2019 Nissan Murano problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Murano (Japanese: 日産・ムラーノ, Hepburn: Nissan Murāno) is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Nissan since May 2002 for the 2003 model year, and currently in its third generation.

As Nissan's first crossover SUV for the United States and Canada, the Murano was designed at Nissan America in La Jolla, California, and was based on the Nissan FF-L platform shared with the third generation Altima. The European version of the Murano began sales in 2004.

The Murano was Nissan's only crossover SUV in the United States until September 2007, when the Rogue went on sale. In Canada, the X-Trail had been on sale as Nissan's second car based SUV since 2004 as a model for 2005; it was replaced by the 2008 Rogue at the end of 2007. The Murano is sized between the Pathfinder and the now defunct Xterra (which was replaced by the Rogue as a compact SUV). A convertible variant, the Murano CrossCabriolet, was available for the second-generation model for the model years of 2011 to 2014.

The nameplate Murano derives from the Italian islands of Murano and the namesake Murano art glass for which the islands are widely known.

Common 2019 Nissan Murano problems

The 2019 Nissan Murano has been known for a few common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues primarily concern the vehicle's forward collision warning, speed control, airbags, and some design elements.

  • Speed Control: The speed control, or cruise control, has also been a source of frustration for some drivers. There have been instances where the cruise control disengages without warning, which can be inconvenient and potentially dangerous, especially during long drives.
  • Airbags: Several consumers have reported issues with the airbags, particularly the passenger airbag light coming on even when an adult passenger is sitting in the respective seat. This can lead to confusion and potential safety risks if the airbag does not deploy as expected during an accident.
  • Design Elements: Some design elements, such as the hood's lip at the end that directs sunlight into the driver's field of vision, have been criticized for potentially increasing the likelihood of a crash due to blurred vision. Additionally, the windshield has been found to chip very easily, which may result in more accidents with injuries .

These issues, while concerning, do not seem to be widespread, as the 2019 Nissan Murano has only had one recall related to a lack of backup camera display images, which can be solved with a software update at a Nissan dealership.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-08-21
  • VIN: 5N1AZ2MS9KN
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: In September of 2019, I leased a new 2019 Nissan Murano Platinum from Missoula Nissan in Missoula, Montana. Not long after purchasing the new auto, I noticed that when driving down a hill, the cruise control released and the vehicle sped up as though free-wheeling. The engine brake (compression) did not activate nor did the transmission shift down. The hills I am referring to are gentle down-hills on straight-aways. They are not steep or windy. There is absolutely no danger in driving a speed limit of 70 mph on a two-lane highway going downhill as are many highways in Montana or doing the speed limit of 80 mph downhill on Interstate 15 through the State of Utah. What is dangerous and unsafe, however, is the speed of the vehicle increasing by 10 to 15 + mph within a short distance because the cruise control fails At that point it is necessary to ride the brakes, manually shift down or risk a speeding ticket or a serious accident. In the many vehicles we have owned, the cruise control operated to keep the vehicle at or near the set speed even while going downhill. When I posted the issue on CarGurus website nine other people complained of the same problems with new Nissans. This is truly dangerous to an unsuspecting driver. Because I winter in Arizona, I took the vehicle to Jim Click Nissan in Tucson and explained the problem. After a road test the shop foreman agreed the cruise control was acting as I had described and didn’t feel it was right. However, Nissan headquarters advised that the cruise control was supposed to operate that way. Once I returned to Helena, Montana, last spring, I took the car to Kenny Simpson Nissan. That service department also agreed that the cruise control was not operating correctly but again Nissan argued that it was supposed to operate that way. So two dealers reproduced and confirmed the problem but the manufacturer takes the position that it is supposed to operate in this extremely unsafe manner.

