2017 Nissan Murano problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Murano (Japanese: 日産・ムラーノ, Hepburn: Nissan Murāno) is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Nissan since May 2002 for the 2003 model year, and currently in its third generation.

As Nissan's first crossover SUV for the United States and Canada, the Murano was designed at Nissan America in La Jolla, California, and was based on the Nissan FF-L platform shared with the third generation Altima. The European version of the Murano began sales in 2004.

The Murano was Nissan's only crossover SUV in the United States until September 2007, when the Rogue went on sale. In Canada, the X-Trail had been on sale as Nissan's second car based SUV since 2004 as a model for 2005; it was replaced by the 2008 Rogue at the end of 2007. The Murano is sized between the Pathfinder and the now defunct Xterra (which was replaced by the Rogue as a compact SUV). A convertible variant, the Murano CrossCabriolet, was available for the second-generation model for the model years of 2011 to 2014.

The nameplate Murano derives from the Italian islands of Murano and the namesake Murano art glass for which the islands are widely known.

Common 2017 Nissan Murano problems

The 2017 Nissan Murano has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners of this car. These issues include paint chipping, dashboard cracking, stereo system and Bluetooth issues, and some electrical problems.

  • Paint Chipping: The most widespread complaint from 2017 Murano owners is paint chipping, which occurs around 40,000 miles. The paint on the edges of the hood and front bumper is particularly thin compared to other vehicles. The only way to fix the problem is by repainting the areas, which can cost around $1,000 per panel.
  • Dashboard Cracking: Some 2017 Murano owners have experienced dashboard cracking at around 20,000 miles. The cracking is caused by the expansion of materials on the dash due to direct sunlight. Using a simple sun shade can prevent the dash from cracking, but it costs over $1,500 to replace.
  • Stereo System and Bluetooth Issues: Some 2017 Murano owners have reported Bluetooth connectivity issues at around 1,500 miles. There are software updates for the stereo system that improve its reliability, and most dealerships will install these updates for free.
  • Electrical Problems: Some 2017 Nissan Murano owners have reported electrical issues, such as problems with the key fob and mirror switches. These issues can occur after the vehicle is no longer under warranty, and fixing the front driver side door key fob issue can cost close to $1000.00.

It is important to note that these problems are relatively minor compared to some other midsize SUVs on the market, leading to lower repair bills as it ages.

