2020 Nissan Murano problems
The Nissan Murano (Japanese: 日産・ムラーノ, Hepburn: Nissan Murāno) is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Nissan since May 2002 for the 2003 model year, and currently in its third generation.
As Nissan's first crossover SUV for the United States and Canada, the Murano was designed at Nissan America in La Jolla, California, and was based on the Nissan FF-L platform shared with the third generation Altima. The European version of the Murano began sales in 2004.
The Murano was Nissan's only crossover SUV in the United States until September 2007, when the Rogue went on sale. In Canada, the X-Trail had been on sale as Nissan's second car based SUV since 2004 as a model for 2005; it was replaced by the 2008 Rogue at the end of 2007. The Murano is sized between the Pathfinder and the now defunct Xterra (which was replaced by the Rogue as a compact SUV). A convertible variant, the Murano CrossCabriolet, was available for the second-generation model for the model years of 2011 to 2014.
The nameplate Murano derives from the Italian islands of Murano and the namesake Murano art glass for which the islands are widely known.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

- VIN: 5N1AZ2CS3LN
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: My sunroof exploded but I don't know why. There was no warning. Might have been a rock but I didn't see one. I had the sunroof closed but the fabric cover was open for light. I heard an explosive noise and then glass started raining in. I closed the fabric cover to keep the glass out of the passenger compartment. No real injuries other than a couple of glass shards being sharp. Mostly just got some skin irritation. Some areas on my car have scratched paint and plastic parts. I had my Nissan dealer look at it. They will clean up the glass and replace the sunroof for about $2000. I feel like it should be replaced for free as a warranty item. I also got an estimate from a collision shop for about $7500. There is scratched paint and plastic as well as the headliner certainly has glass in it. Their estimate was much more detailed. Filed an insurance claim today, so hope to have it all fixed up soon.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-22
- VIN: 5N1AZ2DJ3LN
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The car keeps braking like I've been in an accident when I travel under an overpass. It doesn't do it every time, just sometimes. I've had it at the dealer, Don Moore in Owensboro, Ky. and since it doesn't show any codes they can't/won't do anything about it. I don't feel safe driving this car for fear it will slam on the brakes at any time. It has happened 3 times so far. It also did it almost, once, when driving down the main street in town. It all of the sudden showed the cameras and the lights came up on the dash but luckily it didn't brake. Thank you. [XXX] . UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

- VIN: 5N1AZ2DS1LN
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I was driving my vehicle on the freeway at a speed of 60 mph when all of a sudden the sun roof part of my panoramic roof shattered all over my interior of my car and myself. It blew up all over me and was quite disturbing let alone could of caused an accident or glass could of cut my eyes. I was quite shaken up. I contacted my insurance and working a claim to have it replaced. Then I find out this has been common in Nissan vehicles for a long time and law suits because of it, too. These sunroofs allegedly exploded because of their design. Instead of laminating the glass in the sunroofs, the lawsuits claimed, Nissan used thin pieces of tempered glass instead of thicker pieces. The reason why Nissan allegedly did this, according to the suits, is so that the sunroof could be lighter and, thus, the vehicle could get better fuel economy. The lawsuits also alleged the Japanese automaker applied ceramic enamel around the edges of the sunroofs, weakening the strength of the glass. I also sent an email to Nissan but doubt if I will hear from them. What is being done by the Safety Commission in regard to this matter so this doesn't happen to other customers of these vehicles?

