Suzuki Grand vitara problems

The Suzuki Vitara is a series of SUVs produced by Suzuki in five generations since 1988. The second and third generation were known as the Suzuki Grand Vitara, while the fourth generation eschewing the "Grand" prefix. In Japan and a number of other markets, all generations have used the name Suzuki Escudo (Japanese: スズキ・エスクード, Hepburn: Suzuki Esukūdo).
The choice of the name "Vitara" was inspired by the Latin word vita, as in English word vitality. "Escudo", the name primarily used in the Japanese Domestic Market, refers to the "escudo", the monetary unit of Portugal before adoption of the Euro. The original series was designed to fill the slot above the Suzuki Jimny. The first generation was known as Suzuki Sidekick in the United States. The North American version was produced as a joint venture between Suzuki and General Motors known as CAMI. It was also sold as the Santana 300 and 350 in Spain and in the Japanese market, it was also sold as the Mazda Proceed Levante.
The second generation was launched in 1998 under the "Grand Vitara" badge in most markets. It was accompanied by a still larger SUV known as the Suzuki XL-7 (known as Grand Escudo in Japan). The third generation was launched in 2005.
The fourth generation, released in 2015, reverted to the original name "Vitara" in most markets, but shifted from an off-road SUV towards a more road-oriented crossover style. It shares the platform and many components with the slightly larger SX4 S-Cross.
The model introduced in 2022 for the Indian market only reuses the "Grand Vitara" nameplate. It is slightly larger than the SX4 S-Cross.

Common Suzuki Grand vitara problems
The Suzuki Grand Vitara is known for several common problems that car owners have reported. These issues range from mechanical faults to electrical problems, and they can significantly impact the vehicle's performance and safety. Here are some of the most common problems with the Suzuki Grand Vitara:
- Timing Chain Problems: Another common problem with the Suzuki Grand Vitara is related to the timing chain. When the tensioners in the timing chain fail, it can cause a rattling noise from the engine. If not addressed, this problem can lead to more severe issues, such as damage to the timing chain itself. The average quote for a timing chain replacement on a Suzuki is £825.50 when booked through WhoCanFixMyCar.
- EGR Valve Problems: The EGR valve in the Suzuki Grand Vitara is known to become clogged up with carbon, which can cause a loss in engine power and rough engine idling. If you think you're having problems with your EGR valve, you can get a replacement through one of the garages in the WhoCanFixMyCar network. The average quote for an EGR valve replacement on a Suzuki is £212.97 when booked with WhoCanFixMyCar.
- DPF Problems: The diesel particulate filter (DPF) in the Suzuki Grand Vitara is prone to developing problems due to the model's need for regular clean oil changes. This issue is particularly common in the Vitara's diesel models.
- Power Unit Vulnerabilities: The power units for 2.0 and 2.4 liters in the Suzuki Grand Vitara have a vulnerability in the drive belt rollers. These rollers must be replaced when the mileage is 45-50 thousand km to avoid potential problems.
- Power Steering Issues: Some Grand Vitara models have experienced issues with the power steering, causing difficulty in steering and a recall by Suzuki. This problem is due to weak plastic components in the pump belt adjuster pulley, which can deteriorate and break due to heat.
- Airbag Issues: The front passenger side airbag in the Grand Vitara can become loose and visibly move. This issue is not too common, but it's essential not to ignore it. Replacement airbag units are available, but it's recommended to leave this job to professionals due to the safety risks and the presence of harmful chemicals and explosives in airbags.
- Seatbelt Alarm Problems: Later models of the XL7 have experienced issues with the passenger seat sensor, causing the seatbelt alarm to sound even if the seat belt is secured. This problem is due to a faulty passenger seat sensor, which can be replaced with new sensors available on parts lists and are relatively easy to install.
- Water Pump Seizure: The Grand-Vitara has a known issue with its water pumps, which are prone to seizing up. This problem can cause the engine to stall and requires replacement of both the water pump and the timing belt in most cases.
- Hydraulic Valve Lifters: Some Grand Vitara models experience a loud ticking noise when starting the engine from cold. This problem is often due to bleed down of the hydraulic valve lifters and can be resolved with appropriate maintenance.
These common problems with the Suzuki Grand Vitara can significantly impact the vehicle's performance and safety. Regular maintenance, timely repairs, and using genuine quality parts can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.
What year is bad for a Suzuki Grand Vitara?
(Suzuki) is recalling certain 2010-2013 Kizashi and 2006-2013 Grand Vitara vehicles. The front passenger leather seat may shrink due to high humidity and high temperature. As a result, the occupant classification system (OCS) sensor mat may not accurately detect if an adult or child is occupying the seat.
Is a Suzuki Grand Vitara reliable?
Overall, owners don't need to worry about the Suzuki Grand Vitara, because it has no major problems. Most of its issues are easily fixed and don't involve major components like the engine or transmissions, which are the ones that are most expensive to repair.
What is the common problem with Suzuki Vitara?
Have you noticed oil leaking around the timing chain cover? This is a common problem on the Grand Vitara, which is caused by the timing chain cover gasket failing. If you can hear a sort of ticking noise coming from the timing chain as well, this means that the tensioner is failing.
How long should a Suzuki Grand Vitara last?
What is Suzuki Vitara lifespan? The estimated lifespan of a Suzuki Vitara is 225,000mi, before reaching the life expectancy upper limit. Fuel type is a major factor when looking into a vehicles lifespan/life expectancy.