Nissan is recalling more than 56,000 cars because of power-steering hoses that may leak fluid and potentially lead to fires. Nissan North America said the recall affects the 2013-2014 Murano vehicles. The problem stems from the power-steering hose clamp, which may not adequately secure the hose. That could allow the hose to detach and leak power-steering fluid, the company said. Power-steering fluid leaking onto a hot engine or exhaust pipes could cause a fire, Nissan said.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-29
  • VIN: 5N1AZ2MH0HN
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEATS
  • Summary: The seat heating function on my vehicle failed due to electrical components becoming so hot that they melted the control module connector. The issue has been reviewed and confirmed by a Nissan dealership's service department. The service manager stated that he and his team would not plug the control module connector back in without my express direction because they considered it a fire hazard and a safety risk. There was no warning of this failure; the component simply stopped working but remained a fire risk. The only way I learned of the control module melting was after having the dealer's service department diagnose why the feature was no longer working. From the dealer's diagnosis (in writing): "Driver's climate control seat control module connector melted. Recommend replacing driver's climate control seat control module and driver's front seat harness. Left driver's front climate control seat control module connector unplugged to prevent further issues with system." It is unknown when the component melted. The problem was diagnosed by a Nissan dealership's service department on 29 November 2023.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-27
  • VIN: 5N1AZ2MH6HN
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Car is a Safety Hazard from October 2022 to current. I have had this car at the Beau Townsend Nissan Dealership Service Center, Vandalia, OH multiple times, about the safety issue of the car slowing down with floor acceleration then shutting off on 4 lane highways just barely escaping severe accidents. Each time dealership isn’t able to fix issue, had me spend $800 to fix what they thought it was, reset codes which has not fixed the safety issue. Latest issue occurred 4/27/23 traveling on 3 lane highway in middle lane 3 hours from my home at 70 MPH speed limit. Car abruptly started slowing down without cause, and almost created a bad accident. Luckily, I was able to get the car to the right narrow shoulder strip before it shut off, police came to assist with keeping me safe in my vehicle until I could have the vehicle towed 3 hours back to Beau Townsend Nissan for more diagnostics. I opened a case with Nissan Consumer Affairs prior to this last safety incident and to date nothing has been done. I have multiple documentation with the dealership about my car being a safety risks to me (senior citizen) and others on the road. The only people to date that seem to understand the safety severity this involves are the Highway police and towing services who have provided me safety every time the car shuts down abruptly while traveling. I’m reaching out to you in hope that this concern can be addressed before you learn about me and possibly others in a fatality situation. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide in this matter. Yes, I’m available for inspection of the safety concern specific to my vehicle.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-31
  • VIN: 5N1AZ2MG9HN
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The sunroof/moonroof drain tubes stop up and leak down the interior door frame and also into the floorboard of the car regularly. I have been in contact with Nissan Regional and they tell me its a maintenance problem. I read through the owners manual multiple times and nowhere does it mention sunroof drain tubes or anything related to sunroof drains. It does not mention it in the maintenance portion of the book or anywhere else. The issue with it leaking into the car is mold. This is a design flaw by Nissan, and unless a Nissan dealership submits it to NissanUSA as a design flaw, nothing can be done. Obviously a dealership will not submit it because they can make $159 each time a customer comes in to have those lines unclogged. NEVER BUY A NISSAN WITH A SUNROOF!!!!!! Mine has leaked into my car four times since 2021. It has flooded and molded my entire interior.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-11
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5N1AZ2MH3HN
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I bought the car used from a used dealership on February 28. On May 12th, I brought it to the shop for a few things but mainly due to the battery being corroded along with a battery light that comes and goes, but also for there being a slight skip in the transmission. The car would buckle when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. The shop called me back on May 23rd and said the car was ready and they found nothing wrong with the transmission. They claimed they found no codes or could not recreate the issue. I brought the car back a week or two later due to the battery light still flashing randomly. While taking the car for a test drive with the mechanic, it buckled pretty hard and I told the mechanic that’s what I had been talking about and he just brushed it off. On July 23, while driving home, my car bucked REALLY hard 5 times and then stopped accelerating past 20 miles per hour. On august 11th, I tried taking it for a test drive and it drove completely fine, like nothing had ever happened. While heading back to my house, I lost all gears and the car stopped accelerating while I was going up a hill. My rpm’s went way up but my car started to roll backwards down the hill. My grandmother happened to be behind me and she ended up pushing into my bumper and pushing me up the hill due to there being no pull of section and the speed limit being 50 mph. There were no lights on my dash indicating there was a problem. If my grandmother wasn’t there, it could have been much worse. I talked to someone at a local Nissan dealership and he claimed that my transmission is going and that even though my car is doing the same thing as a lot of the recalls and cars they offered extended warranties on, that mine didn’t qualify for one.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-29
  • VIN: 5n1az2mg8hn
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: CVT Transmission stops accelerating at some point after driving. RPMs don’t increase and vehicle struggles to maintain speed. Speed only increases or decreases due to incline or decline of the road. It’s dangerous as it mostly occurs on freeways/highways. Problem has been happening for 2+ years. Dealer cannot confirm as no check engine light code is created and problem ceases to exist only after engine is turned off. Vehicle is available to be inspected.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-03-21
  • VIN: 5N1AZ2MHXHN
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: AT RANDOM TIMES WHILE DRIVING THE FORWARD COLLISION WARNING SYSTEM AND CRUISE CONTROL WILL STOP WORKING. ON AVERAGE IT HAPPENS ABOUT EVERY 20 TO 25 MILES AND REMAINS OFF FOR 2 TO 3 MINUTES. IT DOES NOT OCCUR AT REGULAR INTERVALS THOUGH, THIS IS JUST THE AVERAGE. IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO GET NISSAN TO REPLACE THE SENSOR WHILE THE CAR WAS UNDER WARRANTY. THEY DID NOT WANT TO AND FINALLY WHEN THEY AGREED THEY SAID THE PART WAS ON BACK ORDER DUE TO HIGH DEMAND SO I'M NOT THE ONLY CUSTOMER WHO HAS COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS. THE SENSOR STILL DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY AND HAVING THE FORWARD COLLISION WARNING/AUTOMATIC BRAKING NOT RELIABLE IS A SAFETY ISSUE. HAVING THE CRUISE CONTROL NOT WORK IS JUST AN ANNOYANCE. AT NISSAN'S SUGGESTIONS, I'VE CLEANED THE SENSOR MANY TIMES AND I'VE ENSURED THAT NOTHING IS BLOCKING THE SENSOR. IT IS SIMPLY A FAULTY, UNRELIABLE PART AND I BELIEVE THERE SHOULD BE A NATIONAL RECALL. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR OVER 2 YEARS NOW. IT TOOK MANY MONTHS OF COMPLAINING AND SENDING THEM PICTURES OF IT NOT WORKING BEFORE THEY REPLACED THE SENSOR THE FIRST TIME. THAT FIXED THE ISSUE FOR A FEW MONTHS BUT NOW THE SECOND SENSOR ON THE CAR HAS BEEN MALFUNCTIONING FOR OVER A YEAR. I'M ATTACHING A COUPLE OF PICTURES FOR EXAMPLE. THIS ISSUE HAS HAPPENED OVER A 100 TIMES TO ME THOUGH.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-02-01
  • VIN: 5N1AZ2MH4HN
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: ADAS IS COMPLETELY UNRESPONSIVE. THE VEHICLE BREAKS UNEXPECTEDLY WITHOUT CAUSE OR WARNING. THE PROBLEM IS MOST COMMON WHEN CROSSING RAILROAD TRACKS. THIS PRESENTS AN EXTREME SAFETY HAZARD TO MYSELF AND MY FAMILY. THE SYSTEM NO HAS NO FUNCTION AND I AM UNABLE TO UTILIZE THE MOST BASIC FEATURES, TO INCLUDE CRUISE CONTROL. Negative 2017 Nissan Murano car reviews

