2014 Nissan Murano problems
The Nissan Murano (Japanese: 日産・ムラーノ, Hepburn: Nissan Murāno) is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Nissan since May 2002 for the 2003 model year, and currently in its third generation.
As Nissan's first crossover SUV for the United States and Canada, the Murano was designed at Nissan America in La Jolla, California, and was based on the Nissan FF-L platform shared with the third generation Altima. The European version of the Murano began sales in 2004.
The Murano was Nissan's only crossover SUV in the United States until September 2007, when the Rogue went on sale. In Canada, the X-Trail had been on sale as Nissan's second car based SUV since 2004 as a model for 2005; it was replaced by the 2008 Rogue at the end of 2007. The Murano is sized between the Pathfinder and the now defunct Xterra (which was replaced by the Rogue as a compact SUV). A convertible variant, the Murano CrossCabriolet, was available for the second-generation model for the model years of 2011 to 2014.
The nameplate Murano derives from the Italian islands of Murano and the namesake Murano art glass for which the islands are widely known.

Common 2014 Nissan Murano problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 2014 Nissan Murano, several common problems have been reported:
- CVT Transmission Issues: Some owners have had their CVT transmission replaced under warranty. Although the number of complaints is smaller compared to other vehicles, this problem has been noted by Murano owners.
- Bad Oil Cooler Seal: A bad oil cooler seal can lead to oil leaks in the oil filter/oil pan area. Replacing the seal typically costs between $230-$350.
- Exhaust Problems: Several owners have experienced issues with the exhaust system, including rusted flanges, flex pipes, or mufflers. While original Nissan exhaust parts can be expensive, local muffler shops can often provide more affordable solutions.
- Wheel Bearing Issues: Bad wheel bearings are not uncommon at higher mileage, with replacement costs ranging from $290-$420. A common symptom of a bad wheel bearing is a humming/howling noise that intensifies at higher speeds.
- Alternator Replacement: Replacing the alternator in the Murano can cost between $530-$900, as reported by several owners.
- Front-End Problems: Front-end issues, including bad control arms, have been noted by owners. The Nissan service bulletin NTB10-035a for the 2009-2010 Murano addresses inaccurate fuel gauges or warning lights related to the fuel level sensor units.
- Head Gasket Leaks: Some 2009 Murano models have experienced head gaskets leaking coolant, which can be an expensive repair. However, many of these repairs were covered under warranty.
- Braking Issues: The 2009 Murano has faced significant braking problems, leading to over 200 complaints on the NHTSA website. Nissan even issued a recall for braking issues in this model.
These reported problems highlight various mechanical and component issues that owners of the 2014 Nissan Murano have encountered.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-26
- VIN: JN8AZ1FYXEW
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: The paint on my hood started peeling last spring for no apparent reason, so I brought my car to a local body shop to have it repainted, and the owner there said that he sees this all the time with Nissans that are that color and that were made around that year, but that there were no recalls for it. I let it be and just paid for the hood to be done, thinking that would be the end of it; but, shortly after that, the trunk started peeling all over, and keeps getting worse and worse; and, more recently, the sides of the car are peeling too and just getting worse and worse. I tried contacting Nissan’s headquarters about this, giving them all of this information, and they told me there’s nothing they can do because the warranty expired in 2016 (I didn’t even purchase the vehicle until 2020), and that it doesn’t matter that the body shop owner said that this is a very common problem, so I’m on my own for the cost of repainting the entire car, even though it’s clearly a manufacturing issue. I even tried contacting my local Nissan, and two workers there even also said that this is a problem they’ve seen several times, so that they also believe it’s a manufacturing issue, but that their hands are tied. At this point, I’m not sure what else to do, but it does seem entirely unfair that consumers — apparently LOTS of consumers — are having to foot the bill for something that is seemingly Nissan’s fault. Since it’s a manufacturing issue, I don’t see why there isn’t, nor why there shouldn’t be, a recall over it.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-23
- VIN: JN8AZ1MW6EW
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: CVT transmission gears slipping. OBD II code states stepper motor malfunction. This has caused the vehicle to go from 75 mph to 45 so quickly it almost caused an accident on the freeway. The most recent incident happened today. The transmission started whining and RPMs went high. This looks to be an issue for more Muranos than necessary and should be considered a recall problem.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-12
- VIN: JN8AZ1FY1EW
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: The contact owns a 2014 Nissan Murano. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the passenger’s side air bag warning light illuminated the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the passenger’s side occupancy sensor. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to Technical Service Bulletin: NTB16-052. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 30,000.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-01
- VIN: JN8AZ1MW1EW
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: 2014 Nissan Murano with only 43,000 miles had the ABS acuator fail causing the brakes to go all the way to the floor. Nissan had a recall on this part for 2015-2017 Muranos. Mine is a 2014. Cost to repair is $2400 from the dealer. I called Nissan and they wouldn't budge as far as assisting with the cost even though it is a KNOWN issue. These acuators should last over 100,000 miles so mine lasted only 43% of it's lifetime. There needs to be a class-action lawsuit against Nissan for this part.
SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

