The Nissan Murano (Japanese: 日産・ムラーノ, Hepburn: Nissan Murāno) is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Nissan since May 2002 for the 2003 model year, and currently in its third generation.

As Nissan's first crossover SUV for the United States and Canada, the Murano was designed at Nissan America in La Jolla, California, and was based on the Nissan FF-L platform shared with the third generation Altima. The European version of the Murano began sales in 2004.

The Murano was Nissan's only crossover SUV in the United States until September 2007, when the Rogue went on sale. In Canada, the X-Trail had been on sale as Nissan's second car based SUV since 2004 as a model for 2005; it was replaced by the 2008 Rogue at the end of 2007. The Murano is sized between the Pathfinder and the now defunct Xterra (which was replaced by the Rogue as a compact SUV). A convertible variant, the Murano CrossCabriolet, was available for the second-generation model for the model years of 2011 to 2014.

The nameplate Murano derives from the Italian islands of Murano and the namesake Murano art glass for which the islands are widely known.

Common 2012 Nissan Murano problems

The Nissan Murano 2012 is a popular midsize crossover SUV, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues by owners of this car

  1. Driver Side Seat: One of the most common problems with the Nissan Murano 2012 is the driver's side seat. The seat may shift or move when accelerating or braking, which can be uncomfortable and distracting for the driver. The issue is usually caused by the seat's adjustment mechanism, which can become loose or worn out over time. To fix this problem, the adjustment mechanism may need to be tightened or replaced.
  2. Motor Mounts: Another common problem with the Nissan Murano 2012 is the motor mounts. The motor mounts are responsible for holding the engine in place and absorbing vibrations. Over time, the motor mounts can become worn out or damaged, which can cause the engine to move around or vibrate excessively. This can lead to noise, decreased performance, and even damage to the engine or transmission. To fix this problem, the motor mounts may need to be replaced.
  3. EVAP Canister Vent Valve P0456: The EVAP canister vent valve P0456 is a code that indicates a problem with the vehicle's evaporative emission control system. This system is responsible for preventing fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. If the EVAP canister vent valve P0456 code is detected, it may indicate a leak in the system or a problem with the valve itself. To fix this problem, the valve may need to be replaced or repaired.
  4. Timing Chain Guides and Tensioners: The timing chain guides and tensioners are responsible for keeping the engine's timing chain in place and properly tensioned. Over time, the guides and tensioners can become worn out or damaged, which can cause the timing chain to become misaligned or to jump teeth. This can lead to engine damage, decreased performance, and even engine failure. To fix this problem, the guides and tensioners may need to be replaced.
  5. Throttle Body: The throttle body is responsible for controlling the amount of air that enters the engine. Over time, the throttle body can become dirty or clogged, which can lead to decreased performance, rough idling, and even stalling. To fix this problem, the throttle body may need to be cleaned or replaced.

These are just some of the most common problems with the Nissan Murano 2012. If you own this car or are considering buying one, it's important to be aware of these issues and to have them addressed promptly by a qualified mechanic. Regular maintenance and inspections can also help prevent these problems from occurring in the first place.

  • VIN: JN8AZ1MU7CW

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-13
  • VIN: JN8AZ1MW3CW
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I purchased 2012 Nissan Murano in Jul 2012. Recently the Airbag light is on and keeps flashing when start the car. It happened since 6 months ago. I sent my car to the local Nissan Dealer, they charged me $149 diagnostic fee + $1500 to replace the Airbag DIAG unit under the center console. After the replacement, the airbag light is still on and flashing. My car cannot pass the annual inspection because of the airbag light. It's a big safety concern. The dealer told me I need to get the passenger seat bottom sensor replaced, the pars has been discontinued. I am very surprised the airbag is related safety issue, Why Nissan discontinued the parts? And I google this issue, many Nissan car owners have the same airbag light issue. This is the most common issue and related to the customer safety. Nissan should recall it. I paid more than $1500 dollar, cannot get my problem fixed. It's unacceptable!

AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-31
  • VIN: JN8AZ1MW5CW
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
  • Summary: 2012 Nissan Murano. Airbag red light always blinking plus passenger seat airbag says it’s “off”. Loads of similar complaints on web sites. Took to Annapolis Nilsson on Riva Road today. They were very aware of issue but said there is no recall. So both airbags will not inflate, not just passenger seat. Web complaints confirm this with actual accidents and there is no recall? Dealership said NONE of the parts including seat are available any more(I would guess because they all failed) but were told if we found the parts and seat at a used parts place then the dealership would put in for a cost but there would NOT be any warranty! Really? There should be a recall on this issue, how can we get this?

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-03
  • VIN: JN8AZ1MW2CW
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I have a 95 yrs. old Mother who I transport to appointments etc. and I am not feeling safe in our 2012 Nissan Murano due to the airbag malfunctioning. I have read numerous reports that state if there was ever an accident with these airbags that they would not potentially work or deploy and also that they could possibly release for just any reason at all and these two reasons alone are enough to know that this is a safety hazard and could cost both my Mother and myself, our lives. I have read many complaints regarding these same airbags located on the passenger side of our vehicle. I am asking that this problem be resolved immediately because it is very dangerous and disturbing. Please contact me and my Mother at 937-380-7064.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

2022-03-19

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-18
  • VIN: JN8AZ1MW6CW
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The airbag indicator light on dash blinks once, then five rapid blinks continuously. Took to Nissan dealership for repair. Charged $135 for diagnostics. They claimed the passenger seat air bag and bottom seat cushion would need to be replaced. That if the airbag indicator light was flashing none of the airbags work. The quote for repair was $2,884.98 before taxes. This is a 2012 Nissan Murano so a very expensive repair for a safety feature on a 10 year old car. Declined the repair. Dealership claims this is not a recall. It should be a recall. And why does one faulty airbag embedded in a passenger seat disable the remaining air bags? The Murano mileage is 49607. The airbag error code is B1018. Very frustrating to have a low mileage car with the airbag system inoperable and very expensive to repair. This faulty part should be repaired by Nissan free to owners to enable the safety features to operate normally.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-17
  • VIN: JN8AZ1MW3CW
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Passenger air bag is not working because of the seat sensor, (error code B1018 occ sensor fail). The 2012s have not been recalled, they did recall 2013 models(??). According to the blogs, this is a big problem with the 2012s. At this time dealership requested that I pay up front for the part, seat sensor $2,000.00. That was back in November 2021. Currently still waiting on the part. I have called customer service at Nissan; they were no help.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-04-15
  • VIN: JN8AZ1MW3CW
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: While driving, the driver's side visor fell down and would not go back up and stay in place. I contacted the Nissan dealer about this issue and was told it was my problem to replace it. I bought my 2012 Murano used in April 2020 with 74k miles on it. The visor issue happened within the first 30 days of owning the vehicle.

AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-26
  • VIN: JN8AZ1MU4CW
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
  • Summary: SRS/AIRBAGS LIGHT FLASHING PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF. The airbag will not deploy if in a crash. Nissan code B1018 is diagnosed as needing the whole passenger seat replace due to the occupancy sensor in passenger seat. Nissan quoted repair at $5000.00 to replace. Called Nissan and started case 45708222 on 2/4/22. Was told no safety recall on the 2012 Murano and Murano is too far out for Nissan to assist. In researching Nissan has had this safety issue since 2008 and there have been recalls on certain models but not 2012. I feel Nissan such stand behind this type of safety issue of this magnitude. The vehicle was purchased new and probably 75% of the 61,500 miles there was no passenger in the seat. What factor has to come into play for a safety recall to be issued? Is it number of fatalities that occur for the occupancy sensor not deploying the airbags? I also tried to find out if Nissan has stopped using this type seat/sensors in the new models. Customer rep told me I needed to ask the dealer. The dealer had told me to ask Nissan so I'm at a loss on whether Nissan has changed to avoid this safety issue. I've always been pleased with Nissan and was considering trading this Murano for a 2022 Platinum but since this has occurred my opinion is changing on the Nissan. Nissan has had a safety issue with these sensors since 2008 and forward. Nissan should have recalled any make/model that is/was equipped with the faulty occupancy passenger airbag sensors that could/can fail and cause bodily harm or death. Or even at least compensate on some of the expense. This is just wrong.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-08
  • VIN: JN8AZ1MW5CW
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Could be an issue with ABS component. Car driving normally then when attempting to brake car slows but does not stop and driver needs to almost pin brake to floor to fully stop car. Car braking not acting as normal potentially putting driver at risk. No warning message. Car was brought to independent mechanic and they replaced rotors, pads and did system flush. Reason for report is in researching this issue I noticed there was a 2009 recall for the Murano with a similar issue. Not sure if this is just a part that is worn due to service or something similar to the 2009 issue. Issue happened again after the service described above but seems to de driving normally at this time.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-01
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JN8AZ1MU3CW
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Car had a collision that totaled the car on 1/1/2022 & no air bags deployed. Officers on scene were very concerned that this safety feature did not engage due to the impact. The other vehicle involved air bags deployed but not ours.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-13
  • VIN: JN8AZ1MU3CW
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Airbag waring indicator light came on. Passenger seat airbag disabled warning light came on as well. Performed a reset, and both lights stayed off for a few days, then came back on again. Took car to dealer who would not even do a brief check that day, scheduled appointment for nearly 3 weeks later. Today the dealer gave us the Code B1018 and offered an estimate of over $4300 for repairs. With all the recalls of similar Nissan airbag devices, including 2013 Nissan Murano's, I am filing this complaint because there may also be a pattern of similar failures for 2012 Murano's. I have contacted the Nissan consumer complaint center, filed my concern, and advised them we would be notifying NHTSA as well as seeking potential legal remedies. Local dealer is 5 Star Nissan in Albany GA.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-01-07
  • VIN: JN8AZ1MU9CW
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: PASSENGER AIR BAG LIGHT CONTINUOUSLY FLASHES. CAR HAS 28,600 MILES AND ALMOST NEVER HAS HAD A PASSENGER IN THE SEAT. DRIVEN BY SINGLE, WIDOWED DRIVER. CAR IS ROUTINELY SERVICED AT DEALER. GOT A QUOTE OF OVER $5200 TO REPAIR. I HAVE READ A FEW OTHER COMPLAINTS ONLINE FOR THIS MODEL WITH MUCH HIGHER MILEAGE. NISSAN SAYS THEY ARE NOT TAKING NOT RESPONSIBILITY AND I SHOULD CONTACT THIS AGENCY, $5200 IS ROUGHLY MORE THAN HALF OF THE VALUE OF THE CAR AND NON-REPAIR MAKES IT UNSAFE SHOULD AN OCCASIONAL PASSENGER SIT IN THE SIT AND ALMOST NON-SALABLE. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A SAFETY ISSUE.
2020-12-31

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-12-28
  • VIN: JN8AZ1MUXCW
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: WE RECENTLY BOUGHT AN OUT OF WARRANTY, AS IS 2012 NISSAN MURANO AND THE DASH AIRBAG LIGHT AND PASSENGER AIRBAG LIGHT ARE BOTH ON. THEY NEVER GO OFF AFTER THE INITIAL 7 SECOND WAIT TIME. VEHICLE IN MOTION OR STANDING STILL DOESN'T MATTER. I HAVE SCANNED FOR CODES AND B1018-00 KEEPS COMING BACK AFTER ATTEMPTING TO ERASE. NORMAL SIZED PEOPLE SIT IN THESE TWO SEATS AND USE THEIR SEAT BELTS RELIGIOUSLY SO "MISALIGNED SEATING" IS NOT THE CASE. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS AND A FEW OTHERS HAVE HAD THE EXACT PROBLEM. THIS IS A SAFETY ITEM THAT SHOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF BY NISSAN REGARDLESS OF MILEAGE AND SUCH BUT I'M SEEING THAT PEOPLE ARE GETTING A "OH WELL" KIND OF RESPONSE FROM NISSAN. IF THERE'S A CLASS ACTION SUIT TO GET IN, I WILL. I HAVE NOT CONTACTED NISSAN ABOUT THIS AS OF YET BUT WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO AT LEAST SPEND BIG DOLLARS TO GET IT SCANNED AND DIAGNOSED AT A DEALERSHIP.

