The Suzuki Vitara is a series of SUVs produced by Suzuki in five generations since 1988. The second and third generation were known as the Suzuki Grand Vitara, while the fourth generation eschewing the "Grand" prefix. In Japan and a number of other markets, all generations have used the name Suzuki Escudo (Japanese: スズキ・エスクード, Hepburn: Suzuki Esukūdo).

The choice of the name "Vitara" was inspired by the Latin word vita, as in English word vitality. "Escudo", the name primarily used in the Japanese Domestic Market, refers to the "escudo", the monetary unit of Portugal before adoption of the Euro. The original series was designed to fill the slot above the Suzuki Jimny. The first generation was known as Suzuki Sidekick in the United States. The North American version was produced as a joint venture between Suzuki and General Motors known as CAMI. It was also sold as the Santana 300 and 350 in Spain and in the Japanese market, it was also sold as the Mazda Proceed Levante.

The second generation was launched in 1998 under the "Grand Vitara" badge in most markets. It was accompanied by a still larger SUV known as the Suzuki XL-7 (known as Grand Escudo in Japan). The third generation was launched in 2005.

The fourth generation, released in 2015, reverted to the original name "Vitara" in most markets, but shifted from an off-road SUV towards a more road-oriented crossover style. It shares the platform and many components with the slightly larger SX4 S-Cross.

The model introduced in 2022 for the Indian market only reuses the "Grand Vitara" nameplate. It is slightly larger than the SX4 S-Cross.

Common Suzuki Sidekick problems

Suzuki Sidekick owners have reported several common problems with their vehicles. These issues range from mechanical failures to electrical problems and even safety concerns.

  • CVT problems: Suzuki's continuously variable transmissions (CVT) have been reported to run hot, entering a fail-safe mode that slows the vehicle's speed and ability to accelerate. This issue has been attributed to inflated MPG numbers, with Suzuki stating that they weren't cheating on fuel economy tests but instead used the wrong test for six years, resulting in 2.1 million vehicles with inflated MPG claims.
  • Overheating daytime running lights: Suzuki headlights have been known to catch on fire due to a defect in the daytime running lamp module that allows excessive heat to accumulate. This defect has led to recalls for certain models.
  • Engine and transmission issues: Various models of Suzuki vehicles have experienced problems with their engines and transmissions, such as stretched timing chains, transmission jumping out of gear, engine failure, and premature failure of front passenger seat sensors.
  • Electrical problems: Electrical issues have been reported in Suzuki vehicles, including problems with interior components, airbags and seat belts, HVAC systems, and lights.
  • Power steering problems: The 2006 Grand Vitara has been recalled due to weakened plastic parts in the pump belt, which can cause power steering loss. Additionally, the 2012-2013 SX4 has been recalled to fix a power steering pump that keeps seizing, particularly in cold weather conditions.
  • Control module problems: Suzuki has recalled certain models due to control module problems inside the continuously variable transmission, which can cause electrical issues, increased transmission fluid temperatures, and potential solenoid failures.
  • Gear shifter problems: The 2009-2013 Grand Vitara has been recalled due to broken gear shifters caused by repeated right-to-left and left-to-right movement of the shift lever.
  • Safety concerns: The Suzuki Samurai, a model related to the Sidekick, has been criticized for its safety reputation, particularly due to its lightweight and short wheelbase, which led to an infamous rollover incident during a videotaped Consumer Reports test in the late 1980s.

These common problems do not necessarily represent every Suzuki Sidekick on the road, but they do highlight areas where some owners have experienced difficulties with their vehicles.

  • Date Complaint: 2004-01-26
  • VIN: JS3TE01V2P4
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: APPROXIMATELY. 14 MO. AFTER PURCHASE, SPEEDOMETER CABLE ASSEMBLY BEGAN MAKING NOISE, GOT WORSE (INTERMITTENTLY), AND CULMINATED 7 YRS. LATER IN A "FROZEN" SPEEDOMETER PLUS EXTREMELY LOUD SCREECHING (STUCK CABLE HEAD) AT SPEEDS OVER 20 MPH. REPLACEMENT OF COMPLETE SPEEDOMETER/ODOMETER ASSEMBLY BY INDEPENDENT AUTO REPAIR SHOP WAS COMPLICATED BY LACK OF AVAILABLE USED UNITS (WE LOOKED UNSUCCESSFULLY FOR OVER 8 MOS.). USED UNIT FINALLY FOUND BUT NOT CORRECTLY DIGITIZED (5 SETTINGS INSTEAD OF MANUFACTURED 6 SETTINGS). ONLY OPTION OFFERED BY DEALER WAS NEW UNIT AT COST OF $700. I PAID $300 TO INSTALL USED (AND INCORRECTLY DIGITIZED) REPLACEMENT. THIS PROBLEM WAS REPORTED TO DEALER WITHIN FIRST 14 MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP, AND WAS REPEATEDLY BROUGHT TO THEIR ATTENTION EVERY YEAR AS NOISE GREW WORSE. DEALER WAS NON-RESPONSIVE EVERY TIME. HOWEVER, I NOW UNDERSTAND FROM THREE DIFFERENT AUTO REPAIR SHOPS THAT THIS PROBLEM WAS VERY COMMON TO 1993 - 1995 VEHICLES OF MY MAKE AND MODEL, WHICH IS WHY NO CORRECT USED UNITS WERE AVAILABLE TO ME FOR REPLACEMENT. IT APPEARS THAT SUZUKI HAS EITHER NEVER ACKNOWLEDGED THIS DEFECT, OR NEVER NOTIFIED OWNERS OF A FIX. *LA

