2024 Nissan Versa problems
Nissan Versa is an automobile nameplate used by the Japanese manufacturer Nissan in the Americas for the following models:
According to a Nissan press release in 2008, "versa" is short for "versatile space" meant to imply the spaciousness of the interior and configurable cargo arrangements. The Versa is one of the few remaining subcompact cars left on sale in the North American market, with most automakers dropping small cars from their lineups to focus on crossovers and SUVs.

Common 2024 Nissan Versa problems
The Nissan Versa, despite being a popular and affordable vehicle, has some common problems that have been reported by its owners. These issues, although not universal, are worth considering before purchasing a Nissan Versa, especially for the 2024 model year.
- Catalytic Converter Failure: Another common complaint among Nissan Versa owners is the failure of the catalytic converter, which can lead to the engine dying and the car failing at inopportune times. This issue is more prevalent in models with high mileage, typically over 100,000 kilometers.
- Brittle Ride and Vague Steering: The 2024 Nissan Versa, although more stylish than its predecessors, has been criticized for its brittle ride and vague steering, which can make for an uncomfortable driving experience. These issues are particularly disappointing in a budget car, where a smooth and responsive ride is expected.
- Uneven Interior Quality: The interior of the 2024 Nissan Versa, while improved from previous generations, still falls short in terms of overall quality and consistency. This can be a significant issue for those seeking a more premium driving experience, even in an entry-level vehicle.
- Tight Rear Seat: The rear seat of the 2024 Nissan Versa has been criticized for being tight, which can make it uncomfortable for passengers, particularly in longer trips. This is in contrast to previous Versa models, which were known for their spacious interiors.
- Lackluster Fuel Economy: Despite being a subcompact car, the 2024 Nissan Versa's fuel economy is not as impressive as some of its competitors, with an overall rating of 32 mpg. This can be a significant consideration for those seeking a fuel-efficient vehicle for daily commuting.
In conclusion, the Nissan Versa, while an affordable and stylish option in the subcompact car market, has some common problems that potential buyers should be aware of. These issues range from fuel injection and catalytic converter failures to brittle rides, vague steering, uneven interior quality, tight rear seats, and lackluster fuel economy. By being informed about these potential issues, buyers can make a more informed decision when considering the 2024 Nissan Versa as their next vehicle.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-15
- VIN: 3N1CN8BV1RL
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I just got my car yesterday. I was leaving work and my car had no power. I couldn't get up to speed for a very long time, it was as if it was in limp mode. I got home and scanned it and got a P2615 code. upon doing research I have found several others having this problem. It is very scary and dangerous to drive this way. Also, cleared the code and it runs fine until the next time. This problem needs to be addressed before someone gets hurt or worse.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-15
- VIN: 3N1CN8BV1RL
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: This Versa was purchased brand new with 6 miles on it, delivered 8/16/2024. Strong odor of fuel inside cabin after city driving about 90 minutes in 100+ degree heat with a/c (on either recirculating or fresh air) in [XXX] . So overwhelming, causing burning eyes, throat, and nose forcing me to shut off engine. Predictably occurs when outside heat is over 100 deg F. This occurred within only 30 days of purchase at about 1300 miles, and so far occurred 4 times thus far total since purchase date to present. It took me a few weeks to fully understand the root cause until inspection under hood revealed fuel leakage around fuel injectors where inserted in intake manifold, and possibly fuel rail. Brought car in to Nissan dealer that sold me it and they said they smelled no odor (most likely because engine was cold and they only test drove briefly) and found no leaks. No due diligence or urgency on their part, and it was after their dismissive response that I encouraged sent the service advisor photos of the leaky fuel taken from days prior, in order to be taken seriously and have it fixed with some urgency under warranty, as this leaky fuel on hot manifold can combust or leak into cylinders. SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-10
- VIN: 3N1CN8BV1RL
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: New Versa delivered 8/16/2024. Rear seat belt alarm will NOT chime when 1,2, or 3 passenger(s) are seated in the rear without fastening their seatbelts. However when passenger(s) DO buckle in properly, the alarm falsely and unnecessarily chimes for 45+ seconds.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-23
- VIN: 3N1CN8BV1RL
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Brand new Versa delivered 8/16/2024. Started to hear chirping, whirring noise from clutch pedal when halfway depressed (right before bite) and also when releasing pedal, halfway up, when engine is warm. First started at 1200 miles and continues presently. Taken to Nissan dealership on 10/8/2024 and was told their mechanics don’t have the time to drive around and make engine warm to reproduce clutch symptoms. Major concern as this is brand new from the Nissan factory already exhibiting major clutch symptoms indicative of faulty release bearing/release fork, causing potentially catastrophic transmission damage a few hundred or thousand miles from now, when it could have otherwise been prevented promptly, under factory warranty. Vehicle is available for inspection by NHTSA. No one injured.
ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-17
- VIN: 3N1CN8BVXRL
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Vehicle loses power, ability to accelerate and is unable reach a speed above 35-40 mph regardless of gear (manual transmission) or downshifting, requiring you to pull off road; has occurred four times now. After turning vehicle off and restarting, operation is normal. Nissan dealer checked and pulled up a code regarding coded keys and reprogrammed keys; could not replicate the power/acceleration issue. Problem still re-occurred. There are no warnings, warning lights or symptoms until you accelerate.
POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-17
- VIN: 3N1CN8BV3RL
- Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My car is equipped with a 5 speed manual transmission and I stalled on a hill and was alerted to a check engine light and reduced power.
POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-26
- VIN: 3N1CN8DV0RL
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: I just purchased my 2024 Nissan VERSA two weeks ago August 24, 2024. Since I have had it my car doesn’t seem to want to shift speed like it should. My transmission seems to be stalling to change out. My car also constantly makes a growling noise when left I’m on my brakes sitting. I took my car back to the dealerships and they tried tell me that it was the compressor which is false my AC nor my defrost is on. I really need this problem resolved. The noise it’s making is unbelievable coming from a brand new car.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-08
- VIN: 3N1CN8BVXRL
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: After four months of driving without incident, all of a sudden, the car repeatedly stalled. When I restarted the car, no matter how much I pushed on the gas pedal, it wouldn't accelerate. At one point, I had the gas pedal to the floor, but the rpm indicator stayed very low and the car was only able to go around 30 mph. It was clear the car couldn't be driven safely, so we had it towed to the dealer, and the dealer said he couldn't replicate the problem, but the dealer has recently had a lot of problems, so I wouldn't take them at their word.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-09
- VIN: 3N1CN8BV3RL
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: My 2024 Nissan Versa 5 speed has gone into limp mode approximately 4 times in 6 months. When this happens you can’t accelerate which could be a great safety issue

- VIN: 3N1CN8BV3RL
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: The vehicle loses power, at a certain point it does not accelerate and does not respond well, which is a major safety problem when you need it on the road.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-05
- VIN: 3N1CN8BV6RL
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: After car stalls, the vehicle enters limp mode. I’ve also randomly lost power and can barely accelerate. It’s very alarming and dangerous.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-02
- VIN: 3N1CN8BV3RL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: Vehicle would not accelerate past 55 MPH after stalling. No warning. Got on the highway and the car was extremely lagging and the accelerator produced no response. Floored the vehicle and still nothing. Had to pull over and cycle the key 5x to fix the issue. I have stalled a few times, and this was the first time to “limp mode” occurred. The vehicle can be inspected at request of NHTSA. I believe it’s a common issue with these Nissans based on what I’ve read from forums.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-08
- VIN: 3N1CN8BV7RL
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I recently purchased a new 2024 Nissan Versa S with the manual transmission. I am an experienced manual transmission driver; however, I have stalled it 3 times in the last 5400 miles. The following issue appears after stalling and restarting the vehicle. After restarting the vehicle, everything seems normal. There are no warning lights on the dash to show otherwise, however when you begin to accelerate, the vehicle seems to be in some kind of “limp mode”. The vehicle is extremely sluggish and will barely accelerate. The first time this happened I stalled the vehicle in traffic. After restarting the car, I slowly pulled up to the stop bar as I continued to complete a U-turn at a green stop light with oncoming traffic heading my way. I had no knowledge that the vehicle would be in this “limp mode”. This almost caused an accident because the vehicle had very little acceleration and I could not accelerate fast enough to get to the speed limit as oncoming cars quickly approached behind me. I continued to have acceleration problems in multiple gears, so I pulled over, parked the vehicle and shut off the ignition. Upon restarting the vehicle a few minutes later, the slow acceleration issued seemed to go away. This “limp mode” has happened to me 3 times in about 5400 miles. I have been driving manual transmission cars for over 25 years and have never had a vehicle go into “limp mode” simply because I let the clutch out to fast/slow and stalled the vehicle. Stalling out a vehicle with a manual transmission occasionally is normal. Going into limp mode afterwards is not normal and is indicative of a serious safety deficiency within the vehicle. Upon reading the other reports of similar circumstances regarding 2022-2024 Versa’s with manual transmissions, it seems there may a larger safety problem with these vehicles.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-23
