Suzuki Sidekick problems
The Suzuki Vitara is a series of SUVs produced by Suzuki in five generations since 1988. The second and third generation were known as the Suzuki Grand Vitara, while the fourth generation eschewing the "Grand" prefix. In Japan and a number of other markets, all generations have used the name Suzuki Escudo (Japanese: スズキ・エスクード, Hepburn: Suzuki Esukūdo).
The choice of the name "Vitara" was inspired by the Latin word vita, as in English word vitality. "Escudo", the name primarily used in the Japanese Domestic Market, refers to the "escudo", the monetary unit of Portugal before adoption of the Euro. The original series was designed to fill the slot above the Suzuki Jimny. The first generation was known as Suzuki Sidekick in the United States. The North American version was produced as a joint venture between Suzuki and General Motors known as CAMI. It was also sold as the Santana 300 and 350 in Spain and in the Japanese market, it was also sold as the Mazda Proceed Levante.
The second generation was launched in 1998 under the "Grand Vitara" badge in most markets. It was accompanied by a still larger SUV known as the Suzuki XL-7 (known as Grand Escudo in Japan). The third generation was launched in 2005.
The fourth generation, released in 2015, reverted to the original name "Vitara" in most markets, but shifted from an off-road SUV towards a more road-oriented crossover style. It shares the platform and many components with the slightly larger SX4 S-Cross.
The model introduced in 2022 for the Indian market only reuses the "Grand Vitara" nameplate. It is slightly larger than the SX4 S-Cross.

- Power steering problems: The 2006 Grand Vitara has been recalled due to weakened plastic parts in the pump belt, which can cause power steering loss. Additionally, the 2012-2013 SX4 has been recalled to fix a power steering pump that keeps seizing, particularly in cold weather conditions.
- Control module problems: Suzuki has recalled certain models due to control module problems inside the continuously variable transmission, which can cause electrical issues, increased transmission fluid temperatures, and potential solenoid failures.
- Gear shifter problems: The 2009-2013 Grand Vitara has been recalled due to broken gear shifters caused by repeated right-to-left and left-to-right movement of the shift lever.
- Safety concerns: The Suzuki Samurai, a model related to the Sidekick, has been criticized for its safety reputation, particularly due to its lightweight and short wheelbase, which led to an infamous rollover incident during a videotaped Consumer Reports test in the late 1980s.

This car is amazing! It's fun to drive, affordable, and has great 4x4 and off-road performance in mud and sand. Plus, it's a convertible! Replacement parts are also economic. And let's not forget, it's a hit with the ladies, especially on the beach!

I'm glad to hear that this is your first vehicle and that you like it a lot! The small size, 4x4 and maneuverability are great features. Although the fuel economy may not be the best, it's not terrible either, with maybe 30mpg at tops. It's understandable that a 16-year-old car that has been in many other hands may have some issues, such as the starter problem and corroded wiring for the fuel pump and some of the lights. But overall, it sounds like a pretty awesome car!

I have had my car since 1995, drove it from Texas - Colorado-Seattle, WA to Pennsylvania... with a U-haul trailer! (make sure you get a transmission cooler installed). Overall, the drive was always good, dependable, and comfortable for me....the driver. Passenger felt not enough leg/body room. Great for flea market scavenger hunts!.I have 125,000 miles on my car, and I got a great deal in the long run. Had my car for almost 8+ years.I now want to consider purchasing an Element from Honda

This car really surprised me! I was looking for a low-cost 4WD vehicle that I could use for primarily local driving with my two big dogs. But everything about it has continued to please me - from the ease of driving and handling, to the comfort and roominess of a small SUV, and the overall dependability. While it's a very basic car with standard 5-speed transmission, AM/FM/cassette, factory air, and manual windows and seats, it still ranks among the best!

I really enjoy driving this truck (that's what I call it)! Although it's a bit small for me and my two kids, it's perfect for cruising around with the roof off in the summer, and it's great to have 4WD in the winter. I take really good care of mine and now it's starting to get attention. I have a strong attachment to it, and it brings me a lot of joy.

Since none of my other vehicles have four wheel drive, I needed a cheap and reliable vehicle to drive in the winter. Despite being anemic in normal driving, it can't be beat for its low price and winter-driving ability.

This truck has been through a lot, but it's still running strong with 185,377 miles on it! I've taken good care of it, getting the transmission flushed and the oil changed regularly. It's not the fastest car on the road, but it's perfect for my daily 50-mile commute to college. Plus, it's great for driving in 4WD on snowy days and can handle icy hills with ease. And the best part? I got it for only $500 back in 2005! What a steal!
