The Nissan Murano (Japanese: 日産・ムラーノ, Hepburn: Nissan Murāno) is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Nissan since May 2002 for the 2003 model year, and currently in its third generation.

As Nissan's first crossover SUV for the United States and Canada, the Murano was designed at Nissan America in La Jolla, California, and was based on the Nissan FF-L platform shared with the third generation Altima. The European version of the Murano began sales in 2004.

The Murano was Nissan's only crossover SUV in the United States until September 2007, when the Rogue went on sale. In Canada, the X-Trail had been on sale as Nissan's second car based SUV since 2004 as a model for 2005; it was replaced by the 2008 Rogue at the end of 2007. The Murano is sized between the Pathfinder and the now defunct Xterra (which was replaced by the Rogue as a compact SUV). A convertible variant, the Murano CrossCabriolet, was available for the second-generation model for the model years of 2011 to 2014.

The nameplate Murano derives from the Italian islands of Murano and the namesake Murano art glass for which the islands are widely known.

Common 2009 Nissan Murano problems

The 2009 Nissan Murano, a midsize SUV known for its stylish design and powerful performance, has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. These issues range from transmission problems to electrical system faults, acceleration concerns, CVT failures, and steering and suspension concerns.

  • 2009 Nissan Murano Acceleration Problems: Some drivers have experienced a lack of power or sluggishness when trying to accelerate, which can be frustrating, especially when merging onto highways or passing other vehicles. This issue can be attributed to several factors, such as a malfunctioning throttle body, clogged fuel injectors, or a faulty mass airflow sensor. Proper diagnosis and repair by a qualified mechanic are necessary to restore the Murano’s performance.
  • 2009 Nissan Murano Electrical System Issues: Numerous reports suggest that the 2009 Nissan Murano may experience electrical system problems. Owners have complained about issues with the power windows, door locks, and interior lighting. Some have also encountered difficulties with the vehicle’s ignition system, such as problems with starting or the key not turning. These electrical glitches may be caused by faulty wiring, blown fuses, or malfunctioning switches. It is advisable to consult a professional auto technician to accurately diagnose and address these electrical system problems.
  • 2009 Nissan Murano CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) Failures: The 2009 Nissan Murano is equipped with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), which is known for its smooth operation and fuel efficiency. However, one of the most common problems that drivers have experienced is related to CVT failures, leading to issues such as overheating, loss of power, and unusual noises. The CVT failure may result from a defective internal pulley or belt, inadequate cooling, or insufficient transmission fluid. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes and inspections, can help prevent CVT failures and prolong the lifespan of the transmission.
  • 2009 Nissan Murano Steering and Suspension Concerns: Certain owners have reported problems with the steering and suspension of their 2009 Nissan Murano. These issues can include a clunking noise under load, which may be related to the on-demand all-wheel-drive system’s coupling that engages the rear axle when required. It is essential to address these concerns promptly to ensure safe driving conditions.

In summary, the 2009 Nissan Murano has several common problems, including transmission issues, acceleration concerns, electrical system faults, CVT failures, and steering and suspension concerns. Regular maintenance, timely inspections, and addressing issues promptly can help ensure a safe and enjoyable driving experience.

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-23
  • VIN: JN8AZ18U49W
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: When starting my vehicle, it would shake and hesitate to turn on. While driving, It would hesitate when accelerating. When driving at 70 miles, the vehicle would hesitate then drop 3 to 4 miles below speed on its own. The dashboard would indicate drive mode then change to reverse mode then back to drive mode, then reverse mode continuously while driving. The car was also making a loud clanking noise. When I was at a standstill at a red light with foot on the brake, the car was jerking forward on its own. I was driving the car with my 2 year old when this happened and decided to take it to a mechanic who confirmed that it is a transmission problem as well as a broken axle on the left. I left the car at his shop and started shopping around for a transmission replacement which is very costly. My concern is, if this has been a faulty issue with 2009 Nissan Murano transmissions, then it is likely that this can happen again if I purchase a used transmission which at this time, I cannot afford so it is sitting at the mechanics repair shop until I either save money for a transmission or use the money to get a better used vehicle. At this time I have to take my mom to work and use her car so i can go to work. I’ve been doing this for the past 2 weeks and unsure as to how much longer I can keep doing this as our work hours are conflicting.