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-07

- Summary: It has happened twice since we purchased our Murano 8 months ago. When pulling onto a divided highway you have to slow down then you accelerate to get into the lane....the transmission hesitates around 2 or 3 seconds then grabs the gear and you take off. This is very worrysome for us, both being retired and it could cause an accident.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-28
- VIN: 5N1AZ2CS7LN
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: While driving down interstate the car's automatic collision breaking system activated and brought the car to an immediate stop. While breaking the information screen in the steering wheel area flashed red with an explanation point symbol but as soon as the breaking was done it went away and no other lights appeared on the dash indicating an issue. There was nothing that should have triggered the automatic collision braking system to have engaged. Had someone been directly behind me this could have easily caused an accident by them slamming into the back of my car as nothing would have caused them to expect sudden breaking by me. The unexpected sudden breaking happened twice within a 10 minute window while driving on interstate. I have driven it minimally since so I could have it looked at by the dealer to review the issue as it is under warranty and I felt it unsafe to drive. The car has been inspected by a Nissan dealer and they are unable to reproduce the issue and are not taking any repair action at this time.
STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-06
- VIN: 5N1AZ2AJ7LN
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
- Summary: This is a 2020 Nissan Murano S. The vehicle has been well maintained and taken to the dealership for maintenance periodically. I usually take my vehicle to either Antwerpen Nissan Clarksville or Antwerpen Nissan Security. I took my vehicle to Antwerpen Nissan Security for a transmission flush and change. Shortly after that service I started to notice an oil smell coming into the cabin. I took it back to them twice and they did not see any leakage or anything to cause the smell. I later took my car to Antwerpen Clarksville. They didn't notice the smell but said I needed to replace both front lower control arms for $1655.88. Front lower control arms splitting, dry rotting. This car was purchased brand new and only had 62K miles. This appears to be premature wear and of course the warranty as passed, which would have been 5 years or 60,000 miles. Out of all the visits I had, no one seen this premature wear on the control arm until this visit. This doesn't happen overnight, and I think Nissan should cover this. My vehicle was seen at Antwerpen Nissan at 56k and inspected and the dealer never mentioned this issue.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-01

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-05-04
- VIN: 5N1AZ2DS8LN
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Yesterday, my wife and I were on I94 eastbound in heavy afternoon traffic, in the left of three lanes, and crossed from Minnesota into Wisconsin. The car was on interactive cruise control. The freeway entry to Wisconsin is a long, uphill grade and I needed to get out of the left lane in preparation to exit about 3 miles ahead. I turned off the interactive cruise control and pressed the accelerator in order to safely merge into the faster moving center lane. I instantly lost control of the engine. Not only did the engine not respond to pressing the accelerator, it actually bogged down and slowed. Having effectively lost power because I had no control over the engine, I tried to shelter on the left shoulder but is was not wide enough to get the car out of the left lane. Worse, the narrow shoulder between the left lane and the concrete barrier wall was full of debris, and I immediately had a terrible fear of puncturing a tire in which case I would really be in trouble. The car came to a stop and I still had no control over the engine, sitting there with high speed traffic swerving around us. I put the transmission in neutral and it still didn’t respond to the throttle, and the same with park. Finally, I stopped the engine and restarted, and I then had control of the car. When a gap in traffic came, I got back on the freeway and continued home with no further incident. I could easily have been hit by a high speed vehicle, or caused a severe accident involving others due to vehicles unexpectedly finding us stopped, and still partially in the left lane. The car will go to the dealer next week. I was so terrified that I do not know if there were warning lights lit on the dash, but I didn't see any.

- Summary: On Feb 26, 2022; my wife and I were driving down a Hwy in SW Georgia at approximately 60 mph and our 2020 Nissan Murano Sunroof literally exploded. The roof was fully closed at the time and the sun shade was also closed. It was like a shot gun blast. Was a good thing I was driving, had my wife been driving I suspect she would have reacted in a manner that would have wrecked us. We were both shook up. Hearing wind blowing into car, I slightly opened the sun shade and could tell the center portion of the sun roof had blown out and shivers of glass came down onto us, I closed the shade and pulled over at next available opportunity. At the time the sun roof exploded, there were no other vehicles within approx 1/4 mile in front of us, we had not just passed any vehicle, there were no overpasses, and nothing we recall to have hit the roof. At the time, We were traveling out of our home town, a significant way from home; as soon as I stopped, I took Photos of the roof from the exterior above the shattered sunroof with the center section blown out. I was able to purchase a heavy duct tape and tapped the shattered sunroof from the top, with several layers of tap to secure the remaining shattered glass/sun roof. We were able to travel on home. I immediately contacted the dealership (Greenway Nissan Brunswick Ga) were we had purchased the 2020 Nissan Murano vehicle and explained what happened. I was told they had never heard of that happening. We had purchased the Platnum Extended warranty with our New Murano. I scheduled an appointment and took my vehicle to the Greenway dealership on Mar 8, 2022; and the sun roof was replaced under warranted, and my vehicle was returned to me on Mar 10, 2022 with a new Sun Roof (ref: Greenway Invoice 48890). The sun shade had a scratch approximately 18”, but was not replaced because the adjuster could not determine it was caused by the roof explosion, which I don’t see how it could not have been.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-27
- VIN: 5N1AZ2DJ5LN
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: The contact owns a 2020 Nissan Murano. The contact stated that while driving at 64 MPH, the vehicle became wobbly. The contact stated that after driving over a pothole in the roadway while she was driving on a bridge, the failure almost caused the vehicle to crash into the side of the bridge. The contact veered to the side of the road and inspected the vehicle but could not determine the cause of the failure. The contact continued to drive the vehicle at a slower speed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who inspected the tires and informed the contact that the tires were properly inflated. The contact stated that the failure had been reoccurring while driving and the vehicle was wobbly. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 19,000.

- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: WE'VE HAD THE VEHICLE OVER A YEAR AND HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO GET USED TO THE FORWARD AND BACKWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE EMERGENCY BRAKING, AS IT SEEMS TO ACTIVATE FOR NO REASON AT ALL. MULTIPLE TIMES THIS HAS HAPPENED TO MY WIFE, THE PRIMARY DRIVER. SHE'S TOO ANXIOUS TO DRIVE IT ON DAYS WITH INCLEMENT WEATHER WHEN IT'S THE WORST. WE HAVE THE CAR BEING EVALUATED BY THE DEALER, IF THEY CAN'T REPAIR OR DISABLE, SENSORS AND AUTO BRAKING THEN I'M GOING TO GET THEM TO BUY IT BACK FROM ME.

- Summary: I-95 NISSAN, a Dealership in Riviera Beach Florida received a stop sale order on this car on March 10, 2021. I went to the Dealership on 4/13/2021 to get the oil changed and tires rotated on my 2015 Nissan Murano Platinum. My existing vehicle was in perfect mechanical condition, and while I was awaiting the completion of my oil change, a Sales Person came up and began to chat with me, and told me I needed to buy a new car, and said my car would be junk in no time, and I needed to get rid of it before it was literally worth nothing. This Man did not relent all day long. I finally caved and bought the 2020 Murano against my better judgement, and I had no idea it had a recall issued on it, but they did! About 2 months later, I get a call from the Dealership inviting me in for a free oil change and Tire rotation on the new purchase. I declined, because I was ultimately not satisfied with the Salespersons behavior post-purchase. He continued to text me and ask me out to dinner, dancing, etc. until I finally blocked his phone number. So, I had no intention on getting anything further from THAT Nissan Dealership. The Person on the phone mentioned that they really needed to get the car in there because they really should not have sold it to me with an open recall, and they needed to get that fixed. I still declined, and did some research, only to find that it's a pretty major SAFETY recall, that could affect the steering loss. I also discovered that Federal Law 49 U.S. Code § 30116 – Defects and noncompliance found before sale to purchaser, prohibits the sale of a new vehicle with an open safety recall!!! I contacted Nissan, and they opened case# 45574832, about the sales experience, but stated the Dealership is independent of them, and I would need to remedy the situation directly with them. I attempted to do so numerous times, to no avail. They have continually publicly denying my requests, blocking my reviews about the Dealership and I am now at this point.

- Summary: While parallel parking, we backed into the space and when we put the car into Drive, it lurched forward at an incredible speed. We hit and pushed the car parked in front of us, hopped up onto the sidewalk, knocked down a street light, and moved a huge concrete planter. The airbags over the windshield and under the dashboard deployed. The bags under the dash exploded with such force that they injured my husband's legs, and he has been seeing a wound doctor for the past five weeks. The car was towed to a repair shop. I reported the incident to Nissan NA; they sent a representative to retrieve information from the EDR. Nissan has advised that no mechanical problems were recorded but we are absolutely certain the car malfunctioned. We think it might have been a problem with the CVT.

