Suzuki Grand vitara xl-7 problems
The Suzuki XL-7 (styled as XL7 for the second generation) is a mid-size SUV sold by Suzuki from 1998 to 2009, over two generations. Slotted above the Grand Vitara in Suzuki's lineup, the XL-7 offered three-row seating. XL-7 stands for "Xtra Large 7-seater".
First generation (XL-7; 1998)
The first-generation XL-7 was a Suzuki design, had a body-on-frame construction, and was essentially a stretched Grand Vitara. The North American version had a Suzuki-designed 2.5- or 2.7-liter V6 engine, on a rear-wheel drive-based platform with optional four-wheel drive. Beginning in 2003, European versions were also available with a 2.0-liter Peugeot turbodiesel engine producing 109 PS (80 kW).
A unique trait in the US market in this segment was that the XL-7 was available with a five-speed manual transmission, in both five- and seven-seat variants.
When introduced, the XL-7 was the least expensive SUV available with three-row seating in North America. It was awarded the Consumers Digest "Best Buy" award. However, sales slowed as the vehicle aged relative to the competition.
In Thailand, the Grand Vitara XL-7 was Imported by Siam International Corporation Co. Ltd. on 2002.
In Indonesia, the Grand Escudo XL-7 was launched on July 19, 2003, at the 12th Gaikindo Auto Expo.

Common Suzuki Grand vitara xl-7 problems
The Suzuki Grand Vitara XL7 is a popular vehicle, but like any car, it can have its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners of this car:
- Engine Management Warning Light: If the engine management warning light appears on the dashboard, it is usually caused by a faulty oxygen sensor. If this part is faulty, you will probably notice a slight increase in fuel consumption. You will need to replace the oxygen sensor to fix the problem.
- Timing Chain Problem: If you can hear a rattling noise coming from the engine, the most likely cause is a problem with the timing chain. The main cause of this problem is poor servicing, which results in the tensioners sticking. The first thing to try is flushing the engine and changing the oil. Most of the time this will fix the problem. If it does not stop the problem, then you will need to replace the timing chain.
- Rear Door Handle: The rear door handles are prone to breaking on the XL7. If you find that the rear door handles are not working and are broken, then you will need to replace them.
- Airbag Lifting: One of the biggest issues that you might run into in owning the Suzuki XL7 is its braking system. As standard, the Japanese MPV is installed with ventilated disc brakes up front, and leading/trailing drum brakes in the rear wheels. Just like most cars, the front brakes do most of the braking as it is more efficient this way. If you considered getting a 7-seater in the first place, the chances are you have a big family. This can affect the brakes over time as you will haul heavy loads most of the time.
- Timing Chain Tensioner Failure: The timing chain tensioner may fail, causing the engine to run poorly or not at all.
- Valve Lifter Noise: After a cold start, you may hear a noise from the valve lifters. This is a common issue with the Suzuki XL-7 and may require replacement of the lifters or other engine components.
These are just some of the most common problems that Suzuki Grand Vitara XL7 owners have reported. It's important to note that not all vehicles will experience these issues, and some may have different problems altogether. If you're experiencing any of these issues or have concerns about your vehicle, it's always best to consult with a certified mechanic or your local dealership for further assistance.
What is the common problem with Suzuki Grand Vitara?
The Grand-Vitara has a known issue with its water pumps, which are prone to seizing up. Those pumps run off the timing belt, so seizure leads to a timing belt slip which is causing the engine to stall. In most cases, you will need to order both a new water pump and a new timing belt from BreakerYard.
Is the Suzuki XL-7 a reliable car?
XL7 owners have made 72 complaints over 9 model years. It ranks dead last in reliability out of 12 eligible Suzuki models. Our reliability rank is based on our PainRank™ system. A higher number means you can expect more significant problems.
How many miles can a Suzuki XL-7 last?
That includes one accident (which did far more damage to the Dodge Stratus than it did to the XL7... ...and the XL7 went strong for about 200,000 miles afterwards... This latest one I bought is also a 2002; with 129,000 miles on it, so I'm expecting to have many years before it reaches the same point as the original.
Why did they stop making Suzuki XL-7?
The automaker pulled the plug on production in May 2009. Suzuki's major failing across the board in the U.S. was that its products weren't distinctive enough to give the brand the traction it needed to establish a sustainable presence. Part of the problem was a sharp decline in support from GM.

