Suzuki Aerio problems

The Suzuki Aerio (also called the Liana – Life In A New Age – in China, Pakistan, Europe, Israel, South Asia, Taiwan and Australia or Baleno for sedan version in Indonesia) is a subcompact car that was built by Suzuki. It was introduced in 2001 as a replacement for the Suzuki Esteem/Baleno, with a tall 5-door SX model hatchback (for maximum inner room efficiency) and a 4-door sedan body. It featured two different 16-valve gasoline inline-four engines, with 1.5-litre and 1.8-litre, this one capable of 125 PS (92 kW; 123 hp) JIS. Production was discontinued in 2007 around the world and replaced by the Suzuki SX4, except in Pakistan (2006 to 2014) and China where production was continued by Changhe-Suzuki until 2019.

Overview

Models in North America got a larger and more powerful 2.0-litre engine with 145 hp (108 kW). A 5-speed manual transmission was standard with a 4-speed automatic optional. All-wheel-drive was available, but only with the automatic. American Aerios came in two trim levels: the S and GS (2002–2004), S and SX (2005), and Base and Premium (2006–2007). Key changes over the years included an upgrade to a new 2.3-liter 155 hp (116 kW; 157 PS) engine in 2004, a major styling and interior refresh in 2005 (replacing the digital instruments with conventional analog ones), and the standardization of antilock brakes in 2006. Only the Aerio sedan remained for 2007, as the hatchback had been shelved to make room for the new 2007 SX4 hatchback. Likewise, the Aerio sedan bowed out at year's end, making way for the 2008 SX4 Sport sedan. Throughout its run, the Aerio was distinct for being the most affordable car in America to offer all-wheel drive.

In Europe, where the car was called Liana (an acronym for Life In A New Age), it was seen as a more affordable alternative to small family cars or to mini MPVs, introducing a new generation of Suzuki M engines, with 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre I4 engine. All-wheel drive was available on the bigger engine. In 2004, the car was restyled with a look that closer resembled the Japanese version, and also received a Diesel engine, with a 16-valve version of the 1.4-litre HDi engine supplied by PSA Peugeot Citroën, capable of 90 PS (66 kW; 89 hp) thanks to common rail direct injection and a variable geometry turbocharger.

The Liana remained in production in Pakistan in 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre variants until 2014.

Common Suzuki Aerio problems

The Suzuki Aerio, produced from 2001 to 2007, has been reported to have several common issues by owners. These problems include engine misfires, oil leaks, transmission issues, electrical problems, and brake and suspension issues.

One of the most common issues reported is engine misfires, which can be caused by faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, or fuel injectors. Symptoms of engine misfires include rough idling, stalling, and reduced fuel efficiency. To resolve this issue, it is recommended to replace the faulty parts and perform a tune-up.

Oil leaks are another common problem reported by Suzuki Aerio owners. These leaks can be caused by worn-out gaskets or seals, and can lead to engine damage if left unaddressed. Symptoms of oil leaks include low oil levels, smoke from the engine, and oil stains on the ground. To fix this issue, it is recommended to replace the faulty gaskets or seals and refill the engine oil.

Transmission issues have also been reported by Suzuki Aerio owners. These issues can be caused by low transmission fluid levels, worn-out clutch plates, or faulty solenoids. Symptoms of transmission issues include slipping, hesitating, or rough shifting. To resolve this issue, it is recommended to check the transmission fluid level, replace the worn-out parts, and perform a transmission flush.

Electrical problems have been reported by some Suzuki Aerio owners, particularly with the SX model. These issues can be caused by faulty wiring, blown fuses, or malfunctioning sensors. Symptoms of electrical problems include flickering dashboard lights, power window malfunctions, and radio cutouts. To fix this issue, it is recommended to replace the faulty parts and perform a diagnostic test.

Brake and suspension issues have also been reported by Suzuki Aerio owners. These issues can be caused by worn-out brake pads, damaged rotors, or faulty shocks and struts. Symptoms of brake and suspension issues include noise or vibration when driving, reduced braking performance, and uneven tire wear. To resolve this issue, it is recommended to replace the worn-out parts and perform a brake and suspension inspection.

It is important to note that regular maintenance and care can help prevent these common issues in the Suzuki Aerio. This includes regular oil changes, tire rotations, and inspections. Addressing any issues as soon as they arise can also help ensure the longevity of the vehicle.

Latest negative Suzuki Aerio car reviews

  1. Issac Braun 2025-04-23

    Vehicle year: 2004

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Aerio. I bought it used with 10,000 miles and have put 46,000 miles on it since then. Overall, I've found it to be a reliable car. However, I have noticed that the brake pads and rotors seem to wear out more quickly than in other vehicles. Have you experienced anything similar with your car?

