nissan logo

Nissan Versa is an automobile nameplate used by the Japanese manufacturer Nissan in the Americas for the following models:

According to a Nissan press release in 2008, "versa" is short for "versatile space" meant to imply the spaciousness of the interior and configurable cargo arrangements. The Versa is one of the few remaining subcompact cars left on sale in the North American market, with most automakers dropping small cars from their lineups to focus on crossovers and SUVs.

Common 2015 Nissan Versa problems

The 2015 Nissan Versa is known for several common problems, primarily related to the transmission, anti-lock brake system, and suspension.

  • Anti-lock brake system issues: Some owners have reported issues with the anti-lock brake system, where the brakes feel jerky, leading to them locking up. This problem is caused by an issue with the ABS system and can cost around $2,300 to replace if it fails.
  • Loose suspension: A loose suspension, leading to an unstable driving experience, has been reported in some Versa models around 20,000 miles. The shocks and struts both become loose while driving on rough roads, causing the Versa to feel like it’s wandering or floating down the road. Changing out the suspension components costs around $1,800.
  • Transmission issues: Although most transmission issues are reported in older models (2012-2017), it is still essential to be aware of potential transmission problems in newer models. These issues include trouble shifting, jerking while driving, odd tachometer gauge behavior, whistling noises, and randomly stopping. The reported symptoms can cost upwards of $4,000 to fix or replace.
  • Steering problems: Nissan Versa owners have reported that their vehicle tends to drift into other lanes and sometimes locks up without warning, especially when driving on the freeway at average speeds. This issue is not due to alignment problems but rather a steering problem that continues even after repairs are made, particularly in the 2016 model.
  • Suspension system problems: Based on reports, nearly 30% of Nissan Versa problems can be linked to the suspension system, especially in the 2009 model. The most common issues are due to broken or failed coil springs just after passing 70,000 miles. When addressed in a timely manner, repairs hover around $600. However, if ignored, the issues can cause tire blowouts, leading to higher costs and potential danger.
  • Windshield wiper issues: If the windshield wipers aren't working, it is likely that you have a broken wiper motor. This problem is common in the Nissan Versa, and the wiper motor may need replacement.

These common problems with the 2015 Nissan Versa can lead to higher repair costs and a shorter lifespan compared to other compact cars. While Nissan has built a good reputation for producing reliable cars, potential buyers should be aware of these common issues to make informed decisions when purchasing a Nissan Versa.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-01
  • VIN: 3N1CN7AP7FL
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I have had two major instances where the Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF) has caused my vehicle to lose total power. The first incident occurred around midnight one night as I was heading home. I was unable to accelerate from a stop sign and had to put the car in neutral and coast in reverse to be able to get my vehicle out of the road and along the curb. The vehicle would not start on its own. I had to have the vehicle towed and taken to a mechanic where repairs were completed. WIthin two months of these repairs, I notice the problem seems to be returning. Three times I notice the car not accelerating correctly and one instance where I tried to press the gas pedal and had no response from the car to it. Ultimately these issue led to my coming home one night around 2am and the car simply would not accelerate at all. I had to pull over and again call a tow truck. My mechanic tells me the the MAF sensor is faulty, but the company handling the extended warranty wants to see the car orior to repairs being done. However, that means I am stuck waiting almost a week before repairs can even begin. Its very nerve racking having this issue on your vehicle. Its an intermittent problem that seems to creep up whenever it feels like it, I have to drive my car for work and I often keep late hours. I dont like the idea of breaking down at night in an area I am not familiar with Having thid problem affects not only my and others safety but my overall well being and financial stability

