The Nissan Murano (Japanese: 日産・ムラーノ, Hepburn: Nissan Murāno) is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Nissan since May 2002 for the 2003 model year, and currently in its third generation.

As Nissan's first crossover SUV for the United States and Canada, the Murano was designed at Nissan America in La Jolla, California, and was based on the Nissan FF-L platform shared with the third generation Altima. The European version of the Murano began sales in 2004.

The Murano was Nissan's only crossover SUV in the United States until September 2007, when the Rogue went on sale. In Canada, the X-Trail had been on sale as Nissan's second car based SUV since 2004 as a model for 2005; it was replaced by the 2008 Rogue at the end of 2007. The Murano is sized between the Pathfinder and the now defunct Xterra (which was replaced by the Rogue as a compact SUV). A convertible variant, the Murano CrossCabriolet, was available for the second-generation model for the model years of 2011 to 2014.

The nameplate Murano derives from the Italian islands of Murano and the namesake Murano art glass for which the islands are widely known.

Common 2022 Nissan Murano problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2022 Nissan Murano, common problems include:

  • CVT Transmission Problems:
    • Issues like sudden surges, shuddering at low RPMs, poor acceleration, and bad gear engagement have been reported, especially in first-generation and 2015+ models. Immediate mechanic attention is advised for these problems.
  • Brake Issues:
    • The automatic emergency brake system, while a safety feature, can sometimes detect non-existent obstacles, leading to unnecessary emergency braking situations.
  • Creaking Panoramic Sunroof:
    • The thick glass of the panoramic sunroof can rattle and even explode. To prevent this, reinforcing it with quality sealant is recommended.
  • Poor EGR Valve:
    • Rough idling, power loss, black smoke, or oily smells may indicate a dirty or faulty EGR valve, necessitating replacement or cleaning.
  • Bad Seat Adjuster Assembly:
    • Frequent seat adjustments can lead to the seat moving from side to side, causing discomfort and safety concerns. Repairing the seat adjuster assembly can resolve this issue.

These problems, although present in the 2022 Nissan Murano, can be managed effectively through timely maintenance and addressing issues promptly.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that water had entered around the windshield enclosure. The windshield was replaced, and the vehicle was repaired; however, the contact stated that she was concerned that the water damage could cause future issues. UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-30
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5N1AZ2DS1NC
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My wife was victim to a hit and run driver on 30 Dec 22. Our 2022 Nissan Murano's AUTOMATIC COLLISION NOTIFICATION SYSTEM FAILED TO ACTIVATE UPON COLLISION. There were no warnings in the car prior. Additionally, the secondary system known as the "SOS BUTTON" which My Wife manually activated REPEATEDLY for 15 minutes failed. She called 911 and after 45 minutes a trooper finally arrived to help her. Unbelievably, this manufacturer advised us to "routinely test" the system to ensure it is active!!! No explanation how (we press the SOS button each time we start the vehicle now, and feel afraid to drive it, (but we have no other option). Nissan has not reached out to us until recently to express their denial of the system failure (this system failure has already been verified by two separate Nissan agents where three separate reported failures occurred that same day PRIOR to the accident). We were not notified. Our request to Fred Anderson Nissan and the manufacturer for a "buy back" were denied. I'm a 100% disabled Veteran (Retiree) and my wife is also a disabled Veteran (Retiree). One year ago we put our ENTIRE LIFE SAVINGS of $22,000.00 down-payment on the Murano,as it offered the most safety features available, specifically the Automatic Collision Notification system, which is to notify a specially trained agent to initiate emergency services. This system is a major priority for us. The dealership's only response is to trade the vehicle in (lose our $22,000.00 in the process) and purchase another Nissan with the same system in place. Our new vehicle has depreciated almost 40% in less than one year. We're being forced by the manufacturer to either keep this car with documented safety failures, or sacrifice our life Savings and begin anew with another 6 year payment, with zero equity. we have just begun to travel in this "perfect vehicle", after serving a combined 60 years of service to our country. Our financial future is at stake, and we did nothing to cause this.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-30
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5N1AZ2DS1NC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2022 Nissan Murano. The contact stated while his wife was at a complete stop, another vehicle which was driving approximately 25 MPH, crashed into the rear of the vehicle. The contact’s wife veered to the side of the road. The Automatic Collision Notification (ACN) safety feature designed to connect a driver to a live Response Specialist who can request emergency services on the driver’s behalf in the event of a collision, failed to engage. The contact’s wife then pressed the SOS button connected to the automatic collision notification (ACN) safety feature but the ACN failed to respond. The contact’s wife was able to drive to her residence. The contact contacted NissanConnect and tested the SOS button functionality; however, NissanConnect confirmed that they were not receiving any communication from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who informed the contact that they could not duplicate the failure. The contact’s wife, who has hypertension, was transported to the hospital with the assistance of her husband. A police report was filed. There were no injuries sustained. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the case was escalated to Nissan's regional specialist. The manufacturer informed the contact that they would follow up with him. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 16,600.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-16
  • VIN: 5N1AZ2CJ1NC
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2022 Nissan Murano. The contact stated while driving approximately 70 MPH in the rain with all windows rolled up, there was leakage that occurred. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated four days later she noticed the driver and passenger's side rear floorboard were soaked. The contact vacuumed up the water and drove the vehicle into her garage. There was more rain a few days afterward and the failure occurred again, while parked outside the garage. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer which diagnosed no failure. The contact then took the vehicle back to the dealer numerous times; and they replaced the carpet, headliners, and drains due to leakage and mildew. The failure reoccurred and was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 200.

