The Suzuki Aerio (also called the Liana – Life In A New Age – in China, Pakistan, Europe, Israel, South Asia, Taiwan and Australia or Baleno for sedan version in Indonesia) is a subcompact car that was built by Suzuki. It was introduced in 2001 as a replacement for the Suzuki Esteem/Baleno, with a tall 5-door SX model hatchback (for maximum inner room efficiency) and a 4-door sedan body. It featured two different 16-valve gasoline inline-four engines, with 1.5-litre and 1.8-litre, this one capable of 125 PS (92 kW; 123 hp) JIS. Production was discontinued in 2007 around the world and replaced by the Suzuki SX4, except in Pakistan (2006 to 2014) and China where production was continued by Changhe-Suzuki until 2019.

Overview

Models in North America got a larger and more powerful 2.0-litre engine with 145 hp (108 kW). A 5-speed manual transmission was standard with a 4-speed automatic optional. All-wheel-drive was available, but only with the automatic. American Aerios came in two trim levels: the S and GS (2002–2004), S and SX (2005), and Base and Premium (2006–2007). Key changes over the years included an upgrade to a new 2.3-liter 155 hp (116 kW; 157 PS) engine in 2004, a major styling and interior refresh in 2005 (replacing the digital instruments with conventional analog ones), and the standardization of antilock brakes in 2006. Only the Aerio sedan remained for 2007, as the hatchback had been shelved to make room for the new 2007 SX4 hatchback. Likewise, the Aerio sedan bowed out at year's end, making way for the 2008 SX4 Sport sedan. Throughout its run, the Aerio was distinct for being the most affordable car in America to offer all-wheel drive.

In Europe, where the car was called Liana (an acronym for Life In A New Age), it was seen as a more affordable alternative to small family cars or to mini MPVs, introducing a new generation of Suzuki M engines, with 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre I4 engine. All-wheel drive was available on the bigger engine. In 2004, the car was restyled with a look that closer resembled the Japanese version, and also received a Diesel engine, with a 16-valve version of the 1.4-litre HDi engine supplied by PSA Peugeot Citroën, capable of 90 PS (66 kW; 89 hp) thanks to common rail direct injection and a variable geometry turbocharger.

The Liana remained in production in Pakistan in 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre variants until 2014.

    This car can be a lot of fun to drive, especially if you make some adjustments to the cb's and the front suspension. However, if you don't make these adjustments, it can pull dramatically when you accelerate or go over dips, which could be dangerous, especially for a teenager driving it as a tuner car. Unfortunately, if you're looking to change the body kit and add other aftermarket modifications, you may be out of luck. I called 500 parts suppliers and none of them had any aftermarket body kits available. Lastly, I had the car for only 2 months and decided to trade it in for an STI to go with my EvoVIII. I was able to get $16 for it with only 1800 miles on it.

    This is our second car. I bought it as a backup. We loved this car in the beginning. We bought it used, and it was well taken care of. Since my teenager was driving it, she loved it and unfortunately, she wrecked the first one. I tried to make sure I kept this one in good shape by taking it for servicing checks every 6 weeks. She wanted it to last, but unfortunately, it didn't, not even with great care. All of a sudden, the timing went on it, and I had to pay $600 more for other parts. Because my daughter loved it so much, I had to pay to have it fixed, which was expensive. Then, 48 hours after my daughter got it back, the low oil pressure light came on, and it had to be towed, which was another big expense. Four different places say the engine is done, and they think the engine seized. I was told by 3 out of the 4 places that no engine is available within 900 miles, and the engine that is 900 miles away has a blown head gasket. I'm upset. The inside of my daughter's car is like brand new, the car's body is also like brand new, and the paint is in perfect condition. I invested in a brand new paint job the month before. The car now sits in our garage, and my credit card is full of the expense.

    This car has been with me through 4 different house moves in 2 states. What impresses me the most is that the rear seats fold down truly flat. I have fitted a washing machine, love seats, and a rolled futon mattress into this baby. Although the ride can be noisy at times, it has been mechanically reliable for the past 12 years, with only the clutch needing attention at 100k miles. I hope to get an even 200k miles out of this car. It's definitely a great value for the price!

    This car is incredibly reliable. Although I had to change the brakes a couple of times in the first two years, I installed ceramic brakes and have had no issues since. With 80,000 miles on the clock, it still runs like a dream. The only minor issue I have encountered is that it can slide on slick roads during wet winters, which I have been told is due to its light weight. However, I have good winter tires and have only had to replace them twice.

    I really like the room and AWD. The car performs great in all conditions and gets decent mileage, averaging 27 plus MPG during my commute. When there is no traffic, I can get up to 30 MPG at 65 to 70 MPH. However, the stereo system is terrible in the PA mountains. My only complaint is that it goes through factory front pads every 12k, but I found that it goes 30k with aftermarket pads. Despite this, I have over 175000 miles on the car and it shows no signs of giving up.

    I'm really impressed with the significant improvement over the 2000 Esteem which I traded in. I've already driven 7000 miles and it's been smooth, fun, and trouble-free. It's as smooth as a Camry and quieter than a Civic sedan on the highway. Even in inclement weather, the handling is solid. I've found that handling in high gusty wind is manageable and not troublesome. I opted for the off-white pearl color which hides dirt well and so far, I haven't had any paint issues. The stereo is hi-fi quality and not sizzly or boomy, and the AC cooling is adequate. The only issue I've had is that the engine tends to ping in hot weather (85% plus) under load conditions (hills with AC on, or steep hills in general). However, using 89 Octane alleviates the problem. I can't understand why the critics are so down on this car. I wonder if they've actually driven the sedan.

    I bought this 2003 Suzuki Aerio brand new and I have a lot of good things to say about it! It's incredibly roomy and comfortable, and it's also very fuel-efficient for a front-wheel drive vehicle. While I have had a few problems with this car, such as frequent wheel alignment issues, the brakes are very good and the engine is super quiet compared to other cars in its class. Unfortunately, the body is made of cheap materials and the front bumper and side skirt that came with it were also made of cheap materials and have since flown away. However, the highway drive is fantastic and the view is very comfortable. Overall, it's a great car!