2012 Nissan Murano recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2012 Nissan Murano.

2012-02-22
  • Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
  • Components: TIRES:PRESSURE MONITORING AND REGULATING SYSTEMS
  • Summary: NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2012 MURANO AND ROGUE VEHICLES, MANUFACTURED FROM NOVEMBER 23, 2011 THROUGH JANUARY 11, 2012. DURING ASSEMBLY, THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS) WAS NOT ACTIVATED. THUS, THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 138,”TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM.”
  • Consequence: A NON-ACTIVE TPMS CANNOT WARN A DRIVER THAT A TIRE IS UNDERINFLATED. UNDERINFLATED TIRES CAN RESULT IN TIRE OVERLOADING AND OVERHEATING, WHICH COULD LEAD TO A BLOWOUT AND POSSIBLE CRASH.
  • Remedy: ALL OF THE AFFECTED VEHICLES ARE STILL IN DEALER INVENTORY. DEALERS HAVE BEEN INSTRUCTED TO ACTIVATE ALL OF THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEMS.

Negative 2012 Nissan Murano car reviews

  1. Ibrahim Hartmann 2024-06-04

I'm not a fan of the driver's seat. Even after 2 years, it still bothers me. The leather seats cut into the back of my right leg. On a long road trip, my passengers complained that the back seats were uncomfortable. Unfortunately, I've had some repairs done, and today I found out that the control arm and tie rods need to be replaced at only 70,000 miles. The total cost is $1400. I think it's time to start saving for a new vehicle. I'm tired of dealing with a numb right leg.

  2. Javier Ward 2024-05-05

We appreciate the effort put into the leather seats, however, we found them to be stiff and not as comfortable as those in other vehicles such as Volvo, BMW, VW or Lexus. The cabin was quite noisy, especially on the highway, which was disappointing. Additionally, the rear view was compromised and seemed dangerous. The exterior design sacrificed size for a sleek look, making it more difficult to park and maneuver than it should be. We also found the navigation to be not very user-friendly. Unfortunately, the dealership did not provide accurate information about the pricing incentives, which led us to decide on this vehicle prematurely. Lastly, the MPG was disappointing. Given these factors, we would not consider purchasing this vehicle again.

  3. Jeffrey D'Amore 2024-01-26

I really liked the vehicle for its power, handling, and style. Unfortunately, the transmission went out at 117k miles and the cost to repair was $6,400! What some bs... Nissan suggested that the probable reason was due to the previous owner not changing the trans fluid every 30k miles.

  4. Agustin Schuppe 2024-01-19

I can understand why you were excited about this car, but it seems like the limited visibility out of the rear window and lack of leg room for backseat passengers were major drawbacks. It's a shame because it's a pretty car, but safety should always come first.

Positive 2012 Nissan Murano car reviews

  1. Adelbert Hintz 2024-10-25

We really appreciate our 2012 Nissan Murano, but unfortunately, we're having some trouble with the liftgate. We took it to a Nissan dealer today, but even after 3 hours, they couldn't get it open. It seems like we're stuck with a liftgate that just won't lift.

  2. Skylar Beahan 2024-10-03

As your kids grow up, it's natural to start thinking about replacing your old car. When I was in the same situation with my 8-year-old 2-door Solara convertible, I looked at both the Toyota Venza and Nissan Murano. While they were very similar in terms of major specs, the Murano's luxurious interior really stood out to me. I ended up getting the LE with the Platinum package, and I have to say, I'm really happy with my choice. While it's not as fun to drive as a 2-door sports car, it performs just fine on highways and local roads in terms of acceleration, cruising, and stopping. Plus, it feels really solid and stable, even when trucks are whizzing by. My kids absolutely love all the extra room, and my husband is a big fan of all the cool features. Overall, I'm really pleased with my decision to go with the Murano!

  3. Cameron Lebsack 2024-09-26

I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed the ride of this car! It sounds like it handled the snow storm really well, which is great to hear. Overall, the driving experience seems to be very smooth. I understand that you miss the additional power that your Maxima had, even though they share the same engine.

  4. Alberto Tillman 2024-09-13

It's great to hear that you've been a loyal Nissan customer for so long! Your love for the Murano is evident in your description of its reliability, comfort, and timeless style. It's wonderful that you've had the opportunity to experience the latest features in the 2018 model, but it's clear that the 2012 Murano holds a special place in your heart. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

  5. Deron Lebsack 2024-07-12

The Murano is a go-getter type of vehicle that you can depend on. You'll find that the engine will outlast the body!