Negative 2022 Nissan Murano car reviews

  1. Logan Deckow 2025-07-26

The design of the car is smooth and refined, making it a comfortable and enjoyable ride for both long drives and commuting around town. The car is easy to drive and rides like a more expensive vehicle, with good safety ratings. Although there are some cons, such as the blind spot in the pillars, which is a concern for many drivers, the car still offers a great driving experience. It's unclear how the car received such a high safety rating despite the view restriction caused by the blind spot. The engine has power, but the CVT can be disappointing unless you mash on the throttle. The 2022 model looks dated, with the same interior as the one from 5 years ago. Overall, if Nissan redesigned some features and got rid of the blind spot, the car would definitely deserve a 5-star rating. Until then, it's a solid 3 stars.

At just 13k miles, my 2020 Murano experienced a serious issue where it would not go in park or reverse. Despite having a warranty that covers towing, we were disappointed to find no assistance locally at the dealer or with the towing number. This is unacceptable. The mechanic at Nissan confirmed that an all new gear assembly is required, which is concerning and has left me questioning the reliability of this car. Moving forward, I hope that Nissan can provide a more accessible emergency towing number without the need for a computer. As a result of this experience, I am hesitant to purchase another Nissan vehicle. It is clear that improvements need to be made to ensure customer satisfaction and safety.

Update: Nissan quality seems to be slipping. Unfortunately, this Murano has visited the shop more often than the other two. I have noticed more road noise and the fit and finish is not up to par. Although I have always loved the seats and the engine, I am sadly parting ways with this Murano. This is my third Murano, fifth Nissan, and unfortunately, my last Nissan.

  4. Blaise Keeling 2024-03-02

I recently purchased a 2020 Murano, but unfortunately, I found the middle console to be too big and restrictive for my knee movement. Although I did not notice this during the test drive, it became apparent during a longer drive of 30 minutes. Additionally, I experienced difficulty keeping the vehicle straight as it was wobbling all over the road. Despite this, the vehicle's exterior appearance was sharp and it had some great safety features. The front seat was comfortable for my hiney, but unfortunately, I had to give it up due to the pain in my knee while driving. I believe that if the console was smaller, it would have allowed for more movement and been more comfortable for me. In the future, I plan to rent or do an overnight test drive before making a purchase.

