Suzuki Grand vitara problems

The Suzuki Vitara is a series of SUVs produced by Suzuki in five generations since 1988. The second and third generation were known as the Suzuki Grand Vitara, while the fourth generation eschewing the "Grand" prefix. In Japan and a number of other markets, all generations have used the name Suzuki Escudo (Japanese: スズキ・エスクード, Hepburn: Suzuki Esukūdo).

The choice of the name "Vitara" was inspired by the Latin word vita, as in English word vitality. "Escudo", the name primarily used in the Japanese Domestic Market, refers to the "escudo", the monetary unit of Portugal before adoption of the Euro. The original series was designed to fill the slot above the Suzuki Jimny. The first generation was known as Suzuki Sidekick in the United States. The North American version was produced as a joint venture between Suzuki and General Motors known as CAMI. It was also sold as the Santana 300 and 350 in Spain and in the Japanese market, it was also sold as the Mazda Proceed Levante.

The second generation was launched in 1998 under the "Grand Vitara" badge in most markets. It was accompanied by a still larger SUV known as the Suzuki XL-7 (known as Grand Escudo in Japan). The third generation was launched in 2005.

The fourth generation, released in 2015, reverted to the original name "Vitara" in most markets, but shifted from an off-road SUV towards a more road-oriented crossover style. It shares the platform and many components with the slightly larger SX4 S-Cross.

The model introduced in 2022 for the Indian market only reuses the "Grand Vitara" nameplate. It is slightly larger than the SX4 S-Cross.

Common Suzuki Grand vitara problems

The Suzuki Grand Vitara is known for several common problems that car owners have reported. These issues range from mechanical faults to electrical problems, and they can significantly impact the vehicle's performance and safety. Here are some of the most common problems with the Suzuki Grand Vitara:

  • Timing Chain Problems: Another common problem with the Suzuki Grand Vitara is related to the timing chain. When the tensioners in the timing chain fail, it can cause a rattling noise from the engine. If not addressed, this problem can lead to more severe issues, such as damage to the timing chain itself. The average quote for a timing chain replacement on a Suzuki is £825.50 when booked through WhoCanFixMyCar.
  • EGR Valve Problems: The EGR valve in the Suzuki Grand Vitara is known to become clogged up with carbon, which can cause a loss in engine power and rough engine idling. If you think you're having problems with your EGR valve, you can get a replacement through one of the garages in the WhoCanFixMyCar network. The average quote for an EGR valve replacement on a Suzuki is £212.97 when booked with WhoCanFixMyCar.
  • DPF Problems: The diesel particulate filter (DPF) in the Suzuki Grand Vitara is prone to developing problems due to the model's need for regular clean oil changes. This issue is particularly common in the Vitara's diesel models.
  • Power Unit Vulnerabilities: The power units for 2.0 and 2.4 liters in the Suzuki Grand Vitara have a vulnerability in the drive belt rollers. These rollers must be replaced when the mileage is 45-50 thousand km to avoid potential problems.
  • Power Steering Issues: Some Grand Vitara models have experienced issues with the power steering, causing difficulty in steering and a recall by Suzuki. This problem is due to weak plastic components in the pump belt adjuster pulley, which can deteriorate and break due to heat.
  • Airbag Issues: The front passenger side airbag in the Grand Vitara can become loose and visibly move. This issue is not too common, but it's essential not to ignore it. Replacement airbag units are available, but it's recommended to leave this job to professionals due to the safety risks and the presence of harmful chemicals and explosives in airbags.
  • Seatbelt Alarm Problems: Later models of the XL7 have experienced issues with the passenger seat sensor, causing the seatbelt alarm to sound even if the seat belt is secured. This problem is due to a faulty passenger seat sensor, which can be replaced with new sensors available on parts lists and are relatively easy to install.
  • Water Pump Seizure: The Grand-Vitara has a known issue with its water pumps, which are prone to seizing up. This problem can cause the engine to stall and requires replacement of both the water pump and the timing belt in most cases.
  • Hydraulic Valve Lifters: Some Grand Vitara models experience a loud ticking noise when starting the engine from cold. This problem is often due to bleed down of the hydraulic valve lifters and can be resolved with appropriate maintenance.

