2004 Toyota Sequoia problems

The Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV manufactured by Toyota mainly for the North American market since 2000 for the 2001 model year, being derived from the Tundra pickup truck. It is the second largest SUV ever produced under the Toyota brand, after the Japan-exclusive, military-focused Mega Cruiser.

Previously manufactured at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana in Princeton, Indiana between 2000 and 2021, and then in Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas in San Antonio, Texas since 2022, the Sequoia is the first vehicle from a Japanese marque in the popular mainstream full-sized SUV class in North America, and initial planning done by first-generation Sequoia chief engineer Kaoru Hosokawa aimed the Sequoia directly at the Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe, Nissan Armada, and other full-size SUVs.

Up until the 2021 model year, the Sequoia was slotted between the mid-size 4Runner and the premium Land Cruiser in the North American Toyota SUV lineup. With the discontinuation of North American sales of the Land Cruiser from the 2022 model year onward, the Sequoia became the flagship SUV in Toyota's North America lineup.

As of 2021, the Sequoia is sold in the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica. It is offered in left-hand drive only.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-03-17
  • VIN: 5TDBT48A54S
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: I WAS SIMPLY PARKING MY 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA IN PARKING LOT SPACE. LEFT FRONT TIRE FELL COMPLETELY OFF THE CAR WITHOUT ANY PREVIOUS WARNING OF PENDING PROBLEMS! BALL JOINT CATASTROPHICALLY FAILED! PRIOR RECENT NEW TIRES AND ALIGNMENT SHOWED NO PENDING PROBLEMS. DID A CHECK AND FOUND MANY PRIOR BALL JOINT ISSUES FOR THIS CAR AND A PRIOR RECALL YEARS AGO. TOWED TO TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN CAPITOLA CA. THEY REPLACED BALL JOINT AND RELATED PARTS. THEY CHARGED ME LOTS OF MONEY CLAIMING THAT THIS VEHICLE HAD "PREVIOUSLY BEEN RECALLED AND REPAIRED IN 2007 SO NO LIABILITY ON THEIR PART. I CALLED TOYOTA CORPORATE AND COMPLAINED AND WAS BOUNCED AROUND UNTIL A FELLOW NAMED "GARRET" TOLD ME THE BALL JOINTS HAD BEEN "FIXED" IN 2007 DURING A RECALL. GREAT. THEN WHY DO THESE ISSUES CONTINUE? MY CAR IS DRIVEN ONLY ON PUBLIC STREETS AND THERE WAS NO WARNING OF THIS IMPENDING FAILURE. THE BALL JOINT AND RELATED SIMPLY FAILED CATASTROPHICALLY. I TAKE EXCELLENT CARE OF THIS VEHICLE AS I INTENDED ON KEEPING IT REGARDLESS OF MILEAGE. WHAT BS IS TOYOTA PULLING WHEN THEIR SEQUOIA (AND OTHER SIMILAR TOYOTA VEHICLES) CONTINUE TO CATASTROPHICALLY FAIL WITHOUT WARNING? I WONDER HOW MANY PEOPLE DIED ON THE FREEWAY ETC BECAUSE OF THIS? I HAVE PERSONALLY OWNED AND/OR FAMILY, FRIENDS ETC. MANY CARS, TRUCKS ETC. BALL JOINTS LIKE BRAKES, TIRES HOSES ETC WEAR OUT SLOWLY AND GIVE AMPLE WARNING WHEN THEY NEED REPLACEMENT IE TIRE WEAR IS INCREASED, STEERING DIFFICULTY ETC. NOT IN TOYOTA'S CASE. THERE WAS NO WARNING AT ALL BEFORE THE WHEEL JUST FELL OFF THE VEHICLE. THESE CATASTROPHIC FAILURES OF WHEELS FALLING OFF WITHOUT WARNING AT ANY MOMENT ARE HORRIBLY DANGEROUS AND YET COMMON KNOWLEDGE INCLUDING PRIOR RECALL(S) AND YET THEY STILL ARE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE. THIS IS RIDICULOUS!

  • VIN: 5TDBT44A64S
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: I HAVE A 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN WELL TAKEN CARE OF WITH NUMEROUS RECEIPTS TO PROVE IT. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION OF THE VEHICLE, I HAVE OBSERVED A 'ROT' HOLE IN THE REAR PART OF THE FRAME. THE WHOLE IN THE FRAME IS APPROXIMATELY THE SIZE OF A DOLLAR BILL AND SPREADING. THERE ARE OTHER PARTS OF THE FRAME THAT WILL NEED ATTENTION IN THE FUTURE. TOYOTA HAS RECALLED SEQUOIA MODEL YEARS 2005 AND UP AND HAVE NEGLECTED TO INCLUDE THE 2004. IT IS APPARENT THAT THE 2004 SEQUOIA IS SUBJECT TO THE SAME FAULTY FRAME MANUFACTURING AS OTHER MODELS/ YEARS OF NUMEROUS TOYOTA'S. MY VEHICLE HAS APPROXIMATELY 137,600 MILES ON IT. I HAVE MAINTAINED VEHICLES FROM FROM THE 90S THAT HAVE BETTER FRAME CONSTRUCTION THAN MY TOYOTA. I BELIEVE THAT THE FRAME ON MY 2004 SEQUOIA WILL NEED FRAME PATCHES IN THE FUTURE AS WELL AS MANY OTHER METAL COMPONENTS CONNECTED TO THE FRAME REPLACED.

