Suzuki Aerio problems

The Suzuki Aerio (also called the Liana – Life In A New Age – in China, Pakistan, Europe, Israel, South Asia, Taiwan and Australia or Baleno for sedan version in Indonesia) is a subcompact car that was built by Suzuki. It was introduced in 2001 as a replacement for the Suzuki Esteem/Baleno, with a tall 5-door SX model hatchback (for maximum inner room efficiency) and a 4-door sedan body. It featured two different 16-valve gasoline inline-four engines, with 1.5-litre and 1.8-litre, this one capable of 125 PS (92 kW; 123 hp) JIS. Production was discontinued in 2007 around the world and replaced by the Suzuki SX4, except in Pakistan (2006 to 2014) and China where production was continued by Changhe-Suzuki until 2019.

Overview

Models in North America got a larger and more powerful 2.0-litre engine with 145 hp (108 kW). A 5-speed manual transmission was standard with a 4-speed automatic optional. All-wheel-drive was available, but only with the automatic. American Aerios came in two trim levels: the S and GS (2002–2004), S and SX (2005), and Base and Premium (2006–2007). Key changes over the years included an upgrade to a new 2.3-liter 155 hp (116 kW; 157 PS) engine in 2004, a major styling and interior refresh in 2005 (replacing the digital instruments with conventional analog ones), and the standardization of antilock brakes in 2006. Only the Aerio sedan remained for 2007, as the hatchback had been shelved to make room for the new 2007 SX4 hatchback. Likewise, the Aerio sedan bowed out at year's end, making way for the 2008 SX4 Sport sedan. Throughout its run, the Aerio was distinct for being the most affordable car in America to offer all-wheel drive.

In Europe, where the car was called Liana (an acronym for Life In A New Age), it was seen as a more affordable alternative to small family cars or to mini MPVs, introducing a new generation of Suzuki M engines, with 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre I4 engine. All-wheel drive was available on the bigger engine. In 2004, the car was restyled with a look that closer resembled the Japanese version, and also received a Diesel engine, with a 16-valve version of the 1.4-litre HDi engine supplied by PSA Peugeot Citroën, capable of 90 PS (66 kW; 89 hp) thanks to common rail direct injection and a variable geometry turbocharger.

The Liana remained in production in Pakistan in 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre variants until 2014.

Common Suzuki Aerio problems

The Suzuki Aerio, produced from 2001 to 2007, has been reported to have several common issues by owners. These problems include engine misfires, oil leaks, transmission issues, electrical problems, and brake and suspension issues.

One of the most common issues reported is engine misfires, which can be caused by faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, or fuel injectors. Symptoms of engine misfires include rough idling, stalling, and reduced fuel efficiency. To resolve this issue, it is recommended to replace the faulty parts and perform a tune-up.

Oil leaks are another common problem reported by Suzuki Aerio owners. These leaks can be caused by worn-out gaskets or seals, and can lead to engine damage if left unaddressed. Symptoms of oil leaks include low oil levels, smoke from the engine, and oil stains on the ground. To fix this issue, it is recommended to replace the faulty gaskets or seals and refill the engine oil.

Transmission issues have also been reported by Suzuki Aerio owners. These issues can be caused by low transmission fluid levels, worn-out clutch plates, or faulty solenoids. Symptoms of transmission issues include slipping, hesitating, or rough shifting. To resolve this issue, it is recommended to check the transmission fluid level, replace the worn-out parts, and perform a transmission flush.

Electrical problems have been reported by some Suzuki Aerio owners, particularly with the SX model. These issues can be caused by faulty wiring, blown fuses, or malfunctioning sensors. Symptoms of electrical problems include flickering dashboard lights, power window malfunctions, and radio cutouts. To fix this issue, it is recommended to replace the faulty parts and perform a diagnostic test.

Brake and suspension issues have also been reported by Suzuki Aerio owners. These issues can be caused by worn-out brake pads, damaged rotors, or faulty shocks and struts. Symptoms of brake and suspension issues include noise or vibration when driving, reduced braking performance, and uneven tire wear. To resolve this issue, it is recommended to replace the worn-out parts and perform a brake and suspension inspection.

