The Daewoo Lacetti is a compact car manufactured and marketed globally by GM Korea since 2002. The first-generation Lacetti was available as a four-door sedan and five-door station wagon, styled by Pininfarina—and five-door hatchback styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro. The sedan and wagon were marketed as the Daewoo Nubira in some European markets and as the Suzuki Forenza in North America. The hatchback, was introduced in 2004 and marketed as Daewoo Lacetti5 in South Korea, Suzuki Reno in the United States. After the 2004 model year, it was marketed as Chevrolet Nubira and Lacetti in Europe, as the Chevrolet Optra in Canada, Latin America, Africa, Middle East, India, Japan and Southeast Asia, and as the Holden Viva in Australia and New Zealand.

In 2008, the second-generation Lacetti was launched as the Daewoo Lacetti Premiere, a badge-engineered version of the Chevrolet Cruze, co-developed by GM Daewoo, Holden, and General Motors. It was marketed under the Daewoo marque until the beginning of 2011, when the brand was discontinued, and was thereafter marketed under the Chevrolet and Holden brands.

The name Lacetti derives from the Latin "Lacertus", meaning "youthful".

Common Suzuki Reno problems

Based on the information provided in the sources, here are some common problems with Suzuki Reno cars based on complaints from owners:

  • Electrical Wiring Problems - Headlamp Failure:
    • Suzuki announced a recall due to an electrical wiring problem that may cause headlamp failure in certain model years of the Suzuki Forenza and Reno vehicles. This issue can result in decreased visibility, increasing the risk of accidents.
  • Transmission Range Sensor/Neutral Safety Switch Failure:
    • The transmission range sensor or neutral safety switch is another common problem reported by owners. Failure of this component can lead to issues like the vehicle going into limp mode, affecting its drivability.
  • Daytime Running Lamp Module Defect - Fire Hazard:
    • A defect in the daytime running lamp module has caused Suzuki Reno headlights to catch fire due to excessive heat buildup. This issue led to a lawsuit against Suzuki and a subsequent recall in May 2014 to address the problem.
  • Difficulty Finding Parts:
    • Owners have faced challenges in finding parts for the Suzuki Reno, possibly due to its status as an unpopular car. This can complicate repairs and maintenance, making it harder for owners to address mechanical issues.

These common problems highlight various issues that Suzuki Reno owners have encountered, ranging from critical safety concerns like headlamp failure and fire hazards to mechanical issues such as timing belt failures and difficulty in finding replacement parts. Addressing these issues promptly and ensuring regular maintenance can help mitigate the risks associated with owning a Suzuki Reno.

How many miles can a Suzuki car last?

From my experience either of these should easily be able to reach 200k miles with little maintenance beyond normal maintenance. There is only one number to consider. Cost per mile. The Suzuki will probably provide the lowest cost all things considered.

  • Summary: LUCKILY I WAS PARKED. TURNED ON MY CAR TO ROLL UP THE WINDOWS AND SUDDENLY THE DRIVERS SIDE SEAT EXPLODED,WITH WHAT LOOKED LIKE AN AIRBAG INSIDE THE SEAT. IT HIT MY ARM CAUSING A BRUISE. THE SEAT IS NOW TORN AND BUSTED.

