2022 Toyota Sequoia problems

toyota logo

The Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV manufactured by Toyota mainly for the North American market since 2000 for the 2001 model year, being derived from the Tundra pickup truck. It is the second largest SUV ever produced under the Toyota brand, after the Japan-exclusive, military-focused Mega Cruiser.

Previously manufactured at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana in Princeton, Indiana between 2000 and 2021, and then in Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas in San Antonio, Texas since 2022, the Sequoia is the first vehicle from a Japanese marque in the popular mainstream full-sized SUV class in North America, and initial planning done by first-generation Sequoia chief engineer Kaoru Hosokawa aimed the Sequoia directly at the Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe, Nissan Armada, and other full-size SUVs.

Up until the 2021 model year, the Sequoia was slotted between the mid-size 4Runner and the premium Land Cruiser in the North American Toyota SUV lineup. With the discontinuation of North American sales of the Land Cruiser from the 2022 model year onward, the Sequoia became the flagship SUV in Toyota's North America lineup.

As of 2021, the Sequoia is sold in the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica. It is offered in left-hand drive only.

Negative 2022 Toyota Sequoia car reviews

  1. Alexandro McGlynn 2024-10-10

When this version of the Sequoia was released, George W. Bush was President (2007). It seems like Toyota is ready for a change. Although I loved my 2006 Sequoia, I think this generation is not as visually appealing. The dashboard and tech features are outdated, and the plastic interior could use an upgrade. I believe Toyota has the potential to do better and I look forward to seeing what they come up with next!

  2. Emil Pollich 2024-08-28

This car has a very poor gas mileage, averaging only 11 MPG's despite my efforts to drive conservatively. I have owned trucks and SUV's before and have never experienced such low fuel efficiency. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this car to anyone who is concerned about fuel consumption.

  3. Baron Gutmann 2024-08-19

This car may require frequent trips to the gas station. Additionally, it may not provide the smoothest ride as it can be quite loud and jerky when shifting gears. When starting from a stop, it may also feel sluggish. However, we understand that everyone has different preferences when it comes to cars, so we encourage you to test drive it and see if it's the right fit for you!

  4. Sammy Willms 2024-07-13

I have a 2019 TRD and I absolutely love the body style! However, I do wish that the stereo screen and system were better, especially considering the price I paid. The system is not up to par with what I had in my Highlander. It seems that Toyota is lagging behind in terms of technology when it comes to the Sequoia. Interestingly, my husband has a 2017 Ram with a much better system! Overall, I am a loyal Toyota customer, but I do hope they improve their technology in the future.

  5. Steve Jacobs 2024-07-05

I leased the vehicle recently and unfortunately experienced multiple safety sensor failures, including rear cross traffic, blind spot, active cruise control, and front collision radar. I promptly took the vehicle to the shop and the dealer is currently working with Toyota to resolve the issue. While this experience has been disappointing, I am confident that Toyota will address the issue and restore the reliability that they are known for. I look forward to continuing my relationship with Toyota in the future.

Positive 2022 Toyota Sequoia car reviews

  1. Darrin McGlynn 2025-07-11

A large body on truck frame, not a fake crossover truck on a car platform. You can rely on its durability and it has great resale value. It can also tow or 4-wheel if needed.

  2. Olin Hickle 2025-07-10

Some people may consider it outdated, but if you're not too concerned about the latest technology, this car is amazing! Once you get up to speed, the engine has so much power and it is really grippy even in 2wd mode. While the seats could be more comfortable, they are good enough. As someone who previously owned a 2005 Highlander, I was pleasantly surprised by the tech features in this car that some may consider outdated. Additionally, this car even has a unique feature where you can roll down the rear window (not particularly useful, but I like it).

  3. Kenton Runte 2025-06-28

My first experience with the Sequoia was with a used 2005 model that had 40,000 miles on it. Since it was assigned to me while I owned a 2004 Tundra that I had purchased new, I drove it extensively to see what it would take to break. After 65,000 miles, a set of tires and some oil changes, we auctioned it for $6,500, even though it was missing the back two rows of seats. My new 2019 Limited is an incredible value. It has a solid look and a luxurious ride. All six speeds work perfectly, and the powerful V-8 engine gives me an average of 16.7 mpg. The Sequoia is a Land Cruiser that is as tough as a Stryker, and both the Land Cruiser and the Sequoia are part of the 300,000 plus mile club for a reason. The frame, suspension, drive train, and ten-inch clearance are all overbuilt, making the competition pale in comparison. The interior is gorgeous, with all the latest features and only the minimum of things that won't stand the test of time. I am most impressed with the quiet, comfortable ride, sitting above it all and seeing everything on all four corners. My wife has never been happier. She recently stated that a three-hour drive went by without her once shifting around the spacious captain's chair to get comfortable.

  4. Jaime Dickens 2025-04-14

Just got out of a 2013 Jeep Unlimited Rubicon, which was loaded with all the options for the model at the time. However, I had to get rid of it because my family is expanding and the Sequoia delivers! Surprisingly, the gas is better in the Sequoia, which is a win! It has more room with both reclining Captain’s Chairs and third row seats, which is also a win. Toyota’s legendary reliability (over Jeep’s, but my Rubicon rocked!) and the 5.7 engine are a mic drop! The ride is fantastic and this has all the bells, whistles, and technology I need. In my humble opinion, it makes Edmund’s ratings and commentary seem a bit snobbish. This may not be for everyone, but it’s a fine vehicle indeed. Nice job Toyota!

  5. Ephraim Zemlak 2025-04-10

Most negative reviews focus on outdated tech, styling, and fewer amenities. However, I chose the Sequoia over a Suburban/Expedition for this exact reason. Toyota has spent 13 years perfecting the SUV's mechanics. I prefer my vehicles to last a long time with minimal repairs, and Sequoias have proven to have an invincible drivetrain that can go 250k+ without any issues. In my opinion, more tech usually means more repairs down the road, which can be beyond a backyard mechanic's means. Did I mention that I like to fix as much as possible on my own vehicles? Additionally, the Sequoia has the same drivetrain and 4x4 as a Landcruiser, which is perhaps the greatest SUV built worldwide, and the Sequoia is 2/3 the price. Living in rural Montana, we needed a capable SUV that could handle off-road terrain, haul a trailer, be super reliable, and fit all of our friends and family when they visit. Our certified 2019 Sequoia checked all the boxes. While gas mileage isn't great, this motor will still be running smoothly when the mechanical systems in other SUVs with turbos, cylinders that turn off and on, etc. need major repairs. If you're looking for a truly capable, reliable, and utilitarian family SUV with some comfort features, the Sequoia is the perfect choice.