They said it was not covered under warranty. September 2021 at 18000 miles the waring light and the 'Malfunction warning' text both displayed without driver input. Normal driving condition and no vehicle in front of me to hint potential collision so there is no reason to alert driver.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-09
  • VIN: 5n1az2mj6kn
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: When I leave the parking structure at my office, my front emergency brake gets triggered. Today was the third time this happened. From my research, there are several class action lawsuits. We leased the car in 10/2019, but purchased it around 01/2021. 1)The first time it happened it, the brake pedal automatically released from under my foot, slammed on the brake and came to a screeching stop. I was not going down, but on a level wrapping around. I was driving less than 10 mph in the structure. Thankfully, no one was around me. If someone was behind, they would have definitely hit me. 2) Second was a few weeks ago. Again, same parking structure, but going down. No one was around. The car beeped a few times and saying it triggered the "driving aids" and car quickly braked automatically and screeched, but not like the first time. 3) Third time today. It didn't even beep and screeched. Again, same parking structure going down. It screeched and jerked the brake, but not as forcefully as the first time. Each time, I have pulled over and shut off this "feature." However, the feature is set to be automatically "on" and have to manually shut it off at each time the car is restarted.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-11-01
  • VIN: 5N1AZ2MJ9KN
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: STARTING IN NOVEMBER 2020, MY 2019 MURANO HAS AN UNEXPLAINED CLUNKING/CLATTER NOISE WHEN GOING OVER SMALL BUMPS IN THE ROAD. IT SOUNDS AS IF IT IS THE SWAY BAR BUSHINGS BUT THE DEALERS ARE NOT PROPERLY DIAGNOSING IT. THE TECHNICIANS TAKE A RIDE WITH ME IN THE VEHICLE AND CLEARLY HEAR AND ACKNOWLEDGE AN ABNORMAL NOISE. HOWEVER THEY PROCEED TO DRIVE ANOTHER USED VEHICLE AND DETERMINE IT IS NORMAL BEHAVIOR. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THERE WAS NO ABNORMAL SUSPENSION NOISES WHEN IT WAS NEW AND ANY NEW ONE ALSO LACKS THE NOISE. ONE DEALER PROCEEDED TO SAY IT WAS BECAUSE THE POWER STEERING IS FUEL INJECTED. NOT ONLY IS THAT STATEMENT FALSE IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE SINCE THE POWER STEERING IS HYDRAULIC. NISSAN HAS BEEN INFORMED BUT DOESN'T TAKE RESPONSIBILITY, AND ALSO REFUSE TO REPURCHASE OR REPLACE MY VEHICLE. OTHERS ON THE ONLINE MURANO FORUMS SEE MY VIDEOS OF THE NOISE AND ALSO SAY THEY HAVE THAT ISSUE AND DEALERS PROVIDE THE SAME "NORMAL BEHAVIOR" REASONS. I FEEL THIS SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED AS A POTENTIAL MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND A POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUE. A VEHICLE WITH 20,000 MILES SHOULD NOT HAVE ANY SUSPENSION ISSUES WHEN THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF FOUL PLAY. I AM NOW HAVING TO PAY OUT OF POCKET TO HAVE A SUSPENSION SHOP DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE.

HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER MULTIPLE TIMES FOR DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR WITH NO RESOLUTION. FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-11-01
  • VIN: 5N1AZ2MS3KN
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: THE PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE IS THAT THE AEB WARNING LIGHT KEEPS COMING ON AND THEN RANDOMLY GOING OFF ON THE DASH WHILE I'M DRIVING, AND I FEEL UNSAFE IN THIS VEHICLE NOT KNOWING WHETHER THE AEB AND FRONT END/REAR END CRASH AVOIDANCE SYSTEMS ARE WORKING OR ARE NOT WORKING. I TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO MY LOCAL DEALER, MICHAEL JORDAN NISSAN IN DURHAM, NC, ON MONDAY NOVEMBER 16, 2020, TO FIND OUT WHAT WAS WRONG. THE AEB INDICATOR LIGHT WAS NOT ON WHEN I DROVE IN. THE DEALER'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT COULD NOT ASCERTAIN IF ANYTHING WAS WRONG OR NOT, OR WHY THE LIGHT WAS COMING ON AND GOING OFF, OR PROVIDE ME WITH OPTIONS. AS I LEFT THE DEALERSHIP TO GO TO A DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENT, THE AEB WARNING LIGHT WENT ON--I COULD NOT RETURN TO THE DEALERSHIP, WHERE I HAD BEEN FOR ALMOST 3 HOURS, BECAUSE OF MY DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENT. I FEEL UNSAFE IN THIS VEHICLE AS I NEVER KNOW IF THE AEB SYSTEM IS OR IS NOT WORKING.

2019 Nissan Murano recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2019 Nissan Murano.

2019-09-12
  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Nissan Altima, Armada, Frontier, Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, NV, NV200, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Titan Diesel, Versa Note and Versa Sedan vehicles, as well as Infiniti Q50, Q60, QX30 and QX80 vehicles. Additionally included are 2019 Nissan GT-R and Taxi and Infiniti QX50, QX60, Q70, Q70L vehicles. The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
  • Consequence: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners in phases, having dealers update the back-up camera settings software, free of charge. The recall began November 11, 2019 and all affected VINs should be activated. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200.