Luckly no one was coming in the other direction, or I could have been involved in a serious accident!!! I had the alternator check and it was bad, so we replaced it. The second time this happened was two days ago I was doing 65 MPH on a four-lane highway and without any warning I lost power and could not accelerate I was able to pull to the side of the road, but m emergency flashers were of no use due to the battery was low because the entire car was using it for power. There was a recall for this car in 2019 for exactly this problem - R1814. Apparently, the fix the dealer has performed didn’t alleviate the problem. I sincerely request you to perform a thorough assessment of the recommended fix for this recall to safeguard others from this serious safety issue. Also, if possible, I request you to arrange for assessment of my vehicle to confirm if my ABS concerns are true which I truly believe they’re.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-23
  • VIN: JN8AZ18W09W
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Nissan has a voluntary recall for faulty air bag sensors on 2009 Nissan Murano but when you take it in they say your vin is not included. This is fraud because they know that ALL Muranos from 2009 and other years have a faulty sensor in the passenger seat and the air bags will NOT deploy. They lie because the fix is a new seat cushion which is expensive. They try to charge owners $5000 to repair a safety issue that is their responsibility. There are many, many complaints for this issue and many people are driving around without airbags because of Nissan’s dereliction. How many people will die??

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-16
  • VIN: JN8AZ18W29W
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: In reference to my 2009 Murano, I like to bring my concern/complaint into your attention that since Jan 07, 2023, my Murano's airbag light is blinking. On Jan. 16, 2023, I took my SUV to ACME Nissan dealer situated at 2050 Highway 130, South Brunswick, NJ. 08852 for checkup and repair. Dealer diagnosed airbag issue code B1018 and advised "in control unit K8820-1AL0A and 873A2-3Z53A seat sensor are bad and need to be replaced. Dealer mentioned that they cannot replace these part/sensors, because they are not available thru Nissan anymore. Dealer also tried to get these parts from the aftermarket dealer. But these parts are also not available in aftermarket. Not functioning of airbags is a big-time Safety issue. I contacted Nissan customer service support and opened the case (48254432). But some reason they are not helping me at all in resolving this safety issue. Their answer is, they cannot do anything for this issue. While going through the Nissan forum, I noticed that this safety issue is common in Nissan Murano. This wonders that why Nissan have not issued any recall on this airbag safety issues. Are they going to issue the recall after someone die in the accident because of this airbag issues. Now I cannot even trade my SUV because of this safety issue. Now I am too afraid to drive my 2009 Murano. I love my Murano so much it runs like a new and I am not in the position to buy a new Murano at this time. I would really appreciate if you can request Nissan to rectify this issue as soon as possible.

2009 Nissan Murano recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2009 Nissan Murano.

2018-12-19
  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
  • Summary: Nissan of North America, Inc (Nissan) is recalling certain 2009 Murano vehicles. The valves within the ABS Hydraulic Control Units (HCU) may react with brake fluids containing specific corrosion preventative additives. This reaction may cause the valves to not close properly.
  • Consequence: If the valves do not properly close, additional brake pedal travel may be required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan has notified owners, and dealers will flush the brake system with DOT 4 fluid. The HCU will then be tested to detect a possible stuck valve condition. If necessary, the HCU will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began February 7, 2019. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669.
2009-10-05
  • Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
  • Components: TIRES:PRESSURE MONITORING AND REGULATING SYSTEMS

THE MATERIAL IN THE NUT USED TO SECURE THE SENSOR-TRANSMITTER OF THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS) MAY CORRODE AND POTENTIALLY CRACK IN AREAS WITH HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT. IF THIS OCCURS, THE NUT MAY COME OUT OF THE SENSOR-TRANSMITTER AND THE TPMS LAMP WILL ILLUMINATE.
  • Consequence: IF THE TPMS LAMP IS DISREGARDED AND THE VEHICLE CONTINUES TO BE DRIVEN IN THIS CONDITION, THE TIRE WILL QUICKLY LOSE AIR PRESSURE AT A CONSISTENT RATE RESULTING IN A FLAT TIRE INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: THE DEALER WILL REPLACE THE TPMS NUT WITH A NEW, MORE ROBUST NUT. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE NOVEMBER 9, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261 AND INFINITI AT 1-800-662-6200.

A VARISTOR IN THE OCS CONTROL UNIT LOCATED IN THE PASSENGER SEAT CUSHION MAY HAVE BEEN MANUFACTURED OUT OF SPECIFICATION. UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS, THIS COULD CAUSE AN INTERRUPTION OF SIGNAL BETWEEN THE OCS AND THE AIR BAG CONTROL UNIT (ACU).
  • Consequence: THIS COULD RESULT IN THE PASSENGER AIR BAG BEING SUPPRESSED WHICH COULD FAIL TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE PROTECTION IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL TEST THE SIGNAL BETWEEN THE OCS AND ACU SYSTEMS USING A SPECIAL TOOL TO CHECK THAT IT IS FUNCTIONING AS DESIGNED. IF NECESSARY, THE SEAT CUSHION (CONTAINING OCS HARDWARE) WILL BE REPLACED WITH A NEW ONE MANUFACTURED TO SPECIFICATION. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 4, 2008. Negative 2009 Nissan Murano car reviews

  1. Landen Kutch 2024-10-19

Ammco refuses to work on them due to their poor quality and inability to be rebuilt. A brand new one costs $3500. In my opinion, this product deserves a negative rating.