  • VIN: KL5JJ66Z45K
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: DRIVERS SIDE AIRBAG LIGHT STAYS ON. NOT SURE AIRBAG WOULD INFLATE IF I WAS IN A ACCIDENT OR IF IT MIGHT INFLATE ON ITS OWN WHILE I AM DRIVING AND CAUSE A ACCIDENT. I ALSO CANNOT FIND A SUZUKI DEALERSHIP ANYMORE THAT COULD DO A RECALL REPAIR IF THERE IS ONE.
Suzuki Reno 2006
  • Date Of Incident: 2019-01-12
  • Date Complaint: 2019-01-13
  • VIN: KL5JD66ZX6K
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,SEAT BELTS,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: TRANSMISSION SLIPPAGE, FAILURE TO PROPERLY ENGAGE WHEELS/GEARS AND ACCELERATE THE VEHICLE. SOMETIMES RESULTS IN NO MOVEMENT; OR IT RESULTS IN MOVEMENT ONLY AT A SPECIFIC SPEED AND ONLY SHUTTING THE VEHICLE OFF OR KEEPING THE BRAKE APPLIED WILL STOP THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE APPEARS TO BE CREEPING FORWARD W/O ANY FUEL RELEASED. OTHER ISSUES: SEAT BELT LOCKING DOES NOT REMAIN LOCKED. REPEATEDLY. THE VEHICLE IS DANGEROUS. ALSO, THE WIPER FLUID FAILS TO MAKE CONTACT WITH THE WINDSHIELD. EXTREMELY POOR VISIBILITY. NO FLUID SPRAYING ONTO THE WINDSHIELDS. WASHER PUMP WORKS FINE, FLUID ENTERS THE LINES, IT JUST DOESN'T COME OUT OF THE SPOUTS AND THERE ARE NO LEAKS. BRAND NEW BATTERY... SEEMS ALMOST DEAD TODAY. HEATER... THE ICE COLD AIR OUTSIDE IS NOW CIRCULATING INSIDE, FULL BLAST 30 - 40 MINUTES, NO HEAT. HEADLAMP BULBS JUST CHANGED (AGAIN). SEVERAL RECALLS ASSOCIATED WITH THE HEADLAMPS AND COMPONENTS THAT FACILITATE "LIGHT" ILLUMINATION FROM THE HEAD LAMPS. HAD THE ALIGNMENT CHECKED TWICE WITH TIRE TYPE CHANGES RECENTLY, THE PULLING I FEEL CONSTANTLY ON THE ROAD... APPARENTLY NOT THE ALIGNMENT, BUT MORE INDICATIVE OF TRANSMISSION ISSUES. IF I CAN MANAGE TO GET THE CAR MOVING , TO START AND MOVE SAFELY, I WILL BE GETTING FLUID EXHCANGES FOR COOLANT SYSTEM AND TRANSMISSION, AND THEN DIGEST SOME FEEDBACK FROM THOSE PROCEDURES, AND I MIGHT BE NEEDING TO GET THOSE AREAS FLUSHED AS WELL. THE ROADWAY DANGERS WHILE DRIVING WITH A VEHICLE THAT DOES NOT RESPOND ACCORDING TO GENERAL EXPECTATIONS (PRESS THE ACCELERATOR AND ENJOY AN INCREASE IN MOVEMENT SPEED, FOR INSTANCE). EVERYTHING REPORTED ABOUT THIS VEHICLE NOW BLARES LOUDLY AS WARNINGS, FIRE HAZARDS, AND GENERAL HAZARDS ASSOCIATED WITH FAILURE TO CONTROL SPEED, EVEN SAFETY BELT RESTRAINTS FAILING TO RESTRAIN "ANYTHING". SOMEHOW IT SEEMS LIKE THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD BE COMPELLED TO RECALL THE CAR FOREVER.

  • Summary: A COUPLE DAYS AGO THE TIMING BELT BROKE ON MY GM-DAEWOO 2008 SUZUKI RENO. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS JUST UNDER 130,000 THOUSAND AND HAS BEEN VARY WELL MAINTAINED. THE BELT HAD BEEN REPLACED BEFORE WITH A GATES TIMING BELT AT ABOUT 100,000 I BELIEVE. THEREFORE MEANING THE BELT BROKE WITH JUST UNDER 30,000 THOUSAND MILES ON IT, WHICH IS WAY BEFORE THE MANUFACTURE OEM CHANGE INTERVAL IN THE SERVICE GUIDE. I UNDERSTAND THE ENGINE IS A GM FAMILY 2 SERIES ENGINE 2.0 D-TEC 4CYLNDER DOHC I THINK THE ENGINE CODENAME IN THESE ENGINES IS A U20SED/ L34. AS FOR THE BELT, IT JUST SNAPPED BESIDES FOR WHERE IT HAD SNAPPED AND BROKE ITS IN GOOD SHAPE, NO RIPS, TEARS ETC.. JUST WONDERING IF GM IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE, I NOT TRYING TO COMPLAIN BUT HONESTLY I FEEL THAT SOMETHING SERIOUSLY WRONG HAD HAPPENED TO MY CAR AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH I FOUND OUT ABOUT MANY OTHER PEOPLE HAVING THIS SAME ISSUE FORUM PAGES ONLINE, YOUTUBE VIDEOS, AND THINGS LIKE THAT. I HAD GONE THROUGH ALL THE RECALLS AND SERVICE BULLETINS AND THERE'S ABSOLUTELY NOTHING HAVING TO DO WITH WHAT HAD HAPPENED(THE BELT BROKE ON MY CAR AS WELL AS MANY OTHER RENO AND FORENZA VEHICLES. MAYBE THE TIMING SYSTEM WAS POORLY DESIGNED, MANUFACTURING DEFECT ? I'M NOT SURE, BUT I DO THNK THE TENSIONER MAY HAVE FAILED. I KNOW THIS IS AN INTERFERENCE ENGINE IT HAS ZERO COMPRESSION AND SO IT LIKELY HAS SOME BENT VALVES WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO HAVE THIS TAKEN CARE OF? ALSO THERE'S ONLY ONE SUZUKI SERVICE DEALER THAT'S STILL OPEN IN MY AREA, AS FOR THE RECALL IT HAS I AM PLANNING TO GET IT REPLACED, I CONTACTED THAT DEALER A WHILE BACK AND I AM PLANNING TO GET THAT FIXED VERY SOON. THE VIN FOR THE VEHICLE IS [XXX] I AM IN THE UNITED STATES, I LIVE ACROSS THE WATER FROM SEATTLE BUT IN CANADA I BELIEVE THESE WERE SOLD AS THE CHEVY OPTRA 5 THANKS [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

