2014 Nissan Versa problems

nissan logo

Nissan Versa is an automobile nameplate used by the Japanese manufacturer Nissan in the Americas for the following models:

According to a Nissan press release in 2008, "versa" is short for "versatile space" meant to imply the spaciousness of the interior and configurable cargo arrangements. The Versa is one of the few remaining subcompact cars left on sale in the North American market, with most automakers dropping small cars from their lineups to focus on crossovers and SUVs.

Common 2014 Nissan Versa problems

The 2014 Nissan Versa has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to powertrain issues, a problematic start/stop button, and a loose lower body bolt.

  • Powertrain Issues: The most common problem reported by owners of the 2014 Nissan Versa is related to the powertrain. The Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) has been reported to have issues with shifting gears without warning, causing slow and sluggish acceleration.
  • Problematic Start/Stop Button: Another common problem reported by owners of the 2014 Nissan Versa is related to the start/stop button. In some cases, the start/stop button has been reported to stick in its housing, causing the engine to shut off without warning while driving. This can be a significant safety concern and has been addressed through recalls to repair the issue.
  • Loose Lower Body Bolt: A recall was issued to replace the lower body bolt, which can become loose or even missing. This can compromise the vehicle's body integrity, increasing the risk of injury or worse in a crash.
  • Rear Seat Latch Bolt: If the rear seat latch bolt breaks, the rear seat will not perform as designed during a crash, increasing the risk of injury to rear seat occupants. This issue has also been addressed through recalls to repair the problem.
  • Air Conditioning Issues: Some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system, including refrigerant leaks, faulty sensors, or clogged cabin air filters. These issues can cause the air conditioning system to fail to provide adequate cooling or even stop working altogether .
  • Door Handles and Locks: Some owners have reported issues with door handles and locks, including problems with interior and exterior door handles, door locks, and window switches. These issues can cause inconvenience and even safety concerns, especially if the doors cannot be opened or closed properly .

In summary, the 2014 Nissan Versa has several common problems, primarily related to powertrain issues, a problematic start/stop button, and a loose lower body bolt. These issues have been addressed through recalls, but they can still be a concern for owners of this vehicle. Additionally, issues with the air conditioning system, door handles and locks, and other components can also be a concern for owners of the 2014 Nissan Versa.

Is Nissan Versa 2014 a good car?

While the previous model was our top-rated subcompact sedan, the changes made to the new version have dropped it to the bottom of its category. On the positive side, this Versa gets much better fuel economy -- 32 mpg overall vs. 27 -- and it provides a roomy rear seat. But it's slow, noisy and handles clumsily.

What is the common problem with Nissan Versa?

Some of the most common Nissan Versa issues involve its transmission, steering, air bags, and coil springs.

Do 2014 Nissan Versa have transmission problems?

Transmission failures are a widespread problem found on the Versa at around 80,000 miles. The CVT transmissions are a known weak point across all Nissan models from 2014. There's no way to fix a CVT transmission if it fails, so it will have to be replaced.

How many miles will a 2014 Nissan Versa last?

On average, a well-maintained Nissan can last between 200,000 to 300,000 miles. This means if you drive around 15,000 miles per year, which is the average for most drivers, you can expect your Nissan to last between 13 to 20 years.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-03
  • VIN: 3N1CE2CP8EL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Over the past 4 years I have delt with my 2014 Nissan Versa Note SV constantly stalling in the middle of the road. I have replaced the transmission, TCM, and brake light wiring harness. I have had the Nissan dealership assess my vehicle three different times for 3+ days. They have completed wiring diagnostics and determined that the brake light wiring harness is getting water into the wiring causing a short and blowing the #49 fuse under the hood that also operates the transmission CVT/TCM. Their solution was to replace the wiring harness. This was completed last week. It rained again the last couple days off and on. The fuse has blown again. This causes the vehicle to stall in the middle of the road. There is no advanced warning or messages that appear. The check engine light does not come on either. It is way too hot out for my new baby for the vehicle to stall and not be able to run. Cars begin honking and swerving around my vehicle. The vehicle has to be pushed out of the road. Fuse after fuse has been replaced. New light bulbs. New wiring harness and still the same outcome. Please help.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-01
  • VIN: 3N1CE2CP2EL
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Hi, I am writing to express my concern regarding a recurring issue with my 2014 Nissan Versa Note. Recently, I noticed that the vehicle emits a noticeable noise when the engine reaches 1500 to 2000 RPM. Upon consulting a mechanic, I was informed that this problem is common with the CVT transmission in Nissan Versa Note models. The mechanic advised that the transmission needs to be replaced, as this defect poses a significant hazard. There is a risk that the transmission could fail without warning, compromising the safety of the vehicle and its occupants. Given the severity of this issue, I request that Nissan initiate a recall to address and rectify this problem promptly. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.