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-09
  • VIN: 3N1CN7AP3FL
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: After I bought my 2015 Nissan Versa with VIN: [XXX[ in April 2019, the water gained entry inside the car due to heavy rain a month later. The incident has continued to occur; Unfortunately, I had kept blaming it on the height between the parking ground and the car floorboard. The design flaws on the Versa allow water to collect below the windshield. When the collected water doesn't drain, so it flows into the car on the front passenger side floor below the compartment gloves area. It causes visibility problems during rainy and winter seasons since the inside car is not completely sealed causing insulation issues. I had to buy different products to address the visibility problems. My car got flooded last May 2022 to the point I had to get a cup to get some of the water out. I started hearing a sloshing sound and quirking sound when pressing on the brake not too long and so on. I initially paid $1,200 to repair the electrical problems to a Nissan dealer and later found out the harness needed to be replaced due to water damage costing $7,200. The design flaw made my car unsafe due to the visibility problem during inclement weather. There is a blog where 2014 through 2018 Nissan Versa owners describing the same issue I have been experiencing. I am dumbfounded Nissan has never bothered to address this issue for so long; very few people have a disposable income to pay for repairs or constantly buy a new car in less than 5 years. The sad thing, I had to borrow money from my life insurance to pay the car off. I know Nissan will use the inspection defense. Please keep in mind all the cars that have been recalled before passed inspection, so it is not a valid point. • VIN: 3n1cn7ap3fl
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I was driving along and I went to stop but the brake didn't stop the car so I put in the car in park. Then the brake and engine lights started flashing at me so I turned of the car. I wasn't driving very fast at all, probably less than 20 miles per hour. Then when I restarted the car the brake and engine lights cam back on and the brake still wasn't working, and the car rolled while it was in park. I was not able to move the car to a safe spot. I had to sit partially in a traffic lane near a dangerous, blind curve. A sheriff's deputy saw my car and pulled in behind me to help protect me while we waited two hours for the Auto Club. My mechanic said the transmission totally failed and caused the problems.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-08
  • VIN: 3N1CN7AP0FL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The CVT transmission has gone bad on this vehicle, while on vacation the car started sputtering and shut off at a stop light. When I had the car towed to the dealership they told me I needed a new transmission because the torque converter has gone bad. When I complained that the car has only 97,000 some miles the dealership directed me to I-800-Nissan. I provided the requested information and received a call and the gentleman told me my car was not covered under the extended warranty (was extended to 80,000 miles), he went on to say that after researching to see if Nissan could help in any way he found that I had not have service done at one of their dealership and they could not offer any assistance at this time. The quote to replace the transmission with a remanufactured transmission is $4000.00. Upon researching this issue (I believe a transmission with a first maintenance schedule at 100,000 miles should at least make it to that maintenance timeline) I have discovered this CVT transmission problem is widespread among many Nissan models, the Versa included. There were no warning lights or prior problems before it just quit.

  • Summary: A REAR WHEEL BEARING FAILED AND WAS REPLACED AT 14,900 MILES IN 2017. NOW, A REAR WHEEL BEARING HAS FAILED AGAIN AT 59,500 MILES. THE DEALERSHIP WILL NOT MAKE ANY CONCESSION ON THE FAULTY PARTS AND/OR FLAW IN THE QUALITY THAT NISSAN IS USING. WHEEL BEARINGS SHOULD NOT FAIL AT THIS POINT IN A VEHICLE'S LIFE (LOW MILES). THE WHEEL GETS EXTREMELY HOT AND COULD LOCK-UP CAUSING A LOSS OF CONTROL. I HAVE READ MANY COMPLAINTS FOR THE SAME ISSUE. THIS IS UNSATISFACTORY. THESE CAR MODELS SHOULD BE CHECKED AND REPLACED IF NEEDED BY NISSAN AT NO COST TO THE OWNER. MY VEHICLE IS TILL WITHIN THE 60,000 MILE WARRANTY BUT 4 MONTHS BEYOND THE 60 MONTHS.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-02-02
  • VIN: 3N1CN7AP6FL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: WHEN TAKING OFF THE TRANSMISSION BELT SLIPS ALL THE TIME SO I TRY TO EASE INTO THE GAS AS GENTLY AS POSSIBLE. WHEN A/C IS RUNNING THE CAR HAS ALMOST ZERO ACCELERATION AND HAS A STUTTERING OR STUMBLING ISSUE THAT CAUSES ISSUES UNTIL I HIT 3000 3500 RPM THEN SEEMS TO GAIN POWER. I HAVE ISSUES ON THE HIGHWAY WITH THE TRANSMISSION SEEMING TO SLIP OUT OF ENGAGEMENT OF THE BELT WHEN SPEEDING UP TO PASS. WHEN SLOWING DOWN FOR A LIGHT, IF THE LIGHT TURNS BEFORE I COME TO A COMPLETE STOP AND I GO TO REAPPLY PRESSURE TO THE GAS PEDAL, IF I DONT GENTLY APPLY THE GAS THE TRANSMISSION BELT WILL SLIP AND CAUSE THE CAR TO SHUTTER. IM NOT SURE WHAT IS CAUSING THIS ISSUE, BUT I HAVE HAD SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR AROUND 40000 MILES, A CRICKET CHIRPING NOISE THAT IN THE BEGINNING WAS ALWAYS AT 2000RPM AND NO WHERES ELSE IN THE RPM RANGE. NOW IT HAS GOTTEN WORSE TO WHERE I SEEM TO HEAR THE CHIRPING NOISE ANYWHERE AROUND 1500 RPM TO 2250RPM RANGE. AS WELL I HAVE HAD THE RADIATOR FAN QUIT WORKING CAUSING THE MOTOR TO OVER HEAT PRETTY BAD BUT THE HEAD GASKET DIDNT FAIL LUCKILY. I HAVE ALSO HAD THE ENTIRE TIME I HAVE OWNED THE CAR, AN ISSUE WITH THE A/C WHEN IT STARTS UP THE CLUTCH BASICALLY CLUNCKS ON OR MAKES AN AWFUL NOISE KICKING ON AND WHILE THE A/C WOULD RUN BEFORE THE FAN FAILED, THE AIR WOULD START SMELLING VERY VERY BAD. IT SMELLED LIKE CHEMICALS OF SOME SORT AND IT WOULD MAKE ME VERY NATIOUS TO THE POINT I WOULD HAVE TO TURN THE A/C OFF AND LIVING IN THE DESERT IN TUCSON, ARIZONA THIS DOES NOT MAKE FOR A VERY GOOD COMFORTABLE RIDE AT ALL.