- Summary: Problems with Nissan Murano CVT transmission - Transmission slips with loss of power/acceleration while in traffic, then jerks or lurches forward. No codes (DTC) registered for the symptoms. Dangerous for myself and other drivers as this occurs without warning. Fortunate not to end up in an accident. Nissan manuals do not recommend precautions or service for this. Now faced with all repair costs.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-14
- VIN: JN8AZ1MU7EW
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Driving within a few miles headed home from work my car began to loose power as if it wanted to die out on me. It struggled tremendously to gain RPM as if it wasn't getting any gas. I had reached a red traffic light and was afraid it would shut off while awaiting on light to turn green. It would not pick up speed and was shaking badly. Eventually my check engine light appeared but I was already arriving home thankfully. Sadly, upon doing my research of troubleshooting possible issues for Nissan Murano online I came across many issues regarding the transmission. Worse of it all, Nissan has been well informed of this ongoing issue. A class action was filed in 2016 but it appears that was a limited time. My issue has just begun regarding my transmission, so how does this help anyone who is just now dealing with this type of issue? Anyone else with recent similar issue your feedback is greatly appreciated.

- Summary: My driver's side sun visor is stuck in the downward position, which is constantly obstructing my view and is a safety hazard to myself as well as others around me. I raised this issue to my dealer and was told that although this is a common problem with my specific vehicle make and model there currently are no recalls on this. I was told that a plastic clip within the visor is known to break after normal wear and tear causing the visor to not function properly. If this is a known issue, it should be a recall before there are any injuries as a result of obstructed vision.

Car was towed to a transmission repair shop.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-10
- VIN: JN8AZ1MU1EW
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Sun visors on driver and passenger sides will not stay in the up position causing visibility hazard.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-10-07
- VIN: Jn8az1mw8ew
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Cvt transmission failed with no warning during traffic on a bridge in New York 150 miles away. I was almost hit. Car would not go. Car had to be brought back by trailer. Cvt transmission had to be replaced. The CVT transmissions are a known problem and Nissan is doing nothing to fix it.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-09-01
- VIN: jn8az1mu0ew
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: My driver side sun visor has failed. It will not stay up in the home position nor will it stay against the windshield. It has simply flopped down and is blocking my view through the windshield. The only way I can operate my Murano is to move the visor to the left against the window of the driver's door. From the research I have done I have gleaned that this is an intrinsic design flaw common on all Murano and Rouge vehicles. And replacing it with an OEM sun visor at the dealership will not remedy the problem since the one they install will also fail eventually. Nissan has turned a deaf ear and blind eye to this critical safety hazard that obstructs the driver's forward view. There should be a recall on these visors. But don't hold your breath waiting for that to happen. I, for one, am NOT going to shell out the $400 that the dealership wants for the replacement visor...nor am I going to pay $150 an hour shop labor to have it installed. People be aware that there are NON-OEM replacement visors available on eBay and Amazon in the $50 price range and if you look on YouTube there are videos showing how to simply and easily install the new visor yourself with little more than a flathead screwdriver and a phillips head screw driver. Best of luck to everyone!
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-07-15
- VIN: JN8AZ1FY3EW

