Suzuki Grand vitara 2006 problems
The Suzuki Vitara is a series of SUVs produced by Suzuki in five generations since 1988. The second and third generation were known as the Suzuki Grand Vitara, while the fourth generation eschewing the "Grand" prefix. In Japan and a number of other markets, all generations have used the name Suzuki Escudo (Japanese: スズキ・エスクード, Hepburn: Suzuki Esukūdo).
The choice of the name "Vitara" was inspired by the Latin word vita, as in English word vitality. "Escudo", the name primarily used in the Japanese Domestic Market, refers to the "escudo", the monetary unit of Portugal before adoption of the Euro. The original series was designed to fill the slot above the Suzuki Jimny. The first generation was known as Suzuki Sidekick in the United States. The North American version was produced as a joint venture between Suzuki and General Motors known as CAMI. It was also sold as the Santana 300 and 350 in Spain and in the Japanese market, it was also sold as the Mazda Proceed Levante.
The second generation was launched in 1998 under the "Grand Vitara" badge in most markets. It was accompanied by a still larger SUV known as the Suzuki XL-7 (known as Grand Escudo in Japan). The third generation was launched in 2005.
The fourth generation, released in 2015, reverted to the original name "Vitara" in most markets, but shifted from an off-road SUV towards a more road-oriented crossover style. It shares the platform and many components with the slightly larger SX4 S-Cross.
The model introduced in 2022 for the Indian market only reuses the "Grand Vitara" nameplate. It is slightly larger than the SX4 S-Cross.

Common Suzuki Grand vitara 2006 problems
The Suzuki Grand Vitara 2006 is known for several common problems that have been reported by its owners. These issues range from engine and transmission problems to air conditioning and suspension concerns.
- Timing Chain: The timing chain in the Suzuki Grand Vitara 2006 tends to run for about 100,000-110,000 km, after which it requires replacement.
- Air Conditioning: The air conditioning system in the Suzuki Grand Vitara 2006 may experience issues due to the susceptibility of the condenser fan motor to failure. This can lead to a lack of cool air blowing through the system, but the problem is relatively inexpensive to repair.
- Transmission: The manual transmission in the Grand Vitara 2006 has a common problem with the first gear, which may not engage when the car is warm or becomes tightly stuck. This issue can be caused by a dying clutch, bad oil in the transmission, or a problem with the gearbox itself .
- Suspension: The Suzuki Grand Vitara 2006's suspension has several weaknesses, including silent blocks of the front levers, which may require replacement. The front stabilizer bushings are also known to have a short lifespan, typically lasting around 10,000 km .
- DPF Problems: The diesel particulate filter (DPF) in the Suzuki Grand Vitara 2006 is prone to issues due to the model's need for regular clean oil changes.
- EGR Valve: The EGR valve in the Suzuki Grand Vitara 2006 can become clogged with carbon, leading to a loss in engine power and rough engine idling.
- Water Pump: Diesel versions of the Suzuki Grand Vitara 2006 are known to suffer from seized water pumps, which can cause catastrophic damage to the engine if the timing belt slips.
- Fuel System: The Suzuki Grand Vitara 2006 has experienced issues with the fuel system, with engine and fuel system problems being among the most prevalent.
- Recalls: There have been seven recalls affecting this generation Grand Vitara, including issues with the intercooler outlet pipe insulation, fuel/air ratio, and diesel particulate filter.
- Brakes: The Suzuki Grand Vitara 2006 has had issues with brake discs becoming scored from stones getting trapped in the brakes, particularly in vehicles that have been used extensively off-road.
What is the problem with the 2006 Suzuki Vitara?
(Suzuki) is recalling certain 2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara vehicles. The power steering pump belt tension adjuster pulley has an outer portion that is made of plastic. Repeated heat stress can cause the plastic material to deteriorate, causing pieces of the pulley to break off.
What is the common problem with Suzuki Grand Vitara?
The Grand-Vitara has a known issue with its water pumps, which are prone to seizing up. Those pumps run off the timing belt, so seizure leads to a timing belt slip which is causing the engine to stall. In most cases, you will need to order both a new water pump and a new timing belt from BreakerYard.

- VIN: JS3TE943964
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: I bought this car used one year ago and have had to change the low beam lights twice and now they are out again. At night I drive with the high beams on and they are so weak no one can tell. Last month the engine started surging making the car try to take off wether in neutral, park or drive. I have to hold the brake very strongly to keep the car from taking off. This is extremely dangerous for obvious reasons and someone is going to get seriously hurt or killed because Suzuki will not acknowledge or fix this problem. This will be my last Suzuki product ever. I can't afford to get another vehicle right now so I'm having to drive this nightmare daily.

