25, 2004. This is to address a safety defect in the passenger side frontal air bag inflator which may produce excessive internal pressure causing the inflator to rupture upon deployment of the air bag. This recall addresses both the passenger side frontal air bags that were originally installed in the vehicles, as well as replacement air bags that may have been installed as replacement service parts. A replacement air bag may have been installed, as one example, if a vehicle had been in a crash necessitating the replacement of the passenger side frontal air bag.

The only issue we've encountered so far is with the gas gauge. Sometimes the needle will show empty even though there is over half a tank left. Other than that, we are extremely pleased with our Sequoia. We had a Ford Explorer before, and we've learned our lesson to never purchase a Ford again.

I purchased a 2005 model with increased horsepower [42hp over 2004 model]. The acceleration is fine and I was able to buy the car at $3500 below MSRP. Although I am a previous Land Cruiser owner, I am very satisfied with the Sequoia even though it is not a 4WD vehicle.

Congratulations on your new Sequoia! It sounds like you've had a great first week of ownership, driving about 330 miles on the tank of gas that came with the car. We're thrilled to hear that you're happy with every aspect of the Sequoia, from the purchase process (which you did via the net with a Fleet Sales Manager and saved almost $2K less than the TMV) to the high build quality and the great feeling you get driving it. If you're in the market for a full-size SUV, we highly recommend considering the Sequoia. You won't be disappointed!

I had the 03 and never had any problems. This 05 is a lot like it but with more horsepower. I also liked the Phantom Grey when it first came out.

With a wife and three toddlers, this truck fits the bill. It's comfortable for them and has plenty of toys for me, like the NAV system, great performance, and stylish looks. The kids can watch DVDs and use their own headsets, so I don't hear a peep from them when they're watching Shrek. The only minor issue is that there could be more cargo space, but I can always get one of those Thules for the roof. I highly recommend this truck!

The truck experienced some issues after 5000 miles, specifically sputtering and jerking under light acceleration while going up hills. Despite the dealer initially diagnosing it as a computer problem, it was later identified as a transmission issue. Although the dealer replaced the transmission, the problem persisted. However, after further inspection, the dealer determined that it is a characteristic of the vehicle. While this may seem unusual given the initial diagnosis, it is important to note that the vehicle is still functional and safe to drive. It is worth noting that the truck may not be the most comfortable on the interstate due to the jerking and sputtering on inclines and uphill ramps. Overall, the truck remains a reliable and high-quality vehicle from Toyota.

Although I experienced some issues with the power steering fluids shortly after purchasing my Sequoia, I am confident that Toyota will address any potential defects through their recall process. While it was frustrating to have a problem with the power steering pump so soon after driving off the lot, I trust that Toyota will take care of any issues that may arise. I would recommend waiting for any potential recalls before purchasing a 2005 Sequoia.

I really enjoy driving this vehicle. It handles nicely and has ample cargo room. The back seats fold up easily for additional cargo room. Although the gas mileage is poor, I expected that when I bought it. It's a great car for families with three kids who can climb in the back and buckle themselves in. The comfort level is decent, but we also own a Chevy Suburban which we prefer for road trips due to its more comfortable seats and additional leg room. The placement of the DVD player is not ideal, located inside the storage compartment between the front driver and passenger seats, which can be inconvenient when driving alone and needing to change the movie. The seat warmer switches are also poorly placed and get turned on accidentally all the time. However, the dash controls are well-designed.

I recently switched from a Trailblazer to a Sequoia due to Toyota's reputation for reliability. Unfortunately, I quickly noticed an issue with the oil pressure and the dealer was unable to provide a solution, claiming they had never seen it before. After going through arbitration, Toyota corporate's response was disappointing as they claimed that this issue is common. Despite this setback, the Sequoia is a great vehicle for its intended purpose and I enjoy driving it. However, I am considering selling it as Toyota's quality can be hit or miss. It's important to be aware of the potential risks when purchasing a Toyota vehicle.