  1. Frederick Kunde 2024-10-21

My 2017 car was purchased brand new. Despite having to take it to the shop 16 times, including two repairs, I have been able to maintain it well. I have had to replace the window motors three times and the entire radio unit, antenna, and other electronic components. Although I have had to use loaner cars for a total of two months, I have owned this car for less than two years. I have experienced issues ranging from the carpet pulling up and getting between my feet and the pedals to the motor for the AC being replaced. While the interior materials are made of plastic, I have been able to maintain the car's quality. Although I would not purchase this car again, I have learned a lot from my experience with it.

  2. Einar Padberg 2024-05-09

I had a concerning experience with my car when it suddenly displayed numerous warning signals at less than 1K miles. Despite the blind spot monitoring being turned off and the car thinking I had a frontal car crash (which I did not), the dealership assured me that the vehicle was safe to drive. However, upon checking the owner's manual, it was directed not to drive it. The issue took over 3 days to fix. Additionally, I have been experiencing intermittent bluetooth problems, which seems to be a common issue with numerous Muranos. The car's bluetooth system does not appear to turn on and no phone can be connected to the system. Despite bringing this to the dealership's attention, they continue to say that the bluetooth is functioning fine and blame it on my phone, despite the fact that no phone can be connected to the system at all. They have actually seen the vehicle not allowing any phone to be connected and continue to refuse to fix it. At 10K miles, the felt wheel well liner lost a pin somehow (nothing was hit or bumped) and is now disintegrating. Additionally, the front gray plastic on the bottom of the front bumper looks like a 5 year old car, faded and no longer gray, despite being garage kept and washed weekly. I would advise avoiding this car.