THE VEHICLE WAS SHIPPED BACK TO USA IN 2009 AND EVER SINCE I HAVE RECEIVED THREE SAFETY RECALL NOTIFICATIONS TO HAVE DONE BY LOCAL SUZUKI DEALER. WE CONTACTED THE LOCAL SUZUKI DEALERS SEVERAL TIMES AND THE VIN DOES NOT APPEAR IN THEIR SYSTEM AT ALL. I BEEN TOLD THEY WILL NOT SERVICE MY VEHICLE BEING THAT IT WAS SHIP FROM PUERTO RICO AND THE ONLY PLACE THEY WOULD FIX THE RECALL WOULD BE THERE. I HAVE CONTACTED CORPORATE SUZUKI MULTIPLE TIMES AND BEEN TOLD THEY CAN'T DO MUCH TO TRY TO NEGOTIATE WITH THE DEALER AGAIN WHICH HAS REFUSED TO DO THE SERVICE. I HAVE BEEN MANY HOURS EXPLAINING MY SITUATION TO DIFFERENT INDIVIDUALS FROM DEALER AND SUZUKI AND NEVER COME TO A SOLUTION AFTER SEVERAL MONTHS. I'M TOLD THAT VEHICLES SHIPPED TO PUERTO RICO (US TERRITORY) AND BACK TO US ARE NOT COVERED UNDER THESE SAFETY RECALLS DESPITE I AM RECEIVING THE NOTIFICATION TO MY OHIO ADDRESS. ITS BEEN SEVERAL MONTHS WE BEEN TRYING TO SOLVE THIS ISSUE AND ALWAYS GET THE RUN AROUND. ONE OF THE RECALL IS RELATED TO AIR BAGS AND DIFFERENTIAL TRAIN LOCKING DUE TO FAULTY SEAL. THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN BY MY DAUGHTER FOR SCHOOL AND WE'VE NOW HAVE RESTRICTED HER FROM DRIVING THE VEHICLE CONCERNED FOR THESE ISSUES. WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY SUPPORT OR ASSISTANCE YOU MAY PROVIDE TO SOLVING THIS ISSUE.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-06-01
- VIN: J53TD947664
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I WAS ACCELERATING ONTO A SUPER HIGHWAY WHEN MY VEHICLE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE ENGINE STARTED RUNNING ROUGH. WHEN I RETURNED HOME I PUT MY ENGINE SCAN ON THE COMPUTER AND IT STATED EGR VALVE....I BELIEVE IT MAY HAVE BEEN A P0401 CODE. I ORDERED A NEW EGR VALVE AND REPLACED IT ALONG WITH NUMEROUS GASKETS AND CLEANED EVERYTHING ACCORDING TO MY SERVICE MANUAL......WHICH BY THE WAY, IS THE $100 SHOP SERVICE MANUAL THE DEALERSHIP USES! IT CORRECTED THE PROBLEM FOR ABOUT 6 MONTHS TIME PERIOD AND THEN BEGAN ALL OVER AGAIN. I USE PREMIUM SHELL GASOLINE IN THE VEHICLE AND DO PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE ON A REGULAR BASIS AS DESCRIBED IN THE SERVICE MANUAL. I HAVE DONE SIGNIFICANT RESEARCH ONLINE AND HAVE FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS ISSUE HOWEVER, SUZUKI HAS NOT RESPONDED WITH A SOLUTION. I SEE FORD AND SOME OTHERS HAD THIS SIMILAR COMPLAINT AND REDESIGNED THEIR EGR VALVES TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE. ALSO, I HAVE RECEIVED SEVERAL SUZUKI RECALLS HOWEVER, THERE ARE NO SUZUKI SERVICE CENTERS IN AMERICA NOW TO GET THESES ISSUES RESOLVED. THE LATEST RECALL WAS SENT TO ME FROM SUZUKI STATING THE ISSUE AND THAT THEY WOULD NOTIFY WHERE TO GET IT RESOLVED......SOON?? NEVER HEARD ANOTHER WORD! THIS IS LIKE 2-3 RECALLS NOW.....AIR BAGS, POWER STEERING PULLEY, AND SEVERAL OTHERS. I DID HAVE THE ABS BRAKE SENSORS AND THE TRANSMISSION LOCK ISSUES RESOLVED AT THE DEALERSHIP SHORTLY AFTER MY PURCHASE OF THE NEW VEHICLE HOWEVER, THE REST HAVE BEEN UNRESOLVED! THIS EGR VALVE IS EITHER A DEFECTIVE ENGINEERING ISSUE OR RELATED TO ETHANOL ADDED TO THE GAS WHICH IS THE BIGGEST NIGHTMARE EVER FOR ANY ENGINE AND SHOULD BE STOPPED IMMEDIATELY AS ANY MECHANIC WILL TELL YOU!! IT WAS A MONEY MAKER FOR THE ULTRA RICH AND NOTHING TO DO WITH RESOLVING EMISSIONS OR ANYTHING ELSE AS A DEFECTIVE EGR WILL SPEW MORE POLLUTION THAN NOT HAVING IT AT ALL! UPDATED 09/21/15*LJ