  2. Eloy Rau 2024-10-08

I purchased my 2009 Murano brand new, but unfortunately experienced some issues with the battery within the first year. Despite having it checked and being told it was fine, I still had some trouble with it. While it's not the most reliable car I've owned, I have found that switching to snow tires has helped with its performance in the snow. However, I have had some trouble with the tire maintenance light coming on after getting new tires installed. Additionally, I'm not a fan of the start button feature and have had to replace the batteries in both of my keys. Unfortunately, this can be quite costly if they are lost. Overall, I have mixed feelings about this car, but I'm hoping to find a more reliable option in the future.

  3. Elmo Kiehn 2024-09-26

Please be aware that there is a known issue with the push start feature on the 2009 LE AWD Murano. Despite being widely advertised in commercials, magazines, and internet ads, some drivers have experienced intermittent problems with the push start feature when using the intelligent key. During the first two weeks after purchasing my SUV, I experienced a complete stall and neither the push start nor the key would work. Although the dealership has been unable to replicate the problem, I have decided to return my SUV for another model without the push start feature until Nissan perfects the technology. Thank you for your understanding.

  4. Oswald Collier 2024-08-18

Replacing tires can be quite expensive and they may wear out faster than expected. Unfortunately, the engine blew up at 52,000 miles despite regular maintenance. Additionally, the ride can be a bit bumpy due to the use of skinny tires. It's disappointing to hear that you did not receive any assistance from Nissan.

  5. Jerrell Lindgren 2024-08-14

There are several features that we like about this car, such as the powerful 3.6l engine and the great CVT transmission. The AWD and dash controls are also good. However, we have noticed that the ride can be quite bouncy and uncomfortable, especially at highway speeds of 65 to 70. In fact, it can be dangerous when going over bumps and in left-hand curves. Therefore, we would not recommend this car if a smooth ride is important to you.

Positive 2009 Nissan Murano car reviews

  1. Giles Koelpin 2024-10-12

My wife and I spent several months researching our next new car. We looked at several models including the Toyota Highlander, Mazda CX-7, Ford Edge, Honda Pilot, and many more. While each of these models had options and accessories we liked, none of them had everything we were looking for in one vehicle. That is, until we came across the 2009 Murano. The Murano stood out from the rest due to its comfort, quality, fit & finish, ride, accessories, and options. We are extremely happy with our purchase and thoroughly enjoy driving this car. We understand that this car may not be for everyone, but we are just thankful that we waited for it and we couldn't be happier. Our 2009 Murano is Silver, LE AWD, Nav, Leather, Dual Moonroof, and more.

  2. Alexie Rice 2024-09-27

I really liked the overall appearance of the car. However, I did find that the 'A' pillars obstructed the view out of the front window, especially when trying to see before pulling out into traffic. The ride was not always smooth, except when on the interstate. Unfortunately, the constant noise created by the CVT transmission was the final straw for me. It was frustrating to try and find the 'sweet spot' with the transmission to get it where I did not hear the growl. I eventually decided to trade it in for a 2010 Lexus RX 350, and I must say, what a difference! The Lexus provides a completely different experience, and it is all positive.

I used to drive a Volvo V70 and was considering other premium SUVs such as the Lexus RX, Acura RDX, and Infiniti FX. However, I found that the Volvo V70 had the best combination of drivability and comfort. Although its cargo area is smaller than other premium SUVs, the seating is very comfortable for four or five adults. The handling is confident and the ride is firm, smooth, and quiet. The acceleration is fast and it is easy to drive around the city, although the gas mileage could be better. The Volvo V70 handles road imperfections, including potholes, very well. It is also terrific at high speeds on the highway, very stable with reasonable gas mileage. The speed-sensitive steering works very well.

Traded in a Quest van. Nissan really ramped up their quality with the Murano. The ride is excellent and the seats are very comfortable. All controls are easy to find and use. The back-up camera is wonderful. The inside feels very large and spacious, while the outside looks sleek and compact. I am so glad I chose this vehicle!

I bought my Murano LE with 114,000 miles on it 5 years ago and it has been the best, most reliable, and comfortable car anyone could ask for. I have had no major mechanical issues, only minor replacements such as the power steering, serpentine belt, battery, tires, and brakes. If you are in the market for a new car, I highly recommend the Murano LE. The luxury, comfort, technology, and sound system are incredible. I am so impressed with Nissan and my next car will definitely be another Murano. Thank you Nissan for creating such an amazing car!