STEERING,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-15
  • VIN: 3N1CE2CP4EL
  • Components: STEERING,POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: We bought a Nissan Versa Note 2014 in March of 2023. It currently has 74K miles. The transmission is shot. It doesn't want to shift, and revs up to high rpm's. We have had two mechanics check on it. Up to $7,000 to get fixed. The second issue is the steering. The steering gear has gone out. It makes a clicking noise when turning. This is so bad the mechanic said not to drive the car anymore. $1100 to fix. We now need to pay as much to fix the car as we owe on it.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 1990-11-08
  • VIN: 3N1CE2CPXEL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: My transmission went out pre-maturely on the high way and I almost got rear-ended. It’s a CVT transmission which has had a class action lawsuit which I wasn’t aware of when I bought car in 2020. Nissan should hold more responsibility but they refuse to help my basically totaled car.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-03
  • VIN: 3N1CN7AP8EL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: At approximately 130K miles the CVT transmission had a sudden failure. Struggles to shift gears properly and often will pick a random one, which causes further damaged. Vehicle has sat for years, the transmission is unrepairable and a new unit must be installed which cost around $3500 for the transmission alone not including labor as told by the Nissan dealership. I now sit with a giant paper weight that is useless and worth nothing. Manufacturer should be held responsible as this issue exists and has been recalled in other models and years with the same transmission or issue.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-30
  • VIN: 3N1CN7AP9EL

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-07
  • VIN: 3N1CE2CP0EL
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Heat shields for exhaust system particularly protecting the gas tank from high heat tear easily at bolts making a rattling sound as a first symptom. This causes cracks in the heat shield which is flimsy, thin material. It poses a risk to drivers in that the gas tank could explode due to lack of protection or from poor protection from heat of exhaust. The sheer number of Nissan Versa and Versa Plus heat shields failing is alarming.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-01
  • VIN: 3N1CE2CP3EL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: When reaching speeds around 20 mph, usually on turning corners, car feels like its 'skipping' not catching (so this could be like when picking up speed after reducing speed). I'm currently having wheel bearings replaced and the certified mechanic working on it says it appears to be transmission related and recommended me to take it to Nissan as he assumed (wrongly!) that it should still be covered under warranty. The vehicle has 71,000 miles. This issue doesn't always appear and is random as to showing up, but it is frequent.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-14
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 3N1CN7AP8EL
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: When I was driving normally on a hot day(90 degree), in on and go traffic, the lights of Engine, brake, battery, power steering suddenly all lighted up and the Engine stalked any the same time without any warning. Brake, power steering, oil pedal all stopped working. At that time, the AC was not in use so it would not be a problem. I turned off the Engine, and turned on it again and everything worked normally again. I brought my car to check the battery, charging system, starting system. All good. Also, I check all fluid levels(brake, transmission, engine oil, coolant, window wash fluid) which were all normal. I am the first owner of the car. The car was well maintained and gently used, and only has 15,000 miles. The most recent oil change was two months ago and it was also inspected by the Nissan dealer that time without any problems. This is very dangerous for my family. That time I was driving in the heavy traffic on high way, when the engine stalked suddenly and my car lost power, my car was hit by a SUV behind me. I researched this problem online and found I was not alone. Many people experienced same thing as a Nissan Versa owner. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFrQBnIxyq8&ab_channel=KTNVChannel13LasVegas)

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-07
  • VIN: 3n1cn7ap2el
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: When I first bouth this car used in 2020, the car suddenly begins accellerating rapidly but going nowhere while driving and I had the transmission replaced very soon after 68000 miles but, luckily it was under warranty. Now, less than 2 years after NISSAN replaced the transmission, I am driving down the interstate and my car starts jumping and going really slow and sluggish to get to the next gear then just takes off normally again. This will happen with the car just driving normally after that then again a shudder and slow down but its never consistent. I took it to Nissan again and guess what, the transmission went again. These Automotic CVT RE0F11A Transmissions in Nissans are severe safety issues and I have noticed and heard from mechanics all over and on this website even.

Negative 2014 Nissan Versa car reviews

  1. Armand Brown 2024-11-08

When purchasing a car, it's important to do your research and shop around for the best deal. It's also a good idea to keep in mind that salespeople may try to take advantage of first-time buyers. In my personal experience, I paid over $16,000 for a Nissan Versa with just basic features and a high interest rate. Additionally, the car I received had 128 miles on it instead of being brand new, and I had to bring it in for repairs multiple times, including a recall for a sticking accelerator. It's important to be cautious and informed when making a big purchase like a car.

