Nissan Murano problems

The Nissan Murano (Japanese: 日産・ムラーノ, Hepburn: Nissan Murāno) is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Nissan since May 2002 for the 2003 model year, and currently in its third generation.

As Nissan's first crossover SUV for the United States and Canada, the Murano was designed at Nissan America in La Jolla, California, and was based on the Nissan FF-L platform shared with the third generation Altima. The European version of the Murano began sales in 2004.

The Murano was Nissan's only crossover SUV in the United States until September 2007, when the Rogue went on sale. In Canada, the X-Trail had been on sale as Nissan's second car based SUV since 2004 as a model for 2005; it was replaced by the 2008 Rogue at the end of 2007. The Murano is sized between the Pathfinder and the now defunct Xterra (which was replaced by the Rogue as a compact SUV). A convertible variant, the Murano CrossCabriolet, was available for the second-generation model for the model years of 2011 to 2014.

The nameplate Murano derives from the Italian islands of Murano and the namesake Murano art glass for which the islands are widely known.

Common Nissan Murano problems

The Nissan Murano, a midsize SUV produced by Nissan, has been praised for its attractive design and impressive lighting elements. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of issues. Here are three of the most common problems reported by Nissan Murano owners:

  • Failing engine mounts causing thumping in the floor: More than 180 Nissan Murano owners have reported this issue, which typically arises around 96,000 miles. The sound comes from the engine moving too much, indicating that the engine mounts have failed and need to be replaced.
  • Damaged seat adjuster assembly causing noise/rocking movement: Over 140 Nissan Murano owners have reported this problem, which generally appears after 84,000 miles. The damaged seat adjuster assembly can cause the seat to rock back and forth, squeak, or stop adjusting forward, backward, up, or down.
  • Air intake tube on the air cleaner box becoming loose: Nearly 40 Nissan Murano owners have reported this issue, which typically arises around 84,000 miles. This problem is related to a recall for 2003 to 2007 models of the Murano, where the air cleaner box or tube can come loose. If your Murano falls within this model year range and has this issue, the repair should be covered by Nissan.

These issues can affect the reliability and overall satisfaction of Nissan Murano owners. It is essential to consider these common problems when considering purchasing a used Murano. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or address these issues, ensuring a more reliable and enjoyable driving experience.

  • Summary: My sunroof exploded but I don't know why. There was no warning. Might have been a rock but I didn't see one. I had the sunroof closed but the fabric cover was open for light. I heard an explosive noise and then glass started raining in. I closed the fabric cover to keep the glass out of the passenger compartment. No real injuries other than a couple of glass shards being sharp. Mostly just got some skin irritation. Some areas on my car have scratched paint and plastic parts. I had my Nissan dealer look at it. They will clean up the glass and replace the sunroof for about $2000. I feel like it should be replaced for free as a warranty item. I also got an estimate from a collision shop for about $7500. There is scratched paint and plastic as well as the headliner certainly has glass in it. Their estimate was much more detailed. Filed an insurance claim today, so hope to have it all fixed up soon.

Nissan is recalling more than 56,000 cars because of power-steering hoses that may leak fluid and potentially lead to fires. Nissan North America said the recall affects the 2013-2014 Murano vehicles. The problem stems from the power-steering hose clamp, which may not adequately secure the hose. That could allow the hose to detach and leak power-steering fluid, the company said. Power-steering fluid leaking onto a hot engine or exhaust pipes could cause a fire, Nissan said.

Latest negative Nissan Murano car reviews

  1. Abelardo Abshire 2025-09-11

    Vehicle year: 2016

My husband and I purchased a brand new 2016 Nissan Murano hybrid PLATINUM edition with all the bells and whistles on 1-31-2016. Unfortunately, we experienced some issues with the vehicle shortly after purchasing it. While driving, I noticed a burning smell and heard a loud electronic warning noise, but there were no warnings on the screens to indicate what the issue might be. Although the dealership was unable to recreate the issue, they were able to fix a problem with the hood latch. Recently, the same issue occurred again, but this time my husband was able to capture it on video. We will be showing the dealership the video to help diagnose the issue. Additionally, we have noticed that our average MPG is lower than expected, despite driving mostly on the freeway. As a cautious driver with a newborn, I am concerned about the safety of my family. We hope to work with the dealership to resolve these issues in a friendly and cooperative manner. Why pay more for a hybrid if it doesn't give you better gas mileage? I paid top dollar for a fully loaded vehicle to ensure my family's safety, but unfortunately, it has been nothing but a headache so far. Despite these issues, I love everything else about it - the comfort, the fantastic tech package, and the amazing look. However, these issues are huge deal breakers. We usually purchase from Infiniti and now regret using their sister company. The service and vehicle have been much less than what we are used to and expect. I don't usually write reviews unless I have a superior or horrible experience, but people need to know about these issues, especially because there isn't much information online about this new car. I'm hopeful that they can figure out what is wrong because I want to love this car. Other than that, the car is beautiful and comfortable.

  2. Felipe Lindgren 2025-09-09

    Vehicle year: 2007

I bought my 2007 Nissan Murano last April and unfortunately, I've had to put well over $5,000 into it. The transmission failed just after the warranty expired, which was frustrating. I was disappointed to learn that I didn't qualify for a discount since I wasn't the original owner of the car. I've been experiencing a number of other issues as well, which has been challenging to keep up with. While I'm not thrilled with the car, I'm committed to driving it until it's no longer feasible. If you're considering purchasing this car, I would advise against it if it has close to 100k miles on it. It's been a bit of a rough ride after that point.

