According to a Nissan press release in 2008, "versa" is short for "versatile space" meant to imply the spaciousness of the interior and configurable cargo arrangements. The Versa is one of the few remaining subcompact cars left on sale in the North American market, with most automakers dropping small cars from their lineups to focus on crossovers and SUVs.

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2023 Nissan Versa, several common problems have been highlighted:

  • Catalytic Converter Concerns: Another common complaint involves the catalytic converter, which has caused some cars to fail, leading to engine issues and stalling after warning lights come on. This problem typically affects models with high mileage, usually over 100,000 kilometers.
  • Power Loss and P2615 Code: Some owners have experienced power loss while driving, with engines stalling. This issue has led to a federal safety investigation, indicating a potential widespread problem with the 2022-2024 Versa models.
  • Transmission Performance: Complaints have been raised about the manual transmission, with some owners mentioning issues related to acceleration, stability at higher speeds, and concerns about the overall driving experience.
  • Interior Quality: Owners have expressed dissatisfaction with the interior quality of the Nissan Versa, highlighting cheap plastic materials, a basic audio system, and a lack of premium features.
  • CVT Performance: With the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), some owners have reported engine droning during acceleration, merging, and passing maneuvers, which can be perceived as annoying.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-18
  • VIN: 3N1CN8BV0PL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: I stalled my vehicle (5-speed manual) in a drive through. I quickly restarted the vehicle and proceeded through. When I pulled out onto the main road my car had no power. There was nowhere safe to pull over so I had to continue. My car would not accelerate above 20mph and even that was extremely hard. I had to downshift to 1st gear to proceed up the hill. Finally, I was able to pull off and restart my car. This fixed the issue and I was able to drive home. I’ve not stalled the car before so I had never experienced this issue. I’ve read about it, and having it happen is terrifying. Had the car who was driving behind me been going faster, I likely would have been hit when I pulled out of the drive through. This is extremely dangerous.

Eventually car stopped moving and this happened on the highway while I was driving normally and then it slowed down and then stopped. This happened before about 5 months ago and I turned car off and it drove again so didn't think of an issue until today when it happened again and didn't move. I had to wait 2hrs for a tow to the Nissan Dealer for service in the morning.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-05
  • VIN: 3N1CN8BV7PL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: I was taking my 23 versa M/T to the dealer for its 10.000 mile service and upon driving the vehicle while pulling away from a stop sign I stall the vehicle and after that there was a significant loss of power, restarting the engine did not help. When I got to the dealership I did not shut the engine off and told them about the issue and said it was a safety issue and did not have the power to get out of the way in a emergencysituation. Unfortunately they claimed they could not duplicate the issue and requested to hold the vehicle for further investigation. Before the vehicle le was stalled there were no warning lamps or check engine lights or any symptoms prior nor any warning lamps on the wa to the dealership while the issue consisted. This problem has happened twice before while my wife was on the way to work and after her shift the vehicle preformed normal.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-31
  • VIN: 3N1CN8BV7PL
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Multiple incidents where car has failed to accelerate properly. When it happened this morning, I was in the vicinity of the dealership. Foreman mechanic road-tested vehicle with me, and back at Nissan my car put out the engine code P2615-00 camshaft posi signal B1...I was told this is a known concern on manual transmission Versa vehicles that is "being looked into by engineering." On a previous visit to the dealership about this problem, I was told that the acceleration problem could have been caused by bugs covering the front crash sensor! Anyway, on a couple occasions, when merging into traffic, this problem was dangerous..I've resorted to my emergency blinkers a couple times....Then, upon being able to pull over, I shut off the car, and when I re-start the vehicle it runs like a champ again.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-10
  • VIN: 3N1CN8BV7PL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: If you stall the car, upon restart there is a great degree of power loss. It seems like it's the VDC system turned up to the max, where it's limiting engine power, and applying the brakes. It makes the car much slower and difficult to get up to speed. This can cause a safety risk as it causes the car to perform unpredictably. When this happens, in order to reset the system and make it work normal, I need to turn the car off, get out, close the door, then get back in and turn it back on. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? I suspect it has something to do with the ECU/VDC system How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? If I need to get out of the way of something, or need to get up to speed on the highway, in any of those scenarios it could put me at risk. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Not that I know of, but I haven't taken it to the dealer regarding this issue yet. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Not that I know of Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-23
  • VIN: 3N1CN8BV6PL
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: This vehicle is a manual transmission model. If the engine is stalled on takeoff and has to be restarted it enters a low power condition where acceleration is severely reduced. The power loss is bad enough to make it impossible to keep up with traffic. Even maintaining speed while climbing hills is difficult. This is dangerous because moving much more slowly than surrounding traffic makes this car a collision risk. The low power condition continues until the vehicle is turned off and the key is removed. The MIL light has come on and the DTC is P2615. We have scheduled to take the vehicle for service tomorrow, but it hasn't been seen by a technician yet.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-18
  • VIN: 3N1CN8BV4PL
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: 2023 Nissan Versa S has manual transmission. Car will intermittently lose acceleration. When this problem starts, car is unable to go over 30mph in any gear and even with the accelerator pedal pushed to the floor. This has occurred 5 times so far. Sudden loss of speed creates a life threatening situation when driving on a highway and speeds of 65 mph are expected. The car will suddenly drop to 30mph or lower without any warning and will not accelerate. Problem is not fixed by restarting the engine. Car was taken to Premier Nissan of Fremont, California on 10/20/23. They reported: 2560 did not verify customer concern. Road tested with additional technician, drove vehicle in every gear from 1-5 5mph to 65 mph. Also down shifted from there and no hesitation or loss of power was felt. Vehicle moves fine in all gears. All ok at this time. Car was returned to me on 10/24/23. GPS locator on car indicates that car was always parked at dealership for the 4 days and not driven. I connected a OBD code reader to the car's port and it reports Camshaft Position Error but Premier Nissan of Fremont, California refused to take that input saying they did not want to influence their technician. After the "no-problem" diagnosis they stated that they do not see any history of issues on their NISSAN supplied OBD reader. Hence the car has no problem. I am fearful of driving it on the freeway and loosing acceleration which will result in me getting rear ended and killed!!!

