Nissan Versa problems

Nissan Versa is an automobile nameplate used by the Japanese manufacturer Nissan in the Americas for the following models:
According to a Nissan press release in 2008, "versa" is short for "versatile space" meant to imply the spaciousness of the interior and configurable cargo arrangements. The Versa is one of the few remaining subcompact cars left on sale in the North American market, with most automakers dropping small cars from their lineups to focus on crossovers and SUVs.

Common Nissan Versa problems
The Nissan Versa is a popular compact car known for its affordability and spacious interior. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported.
One of the most common issues with the Nissan Versa is transmission problems, particularly in the 2012-2017 models.
Steering problems have also been reported by Nissan Versa owners, particularly in the 2016 model.
Suspension system problems are another common issue with the Nissan Versa, especially in the 2009 model.
Windshield wiper issues have also been reported, with a broken wiper motor being the most common cause. This can affect the car's visibility, making it unsafe to drive in rainy conditions.
In addition to these issues, the Nissan Versa has also been reported to have problems with the fuel injection system, catalytic converter, and airbag system. While the Nissan Versa is generally considered a reliable car, these common problems are worth considering when purchasing a used model.
Is the Nissan Versa a reliable car?
The Nissan Versa Reliability Rating is 4.0 out of 5.0, which ranks it 9th out of 21 for subcompact cars. The average annual repair cost is $456 which means it has excellent ownership costs. The severity of repairs is low while frequency of those issues is average, so major issues are uncommon for the Versa.
Why did Nissan discontinue the Versa?
Many models have disappeared, making way for SUVs and crossovers of all styles and forms. Nissan is no exception to the rule. The Versa sedan was phased out at the end of 2014 in Canada due to low sales figures (but still continued to exist in the U.S.), while the Versa Note hatchback followed suit after 2019.
How many miles will a Nissan Versa last?
While it's impossible to accurately estimate your Versa's total mileage, you can get a rough idea based on available information from reputable sources and owner accounts. Having said that, the Nissan Versa can last up to 200,000 miles before you'll encounter major issues.
What years did the Nissan Versa have transmission problems?
Nissan Versa Years With the Least Reliable Transmissions
The 2012 isn't far behind the 2008 version, suffering from severe transmission faults. The transmission system in this car was so bad that Nissan had to recall the version. The 2007 and 2009 selections also have very severe issues with their transmission.

- Summary: I just got my car yesterday. I was leaving work and my car had no power. I couldn't get up to speed for a very long time, it was as if it was in limp mode. I got home and scanned it and got a P2615 code. upon doing research I have found several others having this problem. It is very scary and dangerous to drive this way. Also, cleared the code and it runs fine until the next time. This problem needs to be addressed before someone gets hurt or worse.

Nissan Versa 2024
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-23
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-10
- VIN: 3N1CN8BV1RL
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Brand new Versa delivered 8/16/2024. Started to hear chirping, whirring noise from clutch pedal when halfway depressed (right before bite) and also when releasing pedal, halfway up, when engine is warm. First started at 1200 miles and continues presently. Taken to Nissan dealership on 10/8/2024 and was told their mechanics don’t have the time to drive around and make engine warm to reproduce clutch symptoms. Major concern as this is brand new from the Nissan factory already exhibiting major clutch symptoms indicative of faulty release bearing/release fork, causing potentially catastrophic transmission damage a few hundred or thousand miles from now, when it could have otherwise been prevented promptly, under factory warranty. Vehicle is available for inspection by NHTSA. No one injured.

- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: New Versa delivered 8/16/2024. Rear seat belt alarm will NOT chime when 1,2, or 3 passenger(s) are seated in the rear without fastening their seatbelts. However when passenger(s) DO buckle in properly, the alarm falsely and unnecessarily chimes for 45+ seconds.
Nissan Versa 2024
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-15
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-10
- VIN: 3N1CN8BV1RL
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: This Versa was purchased brand new with 6 miles on it, delivered 8/16/2024. Strong odor of fuel inside cabin after city driving about 90 minutes in 100+ degree heat with a/c (on either recirculating or fresh air) in [XXX] . So overwhelming, causing burning eyes, throat, and nose forcing me to shut off engine. Predictably occurs when outside heat is over 100 deg F. This occurred within only 30 days of purchase at about 1300 miles, and so far occurred 4 times thus far total since purchase date to present. It took me a few weeks to fully understand the root cause until inspection under hood revealed fuel leakage around fuel injectors where inserted in intake manifold, and possibly fuel rail. Brought car in to Nissan dealer that sold me it and they said they smelled no odor (most likely because engine was cold and they only test drove briefly) and found no leaks. No due diligence or urgency on their part, and it was after their dismissive response that I encouraged sent the service advisor photos of the leaky fuel taken from days prior, in order to be taken seriously and have it fixed with some urgency under warranty, as this leaky fuel on hot manifold can combust or leak into cylinders. Nissan Versa 2009

Nissan Versa 2022
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-11
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-25
- VIN: 3N1CN8EV4NL
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The issue that I am experiencing has been intermittent, however it seems to be a safety concern that Nissan is not taking seriously. As I am driving at any speed with no cars around me the car collision icon will come on and flash as well as the front portion of the car in the advanced driver assistant system will flash yellow. This has happened on more than one occasion, but will always go away eventually. I believe that my safety is at risk because what if I was driving with my cruise control on and this occurred, would it slam on my brakes causing an accident? It has not been duplicated by the dealership that I have taken my car to however I have been able to record it several times when it occurred. There are no other warning lights that come up when this occurs, however I have codes that show that some of my radar sensors are not functioning properly. Nissan has not done anything about this issue and has dismissed it as a common problem with the vehicle when it clearly is a safety issue.
Nissan Versa 2021
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-29
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-20
- VIN: 3N1CN8EV5ML
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: The brakes fight and lock from time to time. The steering will get a tug like a car is in front of me. The engine has a weird tug before pulling of and switching gears.when I pull off while turning the car feels like it completely losses power!?
Nissan Versa 2023
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-18
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-19
- VIN: 3N1CN8BV0PL
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: I stalled my vehicle (5-speed manual) in a drive through. I quickly restarted the vehicle and proceeded through. When I pulled out onto the main road my car had no power. There was nowhere safe to pull over so I had to continue. My car would not accelerate above 20mph and even that was extremely hard. I had to downshift to 1st gear to proceed up the hill. Finally, I was able to pull off and restart my car. This fixed the issue and I was able to drive home. I’ve not stalled the car before so I had never experienced this issue. I’ve read about it, and having it happen is terrifying. Had the car who was driving behind me been going faster, I likely would have been hit when I pulled out of the drive through. This is extremely dangerous.

- Summary: Vehicle loses power, ability to accelerate and is unable reach a speed above 35-40 mph regardless of gear (manual transmission) or downshifting, requiring you to pull off road; has occurred four times now. After turning vehicle off and restarting, operation is normal. Nissan dealer checked and pulled up a code regarding coded keys and reprogrammed keys; could not replicate the power/acceleration issue. Problem still re-occurred. There are no warnings, warning lights or symptoms until you accelerate.

