Suzuki Vitara problems

suzuki logo

The Suzuki Vitara is a series of SUVs produced by Suzuki in five generations since 1988. The second and third generation were known as the Suzuki Grand Vitara, while the fourth generation eschewing the "Grand" prefix. In Japan and a number of other markets, all generations have used the name Suzuki Escudo (Japanese: スズキ・エスクード, Hepburn: Suzuki Esukūdo).

The choice of the name "Vitara" was inspired by the Latin word vita, as in English word vitality. "Escudo", the name primarily used in the Japanese Domestic Market, refers to the "escudo", the monetary unit of Portugal before adoption of the Euro. The original series was designed to fill the slot above the Suzuki Jimny. The first generation was known as Suzuki Sidekick in the United States. The North American version was produced as a joint venture between Suzuki and General Motors known as CAMI. It was also sold as the Santana 300 and 350 in Spain and in the Japanese market, it was also sold as the Mazda Proceed Levante.

The second generation was launched in 1998 under the "Grand Vitara" badge in most markets. It was accompanied by a still larger SUV known as the Suzuki XL-7 (known as Grand Escudo in Japan). The third generation was launched in 2005.

The fourth generation, released in 2015, reverted to the original name "Vitara" in most markets, but shifted from an off-road SUV towards a more road-oriented crossover style. It shares the platform and many components with the slightly larger SX4 S-Cross.

The model introduced in 2022 for the Indian market only reuses the "Grand Vitara" nameplate. It is slightly larger than the SX4 S-Cross.

Common Suzuki Vitara problems

The Suzuki Vitara, a popular compact SUV produced by the Japanese automaker, has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. These problems include DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) issues, clutch problems, air conditioning problems, timing chain problems, and engine problems.

One of the most common problems with the Vitara is related to its DPF. Due to the model's need for regular clean oil changes, the Vitara is prone to developing DPF problems. If the car is left idling after a test drive and emits dirty smoke from the exhaust, it may indicate a very dirty DPF that has become clogged with soot.

Clutch problems are another issue reported by Vitara owners. The car might brake unnecessarily in certain situations due to an error in the programming of the automatic emergency brake system. This affects cars made between 7 January 2015 and 6 May 2015, and contacting the local Suzuki dealer is recommended if you think your car is affected.

Air conditioning problems are also common in the Vitara. The condenser fan motor is highly susceptible to failure, making it difficult for cool air to blow through the system. This is a relatively simple issue to fix, and aircon problems are relatively inexpensive to repair.

Timing chain problems have also been reported by Vitara owners. When the tensioners in the timing chain fail, a rattling noise can be heard from the engine, indicating that the tensioners or the entire timing chain may need to be replaced.

Engine problems are another common issue with the Vitara. The EGR valve in the car can become clogged with carbon, leading to a loss in engine power and rough engine idling. If you notice these problems, getting a replacement EGR valve through one of the garages in the network is recommended.

These common problems with the Suzuki Vitara have resulted in Suzuki announcing recalls on affected Vitara models.

  • Date Complaint: 2008-03-20
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING TO WORK ON 3/18/08 AND AS I LEFT THE GAS STATION I HEARD THIS POP AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR CUT OFF. LATER AFTER HAVING IT TOWED TO A MECHANIC, I WAS TOLD THAT THE TIMING CHAIN BELT POPPED. I WAS ALSO NOTIFIED THAT THIS WAS A REGULAR OCCURRENCE WITH THE VEHICLE AND SUZUKI KNEW OF THIS, BUT HAD NO RECALL TO FIX OR CHANGE IT. I HAD NO IDEA OF THIS AND WAS TOLD WHEN BUYING THAT HAVING A CHAIN RATHER THAN A BELT WAS MUCH BETTER FOR YOUR CAR. NOT UNLESS IT POPS AND REPAIRS OF $2000 ARE NEEDED. I AM APPALLED THAT SUZUKI WOULD KNOW OF SUCH A PROBLEM AND IN NO WAY OF FIXING IT. I AM HOPING THAT SUZUKI COVERS THE COST OF THIS REPAIR AND REALIZES THAT THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT MOST OF THE CHARGE IS LABOR, BECAUSE IT WILL BE 11-13 HOURS TO GET TO THE CHAIN. I AM HOPING TO HAVE A REPRESENTATIVE LOOK AT THIS AND REALIZES THAT IF SOMEONE INVEST IN YOUR PRODUCT THAT MEANS THAT WE DON'T EXPECT IT TO NEVER BREAKDOWN, BUT IF IT DOES AND IT SOMETHING YOU KNEW WAS DEFECTIVE THEN YOU SHOULD HELP TO REPAIR IT. THANK YOU. *TR