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-30
  • VIN: 3N1CN8BV6PL
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: After I stalled the engine in a fast food drive through I restarted the car. When I went to take off the engine had no power and took a very long time to get up to speed throughout the gear selection. I was almost rear ended because of this. The car did not throw any check engine lights or dash codes. I got home and turned off the car. It sat for about 10 minutes then I test drove it around the block and it was fine.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-13
  • VIN: 3N1CN8BV2PL
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: 2023 Versa occasionally loses power. Though the gas pedal is pressed to the floor, and despite downshifting, the car continues to lose power. This has happened about four times since car was purchased new in June 2023. Turning cart off and restarting may or may not interrupt the power loss. ~What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? We are not sure what is malfunctioning, and yes, it may be inspected upon request. ~How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Loss of power means others may hit our vehicle, not knowing we are losing power. We may not be able to move out of a dangerous traffic situation. ~Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Dealer appointment has been scheduled for almost three weeks after requested (long wait for potentially dangerous problem). ~Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No. ~ Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Warning light came on one time, but went off before it could be read. On 13 Sep 2023 - WARNING MESSAGE read-out: P2615

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-14
  • VIN: 3N1CN8BV9PL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My 2023 Nissan Versa S5MT has a reoccurring issue where under a stall condition the car will occasionally loose all power on a restart. This happened once in traffic. I got to a red light and fumbled the clutch pedal and stalled in stopped traffic. I went to get in front of a semi that was moving faster then me and if I didn't realize what happened I may have cut him off and gotten T-boned. In a 2500lb car like the Versa, that could have killed me. I have taken the vehicle to the dealership and they failed to replicate the issue. There were no symptoms or warnings prior to the failure. Many others have claimed this issue exists with their 2023 Nissan Versas and also claimed the dealership could not fix theirs.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-18
  • VIN: 3N1CN8BV9PL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: Car is 4 months old 12,000 miles. 3 intermittent episodes upon startup car has only 20% power even with gas pedal to the floor like it’s in limp home mode. All episodes so far on cold start up 60-80 degree weather. No CEL lights, no misfire, no odd smells. YouTube poster has same problem and ran obd scan tool showing crank position sensor malfunction. Others suspect problem is software issue associated with Nissan removing the push button start from Versa S trim level only cars in 2022/2023 model years and possibly in manual transmission cars only. Car is extremely unsafe to drive in this condition and the female owner is reluctant to drive it 50 miles to work and be stranded. Nissan dealer examined the car and found no issues on first attempt. Car going to the repair shop for a second time.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-27
  • VIN: 3N1CN8BV3PL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: My car stalled while backing up in heavy gravel. I started out and did not notice that my car was not accelerating. I pulled out into a 65 mph road and began shifting and realized my car was not accelerating. It was a road where pulling over was dangerous. I found an area and turn the car off. I restarted (fixed it when 1st occurrence happened). Got back on the road and again my car was not accelerating above 25-30 mph. Pulled out off the road shut the car off and waited 2-3 minutes and again restarted and the car resumed working properly. This was extremely dangerous due to the road not having safe pull outs. This is the second time this has occurred in my new car.