- VIN: JS3TE943964
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: I bought this car used one year ago and have had to change the low beam lights twice and now they are out again. At night I drive with the high beams on and they are so weak no one can tell. Last month the engine started surging making the car try to take off wether in neutral, park or drive. I have to hold the brake very strongly to keep the car from taking off. This is extremely dangerous for obvious reasons and someone is going to get seriously hurt or killed because Suzuki will not acknowledge or fix this problem. This will be my last Suzuki product ever. I can't afford to get another vehicle right now so I'm having to drive this nightmare daily.

This vehicle handles great! Its compact size makes it easy to control, and it's a great car for teens to learn to drive in. It has great turning ability and all around this is a great vehicle.

This car is a dream to drive. I was very impressed with all of its standard features, performance, off-road capability, and craftsmanship. It handles well in all weather conditions and has a comfortable ride with plenty of room in the passenger and cargo areas. For an SUV, it is great on gas. I highly recommend it over all the other SUV's in its class. The only thing I regret is not getting the Luxury model with the Smart Pass Entry System.

I recently traded in my 2007 Chevy Colorado for a Suzuki Grand Vitara. I have been driving pickups for the past 12 years and have always been happy with them, until the Colorado came along. However, that's a story for another day. I decided to switch to an SUV for its cargo capacity and wanted something compact and different. In the 90s, I owned a Geo Metro and my wife had a Geo Tracker, both of which were very reliable and well-made. So, it was a natural choice to go for the Grand Vitara. I absolutely love this SUV! It's very well-made, comfortable, and looks great. The only downside is the 16-gallon gas tank, which is too small for my liking. Additionally, the radio is not up to par as it is too dim. Would I make the same choice again? Absolutely! You would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't consider this SUV.

Overall, I think this is an excellent vehicle. Despite having over 85k miles on an '08, I have not had any serious concerns. However, the stock tires (Yokohama) were not great and I had 2 non-repairable flats in less than 5k miles. I ended up replacing all 4 tires with less than 11k miles. It took me several months, numerous trips to the dealer, and countless phone calls to resolve the issue of dust. How can a true SUV not be able to handle a gravel road without choking you with dust? Fortunately, I was able to solve the problem (it was simple! Just keep the control set to 'outside'). Overall, I am very pleased with the vehicle. I drive on 35-40 miles of scoria (gravel roads) on a daily basis and the GV has held up exceptionally well.

Hey there! I noticed that your brother bought a 2007 CRV, but I personally prefer this vehicle much more! It has just as many options and more power, which is awesome. The only downside I've noticed is the fuel economy, as I'm averaging about 16 mpg without lead footing here in Pittsburgh. I've also noticed a rear tire wear problem, but I'm planning on getting a 4 wheel alignment done as suggested. Overall, I think it's a great car for the price and I don't think it's worth shelling out the extra money for the Rav4, CRV, or Santa Fe.

It does consume quite a bit of fuel, more than a logging truck in fact.

Hi there! I've owned this car since 36k miles and now it's at 65k. It's been a great experience so far! Although it can be a bit challenging to find parts and accessories, it's been very reliable and feels like a mini 4Runner. The limited edition is quite rare - I've only seen 3 in my whole life - but it comes with a very useful package. I've never had to take it to the shop, and I only do regular oil changes. It's amazing how high the resale price is considering that this is a budget SUV!

I recently purchased a 2010 Grand Vitara Premium model with the 4-cylinder engine based on the reviews given here. However, I wanted to share my experience with the AC issue. Unfortunately, these models have a known failing AC issue that can cause the interior compartment to flood if you use the AC. There is a connection that goes through the firewall between the internal AC system and the external drain pipe that will eventually fail. Unfortunately, there is no replaceable part to fix the issue, and you would need to get the entire internal one-piece component. Please keep this in mind when considering this model.

In July 2007, I upgraded to a 2006 Grand Vitara with an auto 4x4 feature, replacing my 2004 Ford Explorer. While the vehicle handles well on normal roads, it struggles on icy or slick surfaces, swerving left to right. Despite having it checked out by the dealer, I was told that there was nothing wrong and that I must have been driving too fast for the conditions. However, I find it hard to believe as everyone else was passing me. Although the 4x4 feature helps when I stomp on it, it starts slipping again when I let off. As a result, I don't feel safe in this car and will be trading it off soon. I have decided to go back to Ford, where I feel more confident in their vehicles' safety and reliability.