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-04-19
- Crash: 1
- VIN: JS3TD944564
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: MY WIFE AND I JUST LEFT MY MOTHER'S CONDOMINIUM PREMISES, I TURNED RIGHT ON GENEVA AVENUE IN SAN FRANCISCO. AS I STARTED TO ACCELERATE AT 23 MILES PER HOUR, THE CAR TOOK ON A LIFE OF ITS OWN! THE CAR TOOK OFF, THE ENGINE REVVED UP, BY IT SELF AND SPED UP, EVEN ME MY RIGHT FOOT STEPPING AS HARD AS I COULD ON THE BRAKES! I STEERED THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, BUT I NEEDED TO HIT THE BUMPER OF A PARKED CAR IN ORDER TO STOP. IN MY OPINION, MY WIFE AND I WERE SUBJECTED BY THIS CAR INTO A LIFE THREATENING SITUATION. I LEFT A NOTE AND MY PHONE NUMBER ON THE WINDSHIELD OF THE CAR I HIT, APOLOGIZED, AND ASKED THE DRIVER TO CALL ME AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I THOUGHT THE FRIGHTFUL EXPERIENCE WAS OVER! AFTER I LEFT MY NOTE FOR THE DRIVER OF THE PARKED CAR I HIT, WE DECIDED TO PROCEED. AFTER HALF A BLOCK, THE ENGINE POWERED UP BY ITSELF, AGAIN, AND WAS LAUNCHING FORWARD. I MANAGED, WITH ALL THE FORCE I COULD MUSTER, TO STEP ON THE BRAKES AND STOP ON A RED ZONE. WE DECIDED TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO MY HOMETOWN, 44 MILES AWAY. THE 2006 SUZUKI GRAND VITARA SHOULD BE EXAMINED THOROUGHLY BY THE MANUFACTURER IN MY OPINION, CORRECT THIS HUGE PROBLEM BEFORE IT KILLS. BETTER YET, IT SHOULD BE BOUGHT BACK BY THE MANUFACTURER. OTHER PEOPLE MIGHT BE DRIVING AT 45 MILES, NOT 23, BY THE SIDE OF THE CLIFF. I ADVISED SUZUKI USA ABOUT THIS. THE MATTER IS PENDING. I WAS TOLD NONCHALANTLY BY A RICHARD TRAVIS THAT THEY WILL HAVE THE VEHICLE EXAMINED. THEY WILL TRY TO 'DUPLICATE THE HARROWING EXPERIENCE. I DID NOT FEEL ANY COMPASSION AT ALL FROM SUZUKI.

NOW WHEN THE OTHER SIDE OF THE VEHICLES HEAD LIGHT WENT OUT MY WIFE HAD SOMEONE LOSE TO REPLACE IT THEY HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. THEY BROKE THE CLIP ALSO. IT SHOULDN'T BE SUCH A HASSLE TO SIMPLY CHANGE YOUR BULBS ON A VEHICLE. ON ANOTHER NOTE, TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE HEADLAMPS YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE WHOLE FRONT GRILL AND THE FRONT LOWER BUMPER. TOTALLY CRAZY. WHO EVER ENGINEERED THIS IDEA SURELY DIDN'T THINK IT THROUGH. PLEASE HAVE THIS VEHICLE RECALLED FOR THIS SPECIFIC ISSUE. I KNOW I'M NOT THE ONLY WHO HAS THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR

- Manufacturer: Suzuki Motor of America, Inc.
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. (Suzuki) is recalling certain 2010-2013 Kizashi and 2006-2013 Grand Vitara vehicles. The front passenger leather seat may shrink due to high humidity and high temperature. As a result, the occupant classification system (OCS) sensor mat may not accurately detect if an adult or child is occupying the seat.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating airbag deployment, an incorrect classification may result in the passenger frontal air bag deploying even if there is a child in the front passenger seat, increasing their risk of injury.
- Remedy: Suzuki will notify owners, and dealers will replace the seat bottom cushion, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters were mailed on May 3, 2019. All second letters notifying owners of the remedy were mailed by April 10, 2020. Owners may contact Suzuki customer service at 1-800-934-0934. Suzuki's numbers for this recall are 4011 and 4012.

