Nissan Murano problems

The Nissan Murano (Japanese: 日産・ムラーノ, Hepburn: Nissan Murāno) is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Nissan since May 2002 for the 2003 model year, and currently in its third generation.

As Nissan's first crossover SUV for the United States and Canada, the Murano was designed at Nissan America in La Jolla, California, and was based on the Nissan FF-L platform shared with the third generation Altima. The European version of the Murano began sales in 2004.

The Murano was Nissan's only crossover SUV in the United States until September 2007, when the Rogue went on sale. In Canada, the X-Trail had been on sale as Nissan's second car based SUV since 2004 as a model for 2005; it was replaced by the 2008 Rogue at the end of 2007. The Murano is sized between the Pathfinder and the now defunct Xterra (which was replaced by the Rogue as a compact SUV). A convertible variant, the Murano CrossCabriolet, was available for the second-generation model for the model years of 2011 to 2014.

The nameplate Murano derives from the Italian islands of Murano and the namesake Murano art glass for which the islands are widely known.

Common Nissan Murano problems

The Nissan Murano, a midsize SUV produced by Nissan, has been praised for its attractive design and impressive lighting elements. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of issues. Here are three of the most common problems reported by Nissan Murano owners:

  • Failing engine mounts causing thumping in the floor: More than 180 Nissan Murano owners have reported this issue, which typically arises around 96,000 miles. The sound comes from the engine moving too much, indicating that the engine mounts have failed and need to be replaced.
  • Damaged seat adjuster assembly causing noise/rocking movement: Over 140 Nissan Murano owners have reported this problem, which generally appears after 84,000 miles. The damaged seat adjuster assembly can cause the seat to rock back and forth, squeak, or stop adjusting forward, backward, up, or down.
  • Air intake tube on the air cleaner box becoming loose: Nearly 40 Nissan Murano owners have reported this issue, which typically arises around 84,000 miles. This problem is related to a recall for 2003 to 2007 models of the Murano, where the air cleaner box or tube can come loose. If your Murano falls within this model year range and has this issue, the repair should be covered by Nissan.

These issues can affect the reliability and overall satisfaction of Nissan Murano owners. It is essential to consider these common problems when considering purchasing a used Murano. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or address these issues, ensuring a more reliable and enjoyable driving experience.

  • Summary: My sunroof exploded but I don't know why. There was no warning. Might have been a rock but I didn't see one. I had the sunroof closed but the fabric cover was open for light. I heard an explosive noise and then glass started raining in. I closed the fabric cover to keep the glass out of the passenger compartment. No real injuries other than a couple of glass shards being sharp. Mostly just got some skin irritation. Some areas on my car have scratched paint and plastic parts. I had my Nissan dealer look at it. They will clean up the glass and replace the sunroof for about $2000. I feel like it should be replaced for free as a warranty item. I also got an estimate from a collision shop for about $7500. There is scratched paint and plastic as well as the headliner certainly has glass in it. Their estimate was much more detailed. Filed an insurance claim today, so hope to have it all fixed up soon.

Nissan is recalling more than 56,000 cars because of power-steering hoses that may leak fluid and potentially lead to fires. Nissan North America said the recall affects the 2013-2014 Murano vehicles. The problem stems from the power-steering hose clamp, which may not adequately secure the hose. That could allow the hose to detach and leak power-steering fluid, the company said. Power-steering fluid leaking onto a hot engine or exhaust pipes could cause a fire, Nissan said.

Latest negative Nissan Murano car reviews

  1. Lester West 2025-03-27

    Vehicle year: 2004

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2004 Murano SL AWD that I purchased back in 2008 with only 34K miles. At the time of purchase, I also opted for an extended warranty for 7/100000 and had all of my services performed at the Nissan dealership. While under warranty, a few items were fixed, including the driver seat (a known problem), 2 engine mounts, an oil gasket, and a tire rod. Recently, at 102K miles, I had to replace an engine seal for $300. During a fuel consumption test, it was detected that the engine was burning 1 qt of oil every 1K miles. Unfortunately, last week, I had to tow my Murano to the dealership because the rear differential disintegrated. The cost to fix it was $2300. However, when the dealer replaced the rear differential, they noticed that the transfer case was also ruined, which brought the total cost of repair to $3500. While this was a frustrating experience, I wanted to share it with you so that you can make an informed decision. Thanks for listening!

  2. Jaden Kirlin 2025-03-25

    Vehicle year: 2003

I recently purchased an 03 Murano with 62k miles on it. It's a beautiful car with lots of features and pretty good MPG. Unfortunately, within a month or two, I experienced an issue commonly referred to as the 'bunny hop.' In stop-and-go traffic, I noticed that the acceleration was sluggish and unresponsive after each complete stop, creeping along at a couple of mph. However, after reading other reviews, I realized that I am not alone in experiencing this issue. While it was concerning, I ultimately decided to part ways with my beloved Murano due to safety concerns. It's important to prioritize safety on the road and I encourage others to do the same.

  3. Julian Quigley 2025-03-25

    Vehicle year: 2004

At 72,000 miles, the transfer case cracked, resulting in a $4,100 repair. It is unacceptable for a vehicle of this caliber to require such a costly repair before reaching 100,000 miles. Nissan's customer service was unhelpful and condescending. As a result, I have decided to never purchase a Nissan vehicle again. This is the second time I have purchased a lemon from Nissan, and I am thoroughly disappointed. Despite issuing a technical service bulletin on how to fix the transfer case, Nissan failed to issue a recall. It is important for companies to prioritize building customer relationships, as repeat customers are what keep businesses thriving. Nissan should take note of this before it's too late.

