Common Suzuki Xl7 problems

The Suzuki XL7, a midsize SUV produced from 2001 to 2009, has been known to have several common issues based on complaints from owners. These problems span across various components, including the engine, transmission, suspension, electrical system, and more.

  • Transmission Problems: Transmission issues are common in the Suzuki XL7, with both first and second generations experiencing problems such as rough shifting, slipping gears, and failure to engage in gears.
  • Suspension Problems: Suspension issues, such as worn-out bushings, sway bar links, and control arm bushings, are common in the first generation of the Suzuki XL7.
  • Electrical Problems: Electrical issues, including failed door locks and power window motors, are common in both generations of the Suzuki XL7.
  • Timing Chain Failure: The timing chain is a critical component of the Suzuki XL7's engine. The lack of lubrication is a common cause of timing chain failure, which can lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly.
  • Steering Wheel Squeak: Some Suzuki XL7 owners have reported a squeaky noise coming from the steering wheel, which Suzuki has not been able to fix.
  • Power Steering, Heating Systems, and Wheel Bearing Hubs: These components have been reported as common problems in the Suzuki XL7, with repairs costing anywhere from $1800 to $3500 depending on the extent of the damage.

These common issues with the Suzuki XL7 can be attributed to various factors, including the year of production, maintenance history, and specific components of the vehicle. While the Suzuki XL7 is generally considered a reliable and durable vehicle, it is not immune to problems, and owners should be aware of these common issues to ensure proper maintenance and timely repairs.

What year should I avoid the Suzuki XL-7?

How many miles can a Suzuki XL-7 last?

That includes one accident (which did far more damage to the Dodge Stratus than it did to the XL7... ...and the XL7 went strong for about 200,000 miles afterwards... This latest one I bought is also a 2002; with 129,000 miles on it, so I'm expecting to have many years before it reaches the same point as the original.

Why did they stop making Suzuki XL-7?

The automaker pulled the plug on production in May 2009. Suzuki's major failing across the board in the U.S. was that its products weren't distinctive enough to give the brand the traction it needed to establish a sustainable presence. Part of the problem was a sharp decline in support from GM.

  • Date Complaint: 2023-12-07
  • VIN: JS3TX92V044
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I have this airbag light on problem stated below. It seems it should be a safety recall. Possible solution for Airbag light on Seat Sensor Ok, I'm going to ask a couple of questions and hope that [XXX] or someone with knowledge chimes in. I originally had this problem in my wife's car a couple of months ago, airbag light on, clock flashing after going over a bump with my 240lb ass in the passenger seat. We got home, turned the car off, restarted it and it went through the power-up self test I guess and the fault cleared itself. The other day it started up again, no bump but still had the fat guy in the seat. I noticed that I only saw this issue referring to 2004 model xl7s. I've looked and haven't seen 2003s, or 2005s. The TSB for this issue ONLY refers to 2004 models and says that this is the updated part number 86605-53JA1. If you look at this site that has them in stock: [XXX] It says that part fits 2004-2006. I found the published date for the TSB somewhere online as 12/2004 so they apparently knew the problem early, made an update/change and moved on. Probably changing the design sometime mid-year 04? I don't like the idea of spending $1400 for a part. So, I checked [XXX] and found a nice passenger seat from a 2005 locally for about $75 in a boneyard. Does anyone have any advice why swapping in a 2005 seat (or just the base if the color is wrong, whatever) is a bad idea? Does anyone know if there has to be any special dealer magic/ calibration/ etc done if I put this in myself? I haven't yet had the time to pull the seat out of the car, flip it over and check things out. But I'm not super hopeful that I can fix whatever this sensor is since nobody else has posted anything in the last 13 years. Thanks for your interest. Vehicle year: 2009

When I bought this vehicle, I wasn't in the market for an SUV. However, the $5000 rebate caught my attention, and the dealership promised to provide free tires for life as long as I owned the car. Unfortunately, the dealership closed within the first two weeks of my ownership, and all promises were voided. At 55,000 miles, every light on the dashboard lit up, and I had to replace the timing chain and a wheel bearing. Although the dealership replaced a motor mount, the lights continued to come on. There is also a constant noise in the steering that is quite annoying, but unfortunately, the warranty doesn't cover it. Additionally, the front driver's side fender comes loose every time I drive the car. Unfortunately, American Suzuki is not willing to buy the car back.