  2. Kody Gutmann 2024-10-24

I bought my 2014 Versa brand new because I needed reliable transportation for my daily commute from PA to NY. Despite having put 182,000 miles on it, the car has held up well. The only issue I've had is with the transmission, which started acting up in 2019. Unfortunately, the cost of replacing it was more than the car is worth. However, considering that I purchased the basic model with no power options, I feel like I got my money's worth. I plan on driving it until the transmission completely gives out, at which point I'll switch to my trusty '95 Bronco. Thanks for reading!

  3. Norbert Greenholt 2024-10-03

Although my experience with this car has been challenging, I have learned a lot about car maintenance and repair. I have had some issues with the handling in wet and snowy conditions, as well as with the CVT transmission. Unfortunately, since I received the car as a gift and it was preowned, I did not have a warranty to cover the repairs. Despite the difficulties, I was able to get the transmission fixed, but now it seems that there may be an issue with the head gasket. While this is frustrating, I am confident that I will be able to find a solution and move forward. I am now considering trading in this car for a new one, but I am grateful for the lessons I have learned from this experience.

  4. Mitchell Pouros 2024-09-04

Your Versa has been incredibly reliable! Besides the motor burning some oil, which is normal for any car, you haven't had any problems in the 41k miles you've driven it. When you first got it in April 2014, it only had 2k miles on it, and it was a manual - I guess nobody rented it! You were using full synthetic oil when you got it, but switched to regular 5w30 because the synthetic was expensive. You had to add a quart at 3k miles, which is pretty normal. The owner's manual says you can go up to 5k miles for normal driving, so that's when you change it.

  5. Myrl Koelpin 2024-07-04

The car has a few areas that could be improved, such as the engine being noisy, buzzy, and underpowered, and the CVT transmission taking some time to get used to. However, it does have good fuel efficiency at an average of 34 MPG, and it rides and drives okay. Additionally, it offers lots of back seat leg room and a big trunk for a small car. Overall, it's an okay car, but not as nice to drive as my sister's new Ford Focus, which has similar MPG.

Positive 2014 Nissan Versa car reviews

  1. Jaren Lubowitz 2024-11-11

I bought this car brand new when I was 23 and now, at 30, it's still going strong. I finished paying it off and I still drive it because I've had no issues with it, other than a rattling noise I had a while back. This might sound bad, but I had no idea that I needed to do a transmission oil change. Anyhow, this little car is so spacious inside and I always get compliments on its space and Apple red color. I've driven it to Miami, FL twice from the border of Texas, as well as to San Antonio, Dallas, Houston, Mexico, and more, and yet my baby is still healthy. I don't want to sell it, but it's time for me to buy my Lexus. I've only had to change the tires once, for my job in Houston. The only thing I didn't like about this car was the seat (I have a long torso). Overall, I give this car an A+. It's gas efficient! In fact, two of my friends ended up buying Versas too...

  2. Jeffrey Gusikowski 2024-08-19

    1) You'll feel comfortable driving it. 2) It's practical and functional. 3) You'll love the good gas mileage. 4) It's a nice drive that you'll enjoy. 5) While it may not have a lot of power, it still has enough to get you where you need to go.

  3. Andre Rowe 2024-07-22

Congratulations on your new purchase! I hope your wife enjoys her daily commute, shopping trips, and taking the dog to the groomers in the 2014 Nissan Versa Note Sv 5 door hatchback. It's great to hear that the car has Bluetooth, air conditioning, cruise control, rear camera, and an AM/FM USB. The convenience package sounds like a great addition with its adjustable floor, bigger audio screen, and rear camera. The fold-down seats with an armrest are a nice touch too. It's good to know that the car drives smoothly and quietly, and the cruise control works excellently. Nissan seems to have some great deals on this vehicle. Wishing you and your family all the best with your new car!

  4. Armando Jones 2024-06-20

I recently purchased an SV model and have driven close to 200 miles. I must say, it's absolutely terrific! It's exactly what I was looking for - a reliable car that gets me from point A to point B without breaking the bank. If you're in the market for a luxury vehicle, I would recommend the Acura line or possibly Honda. However, for a normal commute, this car is perfect. I'm getting an average of 36 mpg and I'm loving it. The CVT transmission is smoother than most normal transmission cars I've driven, so it doesn't bother me at all (based on reviews). I've owned a Datsun B-210 (manual) and an Altima, so I do have a soft spot for Nissan. The car has plenty of room and its ingenuity really stands out to me. I highly recommend taking one out for a test drive - you won't be disappointed. I did, and now I'm a proud owner!

  5. Werner Kovacek 2024-05-08

I'm getting 32.5 mpg with mixed driving of highway and street. I opted for the 5-speed and I'm absolutely loving it. It took them 2 months to order it, but it was definitely worth the wait. Although it doesn't have power windows, locks, or mirrors, everything else is standard. This car is perfect for my work commute, as I drive 52 miles to work one way. Plus, it has a timing chain, which means it will last forever with less maintenance.