It is important to note that regular maintenance and care can help prevent these common issues in the Suzuki Aerio. This includes regular oil changes, tire rotations, and inspections. Addressing any issues as soon as they arise can also help ensure the longevity of the vehicle.

I almost bought a Subaru RS instead of my Suzuki Aerio. I'm glad that I didn't. I saved a lot of money and now I own the best mountain dirt road long distance commuter I've ever had. I'm still in the honeymoon stage though, so I'll need some time to be more objective.

  2. Rogelio Roob 2024-11-06

    Vehicle year: 2002

I've recently become a career test driver and have had the opportunity to test drive at least 5 or 6 cars in the past two weeks. While the handling of the Aerio was pretty good, I found it to be the least impressive of the bunch. If you're looking for an ugly car, I would recommend the Toyota Echo instead. Unfortunately, the salesperson didn't seem to believe in the product and didn't try to sell me on the car.

  4. Douglas Glover 2024-10-14

    Vehicle year: 2005

I purchased my Aerio brand new a year ago, but unfortunately, I have had to repair it multiple times since then. I have experienced some issues with the front sway bar bushings coming out of the mounting brackets, and there was a mechanical defect that caused damage to six tires. I have also had to get three alignments done, and the power door locks failed. Additionally, I had to address some issues with the front lower control arm bolts, the rear bumper styrofoam, and the heat shield for the exhaust manifold and hood. While it has been a frustrating experience, I am hopeful that these issues will be resolved soon. As a first-time new car owner, I have learned a lot from this experience and will be more prepared in the future. Thank you for your understanding.

  5. Dwight Considine 2024-09-07

    Vehicle year: 2005

Although I initially liked the look of my car, the frequent repairs, particularly for the wheel bearings, and other mechanical issues have made me reconsider recommending it to others. Despite being a proud owner of three Suzukis prior to this one, I cannot in good conscience recommend this brand anymore. The experience has been a nightmare, including the Suzuki repair service causing additional problems. Furthermore, the car's fuel efficiency is only 17 miles to the gallon and the cruise control is not functional. It is clear that improvements are needed in the design and manufacturing of this vehicle.

  1. Reid Kuphal 2024-11-13

    Vehicle year: 2004

I've had my Aerio SX for 14 months now and I absolutely love it! If I had to make the choice again, I would definitely buy the exact same car. It fits my needs perfectly, especially when it comes to carrying my agility dog around while still having plenty of room for passengers. After researching other wagons, I found that the Aerio SX was far superior in meeting my needs. It's not only practical, but also fun and comfortable to drive. Suzuki really hit the mark with the design of this car!

  2. Jeramie Walker 2024-11-08

    Vehicle year: 2004

After my wife's Escort was rendered undriveable in an accident, we were on the lookout for a replacement that was both economical and had a bit of pizzazz. Unfortunately, our budget didn't allow for a Corolla or Civic, and we didn't feel the same warmth towards a Hyundai or Kia. However, as soon as we sat in the Aerio, we knew it was the one for us. The headroom is massive, with enough space to accommodate even a six-foot-tall person with inches to spare. The car comes with a plethora of standard features, including AC, a 6-disc CD player, power windows and locks, and heated mirrors. We're averaging almost 30 MPG, and the power is simply exhilarating. Buckle up and hang on!

  3. General Harvey 2024-11-07

    Vehicle year: 2007

This is a big car in a little package! It's fun, safe, and very roomy. The Aerio is very practical, especially if you have pets or children.

  4. Al Rice 2024-10-29

    Vehicle year: 2006

I had a couple of TSBs to take care of on my Suzuki Aerio, but since then the car has been great! I'm getting better than the rated mpg and I love the amount of room it has for such a small car. Although the interior may seem a little weak or 'cheap', the rest of the car is fantastic.

  5. Pietro Langworth 2024-10-28

    Vehicle year: 2004

I drove my Aerio from Washington state to Texas and back. On each drive, we averaged about 32 miles to the gallon. In town, I get about 30-40 miles per gallon. The Aerio was a comfortable car, and hardly anyone had seen one yet, which made it that much more fun!
