The Nissan Murano (Japanese: 日産・ムラーノ, Hepburn: Nissan Murāno) is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Nissan since May 2002 for the 2003 model year, and currently in its third generation.

As Nissan's first crossover SUV for the United States and Canada, the Murano was designed at Nissan America in La Jolla, California, and was based on the Nissan FF-L platform shared with the third generation Altima. The European version of the Murano began sales in 2004.

The Murano was Nissan's only crossover SUV in the United States until September 2007, when the Rogue went on sale. In Canada, the X-Trail had been on sale as Nissan's second car based SUV since 2004 as a model for 2005; it was replaced by the 2008 Rogue at the end of 2007. The Murano is sized between the Pathfinder and the now defunct Xterra (which was replaced by the Rogue as a compact SUV). A convertible variant, the Murano CrossCabriolet, was available for the second-generation model for the model years of 2011 to 2014.

The nameplate Murano derives from the Italian islands of Murano and the namesake Murano art glass for which the islands are widely known.

Common 2004 Nissan Murano problems

The 2004 Nissan Murano has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. The top three complaints are transmission failure, broken door handle, and engine failure due to faulty catalytic converter.

Transmission failure is a significant issue in the 2004 Nissan Murano, with costs reaching up to $2,900 and occurring at about 98,000 miles. This problem is the most complained-about issue in the engine category, which also includes engine, transmission, and electrical problems. The transmission failure is characterized by acceleration consistency issues and slipping gears.

The broken door handle is another common problem in the 2004 Nissan Murano, costing $100 and occurring at about 83,000 miles. This issue is the most complained-about problem in the exterior and interior category, which focuses on body/paint and accessories. Other problems in this category include extreme rust on the undercarriage and chrome peeling off the grille.

Engine failure due to faulty catalytic converter is also a common problem in the 2004 Nissan Murano, costing $5,800 and occurring at about 105,000 miles. This problem is the second most complained-about issue in the engine category. The catalytic converter failure can lead to engine performance issues and increased emissions.

In addition to these top three complaints, the 2004 Nissan Murano has also received complaints about the sun visor breaking, seat frame breaking, power locks getting stuck, brake and battery lights randomly coming on, console buttons falling off, excessive oil consumption, oil leaking, cracked manifold, loss of acceleration, and the car dying while idling or driving. The NHTSA has also received multiple complaints about the seats, with the most complaints being about the seats breaking.

While the 2004 Nissan Murano has these common problems, it is important to note that the model has improved significantly in later years. The 2020 Murano model, for example, has received positive reviews and has vastly improved from the 2004 disaster.

  • Summary: I’ve changed the timing belt, brakes, batteries, fuel injectors and all and still after thirty minutes of me driving Nissan Murano 2004 I have to continuously push on the gas to get the car to move . My car always has a smell of burning rubber after a long period of time driving it . I then pull over for 20/25 minutes to let the car reset or cool down I guess and then when I turn it on it drives ok until the next 25/30 minutes go by. I’ve gotten two alternators brand new and I’m still having the same issues . When I slow down to come to a full stop it feels like my car is jerking on a chain slowly. When I put the car in neutral to come to a stop it doesn’t make the car tremble . I hope and pray I can get some answers or help to guide me in the right direction . I’ve spent over $2000 in labor to this car to still have the same problem.

Negative 2004 Nissan Murano car reviews

  1. Kadin Stark 2024-05-27

Knowing Nissans the way I do, I was hoping for a better experience. Although the drive was great in the beginning, I did encounter an alternator issue that almost caused a serious accident. Unfortunately, I have been experiencing a number of mechanical problems and I'm starting to think it may be a lemon with a little sugar on top. On the bright side, I have received many compliments and inquiries about the handling and various other topics.

  2. Ellsworth Mraz 2024-05-18

I have experienced several issues with my Murano despite having only driven it for 1500 miles. These include a rattling A pillar, a shifting driver's seat during acceleration and deceleration, a buzzing gas door actuator, and an alignment issue. Although I took it back to the dealer, they were only able to fix two of the four problems. Despite providing them with technical service bulletins, they were unable to duplicate the problem. As a result, I have lost faith in Nissan/Infiniti and will not be a customer in the future. It is disappointing to encounter so many small issues with this car.

  3. Henderson Farrell 2024-03-23

We test drove the Highlander, Pilot, and Murano, and ultimately fell in love with the Murano. It offered the best deal for all the features we were looking for, and we were impressed with its handling and sleek design - a true prototype for other crossover SUVs to follow. However, we have unfortunately experienced some major issues with the car, including problems with the front control arms/transverse links ($1000), the driver visor (which has been replaced but went bad again due to a design defect - $350), the front motor mount ($500), the AC (which blows smelly socks air due to poor condensation drainage design), and the oil cooler seal. Despite these issues, we remain hopeful that the Murano will continue to meet our needs and expectations.

Positive 2004 Nissan Murano car reviews

  1. Deontae Schumm 2025-01-06

When considering purchasing this vehicle, it's important to check for any accident damage. You can do this by reviewing reports and having a mechanic inspect the car. It's normal for expenses to increase as mileage goes up, but this is typical for any car. At 145K miles, the transmission was replaced, although the exact reason is unknown. It's possible that this was due to the early mortality problems of many CVT transmissions. It's worth noting that this generation of CVT seems to be the Achilles Heel of the Murano. After many years of use, we donated this vehicle to the Girl Scouts, not because of any problems, but because we were moving to an electric car.

  2. Francis Homenick 2024-10-29

Purchased new, serviced as needed, and now at 96,000 plus miles, running like a top!

  3. Casper Yost 2024-08-28

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a great experience with your car! It's wonderful to hear that it ran like a dream for 6 years. I hope that your next car will be just as fantastic!

  4. Ceasar Spencer 2024-08-19

I really love this SUV! I've been wanting one for two years and I still can't believe it's mine every time I walk up to it. The acceleration is great and the ride (SE) is smooth. My wife and I were looking to move on from the minivan era and the Murano quickly became our top choice. It handles exceptionally well in all conditions and has great pickup, even when climbing hills. The leather seats and touring package make for a comfortable ride. We typically drive about 10k miles per year and the mileage has been acceptable, averaging about 20-21 mpg. The car is a real head-turner when it's all polished up. However, we have had some trouble with the Bose CD player and the sun visors, having to replace 4 of them so far. Additionally, the engine mount cracked and maintenance costs have been high. Despite these issues, the CVT has performed well.