- Summary: RECALL 03V51200 AFFECTED PART OF THE 2004 XL7 BUT NOT THOSE PRODUCED AFTER 6/13/2003. THE LATTER VEHICLES HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE ACCELERATER CABLE STICKING. ON MARCH 18, 2017 MY WIFE'S CABLE GOT STUCK AND HER VEHICLE ALMOST REAR ENDED A DIESEL TRUCK ON HIGHWAY 99 SOUTH IN SACRAMENTO, CA. IF SHE HADN'T PUT THE VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL SHE WOULDN'T HAVE STOPPED SO I LOOKED RECALL NOTICES AND FOUND THE ABOVE STATED RECALL. JUST TO FIND OUT THAT HER VEHICLE SUFFERED FROM THE SAME AFFLICTION AS THE VEHICLES THAT WERE RECALLED BUT WASNT INCLUDED. THIS IS SO DANGEROUS AND I FEEL ALL THE VEHICLES FROM 2004 SHOULD BE FIXED

- Date Of Incident: 2005-10-22
- Date Complaint: 2017-03-02
- Crash: 1
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: THE BRAKE AND GAS PEDAL ARE AT THE PROPER ELEVATION TO PRESS THEM SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH ONE FOOT. BECAUSE IT IS REAR WHEEL DRIVE AND ANTI-LOCK BRAKES, THE CAR SPEEDS UP WHEN THAT HAPPENS. THIS IS A TYPICAL ENGINEERING FLAW THAT HAPPENS WITH MANY VEHICLES ("HE THOUGHT HE WAS STEPPING ON THE BRAKE WHEN HE RAN INTO THE CROWD OF PEOPLE..."). THE FRONT ANTI-LOCK BRAKES RELEASE WHEN THE REAR WHEELS WANT TO KEEP TURNING. WITH REGULAR BRAKES, ONE CAN STILL OVERCOME THE FORCE OF THE ENGINE AND STOP A CAR. I RAN INTO A HOUSE TRAILER BECAUSE OF THE CAR ACCELERATED WHEN I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE! THE PROBLEM CAN BE ENGINEERED OUT. I HAVE NOT YET FOUND A WAY TO DISSEMINATE THIS INFORMATION TO ANY NATIONAL SAFETY COMMITTEE. IT IS PROBABLY A COMMON PROBLEM FOR PEOPLE WHO USE ONE FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND THE OTHER FOOT ON THE GAS.

- Date Of Incident: 2014-04-01
- Date Complaint: 2016-04-05
- VIN: JS3TY92V844
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: ONE DAY, I STARTED MY CAR, THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON, AND THE CLOCK/TEMP WAS FLASHING, IT HASN'T GONE AWAY. I AM UNABLE TO FIX THE CLOCK, AND WHEN I WENT TO THE MECHANIC TO FIX THE AIRBAG PROBLEM, HE CALLED OUR LOCAL SUZUKI DEALERSHIP AND HE WAS TOLD THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN KNOWN FOR YEARS, AND WOULD COST ME OVER $3500 JUST FOR THE PARTS. I'VE SEEN OTHER SITES WHERE PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. ON ONE FORUM I SAW THAT SOME SUZUKI DEALERSHIPS WERE OFFERING TO RESET THE SENSOR MODULE FOR FREE, BUT I WASN'T OFFERED THAT HERE (HAWAII). I SPENT MOST OF MY DAY TRYING TO SEE IF THERE WERE RECALLS, BUT COULD NOT FIND ANY. AT THIS POINT, BEING THAT THE CAR IS ALREADY 12 YEARS OLD, HAVING TO FIX THIS PROBLEM WILL COST MORE THAN THE CAR IS WORTH. I AM UNABLE TO GET A SAFETY CHECK, AND AM UNABLE TO DRIVE IT ANYWHERE NOW. I FEEL THAT SUZUKI SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COST SEEING THAT THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH OTHER OWNERS.
