The Suzuki Aerio (also called the Liana – Life In A New Age – in China, Pakistan, Europe, Israel, South Asia, Taiwan and Australia or Baleno for sedan version in Indonesia) is a subcompact car that was built by Suzuki. It was introduced in 2001 as a replacement for the Suzuki Esteem/Baleno, with a tall 5-door SX model hatchback (for maximum inner room efficiency) and a 4-door sedan body. It featured two different 16-valve gasoline inline-four engines, with 1.5-litre and 1.8-litre, this one capable of 125 PS (92 kW; 123 hp) JIS. Production was discontinued in 2007 around the world and replaced by the Suzuki SX4, except in Pakistan (2006 to 2014) and China where production was continued by Changhe-Suzuki until 2019.

Overview

Models in North America got a larger and more powerful 2.0-litre engine with 145 hp (108 kW). A 5-speed manual transmission was standard with a 4-speed automatic optional. All-wheel-drive was available, but only with the automatic. American Aerios came in two trim levels: the S and GS (2002–2004), S and SX (2005), and Base and Premium (2006–2007). Key changes over the years included an upgrade to a new 2.3-liter 155 hp (116 kW; 157 PS) engine in 2004, a major styling and interior refresh in 2005 (replacing the digital instruments with conventional analog ones), and the standardization of antilock brakes in 2006. Only the Aerio sedan remained for 2007, as the hatchback had been shelved to make room for the new 2007 SX4 hatchback. Likewise, the Aerio sedan bowed out at year's end, making way for the 2008 SX4 Sport sedan. Throughout its run, the Aerio was distinct for being the most affordable car in America to offer all-wheel drive.

In Europe, where the car was called Liana (an acronym for Life In A New Age), it was seen as a more affordable alternative to small family cars or to mini MPVs, introducing a new generation of Suzuki M engines, with 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre I4 engine. All-wheel drive was available on the bigger engine. In 2004, the car was restyled with a look that closer resembled the Japanese version, and also received a Diesel engine, with a 16-valve version of the 1.4-litre HDi engine supplied by PSA Peugeot Citroën, capable of 90 PS (66 kW; 89 hp) thanks to common rail direct injection and a variable geometry turbocharger.

The Liana remained in production in Pakistan in 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre variants until 2014.

Common Suzuki Aerio problems

The Suzuki Aerio, produced from 2001 to 2007, has been reported to have several common issues by owners. These problems include engine misfires, oil leaks, transmission issues, electrical problems, and brake and suspension issues.

One of the most common issues reported is engine misfires, which can be caused by faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, or fuel injectors. Symptoms of engine misfires include rough idling, stalling, and reduced fuel efficiency. To resolve this issue, it is recommended to replace the faulty parts and perform a tune-up.

Oil leaks are another common problem reported by Suzuki Aerio owners. These leaks can be caused by worn-out gaskets or seals, and can lead to engine damage if left unaddressed. Symptoms of oil leaks include low oil levels, smoke from the engine, and oil stains on the ground. To fix this issue, it is recommended to replace the faulty gaskets or seals and refill the engine oil.

Transmission issues have also been reported by Suzuki Aerio owners. These issues can be caused by low transmission fluid levels, worn-out clutch plates, or faulty solenoids. Symptoms of transmission issues include slipping, hesitating, or rough shifting. To resolve this issue, it is recommended to check the transmission fluid level, replace the worn-out parts, and perform a transmission flush.

Electrical problems have been reported by some Suzuki Aerio owners, particularly with the SX model. These issues can be caused by faulty wiring, blown fuses, or malfunctioning sensors. Symptoms of electrical problems include flickering dashboard lights, power window malfunctions, and radio cutouts. To fix this issue, it is recommended to replace the faulty parts and perform a diagnostic test.

Brake and suspension issues have also been reported by Suzuki Aerio owners. These issues can be caused by worn-out brake pads, damaged rotors, or faulty shocks and struts. Symptoms of brake and suspension issues include noise or vibration when driving, reduced braking performance, and uneven tire wear. To resolve this issue, it is recommended to replace the worn-out parts and perform a brake and suspension inspection.

It is important to note that regular maintenance and care can help prevent these common issues in the Suzuki Aerio. This includes regular oil changes, tire rotations, and inspections. Addressing any issues as soon as they arise can also help ensure the longevity of the vehicle.

