Nissan Murano problems

The Nissan Murano (Japanese: 日産・ムラーノ, Hepburn: Nissan Murāno) is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Nissan since May 2002 for the 2003 model year, and currently in its third generation.

As Nissan's first crossover SUV for the United States and Canada, the Murano was designed at Nissan America in La Jolla, California, and was based on the Nissan FF-L platform shared with the third generation Altima. The European version of the Murano began sales in 2004.

The Murano was Nissan's only crossover SUV in the United States until September 2007, when the Rogue went on sale. In Canada, the X-Trail had been on sale as Nissan's second car based SUV since 2004 as a model for 2005; it was replaced by the 2008 Rogue at the end of 2007. The Murano is sized between the Pathfinder and the now defunct Xterra (which was replaced by the Rogue as a compact SUV). A convertible variant, the Murano CrossCabriolet, was available for the second-generation model for the model years of 2011 to 2014.

The nameplate Murano derives from the Italian islands of Murano and the namesake Murano art glass for which the islands are widely known.

Common Nissan Murano problems

The Nissan Murano, a midsize SUV produced by Nissan, has been praised for its attractive design and impressive lighting elements. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of issues. Here are three of the most common problems reported by Nissan Murano owners:

  • Failing engine mounts causing thumping in the floor: More than 180 Nissan Murano owners have reported this issue, which typically arises around 96,000 miles. The sound comes from the engine moving too much, indicating that the engine mounts have failed and need to be replaced.
  • Damaged seat adjuster assembly causing noise/rocking movement: Over 140 Nissan Murano owners have reported this problem, which generally appears after 84,000 miles. The damaged seat adjuster assembly can cause the seat to rock back and forth, squeak, or stop adjusting forward, backward, up, or down.
  • Air intake tube on the air cleaner box becoming loose: Nearly 40 Nissan Murano owners have reported this issue, which typically arises around 84,000 miles. This problem is related to a recall for 2003 to 2007 models of the Murano, where the air cleaner box or tube can come loose. If your Murano falls within this model year range and has this issue, the repair should be covered by Nissan.

These issues can affect the reliability and overall satisfaction of Nissan Murano owners. It is essential to consider these common problems when considering purchasing a used Murano. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or address these issues, ensuring a more reliable and enjoyable driving experience.

  • Summary: My sunroof exploded but I don't know why. There was no warning. Might have been a rock but I didn't see one. I had the sunroof closed but the fabric cover was open for light. I heard an explosive noise and then glass started raining in. I closed the fabric cover to keep the glass out of the passenger compartment. No real injuries other than a couple of glass shards being sharp. Mostly just got some skin irritation. Some areas on my car have scratched paint and plastic parts. I had my Nissan dealer look at it. They will clean up the glass and replace the sunroof for about $2000. I feel like it should be replaced for free as a warranty item. I also got an estimate from a collision shop for about $7500. There is scratched paint and plastic as well as the headliner certainly has glass in it. Their estimate was much more detailed. Filed an insurance claim today, so hope to have it all fixed up soon.

Nissan is recalling more than 56,000 cars because of power-steering hoses that may leak fluid and potentially lead to fires. Nissan North America said the recall affects the 2013-2014 Murano vehicles. The problem stems from the power-steering hose clamp, which may not adequately secure the hose. That could allow the hose to detach and leak power-steering fluid, the company said. Power-steering fluid leaking onto a hot engine or exhaust pipes could cause a fire, Nissan said.

Latest negative Nissan Murano car reviews

  1. Jeremy Frami 2025-11-16

    Vehicle year: 2010

When I purchased the Murano, it had less than 5 miles on it. Unfortunately, after 6 months, the A/C went out and the diagnosis was a defective hose. Then, 8 months later, the throttle started accelerating on its own, which prevented me from braking. Fortunately, I was able to kill the engine. The diagnosis was a defective throttle. I had the car towed to Baker Nissan, who suggested I call the dealership I purchased the vehicle from. I called Sterling McCall, but they said there was nothing they could do and directed me to Nissan Corp. Even after the Toyota issues, they said it had been fixed and denied my request for a buyback. Instead, they offered me a service program to make me feel better.

  2. Marley Spinka 2025-11-13

    Vehicle year: 2015

I really like a lot of things about this car, but there are a few issues that I want to mention. First and foremost, the steering can be a bit sensitive at freeway speeds, which means you may need to make more corrections than you would expect. I had a shop supervisor ride with me and he agreed that the 2015 Murano has a different type of electronic power steering that causes this issue. Nissan is aware of the problem, but unfortunately there is no fix other than to check the alignment. If you're not used to how the car handles, you may not notice this issue, but it's definitely there. I would recommend taking it for a test drive on the freeway to see if it bothers you before making a purchase. Secondly, the fuel economy is not as good as reported. I'm only getting 19.9 mpg in mostly highway driving, which is well below the EPA values. This seems to be a common issue and could potentially lead to a lawsuit. Thirdly, the interior materials are cheaper than my 09 Murano and some panels don't align properly. I'm disappointed in the assembly process. Lastly, the handling isn't as good as my 09 Murano, but the ride is softer.