2015 Nissan Versa recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2015 Nissan Versa.

2015-08-12
  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2012-2015 Nissan Versa sedan vehicles manufactured June 9, 2011, to March 11, 2015, and 2014-2015 Nissan Versa Note vehicles manufactured April 23, 2013, to March 11, 2015. The affected vehicles have a center console trim panel that may catch the driver's shoe and delay the transition from the accelerator pedal to the brake pedal.
  • Consequence: A delay in the application of the brake pedal would lengthen the distance needed to stop the vehicle and increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will modify the console trim panel, free of charge. The recall began on September 14, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

Negative 2015 Nissan Versa car reviews

  1. Linwood Kuphal 2025-01-03

I recently purchased a 2015 Nissan Versa SV from a local dealership. Unfortunately, the transmission had to be replaced within 24 hours of owning the car. Although the repair was covered under warranty, I was disappointed with the situation. Despite my concerns, I am hopeful that the car will not experience any further issues.

  2. Dillon Ebert 2024-10-10

I purchased this car brand new in October 2015, and unfortunately it stopped working in October 2020. Despite trying to jump-start it multiple times, it was clear that the issue was not the battery. As a responsible car owner, I have always taken it for regular maintenance and have never been in an accident with it. It has a clean title. However, the cost of repairing the car is more than its worth, so I am now in the market for a new vehicle. I must say that I am disappointed with my experience with Nissan and would not recommend them.

  3. Jon Smith 2024-09-19

I purchased this car new in 2015 and while the mpg is great, unfortunately, that's the only high point. The car is really light and gets moved by the wind, making it poorly constructed. I've had some issues with my rear spoiler coming unattached twice, as well as problems with the CD player and transmission going out at 30,000 miles. Thankfully, I was able to get it repaired under warranty. If you're thinking about this car, please be skeptical. While I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, I hope this information helps you make an informed decision.

  4. Theron Mills 2024-09-06

I've had this vehicle for almost 2 years. While it is a decent car to get from point A to point B with amazing gas mileage, I would not recommend purchasing it. The acceleration is very poor, making it difficult to merge onto the freeway and keep up with traffic. The brakes are also not very impressive and have a hard time stopping abruptly. I have had to put air into the tires frequently and most recently, the transmission failed. Luckily, I am still under the dealership's 2 year warranty, so the replacement transmission will be covered this time. However, it is concerning that a car with so few miles and not even 2 years old is already having such significant issues that carry a large price tag to repair outside of the warranty.