Update#5 (2020). The Air Conditioner stopped working a few months back. The repairman said it was low on Freon but couldn't find the leak. However, it's been working fine since then. If all we have to do is put a can of Freon in once in a while, I can live with that. I had to finally put front brakes on, but at close to 100k miles, that's not bad. The rear brakes are still good, but they squeak while backing up. I haven't changed the plugs yet, but it still runs well and the gas mileage is about the same. This car isn't driven much, maybe 100 miles a week, but as a backup car, it's good. This will probably be my last update. The car has exceeded my expectations. It's too bad the CVT's in the new Nissans won't hold up. I wouldn't buy a Nissan with a CVT. This 2009 model is one of the last 4spd automatics, and it's been a good one. Take care. Update #4 (2019). The car is still going strong with no breakdowns, only maintenance. The HVAC works well, and it's still on the original brakes. It's easy on tires and has no rust. The gas mileage is decent, and so far, I'm pleased. Update #3 (2018). The car is still holding up pretty well with approximately 85k miles now. There have been no maintenance costs other than fluid changes. I've been critical of this car in my previous comments, but so far, I'm very pleased. The HVAC works well, and it's nimble with adequate power. It's easy on tires and brakes, and the gas mileage is consistent (30). I'm still skeptical of its long-term reliability, but we'll see. Update#2. The car is driven daily, and things have been good so far. There have been no mechanical breakdowns or problems. I rotate the tires and change the oil, and that's about it. Update#1: The car has been reliable so far with 75k miles now. It has adequate power and decent fuel economy. The Versa is not a freeway car; it's for around town and commuting. Yes, it can be driven 75 mph, but it's uncomfortable. Even the loaded SL feels cheap, but that's what it is....a cheap car. Once you get over that and appreciate its real quality (inexpensive transportation), you will feel good about driving it. Would I buy this car over a Toyota Camry or Honda Civic? Probably not, but you can buy one cheap. If this car lasts us another 5 years and/or 75k more miles, I won't regret buying it. The car is now 7 years old with 65k miles. I purchased it from an elderly family member who bought it new, and while the Versa's reliability is a mixed bag from what I've read, I'm happy with my purchase. I'm more into Toyota quality, but this car came at a great price and so far, I haven't had any major issues. I had to change out one strut, but I'm still on the original set of brakes, and it seems to be easy on tires. It averages about 30 MPG and drives out pretty well. It's not a speed demon, but it's adequate. My impression is that this is a decent economy car that does everything well. Time will tell if it lasts. Pros include great visibility, decent MPG, and fold-down rear seats. Cons include electronic steering, jittery handling on the highway, and engine noise when pushed.

I purchased this car for my daughter, whose old car was on its last legs. I am thrilled with our Versa S 5-speed manual. Attention tall drivers: I am 6'6I'm glad to hear that you haven't had any mechanical problems with your car and that you still enjoy driving it! It's great to know that the finish still looks great since you take such good care of it. Overall, it sounds like you're very happy with your car!

Great little car! It has lots of interior and trunk room, and gets 39 plus MPG around town. Although it does get blown around a little when it's windy or passing big trucks on the highway.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed reading your review of the 2021 Versa. It sounds like you made a great choice in purchasing the base model for towing behind your motorhome. I love that this car has features that are typically optional on other cars, and it's great to hear that you're enjoying the handling and versatility of the car. Plus, with the stick shift, it sounds like it's a lot of fun to drive! Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and I hope you have a wonderful day!

I recently purchased a fuel-efficient entry-level car and I'm really happy with my choice. Although I used to be a fan of Toyotas, this car outperforms the 1.5L Yaris in my opinion. The motor is impressive for its size and I was even able to drive it through 14 inches of snow without any issues. On long trips, I'm getting over 40MPG on the highway and my average MPG is around 34, which is great. It's also cost-effective, as it only costs around 7.5 cents per mile for gas, making it one of my most economical vehicles (excluding my Harley, of course). I did notice a slight drop in mileage after the dealership put in synthetic oil at 8000 miles, but overall, it's a great little car.

'15 Versa may not be the best option for you. It has some issues with the materials used and manufacturing quality. The suspension is not very comfortable and you may feel the bumps on the road. In cold weather, there might be some noise from the dashboard and windshield. However, it does offer a lot of space in the cabin and trunk. It is important to note that it may become unstable over 65mph unless you have enough weight in the car. It is always recommended to check other vehicles in this class before making a decision. Thank you for considering this information.

**UPDATE** Edmunds asked me to update my review. It still stands that Nissan created a great small car, but unfortunately, the transmission is terrible. From my experience, it seems that they are still using the same brand gearbox, so I will leave my original review as is. I would advise avoiding the Versa, Sentra, Altima, Juke, Rogue, and Murano models, as they all have the same failing CVT transmission. In my case, the CVT started slipping at 40,000 miles. I remember being on the highway with a speed limit of 65, and we couldn't get the car above 50 before the gas pedal became useless. The RPM would jump from 1500 to 3000, back to 1500, and we lost acceleration, and could only coast at a slower speed. If you pushed harder, it would redline the RPM gauge, jerk, then drop back to 1500. I hope this information helps you make an informed decision when considering purchasing a Nissan vehicle.