Latest negative Suzuki Aerio car reviews

  1. Federico Smitham 2025-02-21

    Vehicle year: 2006

It's a good car! Although, when we went on vacation and unplugged the battery cable and came back and plugged it back in, the stereo was locked. Unfortunately, we can't use the stereo anymore - it's locked forever!

  2. Tyrell Corwin 2025-02-15

    Vehicle year: 2005

My Suzuki Aerio has had several issues, including bushings coming out of the sway bar multiple times, a failed power door lock, and poor gas mileage. Additionally, the factory alignment defect destroyed all four tires, and the rims have been scratched and gouged during attempts to repair the defects. Despite these challenges, I had the viscous coupling replaced for AWD and installed new modified bushings to finally fix the sway bar issue. Although there is still a clunking noise from the front end and the styrofoam is detached from the rear bumper, I am confident in the steps I have taken to address these issues.

  3. Horace Jenkins 2025-02-06

    Vehicle year: 2007

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my Suzuki Aerio. I bought it brand new for just over $15k and drove it for several years until I switched to a Nissan Frontier. During that time, I put almost 50k miles on it without any major issues. While it may not be as refined or well-designed as some of its competitors, I still believe it's a great value for the price. If you can handle its quirks and don't mind a slightly rough ride, it's definitely worth considering. I do miss the fuel economy of the Aerio, though! My mother has been using the car for over a year now and hasn't had any problems. The AWD is a great safety feature, especially here in snowy N. Thanks for reading!

  4. Willis Stiedemann 2025-02-03

    Vehicle year: 2003

I purchased this cat with 55K miles on it and sold it at 92K miles when the bearings and brake pads needed to be changed. Although the car is decent, the engine light turned on and off several times during my ownership. Fortunately, nothing serious was found and it appeared to be a minor computer glitch. However, the car is not suitable for cold weather and snow driving. At freezing temperatures, all pneumatics such as locks and windows stop working, causing a lot of stress while driving in the snow. Overall, the car is worth its price as long as you live in a warm climate all year round.

  5. Juston Mraz 2025-01-13

    Vehicle year: 2005

The car is quite friendly. However, I did have to change all 4 tires at 18000k's and the front disc brakes at 30,000k. Additionally, I was informed that the rear shocks are on their way out. Not to mention the sticking shifter. At 70 years of age, I am hardly a cowboy behind the wheel.

  1. Jerry Leffler 2025-02-18

    Vehicle year: 2006

I traded my Subaru Legacy for this sweet ride. It has a smooth ride, good gas mileage, an attractive exterior, and a nice interior. Plus, I saved a bunch of money by buying it instead of a new Subaru. Its AWD system is the same, and it has a good driving position and a higher seat height (which is important if you have a bad back). The seat is higher than the ones in Subarus. This is a great little wagon.

  2. Brent Kertzmann 2025-02-15

    Vehicle year: 2003

Your car sounds like a reliable and economical choice! Although it may not have all the latest features, it has served you well with only regular maintenance needed. It's impressive that you've never had to do any major repairs. The 5-CD player is a nice touch! I can understand how the low ground clearance and limited legroom can be frustrating, but overall it seems like a great car. Thank you for sharing your experience with it!

  3. Gilbert Fisher 2025-02-13

    Vehicle year: 2002

Great vehicle! I fell in love with it at first sight. It handles really well and has lots of room for hauling. Plus, it turns a lot of heads going down the street. This is actually my second Suzuki - the other one only needed oil changes and tire rotations.

  4. Bradly Kunze 2025-02-11

    Vehicle year: 2005

When I first got this vehicle, I was really worried about the gas mileage. I wasn't happy with it and I decided to speak with the dealership. They assured me that it was normal and that it would improve within the next 5,000 miles. I was really skeptical at first, but they were absolutely right. Now that I have 10,000 miles on the car, I can honestly say that I never regret my decision to buy it.

  5. Saul Schaden 2025-02-07

    Vehicle year: 2007

We were shopping for a fuel-efficient car that had good safety ratings, warranty, and an affordable price. We ended up buying the all-wheel-drive automatic version of the Aerio, and it drives great. While it's not as peppy as the '03 Mustang we traded in, it's still a lot of fun to drive. The best feature of this car is the roominess inside, which is very deceiving!
