The Suzuki SX4 is a subcompact car and crossover produced by Japanese automaker Suzuki since 2006. A successor of the Aerio tall hatchback and sedan, the first-generation model was available as a hatchback and sedan, with the former available in both front- and four-wheel drive and as a rebadged version in Europe called the Fiat Sedici.

In 2013, the second generation was launched, called Suzuki SX4 S-Cross (or Suzuki S-Cross in India)— now exclusively a subcompact crossover SUV. The first- and second-generation SX4s sold alongside one another until 2014. The SX4 sedan was replaced with the Suzuki Ciaz. The third-generation model was introduced in 2021 as a heavily modified version of the previous model and was only produced in Hungary for the European market. For the Indian market, the S-Cross was replaced by the taller Grand Vitara.

The SX4 is an abbreviation of "Sports X-over 4 Seasons". The SX4 designation was previously used by American Motors Corporation (AMC) from the 1981 through 1983 model years for a sporty liftback model in its line of all-wheel-drive AMC Eagle passenger cars. While the "S-Cross" suffix is an abbreviation of Smart Crossover.

Common Suzuki Sx4 problems

Based on the complaints from owners of Suzuki SX4 cars, several common problems have been reported:

  • 5th Gear Malfunction: Some owners of the 2008 Suzuki SX4 have experienced problems with the 5th gear not working properly, which can impact the vehicle's performance.
  • Excessive Fuel Consumption: Concerns about excessive fuel consumption have been raised by owners of the 2009 Suzuki SX4, highlighting a potential issue with fuel efficiency.
  • Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Problems: Diesel models of the Suzuki SX4 are equipped with a DPF that requires frequent motorway journeys to regenerate properly. Failure to do so can lead to clogging of the filter, potentially resulting in expensive repairs. Shutting off the regeneration process midway can contaminate the oil system with fuel, causing engine damage.
  • Power Steering Pump Failures: Suzuki has reported issues with the power steering pumps in cold weather conditions, leading to potential failures. This problem can affect the vehicle's steering performance and safety.
  • Electrical Issues: Some owners have faced problems related to electrical components in the Suzuki SX4, impacting various systems within the vehicle.
  • Suspension Concerns: Reports of suspension issues have been noted by owners, affecting the ride quality and stability of the Suzuki SX4.
  • Interior Squeaks and Rattles: Owners have complained about interior squeaks and rattles, which can be bothersome and affect the overall driving experience.
  • Scratch-Prone Plastics: The interior of the Suzuki SX4 has cheap plastics that scratch easily, especially problematic for a family car that needs to withstand wear and tear.
  • DPF Regeneration and Oil Contamination: Improper DPF regeneration can lead to oil contamination with fuel, potentially causing long-term engine damage. Monitoring the DPF system and oil levels is crucial to prevent such issues.

These reported problems highlight various issues that Suzuki SX4 owners have encountered, ranging from mechanical to interior-related concerns.

Suzuki Sx4 2012
  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-01
  • Date Complaint: 2024-02-18
  • VIN: JS2YB5A36C6
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The airbag sensor in the passenger seat failed. There is a known Supplemental Restraint System issue/recall in 2007-2011 Suzuki SX4s, however there has not been a recall for the 2012 model despite this being an issue beyond the aforementioned years. Affected vehicles may develop an electrical circuit disconnection within the front passenger sensing system sensor mat that is built into the front passenger seat bottom cushion. The disconnection is due to repeated flexing of the sensor mat from use of the front passenger seat. If this condition occurs, the “AIR BAG” light in the instrument cluster and, the front passenger’s seat belt reminder light will come on. Also, the “PASS AIR BAG OFF” indicator light will remain off because the front passenger air bag will remain enabled. In a frontal impact of significant magnitude, the front air bag will deploy with full force - even with a child, or small adult, in the front seat. Air bag deployment with a child or small adult in the front passenger seat increases the risk of severe injury or death to that occupant. Replacement front seats are backordered, likely because of the recall in 2007-2011 vehicles, and despite placing an order for a new seat in May 2023, I have been waiting 9 months for a pallet to ship from Suzuki. Given the danger of traveling with a passenger given the vehicle's condition, and the fact that this was a known issue for the 5 prior years of this vehicle, this is an unacceptable amount of time to wait for a replacement part, and this should be investigated as a potential necessary recall for 2012 Suzuki SX4s.

Latest negative Suzuki Sx4 car reviews

  1. Matt Runolfsson 2025-02-22

    Vehicle year: 2007

This is a nice little car, especially in the snow. It has lots of leg and headroom for its size and gets 30 mpg on the highway, which is decent for an AWD. The fit and finish are good, and it's very tight for an eco car. After 8 months, I had an issue with water leaking from the A/C onto the passenger floor/carpeting, which was diagnosed as a 'cracked cowl' by the dealer and fixed in a day. However, the car revs at nearly 4000RPM in 5th gear at highway cruising speeds, which is too high. It needs an overdrive or 6th gear to help with highway fuel economy and keep the noise down. The seats lack back support, and there's no lumbar option even on the high-end model. The 10-gallon tank is too small, and commuting 25K/yr feels like I'm always stopping for gas. I'm hoping that the long-term reliability will be decent like earlier Suzuki's.