Latest negative Suzuki Reno car reviews

  1. Gilberto Rutherford 2025-03-28

    Vehicle year: 2008

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my '08 Reno. It's my trusty ride from home to work and back, and I have to say, as a first-time small car owner, I'm really impressed with it. I traded in my '98 Lumina (which had 168k miles on it) and some cash to drive it off the lot, and I haven't regretted it since. I know some reviews out there haven't been too kind, but as an owner, I think it's a great little car. Plus, with a 3 year/36k mile bumper to bumper warranty, a 100k powertrain warranty, and 24 hour roadside assistance, I feel really secure driving it. The only downside is that there aren't many dealerships around for service concerns, but I've only had one issue with the airbag light staying on all the time. Overall, I think it's a fantastic value for what you pay. I went with the 4-cylinder automatic, so I'm not expecting to keep up with a Vette or anything, but it gets me where I need to go and I'm happy with it!

    Vehicle year: 2008

I bought my car new, but unfortunately, I have always had issues with it. It seems to have gaps in acceleration, and despite taking it to the dealer, they said there was nothing wrong. The clutch also wore out very quickly, at around 35k miles, and the dealer said I had to replace it. However, I still haven't replaced it, and my car now has 142k miles. My major problem is that it has always had poor gas mileage and codes indicating that it is not running efficiently. I have replaced the throttle body and sensor, as well as the O2 sensors, plug wires, and other regular maintenance. Unfortunately, the

    Vehicle year: 2006

I bought this car used with only 4600 miles for about 6 grand at an auto auction. I've had it for almost a year now and so far, I haven't had any problems with it. The engine is easy to maintain. The only issue I've noticed is that the dashboard can sometimes glare onto the windshield, but other than that small detail, it's a great car for high school and college-age kids.

  4. Marcelo Leannon 2025-03-08

    Vehicle year: 2007

I purchased this Reno brand new, but unfortunately, I have had a lot of trouble with it since day two. On the second day, it left us stranded and wouldn't start. The dealer towed it back and said it was fixed, but unfortunately, we only got six miles from the dealer before it stopped again. The dealer had it for six days and returned it, saying it was all fixed. However, three days later, the same thing happened, and it wouldn't start. The dealer had it again and replaced more parts. It runs now, but unfortunately, it only gets 20 mpg in the city, which is not great. Yesterday, my wife started it, turned on the heater, and there was a loud noise. It turned out that there were some acorns packed in the heater. We called the dealer, but unfortunately, they said it was not their problem. I took it apart and found that there was no screen over the heater motor under the hood, and it was full of nuts. The transmission still doesn't shift right, and I am very disappointed with my purchase. I will not be buying another Suzuki.

    Vehicle year: 2008

I bought my Reno as a birthday present to myself and I absolutely love it! It's been running smoothly for the past six months and I couldn't be happier. The interior is spacious and the instrument panel is easy to use. The European styling is a nice touch and the trunk has plenty of space. The only thing I wish it had was a more powerful engine option, but I understand that it's an economy car. The suspension could also be a bit stiffer to reduce body roll, but overall it handles well. I know that sometimes you may need to make some avoidance maneuvers, but it's still a great car!

  2. Moises Hackett 2025-03-14

    Vehicle year: 2007

I appreciate you taking the time to read my review. I understand that negative reviews are more common than positive ones, but I wanted to share my positive experience with my second Reno. I owned my first Reno for 9 months and put 27,000 miles on it without any issues until it was unfortunately totaled in an accident with a semi truck. Thankfully, I walked away from the wreck. My current Reno has 76,000 miles and has also been trouble-free, with the exception of the poor air conditioning. However, I found that tinting the windows not only improves the car's appearance but also helps with the A/C. Overall, I am very satisfied with my Reno and wish they were still being made so I could purchase another one.

I drive 90 miles a day and I get from 420 miles to 380 miles on a full tank of gas, which is pretty decent. Although it needs cruise control, it's still a great deal for a car that gets me where I need to go.

I love it! The Reno is everything that I need and nothing that I don't. It's surprisingly spacious for such a small vehicle. I went with the base level, which has an affordable price tag that's hard to pass up.

I purchased my car in April of 07. When I first got it, it was completely stock. I opted for the blue metallic color. Since then, I have made several modifications including 18' wheels, intake, exhaust, chip, bigger injectors, and ported and polished the intake. I have not experienced any issues with this car, and as an avid street racer, I can keep up with evos and sti's. This car is awesome, even in its stock form. It may be slow, but for the price, it comes with a lot of standard features. I must say, the Ford Focus base model car has crank handles to roll up the windows, which is not ideal. It's unfortunate that Suzuki no longer produces the Reno or Forenza. I believe Suzuki made a mistake by recalling them.