Negative 2019 Nissan Murano car reviews

  1. Presley Cronin 2024-11-07

As someone who has owned 4 Muranos previously, we were disappointed to find that some of the features we liked before were no longer available, such as the Low shift ability and All wheel lock. We were also surprised by the reduced towing capacity and the fact that roof crossbars are no longer standard. Additionally, we found the GPS system to be substandard compared to other vehicles, including my Garmin GPS. Unfortunately, we have also experienced issues with dust leaking in around the doors and lift gate when driving on dirt roads. While we could go on, we are sad to say that this may be our last Murano. We hope that Nissan will take these concerns into consideration for future models.

  2. Cloyd Spencer 2024-10-10

I owned a Murano from 2011 to 2019 and had a great experience with it. So, I decided to buy the new 2019 Murano. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing some issues with the car's front wheel making grinding noises when in reverse, even though the car has less than 1000 miles on it.

  3. Verner Dibbert 2024-06-24

I have been interested in the 2019 Murano since it was released. Currently, I am driving a 2017 Maxima Platinum, but due to recent knee issues, I find it difficult to get out of the car. Therefore, I am looking for a crossover that is higher than the Maxima. Yesterday, I test drove what I was told was a Platinum at a local dealership. The acceleration in the Murano was more than adequate, and the handling was good. The Murano was also far quieter than my Maxima, which is a big plus. Maybe it's the tires, but I can't say for sure. My biggest concern is with the info/entertainment system. The system in the 2019 Murano appears to be almost identical to my 2017 Maxima, which is a good thing. It's a Bose sound system, and the interface through the main touch screen seems to be the same. Unfortunately, the system does have a few differences. There is no Bose centerpoint option in the sound settings, no option for adjusting the surround sound, and no option for the driver's sound stage. This was very disappointing. As I said, I don't know if it's because SXM wasn't turned on, but that shouldn't make a difference. The FM portion of the sound system didn't sound as good as the Bose system in my Maxima from the short amount of listening I did. But the one item that is a deal breaker for me is that there is no control knob for the infotainment screen near the center armrest. In the Maxima, the knob and surrounding buttons allow you to control most of the different parts of the infotainment screen and system. Without a control knob, you have to reach for the touch screen or reach even farther to a physical knob to the right of the screen to scroll through different selections. This appears to be a significant misstep to me.I think it would have been better if Nissan had included a control wheel at the end of the center armrest to make it easier for the driver to control the infotainment system without having to reach for the touch screen or knobs adjacent to the screen. It would have been even better if they had put a similar or equivalent type of control on the steering wheel. Unfortunately, they didn't. Although voice control is an option, I personally find it frustrating and time-consuming. Since I use the infotainment system constantly while driving my Maxima, the lack of an easy-to-reach control wheel is a significant omission for me. It may not be as important to someone else. In summary, the Murano drove adequately with decent acceleration and handling, but I found the steering to be a bit heavier than regular mode in my Maxima. I should add that I couldn't find any performance controls on the Murano. Therefore, I have decided to remove the Murano from my list for now. I would consider the AX50, but it doesn't have Apple Airplay or Android Auto. I don't understand why Nissan has omitted these features. If the Murano had the same infotainment features as my 2017 Maxima, I would probably consider it further. But for now, it's not an option.

  4. Sanford Orn 2024-04-23

I will begin by addressing the various issues that have arisen with the vehicle. The strut mounts and sway bar bushings have been replaced, as well as the wiper motor and heated seat switch. Additionally, the passenger seat fan required attention. It is worth noting that these issues occurred while the vehicle had only between 8 and 15,000 miles on it. Despite these challenges, I am confident that we can find a solution to ensure the vehicle is running smoothly and efficiently.

Positive 2019 Nissan Murano car reviews

  1. Presley Collins 2024-11-16

This 2019 Nissan Murano SL is a great car with leather seating that is incredibly comfortable. I have been getting 25-28 miles per gallon on the highway and 20-22 miles per gallon in the city, which is fantastic. I have owned this SUV for 3 years and have had no real issues, making it a reliable choice. While the rear seating carpet was cut short for some reason, it doesn't affect the overall quality of the car. Although smaller SUVs such as the Honda CR-V or the Toyota RAV4 have more cargo space, this car still has many standard features that are optional on other SUVs. I get the oil changed every 5000 miles and the original tires have 28,000 miles on them, so they will probably need replacement at 40,000 miles. Overall, this is a very nice car for the price and I highly recommend it.

I haven't found any cons... This product is loaded with pros!

This vehicle is both comfortable and fuel efficient, without the need for a turbo 4 cylinder engine. Additionally, it is very easy to get in and out of. The S and SV models are particularly great value.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I bought my Murano back in 2015 and it's been such a comfortable ride ever since. It's perfect for those long road trips and I couldn't be happier with it!