- VIN: 3N1CN8BV6RL
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I recently purchased a brand new Nissan Versa, and I've been experiencing a serious issue with it. The car loses power after stalling while I'm driving, whether on the highway or in city traffic. What's alarming is that there are no warnings before this happens. Not being able to maintain a speed above 30 mph on the freeway is extremely dangerous, as I can't accelerate to avoid potential hazards. This problem occurred just 4 days ago, and the car only had 500 miles on it at the time. I took it to the dealership, but they informed me that they can't assist until I've made my first payment on the car. Given the severity of the issue, I believe this situation needs urgent attention.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-15
- VIN: 3N1CN8BV3RL
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Loss of power after stalling (manual transmission), vehicle extremely is sluggish and will not accelerate beyond 50 mph. Occurred 6 times over 2 months (since purchase). Usually corrects with complete turn off and restart, though one time it would not reset until the next day, creating hazardous driving conditions.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-20
- VIN: 3N1CN8BV7RL
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Reduced engine power after restarting the vehicle. Stalled the manual transmission equipped vehicle when pulling out of my driveway. Restarted and drove without any warning lights or indication there was an issue. Roads were mostly down hill and through numerous red lights so vehicle appeared to be driving normally. Noticed the issue about a mile later when trying to drive up a highway on-ramp. There was traffic from the other direction so I had to come to a complete stop at the base of the hill. Once in second gear it was apparent there was not enough power to accelerate and merge onto highway. Pulled over and shut off vehicle. Removed key from ignition. Opened and closed drivers door. started engine, waited for traffic to clear, drove up on-ramp without issue. Have not had an opportunity to return to dealer. Vehicle drives normally now. This is the first time I noticed this issue even though I have stalled and restarted the engine numerous times, vehicle seemed to drive normally afterwards. I have read others have a similar issue and that NHTSA is investigating it.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-19
- VIN: 3N1CN8BV8RL
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Over 5 times since new (vehicle currently has ~6000 mils) the vehicle has went into a sort of reduced power limp mode while driving. Sometimes has occurred after stalling the engine (stick shift). When in this mode there are no warning lights; you can press on the gas pedal to 100% but does not fully perform as it should. I would estimate it's at around 25% power when having the issue. Seems the same as Investigation: PE24007 Proof of issue -> [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-21
- VIN: 3N1CN8BV3RL
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Upon stalling the vehicle goes into limp mode not allowing me to rev the engine above 3000 rpm or travel faster than roughly 30mph. This issue only happened after stalling but is very concerning to me.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-16
- VIN: 3N1CN8BVXRL
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: Intermittently the car will not accelerate when needed. It becomes excrutiatingly and terrifyingly slow. This is life-threating when coming into highway speed traffic from an exit ramp. On the highway, I've had cars slam on brakes behind me as I tried to accelerate from traffic lights. I saw no warning lamps.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-03
- VIN: 3N1CN8DV8RL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: My 2024 Nissan Versa has acceleration problems. In less than 24 hours of having the car, when driving and without warning, the power of the vehicle began to decline while I was driving in traffic. It didn't matter how hard I pressed the acceleration the car would continue to power down. This caused cars to honk and swerve to avoid crashing in the back of me. It took many pumps to the accelerator to get the car to power to the speed of traffic again. The car also powers down to nothing intermittently if I am stopped at a red light on in rush hour traffic. Again, I am having to press the accelerator numerous times to get the car to work and with that, there is a jerking feel to it. Also within 24 hours, a service symbol appeared on the dash while driving and then went away within 30mins of driving. I took the vehicle back to the Nissan Dealership I purchased it from and they claim they did not find anything wrong.
POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-10
- VIN: 3N1CN8BV9RL
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: Problem Description: Loss of acceleration in 5-speed manual S trim model. It seems that almost every time you stall this car, it will enter a "limp mode" or something like that, where your RPMs are capped for the rest of the drive, until you turn off the car and fully restart it. In this mode, even in 1st gear, you can go (from a stop) about 5 mph tops, if there is any incline. I am a new standard transmission driver, so stalling is at the moment not rare. This means my car enters this dangerous state often. 1. I am unsure what exact component(s) failed, or even if this is a fail rather than some intentional "safe" mode. 2. Because I live in the hill country, acceleration from a stop is almost nothing in this "limp" mode, which put me in a very dangerous situation. It caused me to crawl through an oncoming traffic lane as I was turning left into a turn lane, since I did not realize this mode had been activated. Had I been shooting a gap in traffic, I would have likely been hit at 70+ mph. 3. Not as of yet, but online research suggests this is not a new issue. 4. No. 5. No. This is a brand new car, and this limp state is not indicated by anything other than extreme loss of power until you reset the car.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-10
- VIN: 3N1CN8BVXRL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: I was practicing manual transmission on my new Nissan Versa and when I stalled, that check engine light came on and I lost a LOT of power in all gears. In first gear, there’s also a whine that goes with it, and I don’t think that’s normal

I rented this car for a work event and drove it mainly on the highway for about 300 miles. I completely agree with the Edmunds review. Here's what I loved about it: Firstly, the size was perfect for me. It's small enough to easily drive around and park in the city, but not so small that you feel unsafe. Secondly, the fuel economy was excellent. I estimate that it easily beat 40 MPG this week. Thirdly, the infotainment system was fantastic. It was so easy to use and the perfect size for CarPlay. Fourthly, the cloth seats were extremely comfortable, even for someone as tall as me. Lastly, the cruise control and voice controls were very intuitive and easy to use. There were a few things that could be improved, such as the sluggish acceleration, but this is to be expected for a car like the Versa. Additionally, the suspension could be better and the car is mostly made of hard plastic. However, I didn't mind this too much. Overall, I had a great experience with this car.As a rental, I cannot speak to the long-term quality of the car, but I really enjoyed driving it. The car had a modern take on the classic Ford Temp from the 90s. The only downside is the price. After researching, I found that the SV model, like the one I rented, costs $21K, which I found hard to justify. However, the S model starts at a more reasonable price of $16K, which is a better value. The Versa has come a long way in 16 years since my wife owned a 2007 model. If you are considering spending over $20K, I would suggest looking into a Corolla or a Chevy Bolt to take advantage of the full tax benefits. I gave it 4 stars due to the pricing.
-
I purchased my car brand new in July 2021, with a manufacturing date of June 2021. It has been an amazing experience so far, with great gas mileage of over 40+ MPG and still maintaining its peppy performance despite its small size. The car boasts impressive technology, including a Panasonic audio system, which I was curious to explore. I opted for the highest trim, the SR, in a beautiful pearl tri-coat paint color, with every available option. The only thing I would have liked to add is leather seats, which I plan to have redone to my liking. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase and have no regrets whatsoever.
-
You have a really nice car with great features!