  3. Jamal D'Amore 2025-11-08

    Vehicle year: 2004

The car was good for the first few years, but unfortunately, the repairs started coming in. There were so many issues that it's hard to know where to begin. I bought the 04 Murano in 06 and it ran well until it hit 100K. However, the engine started burning oil at a rate of about a quart per week, which is definitely not normal. The suspension is also one of the worst I have seen on any car, with tie rods or control arms needing to be replaced every few months. Additionally, the stereo stopped working and the rear door latch needs to be greased every few months. The parts and repairs are so costly that it's like owning a BMW, and it's hard to work on because it's so difficult to replace things in the engine. Unfortunately, this is due to bad design on Nissan's part. I won't be buying a Nissan again, especially due to their V6 burning oil. It's such a disappointment. However, the car does have AWD, which is a positive feature.

  4. Napoleon Stoltenberg 2025-11-02

    Vehicle year: 2006

The Murano has many great features such as comfort, power, 4 wheel drive, roominess, and style. It is unfortunate that Nissan has not adequately addressed the list of failure points with its customers. While newer models after 2006 may have improved, the chronic defects in the 2003-2006 models have left a major black mark in my book. The internet is rife with common chronic failures in these vehicles, and Nissan's poor handling of their responsibility to the consumer has left me with a negative impression. I have experienced enough of these failures that I will never buy a Nissan again. Although I have noted several failures on the internet, my 2006 Murano with 88,000 miles has only experienced a few minor issues. While I am fearful of the CVT transmission failing, I am grateful for the extended warranty that came with the car. Since my original review, nothing major has failed on the car, but there are some minor things such as the driver's side sun visor occasionally drooping.I've read on the web that some people have had issues with the pivot point becoming too loose, causing it to obstruct their vision. I'm expecting to have to make some adjustments, such as adding set screws or a sleeve, to stabilize it. Additionally, the cup holder plastics and springs are prone to breaking easily. I've had to repair them multiple times by adding steel pins and using plastic solvent cement to reinforce them.

This car has been in our family for a while now, and while it has a great look and is comfortable, we have unfortunately experienced some issues with it. We had a great road trip to Utah in it, but on one occasion, the AC went out and the car stopped accelerating while going up a hill in the heat. Since then, we have spent a lot of money trying to fix various problems that keep arising, such as issues with the window motor, AC, overheating, and multiple cylindrical misfires. Unfortunately, the transmission is unfixable and completely irreversible. We have been stranded in the heat multiple times, and the car rattles when driven. It also has poor gas mileage and is not reliable for long trips. While we have had some difficulties with this car, we hope that our experience can help others make an informed decision when considering purchasing a used car.

Traded my 2008 GMC Acadia for a 2010 Murano SL. Although I miss the bumper sensors and Onstar that the Acadia had, I am extremely pleased with the reliability of my Murano. It has been an absolute joy to own and drive, with gas mileage ranging from 19-26 mpg. You really can't go wrong with a Murano!

I ordered my '07 SL AWD Touring with Nav and VDC (Platinum exterior and caffe interior) in mid-August and finally received delivery of the vehicle about two weeks ago. The ride is very smooth, and the acceleration is adequate. The braking is very responsive, and the navigation system has been able to find all the addresses I've entered so far, even brand new streets. I previously owned a Jeep, and the stability of the Murano is much better with no roll. I'm currently averaging around 21 mpg. I also purchased an extended warranty (6 yrs/72,000 miles) for $995, which I believe was a good deal.

The Nissan has many great features such as a roomy interior, powerful engine, smooth transmission, comfortable seats, and a good stereo system. If you can afford the audio upgrade, it is definitely worth it. The AWD and CVT transmission work great, much better than the traditional Nissan transmissions which had many problems. The vehicle looks good and seats 5 with decent cargo space. However, there are a few downsides such as the wheel bearings and catalytic converter issues which can be expensive to fix. Additionally, the interior plastic parts are cheap and scratch easily, and the rear seat handle release broke. A bluetooth upgrade would also be beneficial. Overall, it is still a great buy!

We purchased an AWD LE with all the options. Our family consists of four members, including two girls at 5'8'', one girl at 5', and one male at 6'2''. In addition to the Sequoia 3 row, we also have the Murano, which is incredibly easy to maneuver in malls and parallel parking. The auto lift gate is very convenient to access, especially when our hands are full. Even with 20'' wheels, the Murano provides a very smooth ride on the highway. It strikes a perfect balance between a soft and firm ride. Compared to my mom's '04, there are so many improvements in both the quality of the ride and the fit and finish of the interior components. The space is great 99% of the time, and we have no problem with people space on trips. However, I'm getting a cargo box for luggage since my girls pack a lot.

I recently purchased my second Murano, having traded in my five-year-old model for an updated version. I have always preferred Nissan vehicles due to their dependability, and my previous Murano, along with the three Maximas I have owned, have been the most reliable cars I have ever had. Unfortunately, my first dealership visit, which was set up through Edmonds, was not very positive. The salesperson was loud and pushy, and I felt undervalued when he lowballed me on my used car by about $3000. Despite this, my wife and I persevered and are now very happy with our purchase. The ride is softer than our previous Murano, and we appreciate the increased mileage, getting 27 MPG on an interstate trip and averaging about 21 MPG on suburban driving. This is a significant improvement from our last Murano, which got about 18 MPG suburban and 20 MPG highway. We were committed to purchasing a white car, and although Pearl White was an upgrade, we were happy to pay for it. However, we were disappointed with the beige interior, which looked cheap and unappealing. Fortunately, the Graphite interior with brushed steel trim was a much better option and we are very satisfied with our choice. Overall, we are happy with our purchase and believe that Nissan has made a great car, despite some minor issues with the dealership experience and interior options.undefined
