Suzuki Swift problems

The Suzuki Swift (Japanese: スズキ・スイフト, Suzuki Suifuto) is a supermini car (B-segment) produced by Suzuki. The vehicle is classified as a B-segment marque in the European single market, a segment referred to as a supermini in the British Isles. Prior to this, the "Swift" nameplate had been applied to the rebadged Suzuki Cultus in numerous export markets since 1985 and for the Japanese-market Suzuki Ignis since 2000. The Swift became its own model in 2004. Currently, the Swift is positioned between Ignis and Baleno in Suzuki's global hatchback lineup.

Predecessors

International (1985–2003)

The Suzuki Swift nameplate began in 1985 as an export name for the Suzuki Cultus, a supermini (or subcompact) manufactured and marketed worldwide since 1983 across three generations and four body configurations—three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, five-door hatchback and two-door convertible—and using the Suzuki G engine family. The third generation was only sold in North America; the second generation remained in production for other markets across the world.

The Swift was marketed in the Japanese street domestic market (JDM) as the Cultus and elsewhere as the Suzuki SA310, Suzuki Swift, Suzuki Forsa, Chevrolet Swift, Chevrolet Sprint and Sprint Metro, Geo and Chevrolet Metro, Pontiac Firefly, Maruti 1000, Holden Barina and Subaru Justy. Versions of the second generation Cultus were also produced until 2007 in India and the car remained in production until 2016 in Pakistan and China.

Common Suzuki Swift problems

The Suzuki Swift is known for its reliability, but like any car, it can have certain common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the Suzuki Swift, based on complaints from owners:

  • Electric window issues: Another common problem with the Suzuki Swift is a rattling sound coming from the electric window, which could be caused by a small bolt that has come loose. While it is a simple fix, it may require some technical skill to sort out.
  • Clutch slipping: Some Swift owners have reported clutch slipping, which can manifest as the clutch juddering while driving, difficulty changing gears, or a burning smell when revving the engine. This problem is a well-known issue with the Swift and may require a clutch replacement, which can be quite expensive.
  • Gearbox issues: Some Swift owners have reported stiffness in the gearbox mechanism, which could indicate a future need for a replacement gearbox. It is essential to pay special attention to the feel of the shift while test driving a potential Suzuki Swift purchase.
  • Handbrake malfunction: There is a known issue with the calibration on the brake that can cause the handbrake to malfunction. However, this issue can be relatively cost-effectively recalibrated if the vehicle is too much of a bargain to turn down.
  • Front bush failure: Some Swift owners have reported high-pitched noises originating in the front of the car, which could indicate that the front bushes are on their way out. Testing the suspension by pushing down on the bonnet of the car can confirm this suspicion. Replacing both bushes may be necessary if the car takes more than 1.5 bounces to return to position.
  • Battery software issue: Some Swift models built between 7 January and 1 November 2017 may have a software issue that prevents the main battery from being charged while driving, leading to it going flat. An update is required to fix this issue.
  • Integrated starter generator belt problem: A problem has been found with the belt snapping on the integrated starter generator that forms part of the mild-hybrid system. This issue only affects a small number of examples made between 3 February and 13 March 2017, but it is essential to check whether the work has already been carried out by speaking with a Suzuki dealer.
  • Side curtain airbags and seat belt pretensioners: The side curtain airbags and seat belt pretensioners fitted to Swifts manufactured between 3 February 2017 and 13 February 2019 could deploy if one of the rear doors is slammed shut. A software update is required to prevent this from happening.
  • Parking damage and scuffs: Many Suzuki Swifts are used as city cars, so it is essential to check for parking damage, dings, and scuffs to bumpers and alloy wheels. The windscreen and headlamps should also be examined for damage as they are susceptible to stone damage and expensive to replace.
  • Interior trim issues: The interior trim of the Suzuki Swift can be prone to scratches and damage, especially in higher-spec models with diamond-cut alloy wheels that are more costly to repair if kerbed. It is essential to check for any damage to the interior trim and plastics during a test drive.