I recently traded in my 2001 Ford Explorer for a 2012 Nissan Versa SV Sedan with the CVT transmission. At first, I was really impressed with the car - it looked great, had good mileage, and drove well during the test drive. However, after a day of driving it, I noticed some issues with acceleration and strange noises coming from under the hood. I took it to the dealership, but they dismissed my concerns and told me it was just because I wasn't used to the CVT transmission. Over time, the issues got worse and worse, with the car vibrating and making loud noises when idle. Eventually, the car stalled in the middle of an intersection, causing a dangerous situation. Despite my attempts to get the dealership to address the issues, they were dismissive and unhelpful. It was a frustrating and scary experience, but thankfully no one was hurt. The next day, I went straight to the dealership and informed them that something had to be done. I requested a trade-in, but unfortunately, they were unable to accommodate my request. Instead, they suggested fixing the transmission, which I agreed to. During the three weeks it took to replace my transmission with a new one (@ 74,000 miles), I was given a rental car. On Thursday afternoon (3/23/17), I was informed that my car was ready to be picked up. However, as soon as I drove out of the dealership, I noticed that the vibration was still present, along with the humming noise. The brakes also seemed to be acting up, with a jerking motion, and the acceleration was better but not perfect. I immediately called my mother and informed her of the situation, and we decided to go back to the dealership the next day (Friday... 3/24/17). When we arrived, we were upset and angry, but unfortunately, everyone seemed to be getting annoyed with us. We were told that the transmission had been fixed and that nothing was wrong with my car. I overheard a salesman say that we were just looking to trade because I wanted a new car. They suggested that a technician drive the car with me, but unfortunately, no one would listen to me and drive the car longer than 2 minutes around the block. You had to drive it for about ten minutes to start to hear the humming sound and feel the vibrations. I became very upset and left because we were just getting the run around AGAIN! Later that day, the hum noise became worse and worse, and at about 11:30 pm that Friday night, I was driving home from clinicals when I heard an awful clanking noise coming from under the car, which I could feel in the floorboard. I thought it would be okay until I got home because I was so close. I only had one stop sign to stop at before getting to my house. As I was driving away from the stop sign, I noticed that my car was making a loud hum and clank noise. To my surprise, the car started veering to the right and no matter how much I turned the steering wheel to the left, it wouldn't go left. I immediately tried to brake, but the car acted like it didn't want to brake. It jerked and continued to go to the right. Eventually, I had to stop by hitting a speed limit sign! I was so scared that I called my mother and asked her to come down the road. We called the sheriff department and wrecker service to come out there. I didn't turn the car off when I got out just because I didn't think about it. As my mother and I were standing out there waiting for them to arrive, we started to hear this loud fan type noise coming from under the hood and saw a slight glimpse of smoke. We immediately turned the car off! Now, my car is at the body shop and we are going to the dealership first thing when they open on Monday! I would advise against buying a Versa, as I know other people who have had similar issues with their cars.

When I asked their mechanic who did the work on it how long a clutch should last, he said a hydraulic clutch on a vehicle like this should easily last 150,000 miles, but his name wasn't on the dealership sign. When I appealed to the Nissan Regional manager, he simply said

Hi there! I understand that buying a new car can be a daunting task, but I'm glad you settled on the Versa! From what you've said, it sounds like you made a great choice. The leg room and fuel economy are both fantastic features. I'm happy to hear that you find the car spacious and comfortable for four adults. It's great that you're getting an average of 29.35 MPG, even with mostly city driving. And don't worry about driving crazy to get to work on time, we've all been there! Overall, it sounds like you're really enjoying your Versa. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and I look forward to hearing more from you in another 6 months!