These common problems with the Suzuki Grand Vitara can significantly impact the vehicle's performance and safety. Regular maintenance, timely repairs, and using genuine quality parts can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

What year is bad for a Suzuki Grand Vitara?

(Suzuki) is recalling certain 2010-2013 Kizashi and 2006-2013 Grand Vitara vehicles. The front passenger leather seat may shrink due to high humidity and high temperature. As a result, the occupant classification system (OCS) sensor mat may not accurately detect if an adult or child is occupying the seat.

Is a Suzuki Grand Vitara reliable?

Overall, owners don't need to worry about the Suzuki Grand Vitara, because it has no major problems. Most of its issues are easily fixed and don't involve major components like the engine or transmissions, which are the ones that are most expensive to repair.

What is the common problem with Suzuki Vitara?

Have you noticed oil leaking around the timing chain cover? This is a common problem on the Grand Vitara, which is caused by the timing chain cover gasket failing. If you can hear a sort of ticking noise coming from the timing chain as well, this means that the tensioner is failing.

How long should a Suzuki Grand Vitara last?

What is Suzuki Vitara lifespan? The estimated lifespan of a Suzuki Vitara is 225,000mi, before reaching the life expectancy upper limit. Fuel type is a major factor when looking into a vehicles lifespan/life expectancy.

  • Summary: I bought this car used one year ago and have had to change the low beam lights twice and now they are out again. At night I drive with the high beams on and they are so weak no one can tell. Last month the engine started surging making the car try to take off wether in neutral, park or drive. I have to hold the brake very strongly to keep the car from taking off. This is extremely dangerous for obvious reasons and someone is going to get seriously hurt or killed because Suzuki will not acknowledge or fix this problem. This will be my last Suzuki product ever. I can't afford to get another vehicle right now so I'm having to drive this nightmare daily.

    Vehicle year: 2000

I am extremely confident in my vehicle now! After receiving a new motor and multiple trips to the dealership, the issue with the CHECK ENGINE light was finally resolved. Despite the initial difficulty in identifying the problem, the dealership and even district and regional teams worked tirelessly to find a solution. Although the vehicle was in the shop for a significant amount of time, I am now pleased to say that it is running smoothly. I am confident in the quality of my vehicle and the efforts made to ensure its reliability.

  2. Carleton Bartoletti 2025-03-11

    Vehicle year: 2013

We recently purchased a lightly used 2011 GV Limited with only 5700 miles on the odometer. After owning it for two months and putting another 1500 miles on it, we have discovered what we like and what we don't. Firstly, we absolutely love the unique look of the car. It's refreshing to have something different from the typical RAV4, CRV, or Forester that everyone else seems to own around here. The seats are comfortable, the stereo is great, and the standard GPS is a nice touch. Although the ride can be a bit rough at times, it's still manageable. However, we did notice that the rear seat is a bit more cramped and the cargo space is lacking compared to our Forester. Additionally, the gas mileage is not great. We knew that we would be taking a hit on mpg's compared to the Subaru we traded in, but we are not even getting the listed mpg. We are currently getting around 16-17 mpg in mixed city/highway driving. Overall, it's a good car for the money.

I recently purchased a 2010 Grand Vitara Premium model with the 4-cylinder engine based on the reviews given here. However, I wanted to share my experience with the AC issue. Unfortunately, these models have a known failing AC issue that can cause the interior compartment to flood if you use the AC. There is a connection that goes through the firewall between the internal AC system and the external drain pipe that will eventually fail. Unfortunately, there is no replaceable part to fix the issue, and you would need to get the entire internal one-piece component. I hope this information helps you make an informed decision.

I purchased this SUV brand new with only 7 miles on the odometer. Despite several recalls, I have invested in monthly repairs, totaling a significant amount of money. Unfortunately, this vehicle has been a complete waste of my time and resources, with only 50,000 miles on it.

It does consume quite a bit of fuel, more than a logging truck in fact.

