Nissan Murano problems

The Nissan Murano (Japanese: 日産・ムラーノ, Hepburn: Nissan Murāno) is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Nissan since May 2002 for the 2003 model year, and currently in its third generation.

As Nissan's first crossover SUV for the United States and Canada, the Murano was designed at Nissan America in La Jolla, California, and was based on the Nissan FF-L platform shared with the third generation Altima. The European version of the Murano began sales in 2004.

The Murano was Nissan's only crossover SUV in the United States until September 2007, when the Rogue went on sale. In Canada, the X-Trail had been on sale as Nissan's second car based SUV since 2004 as a model for 2005; it was replaced by the 2008 Rogue at the end of 2007. The Murano is sized between the Pathfinder and the now defunct Xterra (which was replaced by the Rogue as a compact SUV). A convertible variant, the Murano CrossCabriolet, was available for the second-generation model for the model years of 2011 to 2014.

The nameplate Murano derives from the Italian islands of Murano and the namesake Murano art glass for which the islands are widely known.

Common Nissan Murano problems

The Nissan Murano, a midsize SUV produced by Nissan, has been praised for its attractive design and impressive lighting elements. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of issues. Here are three of the most common problems reported by Nissan Murano owners:

  • Failing engine mounts causing thumping in the floor: More than 180 Nissan Murano owners have reported this issue, which typically arises around 96,000 miles. The sound comes from the engine moving too much, indicating that the engine mounts have failed and need to be replaced.
  • Damaged seat adjuster assembly causing noise/rocking movement: Over 140 Nissan Murano owners have reported this problem, which generally appears after 84,000 miles. The damaged seat adjuster assembly can cause the seat to rock back and forth, squeak, or stop adjusting forward, backward, up, or down.
  • Air intake tube on the air cleaner box becoming loose: Nearly 40 Nissan Murano owners have reported this issue, which typically arises around 84,000 miles. This problem is related to a recall for 2003 to 2007 models of the Murano, where the air cleaner box or tube can come loose. If your Murano falls within this model year range and has this issue, the repair should be covered by Nissan.

These issues can affect the reliability and overall satisfaction of Nissan Murano owners. It is essential to consider these common problems when considering purchasing a used Murano. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or address these issues, ensuring a more reliable and enjoyable driving experience.

  • Summary: My sunroof exploded but I don't know why. There was no warning. Might have been a rock but I didn't see one. I had the sunroof closed but the fabric cover was open for light. I heard an explosive noise and then glass started raining in. I closed the fabric cover to keep the glass out of the passenger compartment. No real injuries other than a couple of glass shards being sharp. Mostly just got some skin irritation. Some areas on my car have scratched paint and plastic parts. I had my Nissan dealer look at it. They will clean up the glass and replace the sunroof for about $2000. I feel like it should be replaced for free as a warranty item. I also got an estimate from a collision shop for about $7500. There is scratched paint and plastic as well as the headliner certainly has glass in it. Their estimate was much more detailed. Filed an insurance claim today, so hope to have it all fixed up soon.

Nissan is recalling more than 56,000 cars because of power-steering hoses that may leak fluid and potentially lead to fires. Nissan North America said the recall affects the 2013-2014 Murano vehicles. The problem stems from the power-steering hose clamp, which may not adequately secure the hose. That could allow the hose to detach and leak power-steering fluid, the company said. Power-steering fluid leaking onto a hot engine or exhaust pipes could cause a fire, Nissan said.

Latest negative Nissan Murano car reviews

  1. Vincent Weimann 2025-01-09

    Vehicle year: 2005

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my '05 SL 2WD. I've had it since it arrived off the boat in October 2005 and it currently has 132,000 miles. This is the first time I've ever kept a vehicle over 75,000 miles before! I drive 65 miles R/T 4-5 days a week through the beautiful Arizona desert and farmlands at 45-70 MPH, mostly using cruise control. In the summer, I average 21.5 mpg or around 420 mpt. In the fall-spring without A/C, I average 23.6 or 475 mpt. The most I've ever gotten was a confirmed 525 mpt one winter! My local dealership has done all recall work as well as routine maintenance, and I'm happy to say that it has been a great family ride that has never left us stranded. Unlike many Fords or Chryslers I've owned, this car has been a reliable companion. Sure, it has its known problems, but this one is no different. Thank you for taking the time to read about my experience!

  2. Sidney Goldner 2025-01-09

    Vehicle year: 2005

I recently purchased my second Nissan, after owning a reliable 98 Pathfinder with 210,000 miles. Unfortunately, this one had a power steering fluid hose leak at 45K miles ($400) and an electronic board issue at 60K that limited my power ($450). Additionally, I've had to replace the battery multiple times ($90 each time) and the visor keeps falling on its own ($400 for a dealer replacement seems excessive). There have also been two leaks, one from the engine oil and one from the transmission ($850). The engine oxygen sensor also failed ($450). Currently, the drive train feels rough and not as smooth as before, which is concerning. I'm hesitant to take it to the dealer and see what they find, but I'm hopeful that these issues can be resolved soon.