  2. Eddie Harvey 2025-02-21

    Vehicle year: 2010

I bought this car in 2009 and loved it for the first few years. However, I have had to replace the front and rear brakes three times, as well as the transmission, alternator, and gaskets. Unfortunately, repairs have become too frequent and costly. While the interior is okay and the seats are comfortable, the road noise is quite loud. On the plus side, the all-wheel drive was a lifesaver during the winters. The gas mileage was average, so no complaints there. However, if you are considering a car for the long term, this may not be the best option. After 10 years, it needed to be in the shop more often than I anticipated. Despite its perfect size for city driving and parking, I wouldn't buy another Suzuki even if they were still in the US market. I'm just hanging on until I can afford a better vehicle. I feel bad writing this negative review because I really wanted to keep loving the car. It was cute and other people seemed to have liked riding it.

  3. Jabari Thiel 2025-01-16

    Vehicle year: 2009

I recently purchased a 2009 SX4 Crossover Tech Package on November 16, 2009. Although the tag indicates a fuel economy of 21/28, I have noticed that in the past week, the mileage has decreased to 16 mpg locally and only 20 mpg on the highway. While I had hoped for better fuel efficiency, I must say that the car is otherwise great. If you are in the market for a fuel-efficient car, I would suggest considering other options. Additionally, I have found that the cloth seat cover is quite thin.

  4. Abdul Bartell 2025-01-12

    Vehicle year: 2010

The Suzuki SX4 Sport is a great choice for anyone looking for an affordable car that looks good and drives well. I personally drove 100 miles without any issues, and the CVT is definitely a plus. While the car may run a bit rough at idle and you may feel some road bumps with the sports wheels, it's worth noting that the car did not leak when I drove it through the car wash. Overall, I highly recommend this car as a peppy and reliable option for both starters and commuters. Even sports car enthusiasts may find something to love about it. So why not go for it? The price point is definitely a major selling point. -Oasis 3-16-10

  5. Jermey Lueilwitz 2024-11-29

    Vehicle year: 2008

This is my very first brand new vehicle purchase and unfortunately, I am quite disappointed with it. The exterior paint seems to be quite sensitive and scratches down to the metal extremely easily. I have had to pay for protectant because of bird droppings marking it. Additionally, the interior plastic on the dash and doors scratches extremely easily, and the upholstery snags like mad as well. The little windows on the front sides create blind spots which can be a bit of a challenge. The window sticker when I bought it said the average mpg was 30 on the highway, but I have not ever gotten above 25-26mpg. The gas tank is quite small and cruise control is not standard, neither are armrests. The car is not terribly comfortable and can be hard to handle in strong winds. The back seat does not offer much legroom, so it may not be the best option for a family car.

    Vehicle year: 2013

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my car that I bought brand new in 2011. I've had very few issues with it, and the only problem I encountered was covered under the drivetrain warranty - it was just the rear axle seals. I'm happy to report that there have been no recalls on this car so far, which is quite rare. I've noticed that some people think that parts are hard to come by, but that's not the case at all. However, I will say that it's not the best choice for highway driving as it takes a while to get up to speed. If you're planning on doing a lot of highway driving, you may want to consider a different option. On the bright side, I do my own mechanical work and have found that the car is easy to work on, with the exception of the oil change which can be a little tricky. If you're in the market for a car, I would definitely recommend grabbing a used one if you can. Let me know if you have any questions!

  2. Dorthy Metz 2025-02-11

    Vehicle year: 2011

My father and I co-own this car, which we bought new to handle the treacherous roads of Pittsburgh in the winter. It has great tire grip and handles very sporty, making it great in turns. While the mileage was a dismal 16 MPG in Pennsylvania, since moving to Florida, we are now getting 27.6 MPG, but that's mostly due to all level driving. The front feels roomy, but the rear is a bit tight, and there is more cargo room than a sedan, although it could be better if it had a fold-flat rear seat. It's peppy around town and on the highway, and the CVT does a good job. The interior is rather bland, and the radio quality is poor. However, my biggest gripe is regarding the front

  3. Dedrick Rohan 2025-02-11

    Vehicle year: 2012

I bought my SX4 AWD to safely zip around town and head up to my cabin in Big Bear on the weekends. The All-Wheel-Drive system works perfectly, so I don't even have to put chains on the tires when it's snowing, saving me time and hassle. The car drives great, and the seats are very comfortable and sit up high, giving me a secure feeling. Plus, with 8 airbags, I feel confident putting my family in the car. I did a lot of research before buying, and based on the value, safety ratings, and Consumer Reports recommendation, my choice was easy. I've put nearly 60k miles on it and have never had a problem other than routine maintenance.

I don't usually write reviews, but I wanted to share my thoughts on this great car. I've been driving for around 14 years and have driven various types of cars in multiple cities and countries. After test driving multiple vehicles, including Hyundai, Honda, and Nissan, I ended up purchasing the Suzuki Sx4 Sedan. I've only had the car for 4 days, but I already love it. It's a manual drive and has all the features you need in a car, including 8 airbags. Most importantly, the car runs very smoothly and has impressive zip and energy. The sound system is also great. Overall, I'm very happy with the car. The current mileage is 30, but it should certainly improve after the first service.