In summary, the Suzuki Swift is a reliable car, but like any vehicle, it can have certain common problems. These issues include dashboard rattling, electric window issues, clutch slipping, gearbox problems, handbrake malfunction, front bush failure, battery software issues, integrated starter generator belt problems, side curtain airbags and seat belt pretensioners, parking damage and scuffs, and interior trim issues. It is essential to be aware of these problems and check for them during a test drive to ensure that the vehicle is in good condition.

Suzuki Swift

Is the Suzuki Swift a reliable car?

Suzuki as a brand ranks well for reliability, with the Swift itself also gaining an impressive reputation. It sits high up on popular reliability rankings, with its drivers praising the economical nature of the car, and it's also solidly built.

What is the most common problem with Suzuki?

Suzuki's faulty timing chain has emerged as a significant concern, causing frustration and potential engine damage for many owners. Drivers have reported issues such as engine misfires, unusual noises from the engine compartment, and even complete engine failure.

What are the disadvantages of Suzuki Swift?

Disadvantages of owning a Swift ZXI:

  • No Rear View Camera.
  • No Diamond Cut Alloy Wheels.
  • No Auto Dimming IRVM (Not present in top model ZXI+ too)
  • Less interior space (all variants)
  • Only 2 Front Airbags.
  • And last of all but should be the top one - Disastrous Global NCAP Safety Rating of 1 star each for Adult and Child Safety.

Why not buy a Suzuki Swift?

The one thing I was not able to duplicate is poor handling and steering at higher speeds as one reviewer on here mentioned. The only thing I can put that down to is poor tyres or their car was in bad need of repair ! Perhaps some earlier year models had an issue which I don't know about but has clearly been sorted now.

  • VIN: 2S2AB21H716
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: MARCH '02, TOOK VEHICLE IN FOR ENGINE STALLING PROBLEM AT LOW SPEEDS AND PROBLEM WAS FIXED. TWO MONTHS LATER (5/18/02 AT 12,349 MILES ON ENGINE), TOOK MY VEHICLE IN FOR THE SAME STALLING PROBLEM AT HIGHER SPEEDS UP TO 65MPH. LEFT THE VEHICLE WITH THE SAME AUTHORIZED SUZUKI SERVICE DEALER (CORPORATE MOTORS OF HAYWARD) FOR A FULL WEEK. UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE STALLING PROBLEM. SEVERAL WEEKS LATER AFTER MANY STALLS AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, I THOUGHT IT WAS A PERFECT TIME FOR CORPORATE MOTORS TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. LEFT THE VEHICLE FOR 2 FULL WEEKS, BUT STILL COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE STALLING PROBLEM. WROTE TO SUZUKI AND LEFT 2 VOICE MESSAGES AND RECEIVED A PHONE RESPONSE SAYING THAT IF THE SERVICE DEALER CAN'T DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM THEN THERE'S NO PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE. FRUSTRATED, I TOLD THE SUZUKI REP LORAIN THAT I WOULD CONTACT A LEMON LAWYER ON THE ISSUE. CALLED UP A LEMON LAWYER (RANDY) WHO IS NOW ASSISTING ME WITH THE CASE. TWO WEEKS LATER, ANOTHER SUZUKI REP (RICH REGDON) CALLED AND WANTED ME TO TAKE MY VEHICLE AGAIN FOR TEST DRIVE TO SEE IF CORPORATE MOTORS COULD DUPLICATE THE STALLING PROBLEM. RANDY ADVISED ME TO TAKE MY VEHICLE TO GIVE SUZUKI A CHANCE TO FIX IT AND I DID FOR 10 DAYS (8/2/02 TO 8/12/02). RESULT: UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE STALLING PROBLEM. ON 8/12/02, ONLY 20 MINUTES AFTER I PICKED UP MY VEHICLE AND FILLED IT UP WITH GAS, THE ENGINE STALLED. NO STALLING FOR THE LAST 3 DAYS NOW. THE PROBLEM IS VERY INTERMITENT. I CALLED SUZUKI AGAIN FOR 5 TIMES AND LEFT 2 VOICE MESSAGES. I AM STILL WAITING FOR SUZUKI TO CALL ME BACK. QUESTIONS: WHAT SHOULD I DO NEXT? WHAT IF MY WARRANTY RUNS OUT BEFORE THE PROBLEM CAN BE DUPLICATED? IT SEEMS LIKE IT IS MY WORDS AGAINST THEM -- NO PROOF. THANK YOU.*AK