  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH THE FRONT END OF THE SUZUKI GRAND VITARA XL7 (2001) THE STEERING WHEEL BEGAN TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY IN MY HANDS. I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A RIP IN THE RUBBER BOOT UNDER THE SUV ON THE DRIVERS SIDE (FRONT). I BELIEVE IT WAS CALLED A 1/2 SHAFT. I STUCK MY FINGER IN THE RIP OF THE RUBBER BOOT AND FELT A BUNCH OF PIECES ON METAL & LARGE BALL BEARINGS LAYING IN THERE. I HAD TO PARK THE SUV AND CALL SOMEONE TO PICK UP MYSELF AND MY CHILDREN SO THAT WE COULD PICK UP THE WIFE WHICH WAS BEING RELEASED FROM THE HOSPITAL. I RENTED A U-HAUL TRUCK WITH A TRAILER (185.00) AND DROVE IT BACK FROM MILWAUKEE. DECEMBER 24TH. I PLACED THE SUV ON JACK STANDS AND TOOK OFF THE TIRE AND THE CAP FOR THE DRIVE SHAFT ON THE OUTER PART BY THE BREAK DRUM, I FOUND A RETAINER CLIP ABOUT 1" IN DIAMETER. I REMOVED IT AND THE INNER PART OF THE 1/2 SHAFT FELL OFF FROM THE INNER PART OF THE BREAK DRUM. I FOUND OUT THAT THE ONLY THING THAT WAS HOLDING THE DRIVE SHAFT IN PLACE WAS THE RETAINING CLIP. WE DON'T HAVE ANY DEALERS IN THE AREA ANYMORE. I CALLED EVERY PARTS STORE IN THE AREA AND NO ONE COULD SUPPLY ME WITH A NEW PART. I CALLED A NUMBER OF JUNK YARDS TO FIND THE PART AND FOUND 1. THE USED PART COST ME 75.00 I REPLACED IT WITH EASE BUT KNOW THE SUV SITS IN THE DRIVEWAY BECAUSE IT PULLS TO THE LEFT. WE HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL WE CAN AFFORD TO HAVE THE SUV CHECKED OUT BY A SERVICE STATION FOR ALIGNMENT. IT MAY COST US MORE IF THERE IS MORE PROBLEMS THAT ARE NOT NOTICED BY THE EYE. P. S. THERE WAS NOT WARNING THAT THE SUV WAS HAVING ANY PROBLEMS BEFORE THIS HAPPENED. THANK YOU. *NM

IT IS DOCUMENTED THAT THE LEAKS OCCUR WITH SUZUKI GRAND VITARAS FROM 1999-2001. MY GRAND VITARA IS ONE OF THOSE CARS WITH THE LATENT DEFECT. I TOOK IT TO A AUTHORIZED SUZUKI MECHANIC AS REQUIRED, BUT THEY NEVER INFORMED ME THAT SUZUKI WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. AFTER FURTHER RESEARCH ON MY PART DID SUZUKI CORPORATION ACKNOWLEDGE THEY KNEW OF THE LATENT DEFECT. Vehicle year: 2003

I use this car for work in the city. It's comfortable, quiet, and well assembled. Although it's not particularly peppy (automatic), it has good visibility and great maneuverability. The climate controls work fine. However, the back seat leg room is a bit tight if you have two adults in the front seats. My biggest concern is that I can't seem to exceed 20 mpg city/23 mpg highway, no matter how gently I drive.

  2. Judah Ullrich 2024-09-11

    Vehicle year: 2002

My Suzuki was great for the first few years, but unfortunately, once my extended warranty ran out, I started experiencing some issues between 80k~91k. First, the auto-entry device stopped working, then the A/C, and some electrical problems started flaring up where my headlights and interior lights pulse at night. After that, an automated window went out, then the interior dome light shorted, and the final two kickers--it was not starting up, then finally it started dying on the road randomly and shaking and needing a time-out before I can restart it. The worst part is, either we have terrible mechanics in Texas or this is a hard car to work on, because no one can figure it out! It's really frustrating when a car that has served you well starts to have issues. I'm hoping to find a solution soon.

I had this vehicle for 19 months and unfortunately had to visit the service department 6 times during this period. The first time was due to an electrical problem that prevented the vehicle from shifting out of park. Although it took 3 visits to resolve the issue, I insisted that the Suzuki Tech Rep be contacted and the problem was eventually fixed. The other visits were for a front axle shaft, an engine seal, a defective windshield wiper switch, and engine tapping. The dealership suggested changing the oil and waiting for two changes with anything but a 'Fram' oil filter to address the tapping issue. They also suggested adjusting the valves, but at my expense, which I found concerning during the warranty period.

Very reliable and fun to drive. Also a great looker, always getting compliments. Plus, it has great gas mileage!

  2. Kirk Bernier 2024-11-26

    Vehicle year: 2001

Bought 6 years ago with only 62K miles on it. Recently replaced the clutch as a precaution, not because of a problem. The pedal was way too low, but now it's perfect. Great on gas, although the AC is marginal. The cam sensor can be an issue in wet weather, but it's not expensive if you do it yourself. It's a great small 4WD car with a 2.0 engine that has good power. It's small enough to tow easily behind an RV. I'm very happy with this car.

Very reliable and fun to drive. Also a great looker, always getting compliments. Plus, it has great gas mileage!

This is a great way to get this car for thousands cheaper. Just get the 4 cyl. I got it loaded for 16000 and it's very reliable. Most of all, it's big in a small way. I hope you enjoy it. We do. We have bought a few Suzuki products over the years and the value and reliability is what you come to expect from any Japanese car company without the heavy price tag!

I love my Vitara! I was set on getting a 4WD after last winter and being stuck in the house. I shopped around for the best value, with the features I wanted and the price I wanted to pay. I did over 3 months of looking before deciding on the Vitara. I absolutely adore it!