Although my car has had some issues, I have been able to address them with confidence. I have had to true the rotors due to a shimmy in the front brakes, and I have also had to replace the transfer case and left axle seals. Additionally, I had to replace the HVAC head and the radio/CD unit, adjust the driver door, replace the horn, and replace the wiper control. I also had to replace the evaporator coil in the A/C due to mold coming out of the air vents. Finally, I had to replace the hydraulic control unit when the ESP and traction control stopped working. My latest issue is with the tire pressure monitoring system, where my RF reads as my RR and vice versa. Despite these challenges, I have been able to handle them with confidence and expertise.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my XL-7 car that I purchased three years ago. While I initially thought it was the perfect car, I found that after only 30,000 miles, I was ready to move on. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the car such as peeling paint, broken locks, and falling apart levers. Additionally, I found that the factory tires were not up to par. Overall, I didn't feel that it was a good value for me. Thanks for listening!

Reading through these reviews has opened my eyes to a few things. I tried opening my passenger side door and found myself standing outside of the vehicle holding the door handle in my hand. I see others have had the same thing happen and my locks can be tricky sometimes. Now I realize the locks must not be great to begin with if it's happening on other XL-7's. My last complaint is the fenders. I read others have had their fenders start to pull out of place, which has happened on both front fenders of my Suzuki. However, it has amazing space, including a 3rd row. My kids can control their heat/air from the back seat, and the vents are on the roof so they don't play with them; they stay in the position I put them in. I like the rear wiper blade; it's nice to have in a 3rd row to make it easier to see in snow/rain. There is a charger port in the backseat as well, which comes in handy for kids and their electronics. There is a lot of space when putting down the seats. The back hatch opens very nicely, but I had one problem with it slowly shutting itself; it only happened one time. I bought my Suzuki used and over 5 years old, but have read that even a few years newer have the same issues: locks, fenders, door handle, and sensors. So, it must be a common problem, and I wouldn't purchase this vehicle for any more than half of the price it's worth because of the problems. However, I do recommend buying it if it's at a low cost or reduced price because it seems to have no major issues and is a nice family vehicle when all the little things aren't going wrong. Thanks, everyone! Your reviews really helped me understand my vehicle, and that I'm not at fault for those things.

I was searching for a midsize SUV around 30k and test drove almost all the competitors. When I stumbled upon the XL7, I thought I'd give it a try, even though it wasn't high on my list. However, after considering all the features you get for the price, I believe it's the best value on the market. The ride is solid yet smooth, the pickup is great, and the style is nice both inside and out. Additionally, it has one of the best warranties in the market and requires very little maintenance. It even has a timing chain instead of a belt, which eliminates the periodic $500+ expense. Although it's a stretch to fit 7 passengers, 5 or 6 can fit comfortably.

  2. Jaron Schiller 2025-02-18

    Vehicle year: 2008

As a new driver attending college in upstate New York, I needed a reliable SUV with AWD to survive the harsh winter. After searching around, my family and I came across an '08 XL7 with about 130k miles on it going for $4,000. Initially, we were doubtful because of the high mileage, but my dad took it for a test drive and it turned out to be the best car on the lot. I finally drove it the next month after arriving home for winter break and it felt great even after a month of not being used. The ride was smooth and quieter than I expected from a V6. Maintenance isn't super expensive, which is perfect for my family's financial situation. Other than a faulty alarm system where my remotes won't work, even though the batteries and circuit boards inside are fine, it's perfect for a first car. If you see one, don't pass up the chance to test drive it - or dare I say - to buy it.

We purchased this car as an import from the States, and my wife was insistent on a vehicle with leather, 7 seats, and AWD. Since buying it over 2 years ago, the car has been completely problem-free. Although oil changes can be expensive due to the requirement for synthetic oil, they are few and far between. Despite lacking sex appeal and having a somewhat cheap interior, we have become very comfortable with the car and are extremely satisfied. I would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone.

We tested more than five SUVs with third row seats and found that the Suzuki XL-7 provides the best value. It has a long list of standard features, some of which are not even listed in their specifications. Many websites have the wrong information too. For example, the driver seat is 6-way power instead of 4-way power, and it has reading lights for the second row, not just the front row. Our local dealer is very nice, and they offer no-hassle pricing, which is far below invoice. Although I noticed a small paint problem inside the front window frame this morning, overall the vehicle seems to be very well made and I did not notice any cheap materials.