-
The Versa is a very convenient and reliable car, especially considering its affordable price. While the SR trim may not be the best choice for those seeking a sports car with speed, it is still a great option for everyday commuting. It's worth noting that Versas are more susceptible to damage and can be easily totaled in accidents. As someone who has owned both the 2020 SV and 2023 SR, I can attest to this. However, if you're looking for an affordable car for your daily commute, the Versa is a great choice.
-
Let's preface this by saying that I am an amateur car reviewer and an extremely picky driver. However, I must say that the Versa SR with CVT and 1.6L absolutely blew me away for the price. The handling is hands-down the best of any car on the market. The smooth, light steering makes parking maneuvers a breeze and is a commuter's best friend. It firms up at speed, but firms up the least of any car I've driven. The ride quality is very good for the segment, well, for any segment, actually. It isn't as floaty and soft as I'd like, but it is softer and gentler than most. The ride comfort felt on par or better than the Sentra, Altima, and Rogue. The build quality of the interior and overall build quality is outstanding. It has a solid feel to everything and all needed accoutrements. The infotainment is great, with physical buttons and knobs, which is what every car interior should have at a minimum. As for power, the engine is expectedly weak when accelerating, but it is a 1.6L, after all. You will want to ensure you have adequate room when merging or getting up to speed since it will take a while for the engine to spool out its 122hp. Flooring it is really the only mild Achilles' Heel of the Versa. The Nissan Versa's engine performs well at high speeds and low speeds, with no noticeable struggle. Nissan has done an excellent job tuning the engine. The car is surprisingly quiet on the highway, with only a little wind noise. This level of quietness rivals that of luxury cars like the Lexus RX and Chrysler 300. It's worth noting that the Versa is quieter than both the Lexus ES 350 and RX 350. The only downside is that the engine is slow to accelerate, and it would benefit from a more powerful engine. Additionally, there was a noticeable rattling from the plastic cage surrounding the Nissan Safety Shield front-facing camera on the windshield, which can be fixed by the dealership. Overall, the Nissan Versa is a great car that outperforms the Sentra in every way.

I had an issue with my 2020 Nissan Versa regarding the Forward Emergency Brake system. While driving on the highway, the light for the sensor suddenly appeared on the dashboard for no apparent reason. After taking it to Anderson Nissan in Lake Havasu, AZ, they confirmed that the bracket holding the sensor was misaligned. Despite their claim that it was caused by an impact, I found it hard to accept as there were no signs of impact damage on the front bumper. Furthermore, as this device is essential for safety, it should have been placed in a secure location. Despite my concerns, Anderson Nissan informed me that the warranty would not cover the cost of repair. As safety is a primary concern for me, I decided to pay $1923.96 for the repair. While I feel that I was not treated fairly in this situation, I am confident in my decision to prioritize safety. The pictures were only shown to me after the bumper was removed without my knowledge. It is possible that they fabricated the whole thing since I was not present. Despite my pleas to Anderson Nissan and Nissan Consumer Affairs for a refund, my requests fell on deaf ears. Unfortunately, I am unable to upload the pictures here. This entire situation is absurd.

Before buying a Nissan, it's important to do your research. Unfortunately, I have had a negative experience with my Nissan and have had several issues with it. However, I understand that every car brand has its own set of issues. It's important to note that Nissan dealerships and the company itself may not always be able to help with issues, but this is not unique to Nissan. I recommend considering other car brands such as Toyota, Honda, Ford, Mazda, or BMW. Thank you for considering my experience and advice.

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you've had this car for a couple of months now. I remember when I had it, I was really into going to the Galveston beach at the time. I did notice that when I would hit 80 on the highway, the engine seemed a bit weak and I was worried it might jump out. However, it's great for simple driving around town or for someone who drives very gently, like a young girl or grandma. It's on the smaller side, but it was still able to fit my 6'3 ex-boyfriend at the time.

During the two weeks that I rented a brand new car, I noticed some areas that could be improved. Specifically, I found the seats to be uncomfortable and the controls to be cheaply made. Additionally, the heater was not up to par. While the car drove fine, it did feel like some corners had been cut during its production. Overall, I would not personally consider purchasing this car.