  3. Colten Bernhard 2025-01-09

    Vehicle year: 2005

I bought a used 2005 Nissan Murano with 67,476 miles on the odometer from Landers McLarty Nissan in Huntsville, Alabama on August 17, 2011. The salesperson, Eukrina, assured me that the dealership only sells dependable and trustworthy vehicles that meet their high standards. However, two weeks after the purchase, I noticed some issues with the car, including vibration and knocking noise from under the hood. After a mechanical inspection, it was revealed that two motor mounts were broken, and the total repair estimate was $847.12. I contacted the dealership to see if they could help with the repair cost, but they were not willing to assist. Despite their claims that I must have caused the issue, I believe that the dealership sold me a lemon. I had to replace the front engine mount on September 12, 2011, at a cost of $400.00, and the rear lower engine mount on October 15, 2011, at a cost of $402.15. At 72,469 miles, the service engine light came on, and after an engine diagnostic test, it was discovered that the catalytic converter was bad. I was advised that this could be a manufacturer-covered replacement issue. On December 20, 2011, Landers McLarty Nissan of Huntsville conducted a diagnostic test on my vehicle and informed me that the catalytic converter was faulty. However, they also mentioned that the vehicle had passed the emission control test and suggested that bad gasoline might be the cause of the issue. I explained that I had only used Chevron regular grade gasoline since purchasing the vehicle on August 17th, 2011. Unfortunately, they were unable to offer any further assistance and recommended that I try using premium gasoline to see if it resolves the problem. I consulted a reputable mechanic and repair shop, who informed me that this was a tactic to avoid covering the repair/replacement of the $500.00 part under the manufacturer's warranty. In addition to this, I had to spend an additional $1,005.73 to replace both struts, shocks on the rear, bushings (both lower-front), upper radiator hose, front exhaust gusset, drive belts, and two tires.

Bought new in 2005 and after 3 years was disappointed about purchase. It's frustrating to have so many recalls on one vehicle. The interior rattles are so loud that it's hard to concentrate. The squeaking brakes are also a bit of a nuisance. When the exterior door handle fell off after 5 years of ownership, I decided it was time for a change. I had originally planned to pass this vehicle on to my daughter, but I care about her too much to do that.

This is a good car overall, but unfortunately, we experienced some issues with the transmission after 80,000 miles. We did some research before purchasing and were confident that Nissan had resolved their transmission problems, but unfortunately, this was not the case. It seems that this has been a recurring issue for Nissan for over a decade, and it's disappointing that they have not taken any action to address it. As someone who has been a loyal Nissan customer since 1991, I must say that I am hesitant to purchase another Nissan in the future. Despite this, I still believe that Nissan produces quality vehicles and I hope that they will take steps to address this issue in the future.

I was hit on the driver's side by a drunk driver, but thankfully, due to God, my seat belt, and the car's design, I only received minor injuries. Unfortunately, my Murano was declared a total loss. Keep up the good work!

My wife and I have been driving Datsun, then Nissans since 1976, with a focus on sedans. We have been loyal Maxima drivers since owning a used 1979 model. However, when we recently approached the salesmen to trade in our 2014 Maxima, my wife surprised me by expressing interest in the Murano. She was drawn to its spacious seating, raised visibility, driving ease, AWD, electronics, and many accessories. After considering her points, I had to agree. We are now proud owners of a 2018 Murano! Our friends also love our choice.

I'm glad to hear that you like this car! It seems to have a good repair record and provides a nice ride. It's also great that it has flexibility for load carrying. I understand that you have a couple of complaints, one being the CVT and the other being the rooftop rack. Around 75,000 miles, the CVT started to show problems, specifically failure to upshift and revving up to 3K rpm or more at 20 or more MPH. Of course, this was sporadic and never showed itself when taken to the dealership until the day when it finally appeared and you drove it over, revving mightily all the way. Nissan replaced the transmission under warranty, which is great. The CVT has always been functional but rather halting, which may not be to everyone's liking. The other complaint applies not only to the Murano but to many other SUV's of all brands. The rooftop luggage rack consists of two rails parallel to the long axis of the car, but does not have an essential transverse front rail. It's stylish, but unfortunately of absolutely no value when trying to prevent a load from sliding backward. You need to fasten a load to a front rail to prevent it from sliding backward. Overall, it sounds like a fine vehicle and it's great that it's your third Nissan.

When considering purchasing this vehicle, it's important to check for any accident damage. You can do this by reviewing reports and having a mechanic inspect the car. It's normal for expenses to increase as mileage goes up, but this is typical for any car. At 145K miles, the transmission was replaced, although the exact reason is unknown. It's possible that this was due to the early mortality problems of many CVT transmissions. It's worth noting that this generation of CVT seems to be the Achilles Heel of the Murano. After many years of use, we donated this vehicle to the Girl Scouts, not because of any problems, but because we were moving to an electric car.

I'm glad to hear that you've had the chance to test drive all the major comparable SUVs and that you found the ride of this one to be the best. It's great to know that you found the HTECH controls easy to program and that the front and back cameras have been helpful in tight spots. I'm also happy to hear that you've been on a few road trips and have not experienced any fatigue, which is a testament to the great seats. Thank you for sharing your positive experience!
