2003 Toyota Sequoia problems
The Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV manufactured by Toyota mainly for the North American market since 2000 for the 2001 model year, being derived from the Tundra pickup truck. It is the second largest SUV ever produced under the Toyota brand, after the Japan-exclusive, military-focused Mega Cruiser.
Previously manufactured at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana in Princeton, Indiana between 2000 and 2021, and then in Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas in San Antonio, Texas since 2022, the Sequoia is the first vehicle from a Japanese marque in the popular mainstream full-sized SUV class in North America, and initial planning done by first-generation Sequoia chief engineer Kaoru Hosokawa aimed the Sequoia directly at the Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe, Nissan Armada, and other full-size SUVs.
Up until the 2021 model year, the Sequoia was slotted between the mid-size 4Runner and the premium Land Cruiser in the North American Toyota SUV lineup. With the discontinuation of North American sales of the Land Cruiser from the 2022 model year onward, the Sequoia became the flagship SUV in Toyota's North America lineup.
As of 2021, the Sequoia is sold in the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica. It is offered in left-hand drive only.

Common 2003 Toyota Sequoia problems
The Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV introduced in 2001, designed to fill the gap between the Toyota Land Cruiser and the Toyota 4Runner. While generally reliable, the 2003 Toyota Sequoia has some common problems that owners have reported.
- Transmission problems: Earlier models of the Sequoia, including the 2003 model, were reported to struggle with transmission issues. These problems can be particularly expensive to fix, with repair costs potentially reaching as high as $3,500 due to the need for transmission replacement or rebuilding.
- Faulty oxygen sensor: Many reports of defective oxygen sensors have been made for the 2001-2004 Toyota Sequoia models. When the oxygen sensor fails, the check engine light illuminates, which can be frustrating since it can indicate various issues.
- Doors and other details: Some owners have reported issues with the doors and other details of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia. While these problems are not as severe as transmission or rust issues, they can still be frustrating for owners.
- Gas mileage: The 2003 Toyota Sequoia has been criticized for its poor gas mileage. This issue can lead to increased fuel costs and is not environmentally friendly.
In conclusion, while the 2003 Toyota Sequoia is generally a reliable vehicle, it has some common problems that owners should be aware of. Rust issues, transmission problems, faulty oxygen sensors, doors and other details, and poor gas mileage are some of the most frequently reported issues. Potential buyers should consider these problems when deciding whether to purchase a 2003 Toyota Sequoia.

- Summary: I want to bring attention to the a fatal flaw designed into Toyota truck frames. I understand Toyota denied my claim and I am out of luck with the repairs on my truck. However it is morally responsible for me to bring awareness to this deadly issue. Since most owners don't know they have a problem until the frame breaks, it is worth raising awareness to save human life. This is not a cosmetic issue, its a life or death issue for the consumer. The frame on my truck is completely rusted. In 2013, a Toyota dealership did a frame inspection on my 2003 truck per the recall notice to the previous owner. Toyota had a safety recall for a two step frame replacement for 12 years. The inspection noted an excessive amount of corrosion and rust on the frame components. In 2014, another Toyota dealership decided to spray a sealer over the rust instead of replacing the frame. The sealer trapped moisture and accelerated the oxidation process. This made the problem worse and the rust spread and destroyed the metal to a point its not repairable or safe to drive. The frame of the truck is only 20 years old and was garage kept. However it was operated in a cold climate where salt is applied to the roadways. After filing a several cases with Toyota US I was told its the consumers responsibility and the case was denied. Me and the previous owner did follow the guidelines set forth by the safety frame recall. Since Toyota worked on the frame during the time of the recall they should be held responsible for any liability to human life. Now that these vehicle are starting to age we will start see fatalities on our roadways that will be directly linked to bad frame design. Crumple zones and vehicle safety systems are not effective when the structure they are built upon are defective. I have attached pictures and dealer paperwork for review.