Your Nissan Murano sounds amazing! It's a 2014 model but it has everything you need and more. The car is comfortable, handles very well, and has a small turning circle. The wheelbase is long enough to provide a luxurious ride and it's wider than most cars you've had before. Even after 7 years, it still feels like total luxury.
-
Hi there! I've owned the car for 4 weeks now and overall it's been great. The only issue I've had is that one of the two fobs doesn't seem to be working. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix it?
-
I have owned two Muranos, and I can confidently say that they are reliable vehicles. Although I was involved in a rear-end collision with my second Murano, my insurance company provided me with a fair settlement, which allowed me to replace my '12 with a '14. Since then, I have driven it for 3 years, covering 47,000 miles, and it has not given me any issues. The ride is smooth, and the Goodyear tires I installed make it even smoother. I am impressed with the cargo space, as I can fit all my golf clubs horizontally without having to remove any of the longer clubs. My friends with a Cherokee cannot do that. The back window may be small, but that is a minor issue. The vehicle's mileage is about 19 city and 25 highway, which is reasonable. I have spent only a few dollars on routine maintenance, such as a new battery, regular oil changes, and a cabin air filter. My daughter drives it in the Wisconsin winter, and she loves it because it handles the snow like a tank. I am tempted to sell it and upgrade, but why sell a great vehicle? Someone in my family will drive this fine vehicle for years to come.
-
Hello! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you mentioned the ride being very quiet, which is great! However, I also noticed that you mentioned the back up camera and navigation being useless on a sunny day. That can definitely be frustrating. Additionally, it seems like the original tires were replaced at 26000 miles. Thank you for sharing your experience!

We've had our eyes on the Murano for a while, and it does not disappoint. Although we wish there was back passenger climate control and better speakers in the back, we really can't complain. Overall, it's a great vehicle!

This is a good car overall, but unfortunately, we experienced some issues with the transmission after 80,000 miles. We did some research before purchasing and were confident that Nissan had resolved their transmission problems, but unfortunately, this was not the case. It seems that this has been a recurring issue for Nissan for over a decade, and it's disappointing that they have not taken any action to address it. As someone who has been a loyal Nissan customer since 1991, I must say that I am hesitant to purchase another Nissan in the future. Despite this, I still believe that Nissan produces quality vehicles and I hope that they will take steps to address this issue in the future.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you've had a couple of issues with your Muranos in the past, but I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your 2013 Platinum model. It sounds like it's a great fit for you, especially with its comfortable interior and powerful engine. I understand that the gas mileage can be a bit of a downside, but it's great that you're considering other options like the Infiniti QX50. Let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything else I can help you with!

This car is really comfortable and has plenty of room for even the tallest passengers. While I would have preferred a higher trim level, I understand that the 'S' model has its limitations. Unfortunately, it lacks a moon roof, roof rack, and factory subwoofer, which are features I miss. It's true what they say, you don't know what you've got till it's gone, and I miss my 2006 Honda CR-V. The Continuously Variable Transmission, or CVT, is my biggest issue with the Murano. If you're used to a car with a bit of pickup, I wouldn't recommend getting one with a CVT. Acceleration can take longer than expected, and passing in traffic can be a challenge. However, the CVT does help with fuel efficiency. Despite this, I only get around 15 mpg, which is disappointing. Overall, the Murano is a great car, but it's important to consider your needs and preferences before making a purchase.

I have owned three Muranos over the years, but unfortunately, all three experienced transmission issues. Despite my love for the smooth feel of the CVT transmission, I have decided to move on from the Murano brand. It is worth noting that the Murano is the only 6-cylinder car with a CVT, while all other cars are 4-cylinder and less than 200 HP. Nissan representatives are aware of the transmission issues, but no action has been taken. It is important to do thorough research before making a car purchase, as there are many options available on the market. The CVT in a Murano is known for its smooth acceleration, which is why I kept buying one. While other car companies have limited the CVT to 4-cylinders, Nissan has continued to use it in their 6-cylinder SUVs. Although some may argue that this is a problem, I am confident that Nissan has made the right decision. Lowering the towing capacity to 1500 lbs was a smart move, as it allows Nissan to avoid any potential issues with the CVT. However, if you are looking for a car with a standard chain-driven CVT, I recommend the Subaru Forester. I recently purchased one and absolutely love the acceleration. If you prefer the smooth feel of a CVT, then I suggest you consider other brands or trade your Murano before the 100,000 mile mark.

Please note that there was a recall for the ABS actuator on this vehicle between 2015-2017, but not for this year. Unfortunately, the actuator failed after only 43,000 miles, which is much sooner than expected. The repair cost was $2400. I contacted Nissan for assistance, but they were unable to help. It is important to note that this is a known issue that Nissan is aware of, as they did recall it. While the 2014 model may have the same issue, Nissan is not currently offering support. There are many other SUVs available, but I would recommend avoiding this one and Nissan altogether.