My Grand Vitara has been an incredibly reliable car with 18,000 miles on it and not a single problem. Recently, while making a sharp right turn at around 10 mph, a loud noise came from underneath the truck. Despite my wife admitting that she had heard the noise before at a particular intersection, I am confident that this issue is minor and will not affect the overall reliability of the car. Although the noise is quite loud and noticeable, I am not concerned as I know that the dealership will be able to address it. Additionally, while the cruise control could use some refinement, I am confident that this car will continue to perform well for me.
-
We test drove the CR-V, RAV4, and Forester before making our purchase. Out of all the small SUVs we tried, the Grand Vitara had the roomiest interior and was the most comfortable for both my wife and I, despite our height differences. It was also impressively quiet on the road and had a powerful 6-cylinder engine. Additionally, it had all the features we were looking for, including air bags, front and side, electronic transfer case, and ESP with traction control. My wife even credits the ESP with saving her from a potential accident when she had to swerve to avoid a car that pulled out in front of her. Overall, we are extremely satisfied with the fit and finish of this vehicle and plan to keep it for a long time!
-
During our time with the car, we covered over 20000 miles and experienced very few issues. The only mechanical problem we encountered was a squeak in the steering column, which was promptly fixed. The gas mileage was decent, averaging around 21.5 mpg on the highway. The car handled and rode exceptionally well, outperforming many others in its class. However, we did notice that the hood cast a shadow on low beam and the cruise control shifted too soon on inclines, despite the engine having plenty of power. Overall, we enjoyed our time with the car, but ultimately traded it in for an XL7 due to our need for three rows of seats.
-
The Grand Vitara has great handling and pickup speed, and is roomy. It's really fun to drive with all the comforts of a luxury vehicle. However, it can be a bit of a gas hog.

I purchased my SUV in May of 2006 (V6). Although the mileage was rough in the first year, I'm now getting 20+ miles around town and 25+ miles from the N.E. corner of PA to Philly, which is a 120-mile run mostly on the turnpike. It's an absolute pleasure to run the pike with this smooth-riding and running SUV. As someone who's pretty picky, having purchased 15 new cars and trucks over the years (not counting the used ones), I rate this vehicle as very good. It's also easier for me to get in with my bad back than a Subaru, which is too low.

In July 2007, I upgraded to a 2006 Grand Vitara with an auto 4x4 feature, replacing my 2004 Ford Explorer. While the vehicle handles well on normal roads, it struggles on icy or slick surfaces, swerving left to right. Despite having it checked out by the dealer, I was told that there was nothing wrong and that I must have been driving too fast for the conditions. However, I find it hard to believe as everyone else was passing me. Although the 4x4 feature helps when I stomp on it, it starts slipping again when I let off. As a result, I don't feel safe in this car and will be trading it off soon. I have decided to go back to Ford, where I feel more confident in their vehicles' safety and reliability.

I've had my Grand Vitara for six months now and I must say, it's been a bit of a disappointment. It's a total gas guzzler, only averaging 12 miles per gallon in the city and 17 mpg on highways. The high revving engine and confusing climate control system are the culprits here. It seems like the A/C always turns on, which can be frustrating.

The car has had some issues with the tires, rims, CD player, battery, headlights, rear shock, seats, dummy lights, brakes, interior light, and windows. However, these issues have been addressed and resolved with confidence and expertise. The car is now in excellent condition and ready for safe and comfortable driving.

I purchased my GV when it had only 17 miles on it. Unfortunately, I had to replace two tires by the time it reached 13,000 miles, and the other two tires at 23,000 miles. Additionally, I had to deal with two recall issues, one of which occurred before the recall notice was issued. The brakes started to feel mushy, and at 38,000 miles, two more tires were wearing out. The gas mileage was not great, and the headlights made driving at night difficult. However, I have since traded it in for a Toyota that I absolutely love! Looking back, buying the Suzuki was not the best decision I ever made, but I learned from it.

I purchased this car with 93k miles to have a reliable daily driver that could handle the snow. The AWD/4wd with low range is excellent in the snow and with snow tires, it can handle anything. However, the car has now reached 113k miles and being an older car, I expected to perform some maintenance and fix a few things. Unfortunately, since I bought the car, I have had to deal with several issues such as valve stem seals, valve cover gasket, shocks, power steering, gas leak, engine sensors, AC temp sensor, AC blower motor, and duct that directs airflow in the cabin. The low beams also burn out every month or two and sometimes melt the socket. Despite these issues, I believe this car was a decent car when new. However, as an older used car, it requires more attention and maintenance.