  2. Murphy Hirthe 2025-04-21

    Vehicle year: 2002

The Suzuki Aerio may feel a bit underpowered and cramped, but there are some simple solutions to improve its performance and comfort. One option is to upgrade to an engine size of 2.8 liters or larger, which can provide better gas mileage and more power to handle the weight of the vehicle. Additionally, raising the steering wheel and adding more features to the dashboard, such as GPS, could greatly enhance the driving experience. As a family station wagon, safety is a top priority, and having access to helpful features like GPS can provide peace of mind on the road.

  3. Randall Hamill 2025-04-10

    Vehicle year: 2007

Driving this car is enjoyable, although the sound system could benefit from an upgrade in speaker placement and sound quality. The cup holders in the front are designed to securely hold a 12 oz can, but may not be suitable for larger drinks as they may spill when accelerating or braking. The seats are comfortable even during long drives. While the gas mileage is disappointing, at only 22 mpg, a car of this size should be able to achieve closer to 30 mpg. Perhaps a larger fuel tank could be considered to increase the car's range. It's worth noting that the cargo area is excellent and the area under the floor is very convenient.

  4. Lon Hickle 2025-03-04

    Vehicle year: 2003

The car is fun to drive especially around the city. Being small it isn't comfortable on long trips. The interior storage is well thought out. It has never stranded me fortunately, but I don't trust the car much. It's annoying and costly to own. It goes through tires every 20,000 miles max, even with alignments and rotation; the rear alignment lacks a key adjustment; brake rotators warp easily and brakes need replacing often; fuel economy of a big V8, and the AC belt tensioner is hard to replace and doesn't last long before it gets really noisy. The interior clock light goes off when the headlights are turned on and there other annoyances. The black velor door panels are hard to keep clean.

  5. Federico Smitham 2025-02-21

    Vehicle year: 2006

It's a good car! Although, when we went on vacation and unplugged the battery cable and came back and plugged it back in, the stereo was locked. Unfortunately, we can't use the stereo anymore - it's locked forever!

  1. Coy Rohan 2025-05-07

    Vehicle year: 2005

Bought used with 48,000 miles on it, now well over 140,000 on it and other than tires and brakes, this car runs perfectly. It's the best little car I have ever owned!

  2. Josiah Ondricka 2025-04-23

    Vehicle year: 2003

I bought this car used from a friend in like-new condition. It was intended as a first car for my daughter, who has been driving it for over 4 years now. Initially, she wasn't too keen on it, citing issues such as limited visibility of the front bumper, the need for extra turning and driving space, and the car's low ground clearance due to sporty modifications made by the previous owner. However, she has grown to love it and wouldn't give it up for anything. I have made sure to keep up with regular servicing, and apart from the cost of brakes and tires, we have had no other major expenses. Our trusted mechanic has informed us that parts for this car can be hard to come by and often need to be specially ordered from overseas. Despite this, our car, Midnight, has clocked 94,000 miles, 48,000 of which were driven by my daughter during her college years. It still runs strong and performs well on high-grade fuel. As of 4/25/2017, we have been keeping up with regular servicing, and our mechanic checks everything, including the wipers, during each visit. We had to replace the radio/disc player, but apart from that, there have been no major repairs or issues. My daughter swears that the car gets 36 miles to the gallon, and it has proven to be more reliable than any of our other vehicles. It even handles well in the snow. We have no complaints, and my daughter is so happy with it that we are on the lookout for a second one, just in case. I couldn't ask for a better car for her.

I really enjoyed owning the '05 vehicle so much that I decided to buy an '06. I would definitely recommend this car to anyone looking for a compact car.

  4. Schuyler Gusikowski 2025-04-22

    Vehicle year: 2005

After renting two Aerios, once to drivefrom Seattle to Portland, OR, and back, and second to use for a week in Palm Springs, CA, I literally fell in love with this powerful, frisky, solid, and adorable car! I owned a high end Cadillac, and longed for a reason to move to Suzuki. Even bought an extended warranty, and plan to drive this equisite and personable charmer as long as it's willing to go . . .It sucks up everything on the highway, and also slides easily into tight city parking. Heartily recommend!!

  5. Alexis Conn 2025-04-20

    Vehicle year: 2007

So far, this car has been great! You'll be happy to know that we average 30 mpg. As older and very tall people, we find the comfort and convenience of this inexpensive car to be all that we could ask for.