We are thrilled to have leased the 2020 Nissan Murano Platinum! Despite the significant difference in purchase prices between the S, SL, SV, and Platinum models, we were pleasantly surprised to find that the monthly leasing costs were quite similar. Ultimately, we decided on the Platinum Murano, which is packed with attractive features, for only about $30 more per month than the stripped-down SL or SV models that we had initially considered. The Murano's spacious cargo area, comfortable ride, user-friendly electronics, and easy-to-master safety features (including sonar, cameras, lane and speed controls) were all key factors in our decision. While we weren't looking for towing capacity, great acceleration, or sports car handling in our SUV, we are delighted with the significant upgrade that the new Murano represents over our previous leased vehicle (an Infiniti QX50), all for slightly less money per month.
-
Our second Murano is just as great as the first one we had for 10 years. The engine is exceptional and never consumed oil. Although we had to replace it after an unfortunate accident with a deer, we confidently purchased another Murano. It is important to note that the towing capacity has decreased to 1500 lbs, compared to our previous 2010 model which had a capacity of 3500 lbs.
-
I recently took my 2013 Murano in for some work and decided to check out some certified used 2020 Muranos. I was pleasantly surprised to find a beautiful deep pearl blue 2020 SL, which I never thought I would buy. The car has everything I could want, including excellent safety features and great technology. The infotainment screen is only 8 inches, but it works perfectly for me, and AppleCarplay is a great feature. The car also has a panoramic sunroof and heated seats in both the front and rear. There are plenty of cubbies to store things, and at least 2 or 3 USB ports. Overall, the power with the 6 cylinder engine and the CVT is great, and the seats are extremely comfortable, just like in my 2013. It's the perfect car for a road trip, and I highly recommend it.
-
On my retirement day in 2015, I traded in a 2013 Honda Accord Coupe that I wasn't happy with. Most of my past cars have been either sporty or performance, so everyone questioned why I bought an SUV. However, I figured that in retirement, the word 'travel' comes to mind, and with a wife and dog, an SUV seemed logical. I'm happy to report that in 7 years and 80+K miles, not a single problem has occurred. Fast forward to 2020, and we now have the Murano (wife) and I have an Infiniti Q60 Red Sport (in Red) with every option. Unfortunately, the Q60 needed a new wiring harness, new battery, and safety equipment failing in the rain with little help from the dealership. It was time for the little Red Rocket to go away. So, I wanted something with a good track record, and I decided to dump the Infiniti and buy another Murano. I gave the dealership two color schemes, and they happened to get the identical one as the 2015, so we have twins! Both are wonderful. The comfort of the 2020 seems to have been improved, the 20” wheels are smooth and quiet, and you gotta love the panoramic moonroof.

Hey there! That's a really nice vehicle you have!

Update: Nissan quality seems to be slipping. Unfortunately, this Murano has visited the shop more often than the other two. I have noticed more road noise and the fit and finish is not up to par. Although I have always loved the seats and the engine, I am sadly parting ways with this Murano. This is my third Murano, fifth Nissan, and unfortunately, my last Nissan.

I regret purchasing this car as my second full purchase. Despite being told that there were front and rear cameras, there is only a rear camera that freezes constantly. Additionally, the Nissan connect never works and the car starts to have issues after 30,000 miles. Furthermore, every time I use my seatbelt, a strange purple lint comes out and ruins my clothes. The trunk on my model is not automatic, despite my specific request for certain specs. While the car drives and controls well, I cannot recommend this purchase to anyone. My previous purchase, the Nissan Rogue, was a much better investment.

I recently purchased a 2020 Murano, but unfortunately, I found the middle console to be too big and restrictive for my knee movement. Although I did not notice this during the test drive, it became apparent during a longer drive of 30 minutes. Additionally, I experienced difficulty keeping the vehicle straight as it was wobbling all over the road. Despite this, the vehicle's exterior appearance was sharp and it had some great safety features. The front seat was comfortable for my hiney, but unfortunately, due to the pain in my knee, I could not continue to drive it. I believe that if the console was smaller, I would have had more movement for my knee. In the future, I plan to rent or do an overnight test drive before making a purchase.

This car tends to drift all over the road, so you need to hold the steering wheel tightly to feel in control of the vehicle. Unfortunately, the set up of the gas pedal and brake caused a lot of knee pain for me, and the big console in the middle did not allow for much knee movement. However, the technology was adequate, although no better than any other SUV I looked at. The stereo set up was unimpressive, and the location of the speakers was not well planned out. Despite these issues, I gave it 3 stars because it has a lot of great safety features.

I recently purchased a 2020 Murano Platinum AWD. While the car runs okay, I have noticed a flaw, or a bug, in the software with regards to the cruise control while descending down hill. With ICC engaged at 65 mph while descending down a hill, the car will speed up without any noticeable deceleration or breaking from the car. Unfortunately, this is a known issue with the 2019, 2020, and 2021 models. I contacted the Nissan dealer and they played it off as the car operating within design parameters. However, after complaining to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Nissan of America, I am hopeful that a solution will be found for this software flaw in the ICC. If you are experiencing this issue, know that you are not alone. Many people have reported this problem and are coming up with good workarounds.