Negative 2023 Nissan Versa car reviews

  1. Lorenzo Olson 2024-11-29

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you've had this car for a couple of months now. I remember when I had it, I was really into going to the Galveston beach at the time. I did notice that when I would hit 80 on the highway, the engine seemed a bit weak and I was worried it might jump out. However, it's great for simple driving around town or for someone who drives very gently, like a young girl or grandma. It's on the smaller side, but it was still able to fit my 6'3 ex-boyfriend at the time.

  2. Hillard Kessler 2024-10-28

Before buying a Nissan, it's important to do your research. Unfortunately, I have had a negative experience with my Nissan and have had several issues with it. However, I understand that every car brand has its own set of issues. It's important to note that Nissan dealerships and the company itself may not always be able to help with issues, but this is not unique to Nissan. I recommend considering other car brands such as Toyota, Honda, Ford, Mazda, or BMW. Thank you for considering my experience and advice.

  3. Raphael Smitham 2024-10-26

The 2021 Versa could use some improvements in terms of comfort and handling. The lack of armrests on the driver and passenger seats can be inconvenient, and the seats themselves are on the smaller side and not very comfortable. Additionally, the car can be a bit challenging to handle at times, especially on the highway. However, with some adjustments, it could be a decent car. Safety is always a top priority, so it's important to take precautions when driving any vehicle.

  4. Ford Leannon 2024-10-23

During the two weeks that I rented a brand new car, I noticed some areas that could be improved. Specifically, I found the seats to be uncomfortable and the controls to be cheaply made. Additionally, the heater was very poor. While the car drove okay, it felt like some corners had been cut during its production. Overall, I would not consider purchasing this car.

  5. Adriel Kohler 2024-09-25

It seems like you may be experiencing some issues with your device. Specifically, you mentioned that there is not enough space, there aren't enough accessories, and it's running slowly. Let's work together to find a solution to these problems.

Positive 2023 Nissan Versa car reviews

  1. Zander Wolf 2025-01-22

I researched this car extensively before purchasing it. I opted for the fully loaded SR model and I am absolutely in love with the technology features such as Android Audio, blind spot monitoring, and sensors. The car provides a very nimble ride and I am able to achieve 41 mpg when driving between 70-75 mph, and an impressive 50 mpg when driving at 60 mph. The seats are incredibly comfortable and the sound system is top-notch. In my opinion, this car is the best deal available on the market.

  2. Pierre Kautzer 2025-01-19

It's not always easy to find the right product, but with all the consumer ratings available, this one has definitely lived up to its reputation. I really appreciate all the safety features it offers, too!

  3. Andrew Greenholt 2025-01-14

This car has a great driving experience, but unfortunately, there is an issue with the gas gauge and mileage. Despite having taken the car back to the dealership twice, the problem persists. However, I am confident that the dealership will be able to resolve the issue during my upcoming visit. I believe that Nissan should take responsibility for this recurring problem and provide a permanent solution. I am considering exploring the Lemon Law if the issue is not resolved. Despite this issue, the car has only 7,900 miles on it and has been well-maintained since I bought it new in July 2020.

  4. Isac Swift 2024-11-16

I rented a Nissan Versa because my children wanted it, and it was actually amazing! It was better than my old car, and it could seat the exact amount of passengers I needed it to!

  5. Alvis Gaylord 2024-11-05

The car is a bit small in size and the driver side door requires some extra power to close. It runs well under the speed of 70. I noticed that the prices for this car range from 15 to 17 thousand dollars, but the Nissan dealership offered me a price of $19,525.00 before tax and title. Despite this, I still believe that it is better to invest a little more and purchase a bigger and more comfortable car.