I have owned three Nissan Muranos so far - a 2003, a 2010, and now a 2017.5. I have always been impressed by the cargo space, gas mileage, and comfort in the front of the car. I made the mistake of buying an Audi Q5, which I had for a year and ended up $20K in the hole for trade-in. I realized that I wanted a body style similar to the 2003 and 2010 Muranos. Although the gas mileage with the Q5 was great at about 22 mpg/city, I have been disappointed with the 14.3 mpg/city that I am getting with my 2017.5 Murano after having it for about 3 weeks. This is a major problem for me. Despite the great interior and comfort of the car, I will be trading it in as soon as I can get to the Toyota dealer. I have taken the car back to the dealer twice, but to no avail. Therefore, my suggestion would be to avoid purchasing this car if gas mileage is an issue for you.

The salesman advised me to lease this car instead of buying it. Although there is a costly repair at 36000, the car drives great and has a stylish appearance. However, the front windshield's crossbar obstructs my view when pulling out into traffic, and the high windows make it difficult to reach the ATM at the drive-through. Despite these issues, I've enjoyed the panoramic sunroof and the powerful engine. The navigation system could use some improvement, as it doesn't always know where to go and isn't Samsung capable. Overall, my experience with this Nissan has been mixed, but I appreciate its performance and design.

The car's lack of back up sensors was a major issue for us, as we were initially told that it had them. However, the car does come with an around view monitor with moving object detection, which provides a bird's eye view from the top and a backup camera. The system beeps once if you back up too close to an object, but unfortunately, there is no way to increase the volume of the beep. We also experienced a rough ride, which we suspected was due to the tires. We asked Razzari Nissan to check the balancing and roundness of the tires, but they only took the car for a test drive and found that some of the tires were low on air. Despite our request, they refused to rebalance the tires or check for any flat spots. As previous owners of a Ford Edge Limited, we were disappointed with the Nissan Murano. However, it's worth noting that we have only put 125 miles on it.

I'm glad to hear that you've had the chance to test drive all the major comparable SUVs and that you found the ride of this one to be the best. It's great to know that you found the HTECH controls easy to program and that the front and back cameras have been helpful in tight spots. I'm also happy to hear that you've been on a few road trips and have not experienced any fatigue, which is a testament to the great seats. Thank you for sharing your positive experience!

Let's talk about dealers for a moment. It seems like many SUVs only come with black interiors, but not everyone wants that. I was lucky enough to find a Murano with a beautiful Mocha interior, but it was definitely overpriced. And while some vehicles offer the option to not have a moon roof, it often means sacrificing safety features, which is unacceptable. In my opinion, all safety features should be included in the price of the vehicle. Unfortunately, only the Platinum model has all the safety features, which is disappointing. On the plus side, driving the Murano is a pleasure and I'm happy with my purchase, especially since I was able to get a non-black interior. However, there are some downsides. The Bluetooth occasionally fails and some of the infotainment features don't work properly, like Google Search and Trip Advisor. Additionally, the voice recognition is frustrating and the steering wheel controls can be inconvenient. Despite these issues, the Murano is comfortable and enjoyable to drive. When my lease expires, I may consider other options, but for now, I'm satisfied with my choice. As you enter into year 3, you may find yourself standing by your earlier comments. If you have had a negative experience with your Nissan vehicle, you are not alone. Many customers have reported issues with the electronics, gas cap design, and transmission. However, it is important to note that every customer's experience is unique. We encourage you to explore all options and do your own research before making a decision. Thank you for sharing your feedback with us.

Hey there! If you're looking for a car that's loaded with features and can go from 0 to 60 in no time, this might be the one for you. However, it's important to note that the lower-end model may not be the best value for your money. On the other hand, the Platinum option offers all the luxury touches you could want. Why not take a closer look and see if it's the right fit for you?

I bought the 17 SL because my wife wanted another Nissan. The Rogue was a little too small, but the Murano was just right in every way. The seat height was perfect for my wife, who has a disability. The car is very sure-footed on the road and has all the tech a 69-year-old can handle. I love the look of the car as well, with its beautiful brown leather and beige stitching. It is very well-appointed and has lots of safety features. If I ever need another Nissan in 30-40 years, I'll definitely get another Murano. It's simply superb!