  4. Hugh Schultz 2025-03-23

    Vehicle year: 2022

At just 13k miles, my 2020 Murano experienced a serious issue where it would not go in park or reverse. Despite having a warranty that covers towing, we were disappointed to find no assistance locally at the dealer or with the towing number. This is unacceptable. The mechanic at Nissan confirmed that an all new gear assembly is required, which is concerning and has left me questioning the reliability of this car. Moving forward, I hope that Nissan can provide a more accessible emergency towing number without the need for a computer. As a result of this experience, I am hesitant to purchase another Nissan vehicle. It is clear that improvements need to be made to ensure customer satisfaction and safety.

At 150,000 miles, my car began to experience issues with shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, which required a new transmission costing $4,000. Despite owning several cars with over 150,000 miles, I have never encountered this issue before. The check engine light has also been on for almost 2 years, and I was informed that it is a defect with the gas tank. This experience has led me to decide not to purchase another Nissan in the future.

I test drove several mid-size SUV/Crossovers and initially did not consider the Murano due to its unconventional appearance, often referred to as a 'moon mobile'. However, after reading positive reviews on Edmunds and CR, I decided to give it a chance. I stopped at the Nissan dealership next to the Toyota dealer and took the Murano for a spin before heading home. To my surprise, my impression of the Murano changed immediately! After trying out all of the other options, I can confidently say that the Murano's driving dynamics are wonderful and the interior is on par with an Infiniti. It's no wonder why Murano owners are so loyal. I have come to appreciate it more and more, especially the smooth CVT!!

We recently purchased an SV front-wheel drive and traded in our 2005 Toyota Matrix. We have been thoroughly impressed with the vehicle, especially with only 3000 miles on it. The interior is upscale and boasts excellent fit and finish. The motor is strong and reliable. One of the best features of this vehicle is its CVT transmission, which is often a weak point in other cars. Unlike other vehicles with a CVT, the Murano's drivetrain is quiet and responsive, providing a smooth ride. The car is spacious and comfortable, with tilt-back rear seats and a dual sunroof. We have been getting great gas mileage, averaging 25-27 mpg on the highway.

I've owned my 2018 Murano SL for 20 months and my wife and I absolutely love it! The front seats are incredibly comfortable and easy to adjust, making long drives of 5 or 6 hours feel effortless. The interior is beautifully finished and has a luxurious feel to it. The back seat is roomy and a plus is that the back seats partially recline, providing extra comfort. Leg room both in the front and back is generous, and even our 400-pound friend finds it easy to get into the front seat and says that it's a comfortable ride. We really like the unique exterior styling, which sets the car apart from the run-of-the-mill SUVs. The cargo space is adequate for our family, and while the rear/side vision is a bit limited, the blind spot warning and the 360 camera system make up for it. The vehicle handles well with good acceleration. Overall, we really enjoy the Murano.

I fell in love with my 2003 Nissan Murano at first sight and test drive due to its quirky styling and overall feel. However, as time passed, it started to cost more in repairs each time I took it in. So, I started looking around for the next car to fall in love with. Unfortunately, I hated the next generations of Muranos. But in December, I received an email from Nissan to check out the 2015 Murano. I fell in love with it at first glimpse and resolved that if the test drive was as good as the first impression, this would be my next car. When my old Murano went back in for service, we decided to buy a new car. The 2015 Murano looked as good, if not better in real life and the test drive was the closer. As of September 2017, I still love my Murano. Although I wish it had a lane straying indicator, I am happy with the

As the owner, I may be biased, but I'd like to share my opinion on the car. Let me start with the redesigned style. Some reviews online have called it ugly, but I disagree. The black platinum with the 20 inch rims is a head turner. From the side, it reminds me of a Lexus RX 350. Even though it's not considered a luxury vehicle, the platinum model is sleek on the inside. The leather seats are extremely comfortable, and I have enough space when seated in the back. The front seats are heated and cooled, and the back seats are heated. The technology inside is great, with a rear view camera and cameras on the side mirrors with a birds-eye view. The technology on the dash is simple to use. The cargo space is sufficient and the back row goes down with the push of a button. The sliding moon roof is a great feature for the summer. However, there are a few cons about the inside. The glove box is a little weird, and the cup holders aren't the biggest. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase.Another issue I encountered was with outward visibility. Although the sensors on the left and right were helpful, I found myself wishing for a better view of the cars surrounding me. In terms of performance, this vehicle may not be the best fit for those seeking a sporty ride. Acceleration is not the greatest and the 20 inch rims may not be the best option for making sharp turns. I did not test the models with smaller rims, so I cannot speak to their turning capabilities. However, the ride is incredibly smooth and comfortable, making it a great choice for those prioritizing comfort. While the MPG may be slightly less than advertised, I still get a respectable 18-19 MPG in the city. When you factor in taxes, title, and everything else, I believe that $40k is a very reasonable price for a fully loaded platinum. Some may argue that it is overpriced for a Nissan, but when you consider all of the features, it is actually quite reasonable. While it may not be an Acura, Lexus, or Infiniti, it is certainly the next best thing when you don't have an extra 15-20k to spend. Please note that I have not yet had the opportunity to assess maintenance costs, repair frequency, and other factors. I will update this review with additional details as they become available.