    Vehicle year: 1992

The Suzuki Sidekick may not be the most glamorous car, but it has never let me down on long trips to the mountains or on 4WD only trips in deep sand on Padre Island. In fact, I've even pulled F-350's out of the sand with it! While it may have poor resale value, it can be fixed up to look good. I added custom wheels, graphics, a custom radio, tinted windows, and oversized tires to make it a real looker. However, it's important to note that the 1991 model has no overdrive which is a real bummer on gas, and the little engine revs high (4,000 rpm) at 70 mph. Mine has had two new engines and it uses oil. Despite these drawbacks, it is a great fishing car. Crosswinds at highway speeds can be exhilarating, so I would not recommend this truck for a primary vehicle unless you're a good mechanic. I am now selling it for $1,800, so if you're interested, let me know!

I really enjoy driving this truck (that's what I call it)! Although it's a bit small for me and my two kids, it's perfect for cruising around with the roof off in the summer, and it's great to have 4WD in the winter. I take really good care of mine and now it's starting to get attention. I have a strong attachment to it, and it brings me a lot of joy.

  4. Ahmed Hudson 2024-10-26

A very fun vehicle to drive! It goes to many places that big SUVs can't. Even my 2-wheel drive model has gotten me in and out of some unbelievable places. The comments I receive about the vehicle when the top is down are an added plus.

    Vehicle year: 1996

I bought this sidekick with relatively high mileage (over 100k in 2000) for use at my second home in the NC mountains. Since none of my other vehicles have four wheel drive, I needed a cheap and reliable vehicle to drive in the winter. Despite being anemic in normal driving, it can't be beat for its low price and winter-driving ability.

I purchased my Sidekick new in 1995 and it's still going strong with only minor fixes and one major repair that was reasonably priced. The only issue is some rust on the driver's side doorstep due to Chicago's salty winters. It still has great pick up and take off. I love the windows so much that when I have to ride in another car, I laugh at the small windows and sideview mirrors. I'm so used to my Sidekick's windows that I don't care for others. The only thing I wish it had is a cup holder.

The Suzuki Sidekick brings back such fond memories. Although we parted ways with it in January of 2007 after owning it for 6 years, it still holds a special place in our hearts. It was the very first car my husband and I (fiancé back then) ever bought together, and it was also the first car I ever bought in my life, being only 19 at the time. I remember the day we bought it so clearly, I was so excited! It was a candy apple red color with black trim and it was in mint condition, having only had one previous owner and very low mileage. Our Sidekick saw a lot of miles over the years and, with regular routine maintenance, it never let us down. It took us safely through many New England snow storms, took us on countless 3-hour each way weekend road trips to visit my husband's mother, and various other trips over the 6 years we owned it. It had close to 200,000 miles on it by the time finally we traded it in back in 2007. Although we did have to replace the exhaust on it a few times, which we've never had to do on any other vehicle we've ever owned, it was the only real issue we ever had with it. My husband thought that it had to do with the location of the exhaust on the vehicle and the rough winters we tend to have. The Sidekick's gas mileage was fantastic (about 20 mpg in the city) and it was great in the snow (we live in New England, so we get a lot of that). My husband and I have nothing but fond memories of this vehicle. We had some fun times with it. In fact, my husband says, even to this day, that if he ever found a Sidekick for sale anywhere, he would buy it in a heartbeat, just for fun and the nostalgia factor. However, I doubt that will ever happen as they're nearly impossible to find nowadays, seeing as they have been out of production for 18 years. I believe the last year the Sidekick was produced was 1998, so it's a very rare find. These days, we are driving a 2010 Jeep Commander Limited and a 2012 Ford Escape XLT. The Escape reminds me a tiny bit of the Sidekick as it's similar in size, but the Sidekick will always have a special place in my heart, being the first vehicle I ever bought as a very young adult, and it was the first big purchase my husband and I ever made together. Those were some good times.

I bought my Suzuki as my first vehicle and later sold it to a friend. Although the previous owner had treated it roughly, I took good care of it and my friend did too. Despite having over 180,000 miles on it, it still runs and moves, although it is not currently inspected. The transmission makes some noise, the body is held together by only a few of the original mounts, the engine rattles, the clutch is not the best, and the frame is not in great condition. However, considering the beating it has taken, it is still impressive that it can go anywhere you point it. This Sidekick is truly a remarkable vehicle that deserves to be preserved, but for now, we will continue to drive it until it finally gives up.

I bought my sidekick some time ago now, and I use it a lot. It has 104k miles on it and has behaved like a champ. I haven't had any problems with it, only regular maintenance such as oil changes, fluid top-ups, and brake checks. The fuel economy is great, and I love the big windows and stylish looks. It's not a very fast car, but hey, that's not what you're paying for, and it wasn't designed for high performance.

I bought my 1994 Suzuki Sidekick brand new and have driven it for 126,000 miles. Surprisingly, I just changed the original tires, and the spare has never been touched! This truck has been a workhorse for over 5 years, hauling office equipment and spare parts in the back (with the back seat folded down). It has the advantage of being able to go where other SUVs would bail out due to its size. I have only experienced normal wear and tear, did the 60,000 mile overhaul, and nothing has gone wrong since! I really like it, but I will have to donate it to a charitable organization. The engine is incredibly reliable. If new Suzuki models use the same basic construction, I would highly recommend them without any reservations.