The inflators in the front passenger air bags are susceptible to rupture in the event of a crash necessitating the deployment of the front passenger air bag.

  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) notified the agency on May 13, 2015 that they are recalling certain model year 2004 Sequoia vehicles manufactured August 18, 2003, to August 19, 2004, and 2003-2004 Tundra vehicles manufactured March 18, 2003, to August 25, 2004. On June 16, 2015, Toyota expanded the recall to include an additional 1,270,468 vehicles, including model year 2002-2003 and 2005-2007 Sequoia, 2005-2006 Tundra, 2003-2007 Corolla, 2003-2007 Corolla Matrix, 2003-2007 Pontiac Vibe and 2002-2007 Lexus SC vehicles. This is to address a safety defect in the passenger side frontal air bag inflator which may produce excessive internal pressure causing the inflator to rupture upon deployment of the air bag. This recall addresses both the passenger side frontal air bags that were originally installed in the vehicles, as well as replacement air bags that may have been installed as replacement service parts. A replacement air bag may have been installed, as one example, if a vehicle had been in a crash necessitating the replacement of the passenger side frontal air bag.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: 2003-2004 Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles that are recalled under both 15V-043 and 15V-285 are under a Do Not Drive advisory. Owners of these vehicles are advised not to drive their vehicles until the recall remedy has been completed. Toyota will notify their owners. Pontiac Vibe owners will be notified by GM. Negative 2004 Toyota Sequoia car reviews

Although Toyota is known for its quality, I was disappointed with this particular vehicle. However, I did find my Jeep Grand Cherokee to be a better fit for me. Despite this, I needed a bigger vehicle and decided to trade it in. Unfortunately, the rear liftgate has been stuck shut 7 times, which seems to be a common issue. Additionally, the rear window stopped working after about 50K miles. When the seats are folded up, they slam backwards and can be hazardous to children. Furthermore, I believe that for the price, the passenger side should have a power lumbar, similar to Chevys and Jeeps. Overall, I found the seats to be stiff and uncomfortable. When I trade this vehicle, I will be considering a Jeep or a Suburban.

I love the size of the Sequoia, but unfortunately, I have had a lot of problems with it. It has had more issues than all my other cars combined. For example, I had to replace the transmission, and the rear window stopped working, which was a scary experience for me and my dog. The VSC also shuts down on rainy days, causing a loss of power when turning. Additionally, the engine depowered while I was driving on the highway, which was a very dangerous situation. It also seems to eat through tires, which I've been told is due to a problem with the $2500 VSC computer. Lastly, the paint quality is not great and scratches easily.

The SUV's suspension and lower ball joint were subject to multiple recalls, which unfortunately were not known to my wife when she purchased our used 2004 model. On July 9, 2015, while riding alone, the lower ball joint failed, causing the wheel to separate and resulting in a loss of control. The vehicle collided with a large oak tree, causing severe injuries to my leg, including multiple fractures, requiring reconstructive knee surgery, skin grafts, and resulting in bruised elbows and ribs. It is clear that the recalls were not addressed, leading to this unfortunate incident.

In comparing my 2004 Sequioa with 130,000 miles to my 2003 Tahoe with 258,000, the Tahoe outperforms the Sequioa in several areas. The Sequioa falls short in terms of power, fuel economy, and towing capacity, and its ride and driving experience are not as smooth as the Tahoe's. Additionally, the Sequioa's plastic pieces are falling off, and the driver's seat is uncomfortable for those over 6 feet tall with long legs. Based on my experience, I have decided to purchase the Chevy Tahoe again, as it is a superior truck. I do not plan on purchasing another Sequioa in the future.

I have taken my Sequoia to the shop four times despite having only driven 2,000 miles. Although the dealership has replaced the tires and rims, there still seems to be an issue with the rear end. However, I am confident that the issue can be resolved and I expect the vehicle to perform as it should. I recommend taking the vehicle out on the highway and driving it for at least 25 miles before making a decision on whether to keep it.

  1. Khalil Balistreri 2024-11-02

Hi there! I noticed that during highway testing, the vehicle only received 8 miles per gallon, which is much lower than expected. While the style of the car is great, it may not be the most kid-friendly option. Unfortunately, there is no access to the 3rd row seat and no cup holders in the 2nd row that are easily reachable by children. Overall, I can understand why you may be disappointed with the efficiency. Let me know if there's anything else I can help you with!

Well-built, superb finish, solid ride, a lot of pep from the engine, engine the smoothest you've ever encountered, huge on the inside, the climate control and audio systems are excellent

  3. Keegan Frami 2024-09-13

This was quite a change from our old Sub. While we gave up some room, we have more money in repair savings. The V8 is very peppy even here at 5,280 feet. At sea level, it is quite exciting. It's great for long runs and it can take along lots of whatever you want to pack.

  4. Deangelo Herman 2024-09-11

I've only had the vehicle for 3 months but so far I am extremely pleased with it. The ride is very smooth, and the interior is very comfortable except for the headrest. It is an awesome looking SUV and I get a lot of compliments.

  5. Morton Fadel 2024-08-08

This car is big, roomy, and quiet. It has more space than my wife's minivan and is very well built. You'll feel well protected in the event of a crash.