I hope you had a great trip from Colorado to Wisconsin in your Grand Vitara! It's great to hear that you found the vehicle to be comfortable and reliable, even in snowy weather. It's impressive that you were able to drive for 5 hours without needing to stop and stretch. I'm glad to hear that the Grand Vitara was up to the challenge of driving through rain and sleet/snow on your return home. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I'm 58 years old and I've owned Chevys, Fords, Buicks, Oldsmobiles, and Cadillacs, but I have to say that this is the most enjoyable car I've ever had. It has both 2 and 4 wheel drive, making it great in both snow and heat. Overall, it's a fantastic car for the money!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my Suzuki. I bought it brand new back in September 2002 and it's been a great car ever since. I was considering a Jeep Wrangler at the time, but the Suzuki was more affordable and had more features for the price. Even after driving it for 96,000 miles, it still runs like a dream. This summer, I was able to get an impressive 24 mpg on the highway. And the best part? It's completely paid off now!

Your 2007 Suzuki Grand Vitara sounds like an amazing car! It's great to hear that it's still going strong after all these years and miles. It's impressive that you've only had to replace the computer once in all that time. The only other issue you mentioned is with the headlights, but overall it sounds like a perfect car.

(Too many updates so this may not read smoothly.) Hi there! I bought my Grand Vitara new for $15k in 2011 (last one on the lot) and it was a steal. Although the former Suzuki dealership lost the GPS and owners manual, I use my iPhone for GPS and Googled the manual. I've owned it for almost 8 years and it just turned 56,000 miles with no problems. I live in the Phoenix, Arizona area where it’s fairly flat and 25 MPG is normal. Being the base model, it has a 5-speed manual and rear-wheel drive and that does the job. I've never towed anything and it doesn’t have roof rails so I don’t know how it would be for hauling. The cargo room is good and the side-opening rear gate is perfect for me. The front seats are not very comfortable after an hour of sitting although I did add sheepskin seat covers. I've gone through three sets of tires so far — the original Yokohama’s wore out quickly, then the Hankooks, and now the Goodyears are getting old and need replacing. However, I've had NO problems until the headlight relays. It’s reliable and has never let me down. It still looks good and the paint hasn’t oxidized (always garaged). I use synthetic oil and drive about 10,000 miles between changes. Road and tire noise isn’t too bad. Our other car is a Cadillac CT6 AWD so I’m familiar with comfort and quiet. It’s a good car; probably not much resale value anymore but it just keeps running. I also got a 2021 Buick Enclave Avenue but kept the Suzuki. Annual tags and insurance are cheaper the older it gets so for a few hundred dollars a year I’ll keep it. Fourth battery in 12 years, but no problems. I’ll keep it for now. My base model Grand Vitara isn’t fancy. The base model only comes in black. It’s a 5-speed manual without cruise control. I’ve had it for over 12 years and put 60,000 miles on it and it’s my local run-around vehicle. It was marked down from an overpriced $23k sticker to $15k as it was the last Suzuki on the dealer’s lot. Some things were missing, like the standard nav and the owner’s manual but the markdown made up for it.I had never experienced any issues with my Grand Vitara until 2022, when the hi & lo beam headlight relays stopped working. While I don't want to complain about the vehicle, I was surprised by the high cost of the relays at auto parts stores ($35-45/ea). Fortunately, I found them on Amazon for less than $20 for 2. The seats can be uncomfortable during long drives, so I added sheepskin covers with extra padding. This has helped with comfort, and my seat fabric still looks like new underneath. Before purchasing the Grand Vitara, I read every review I could find. The main complaint seemed to be about the left-side opening hatch, but I personally like it. The vehicle gets about 20-25mpg, and while it's not geared for high speed or economy, it does have a timing chain instead of a belt. The spare tire is hung on the hatch, and I have a bike carrier that straps onto it. The Grand Vitara also has 4-wheel disc brakes, which is not all that common in 2010. While it doesn't have any of the now-standard Nannies, it does have single climate control, anti-lock brakes, and electronic stability control. Overall, I find the Grand Vitara to be a convenient size for 1 or 2 people, with room for 2 more if necessary.