Rear differential rusting out. Cab mounts rusting out. Spare tire hardware rusting out. Transmission cooler lines about to burst from corrosion. Rear tow assembly rusting out. Entire underside is rotting out. Known issue which has plagued hundreds of owners, but Toyota has not recalled this model year. Extremely dangerous; one brake line has already gone out resulting in a loss of braking. Toyota applied an undercoating circa 2013 but they just sprayed over an already rusted frame and other components without proper preparation which actually accelerated the corrosion and rot. Deceptive and unethical business practices. Vehicle cost over $50,000 new in 2003 and only has just over 120,000 miles on it. This should NOT be happening. Please help. Please investigate.

- Summary: My gas gauge sensor consistently drops below the “E” marker when the truck has gas in it and especially when it is filled up. After driving about 50 miles or so, the gauge will move up some ; however, I have been relying on my DTE monitor to let me know about gas. I have taken it to the dealer twice and both said “the gas tank needs to be dropped in order for repair” I was About to pay for the service but was told I had to make an appointment. However the service advise ask had I had it replaced before because there was a recall on that particular part several years ago. Please note I have never received any notice about a recall regarding the issue. Please advise.
SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-08-28
- VIN: 5tdzt34a93s
- Components: SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The latch hook/truck door release has a defect. It has been replaced 3 times after purchase of my vehicle , by the following Toyota dealerships (Tejas Toyota in Humble Texas (2x); Maund Toyota in Austin, Tx (1x). Each dealership service said it was/is manufacture defect with the latch hook and it stops “un latching when the vehicle the button is pressed to unlock and the handle can not open the hatchback” This time I was traveling out of state with my pet in the kennel and when we stopped for restroom break the latch would not open to retrieve the pet to let out the kennel. We were traveling with a vehicle full of items, which the entire inside of the vehicle had to be emptied I ordered to let all the seats down and try to maneuver to try to get my dog out of kennel I. Such a small confined space that was hard to open because it was in the side. It took over and hour to cut the cage at the top to retrieve my pet. The sad part is there was no warning because we were traveling a 13 hour trip, stopping every couple hours for breaks and stretches, and the couple hours before we open the hatchback just fine. This is more than a safety concern for the animal. This is also the ares for retrieving the spare tire underneath the vehicle when the spare has to be released. I have replaced the part 3 times and I am charged $600 cost for parts and labor, when Toyota is aware of the defect. I just had the part replaced 19 months ago and Toyota only gives a 12 warranty on the part. This is ludicrous when the manufacture is aware of the ongoing problem. I have purchased 4 prior Toyota’s and never had had this type of problem. My second safety issue is the case gage drops below the empty gage and stays there even though there is gas in the vehicle. The dealership said there was a recall years ago but I never received any notice. Please advise.

- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) notified the agency on May 13, 2015 that they are recalling certain model year 2004 Sequoia vehicles manufactured August 18, 2003, to August 19, 2004, and 2003-2004 Tundra vehicles manufactured March 18, 2003, to August 25, 2004. On June 16, 2015, Toyota expanded the recall to include an additional 1,270,468 vehicles, including model year 2002-2003 and 2005-2007 Sequoia, 2005-2006 Tundra, 2003-2007 Corolla, 2003-2007 Corolla Matrix, 2003-2007 Pontiac Vibe and 2002-2007 Lexus SC vehicles. This is to address a safety defect in the passenger side frontal air bag inflator which may produce excessive internal pressure causing the inflator to rupture upon deployment of the air bag. This recall addresses both the passenger side frontal air bags that were originally installed in the vehicles, as well as replacement air bags that may have been installed as replacement service parts. A replacement air bag may have been installed, as one example, if a vehicle had been in a crash necessitating the replacement of the passenger side frontal air bag.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: 2003-2004 Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles that are recalled under both 15V-043 and 15V-285 are under a Do Not Drive advisory. I'm so glad to hear that you've enjoyed owning your Sequoia for the past six years! Although you mentioned having a problem with the rear window not going down, it sounds like it hasn't been a major issue for you. While it may not be the most fuel-efficient vehicle, it certainly has a lot of other great features that you appreciate. In particular, you mentioned that it handles like no other vehicle and hugs the road when driven with care and respect. That's really impressive!