    Vehicle year: 1994

I bought this new GT off the showroom floor and loved it! Although I did have some transmission problems quite a bit and the dealer didn't seem to fix it too well. Unfortunately, the A/C never worked past a summer for 3 years. However, it always got me where I wanted to go. The GT had great handling and just enough power to make things fun. It's a shame they don't make it anymore.

  2. Branson Greenholt 2024-10-21

    Vehicle year: 1998

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this car. I bought it as a second owner with 130,000 miles on it and it has been a very reliable car. It has never stranded me, which is great! Unfortunately, these cars tend to rust out near the A-arm and under the doors midway. I now have 225,000 miles on the motor and have replaced the usual stuff like brakes, bearings, and cv-shafts. I have a 5-speed and I'm not sure an automatic would be able to get out of its way! I've noticed a slight decrease in speed, from 44 to 40 mph, over the last 15,000 miles, but she's still going strong. I'll keep driving her until her frame goes, which will be soon. I changed the oil regularly and used slick 50. I didn't race the car, I drove her for economy. Thanks for listening!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car - a red 2000 model that I bought back in April. I find that it costs me an average of $25 to fill up once a week, which is pretty reasonable considering I stay in town. The highway mileage is excellent too! I did have to replace the battery and tires recently, and unfortunately, my catalytic converter is going out. But overall, I'm still really happy with my purchase!

  4. Jamison Haag 2024-08-25

    Vehicle year: 2001

I bought my car back in 2007 when gas prices were skyrocketing and I needed to get rid of my 16 mpg pickup. It was a great decision! My car gets an impressive 38 mpg and is perfect for when I don't need to haul anything large. As someone who spends a lot of time on the road (I drove 18,695 miles last year!), I appreciate that my annual maintenance costs are below $200. Performing maintenance on this car is a breeze, too. It's easy to drive and maneuvers well in tight parking lots. Despite its small size, the car has no problem accelerating on freeway on-ramps. I would highly recommend this car to anyone looking to save money on commuting and around town costs. The only downside is that some drivers feel the need to pass me because of its size...

    Vehicle year: 2000

I bought this car as a backup vehicle in 2004 and was pleasantly surprised by how well it performs! It has great gas mileage and is fun to drive. Even after 12 years and 38k miles, it still drives like new! I was also impressed by how well it handles in the snow - it drives just like a 4WD vehicle because all the weight is in the front. The only downsides are that Suzuki made these cars with 'power-assisted' steering rather than power steering (so you have to put your shoulder into it), and when you open the driver's window, you break the vacuum seal and will feel air coming in through the floor speaker grill. However, I feel safe letting my teen use this as her first car next year.

  2. Lewis Cummerata 2024-11-21

    Vehicle year: 2001

I just love this little car...

  3. Carol Lakin 2024-11-16

    Vehicle year: 1998

Congratulations on considering the 1997 Suzuki as your next car! I have owned this car for a long time and it has been a great investment. With over 700,000 kilometers on my previous car, I decided to purchase this brand new Suzuki and it has not disappointed. I always use synthetic oil in the engine and have only had to replace the water pump and radiator. This car has been very reliable and has held up well in the Canadian climate. If you are looking for a basic, easy to maintain, and dependable car, then the 1997 Suzuki is definitely worth considering.

  4. Brycen Hansen 2024-11-10

    Vehicle year: 2000

This car is fantastic! It runs really well in the snow and has amazing gas mileage. I would definitely buy another one, although they can be hard to find.

  5. Marvin Walsh 2024-11-03

This car may not be very popular in the US, but it is a great vehicle for everyday driving. It is fuel efficient, reliable, dependable, and easy to park and drive.