Positive 2022 Nissan Murano car reviews

  1. Tristin Boyle 2025-07-27

I recently purchased a brand new Murano platinum SUV for my wife. She loves the vehicle because it feels comfortable and safe. Since we are both getting on in years, I usually take on the role of driver when we are together. I also own a 2016 Lexus RX 450h with all the latest safety features, which I prefer to drive on the road. However, when we are in the city, I definitely prefer to drive the Murano. It feels more solid and handles like a sport sedan, compared to my Lexus which I consider to be a very dependable and comfortable Cadillac. Although I find the Murano a bit constricting on long trips due to my weight of 230 pounds, my wife loves it everywhere and we have no criticisms of its dependability. Overall, we are both very happy with the Murano.

  2. Charley Legros 2025-07-19

The 2020 Murano Platinum LTD Edition in Pearl White is an exceptional vehicle. As a proud owner of three Muranos, I can confidently say that I have never had any issues with this model. Every time I test drive a different vehicle, I always end up realizing that my Murano is far superior. It is incredibly quiet in the cabin, even more so than the Audi Q5, Q3, Highlander, Rav 4, Pilot, CRV, Telluride, Palisade, any BMW I've ever driven, Ford Edge or Expedition, GMC SUV's, and more. The Murano is one of the most reliable vehicles on the market, with virtually no issues. It runs 900-980 km per tank of gas on regular gas, with V6 passing power. Oil changes are only around $80 Canadian, much less than Audi or BMW. The seats are the most comfortable I've ever experienced, and there are no turbo's to cost you money. The infotainment screen is elegantly integrated into the dash, unlike some giant drive-in movie theatre screens that other vehicles have. The Bose stereo is masterful, and the ride is soft on bumps, tracks straight and true on the highway with no wandering, and corners nicely with 20'' rims. I have found that most Nissan dealerships provide top-notch friendly service, which is not always the case with Honda, Lexus, or Toyota. In my opinion, Nissan is on the rise while the other three are on their way down. Honda hasn't made good vehicles since 1990, and their 1.5 Turbo engine is the worst motor ever engineered. Toyota was doing fairly well until 2014 and has fallen off a cliff in terms of quality. Their tech is also subpar, forcing you to subscribe to their apps just to have a map on your screen or to remotely start your car. Lexus is also not without its flaws. At 6'2 and 240 lbs, I have never been able to find a Lexus vehicle that fits me well enough to drive. However, I absolutely love my Murano. If I had to make any improvements, I would sharpen the steering, drastically improve emergency braking, and consider a dual clutch transmission like the Audi Q5. It's worth noting that the new Pathfinder is no longer using a CVT, so I hope the new Murano will follow suit.

We are thrilled to have leased the 2020 Nissan Murano Platinum! Despite the significant difference in purchase prices between the S, SL, SV, and Platinum models, we were pleasantly surprised to find that the monthly leasing costs were quite similar. Ultimately, we decided on the Platinum Murano, which is packed with attractive features, for only about $30 more per month than the stripped-down SL or SV models that we had initially considered. The Murano's spacious cargo area, comfortable ride, user-friendly electronics, and easy-to-master safety features (including sonar, cameras, lane and speed controls) were all key factors in our decision. While we weren't looking for towing capacity, great acceleration, or sports car handling in our SUV, we are delighted with the significant upgrade that the new Murano represents over our previous leased vehicle (an Infiniti QX50), all for slightly less money per month.

  4. Chad O'Kon 2025-06-20

I'm so glad you're enjoying your new SUV! The styling is fantastic and the rear view side mirrors provide great visibility. The electronic package is also very intuitive and easy to use. It's great to hear that the acceleration is good in traffic and that the safety features, such as lane detection and warning, as well as automatic deacceleration in auto mode, are working well for you. While it is a relatively large vehicle, I'm happy to hear that you like the handling features. Overall, it sounds like this luxury SUV is definitely worth the price!

  5. Edison Mills 2025-06-06

Great Vehicle! I have driven several SUV's over the years, including a Lexus G series. Yesterday, the emergency braking system saved me from an accident when everyone came to a panic stop. The SL is almost the top of the line and is very well-appointed inside and out, making it super comfortable. With 260 hp v6, it's great for winter driving. Nissan Rocks!