The first week after I bought the car, I thought I had made a mistake as the panel lit up like a Christmas tree. However, after two visits to the shop, the problem was finally identified, and although the part was not readily available, it was fixed within a week. There was an issue with the actuator on the ABS brake system part, but since then, the car has been a dream to drive. I absolutely love it! However, I must warn you that the middle console on the passenger side is loose, and despite Toyota's efforts, they have been unable to find the right part to fix it. They have suggested that I visit a local shop instead. Although it is a cosmetic issue, it is not a big deal. Overall, the drive is wonderful!

Congratulations on your new Sequoia! It sounds like it will be a great asset for your second job, even if it does use up a lot of gas. As you mentioned, the size is fantastic, although it may be a bit of a squeeze for eight adults. The middle row seems to have plenty of space, and the third row is not too shabby either. Overall, it sounds like you are enjoying your new purchase and would recommend it. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I'm so happy with my first SUV! Although I didn't consider any American models at first, I have to say that the Japanese engineering and quality are hard to beat. I was choosing between the MDX and the Sequoia, and ultimately went with the Sequoia because it offered the most hip, shoulder, and legroom. The MDX didn't have many vehicles to look at, and the color choices were slim. I also wasn't thrilled about paying full MSRP sticker price. The Sequoia, on the other hand, offered more vehicle for the money and I was able to purchase it for 4k under MSRP. The ride quality is superior, the seats are better, and the interior/exterior design is top-notch. I also love the superior color choices. The engine is the smoothest V8 I've ever owned and it's very quiet. The fuel economy is acceptable at 17mpg. I have had no problems with my purchase and no regrets!

This is a fantastic truck! It definitely catches the eye with its great look, and it's also incredibly reliable. I use it to pull my 10x5 trailer, and it hasn't let me down yet.

That's a beautiful truck, but be careful to check for rust on the chassis. I had an issue with rust and unfortunately Toyota didn't stand behind the product. They suggested that I sell it, which wasn't the best solution. They did spray some repellant to help with the rust, but it didn't work. I hope this information can help someone. If you notice any rust under the truck, it's best to avoid it.

The Sequoia may not be the most exciting vehicle, but it certainly has its perks. While the front seat armrests may be on the smaller side, they still provide some comfort. Additionally, the daytime running lights cannot be shut off, but they do provide added safety. The climate control system may take some getting used to, but it is designed to keep you comfortable in any weather. Finally, while the owners manual may suggest consulting your local Toyota dealer for certain electronic features, this ensures that you receive the best possible service and support.

I have had a disappointing experience with this Sequoia. Despite being a new purchase, I have had to deal with several problems since then. The bulb that illuminates the D on the dash when the car is put in gear burned out, which was an $85 repair at the dealer, plus the cost of the bulb. The brakes have been inadequate and require routine pads and rotors replacements way too often, costing around $400 every 30k miles. Additionally, the timing belt and water pump needed replacement at 90k miles, which cost me another $700. It is worth noting that other vehicles use a timing chain, which doesn't require routine changes at premium prices. The A/C and rear hatch window motor have also failed, and unfortunately, Toyota has not taken any responsibility for these defective designs. Despite this experience, I remain confident in my assessment of the vehicle and will not be purchasing another Toyota in the future.

The car experienced multiple issues such as problems with vcs, trac, abs lights coming on and a grinding noise when making a right turn. Despite taking it to the Toyota dealership several times, the issue could not be resolved. Due to safety concerns and the hassle involved, the car was returned and replaced with a 2006 GMC Yukon. It is unfortunate that such issues occurred with a Toyota vehicle. The writer had a positive experience with a 2003 Chevy Suburban, which had only one issue with the fuel pump over six years and 120,000 miles of use.

Finally, a review from someone who owns both! The Tahoe has great acceleration, comfortable seats, a well-designed interior layout, good towing capacity, and excellent interior lighting. However, the engine light flashes for no reason, the steering is too sensitive on the highway, the radio sounds tinny at low levels, and the fuel economy is not great. Overall, I would rate it 8.5/10. As for the Sequoia, it is highly reliable, has attractive exterior styling, a power rear window, and retractable mirrors. However, the interior lighting could be improved, the seat style and comfort could be better, the dash layout is not ideal (the wiper switch goes on when I put it in park!), the door-mounted switches are too small, and the fuel economy is not great. Overall, I would rate it 7.5/10.