  5. Kade Abernathy 2024-07-27

Your Versa has great fuel economy! However, replacement parts can be expensive. If you want to keep your Versa running smoothly, it's important to change parts with better quality parts at the service interval. For example, the Versa comes with cheap, pressed-on wheel bearings. It's suggested to change these bearings at 30,000 miles. The cost of high-quality bearings is $380 for both front bearings, plus $400 for labor. The cost of cheap bearings is only $100 for both. I recently had mine replaced with high-quality bearings, which will probably last 100,000 miles or the life of the car. The same goes for spark plugs - replace them with Iridium plugs at the first spark plug change. Don't go cheap and your car will last. Remember, you didn't buy a luxury car, you bought an economical

Positive 2015 Nissan Versa car reviews

  1. Liam Hammes 2024-10-11

I've owned this vehicle for over six years now. I bought it for around $12,000 - $14,000 after tax, with a monthly payment of $208. When I first got it, it had 15,xxx miles on it. Now, it has 128,xxx miles. I knew from the start that it was a no-frills car, often referred to as 'The cheapest family car in America'. I opted for the cheapest model with manual window rollers and locks, which some of my friends found strange for a new car. However, I'm glad I made that choice because I never have to worry about motor failure. The car has cruise control and an aux port on the radio, which is all I need. I was only 19 when I got this car, and I needed reliable transportation with great gas mileage for my first full-time office job. It has delivered on that front. I wanted something I could afford even if I lost my job, and it was a wise move. Over the years, I've had several job changes and gone through life's motions, but I've always been able to afford and maintain this vehicle. Many of my friends splurged on luxury vehicles with $800+ car payments and struggled to keep up with them. In terms of maintenance, I've had to replace the radiator fan and battery, but both were cheap fixes. The car is easy to work on, and parts are affordable compared to other brands. Tires are also very cheap, with a Douglas tire costing only $44. However, I opted for the more expensive Good Year tires. I've regularly changed the oil and air filters, as well as the wipers. Changing the oil myself is super easy, and I can do it with the car flat on the ground and unjacked. As for accidents and user operator error, there have been none to report.I've had a few minor incidents with this car, including bumping into objects and accidentally backing into another car (luckily with no damage to my own). I've also driven over rough patches and hit some small metal reflective stakes on curves, but I've found that the car is easy to work on and I was able to fix any damage myself. I've even hit the occasional opossum, but the car has never stopped running. While it may be a little underpowered, once you get going, the car sails along just fine. The CVT transmission can be a bit annoying at low rpms and sharp gas pedal presses, but overall the car offers plenty of power and has done just fine. It's also very light, which contributes to its great gas mileage and floaty feel. The downside is that it can be shaky in strong winds on the highway, but it's still manageable. On average, I get about 33-34 mpg, but if I try really hard, I can get up to 40mpg. This car has saved me tons of money and has truly paid for itself. Before this car, I had a 2000 Ford Ranger that was a death trap and money pit, so even though the Versa isn't the most luxurious, it's a night and day difference. Overall, it's a great little car that handles well in rural and city driving and calm highways. I've paid off this car and plan on keeping it for a few more years until the wheels fall off. I may update in a few years and another 100,000 miles.

Congratulations on your new car! It's understandable to feel a bit worried after reading reviews, but it's great to hear that you're enjoying your car so far. It's also reassuring to know that you have a 5-year warranty on the engine and that you're prepared to take action if needed. I hope that you continue to have a positive experience with your car for many years to come!

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2015 Nissan Versa. I bought it with only 28 test driven miles on it and now, as of 9/10/20, I have driven it for 138,888 miles. I have had no issues with it at all, thanks to regular oil changes and a breeze of a tune-up with new plugs. While it may not be the sportiest car out there, it definitely makes up for it in the family department. Living in Ohio, I was pleasantly surprised at how well it handles in the snow with a good set of tires - it's like a tank! In fact, I've been rear-ended three separate times, once by a new 1500 Silverado that totaled the truck, but each time I was able to drive home. The gas mileage is great, although the responses from the CVT can be a bit slow. Overall, I am very pleased with my little tank.