  3. Ernesto Kutch 2025-09-09

    Vehicle year: 2011

I am sorry to hear about the issues you faced with your 2010 Nissan Murano, SL, AWD. It must have been frustrating to deal with the transmission oil leak and the runaround from Lee Nissan in Topsham, Maine. It is understandable that you were disappointed with the repairs and the cost you had to bear. I appreciate you sharing your experience, and I hope you find a reliable car that meets your needs in the future.

  4. Jeremie Osinski 2025-09-08

    Vehicle year: 2003

The 2003 Nissan Murano is experiencing difficulty reaching speeds over 65 mph on the highway, with the engine revving excessively and emitting concerning sounds. Despite having an extended warranty, it remains unclear whether the issue is covered or not. Despite visiting both a Nissan Dealer and a Carmax dealer, neither have been able to diagnose the problem. Further input on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

At 40,000 miles, the transmission of my wife's car suddenly failed while she was driving our grandson to daycare. Despite the inconvenience of being stranded on a dark highway with no street lights, we remained confident that the dealership would resolve the issue. The car has been at the dealership for over a week now, and we are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new transmission, which is projected to be ready next week. Although we are currently paying $200 a week for a rental car, we are confident that Nissan will honor their warranty and cover the cost of the rental car. We remain optimistic that this issue will be resolved soon.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I completely understand your concerns about fuel mileage, but I'm so glad to hear that you found a perfect fit with the Murano! It sounds like it's been a great choice for you and your family, especially with the Colorado winters. I'm happy to hear that it rides so smoothly and quietly, and that you're enjoying the driving experience. Plus, the gas mileage is a huge plus! Thanks for sharing your positive experience with the Murano!

I bought my 2011 Murano used with 27,000 miles and now have 42,000 miles on it. It replaced our beloved 2001 Infiniti Qx4 and while it's not exactly the same, it's pretty close. I'm very happy with the ride, looks, and reliability so far. The mileage is okay at 20 overall. The car is solid with no rattles and has a firm yet comfortable ride. We did have a popping noise in the back which we finally tracked to the woofer in the radio. Instead of replacing the radio for $800, we had the woofer disconnected for $120. We did have to replace the battery early on as the car was dead three times in two weeks. We finally realized that we were leaving the ignition on 'accessory' by mistake. It's a bad design because if you hit the ignition button twice when you shut off the car, it goes to 'accessory' with no indication whatsoever on the dash. I'm very careful now and always tell anyone who borrows the vehicle to be sure and just pop the ignition button once when they are shutting it off. I cannot believe the engineers at Nissan didn't catch this. Another reviewer here noted that he had to replace his battery twice, and this may have been the culprit. I'll take keys any day over this keyless stuff. An update as of 5/1/17: I now have 53,000 miles on it and still have no issues. However, I have been stranded three times since my last review because I am hard of hearing and do not hear the warning when I leave the vehicle in 'accessory' when I get out. The battery goes dead within two hours. Two complaints: why doesn't the system just shut down like my wife's LaCrosse to avoid a dead battery (and whose car I hear every warning, buzz, chime, etc.)? Two, why not make the warning as annoying and low pitched for us old guys who can't hear? These reasons alone will likely keep me from buying another Murano, unless I can hear the chimes. I recognize that I am part idiot for not making sure the vehicle is off when I get out. If anyone has a fix for this, please chime in.

I've never written a review before on any website, but I'm so incredibly pleased with my 2015 Murano SL that I wanted to share my thoughts. I hope what I have to say helps you in your decision. When I was researching which car to buy, I looked at different brands, but at the end of the day, I decided to stay with Nissan because I had such good luck with my last car, a Nissan Altima. My new purchase was between the Murano and the Maxima, and I ultimately chose the Murano because I wanted a smaller SUV. And let me tell you, it's awesome! The exterior is super stylish, and the interior is luxurious. The seats have memory foam in them and are very comfortable, the cabin is spacious, and the car has every gadget you can think of, all at your fingertips. The cargo area in the back is plenty spacious, even if you travel. The back seats recline as well as fold down, and there are USB ports in the front and the back, which is nice. You have memory seating for up to two people, auto start, which is so nice in the winter time, and the back hatch auto lifts. There are even extra secret storage compartments in the cargo area, and the seats are heated/cooled. The ride is so smooth, and I've been getting 26 MPG, despite what some reviews said about the gas mileage. I looked at a lot of higher-end cars, like the Lexus 350, ACURA MDX, RDX, and BMW 3, and in my opinion, this car out beats all of them in the interior. It matches all of the cars plus some. If I did have to say anything negative, it would be two very minor things.Cup holders in the front, I wish one was a little bigger than the other, and the visor, I wish it had the extender. However, everything else is fabulous! While this car may not be cheap and is on the higher end, if you can afford it, I highly recommend going with the Nissan Murano. You will not be disappointed. Best of luck with your purchase!

We bought a 2020 Murano Platinum. The ride is fantastic and the amenities are luxurious. The air conditioned and heated seats are a definite plus! The BOSE speaker system is the best I've ever heard. Overall, the comfort is perfect. We absolutely love our top model Murano!
