2016 Nissan Murano problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Murano (Japanese: 日産・ムラーノ, Hepburn: Nissan Murāno) is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Nissan since May 2002 for the 2003 model year, and currently in its third generation.

As Nissan's first crossover SUV for the United States and Canada, the Murano was designed at Nissan America in La Jolla, California, and was based on the Nissan FF-L platform shared with the third generation Altima. The European version of the Murano began sales in 2004.

The Murano was Nissan's only crossover SUV in the United States until September 2007, when the Rogue went on sale. In Canada, the X-Trail had been on sale as Nissan's second car based SUV since 2004 as a model for 2005; it was replaced by the 2008 Rogue at the end of 2007. The Murano is sized between the Pathfinder and the now defunct Xterra (which was replaced by the Rogue as a compact SUV). A convertible variant, the Murano CrossCabriolet, was available for the second-generation model for the model years of 2011 to 2014.

The nameplate Murano derives from the Italian islands of Murano and the namesake Murano art glass for which the islands are widely known.

Common 2016 Nissan Murano problems

The 2016 Nissan Murano has been praised for its attractive design, spacious interior, and comfortable ride. However, there are some common problems that have been reported by owners of this vehicle.

One of the most significant issues reported by owners is related to the transmission. Some owners have experienced issues with the transmission not properly picking up from reverse (R) to drive (D). This problem occurs when the driver does not come to a full stop in reverse and gives it 1-2 seconds before shifting to drive. This can result in a rough or delayed transition, which can be concerning for drivers.

Another common problem reported by owners of the 2016 Nissan Murano is related to the infotainment system. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system going blank and rebooting while driving, which can be particularly concerning if the driver is on a phone call or using the GPS.

Other issues reported by owners of the 2016 Nissan Murano include noises and leaks, brakes, steering and suspension, climate system, engine electrical, and electrical accessories. Some owners have reported issues with noises coming from the suspension or steering system, as well as leaks from various parts of the vehicle.

Overall, while the 2016 Nissan Murano has many positive attributes, it is important for potential buyers to be aware of these common problems and to consider the potential costs of repairs and maintenance when purchasing this vehicle.

Is there any recalls on a 2016 Nissan Murano?

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2016 Murano vehicles manufactured December 17, 2015, to February 11, 2016, and 2016 Maxima vehicles manufactured November 25, 2015, to February 12, 2016 and equipped with an antilock braking system (ABS) and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC).

What year was a bad Murano?

Quick Answer: The Nissan Murano years to avoid include 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2015. While that might seem like a long and daunting list, it's not as bad as it sounds. The biggest issue with Muranos is a faulty door handle. As such, it's a relatively easy and inexpensive repair.

Is Nissan Murano a good reliable car?

The Nissan Murano has scored well on all major reliability ratings over the years. RepairPal gave it a 3.5 out of 5, ranking it 20th out of the 26 vehicles in its segment.

How many miles can a 2016 Nissan Murano last?

While the Murano isn't a total standout of a crossover, it's more than a decent family cruiser. Fortunately, the Murano is also a likely candidate for the 200k miles club. With proper care and maintenance, the Murano can reach between 180,000 to 200,000 miles and up to 13 years of service.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-08
  • VIN: 5N1CZ2MG8GN
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: The Nissan Murano’s were recalled back in 2020 stating their CVT was causing stalling issues mid driving and overheating in extreme weather (heat). I complained to Nissan prior to this recall and was told it was filter issue then a battery issue. Of course if was neither. The recall was completed, however for the past year and half my Nissan Murano Hybrid stalls when the air condition is on during the summer. The car drives fine in the winter and late fall. I have taken my vehicle to 2 Nissan dealerships Owings Mills and Ellicott City wanted to ensure of the issue. Both came back with the same answer, for the Consumer rep Ali suggested getting a second opinion and I informed him I did. The Hybrid CVT is overheating mechanical failure due to a part inside the transmission. Nissan refuses to fix stating I need to pay $11,000 for a new transmission to fix the issue. The service rep John stated no other Murano has ever had this happen and of course they no longer make my year (2016). I have contacted Nissan Consumer line twice and was informed they will not be doing a good will either. The cost is so high was told because they have to build a new one. I believe NIssan knew of this problem and ignored and was hoping the recall would fix the shudder and shut off of the vehicle. Another recall needs to be done on CVT’s for the brand Nissan and should be responsible for fixing this.

  • Summary: After opening my hood to check the engine oil, the main hood latch would not engage, to keep the hood down, the only thing holding the hood is secondary latch. I was over at my uncle's house when this happened and could not take the freeway home fearing that the hood might pop up while driving at a higher speed than on the city streets. This is very unsafe especially when driving and there are other drivers. There is no warning it is going to happen. This is my teen's designated vehicle and we have another teen who will be driving this car soon. We took the car back to the dealer just a few days after purchasing to have it checked out. THey kept it for several days but couldn't find any issue. We picked up the the car back but after a few weeks the engine cut out twice and we took it back in. This time, there also happens to be a small oil leak. They said something about replacing the bank2/banking cellunoid and it might be a timing issue.

SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-19
  • VIN: 5N1AZ2MH5GN
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: I recently brought my 2016 Nissan Murano to the Nissan service department and asked them to check the driver's side heated seat as it was not working. I was notified by the Nissan service department that the heated seat module had melted and that they needed to disconnect the component because it was a safety concern. It was very concerning to learn that the heated seat component could have possibly caused personal harm to anyone driving my vehicle. I reached out to Nissan in an effort to have them fix the defect and they refused to fix the vehicle free of charge. I have also researched this defect online and there seems to be a pattern of this defect happening in other vehicles of this model and year. I believe that this is a serious safety issue and that Nissan should be investigating the heated seat components on these vehicles and fix the component, so they are safe and in working order.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-03-18
  • VIN: 5N1AZ2MH4GN
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEATS
  • Summary: 2015-2019 NISSAN MURANOS HAVE AN ON-GOING ELECTRICAL HAZARD WITH THE CLIMATE CONTROLLED SEATS. THE ELECTRICAL HARNESS CONNECTOR DIRECTLY UNDER THE SEAT WILL FAIL AND ACTUALLY GET SO HOT IT WILL MELT THE PLASTIC PIECES! IN FACT, NISSAN HAS ISSUED IT'S OWN 15 PAGE SERVICE BULLETIN WARNING TO ITS DEALERS ON THE FIRE DANGER (EL18-035, REFERENCE NTB19-004, DATED 17 JANUARY 2019). THIS BULLETIN GRAPHICALLY SHOWS PICTURES OF HOW THE HARNESS CONNECTOR AND THE SEAT CONTROL UNIT WILL GET SO HOT THEY WILL MELT AND FAIL. IT ALSO DETAILS HOW LOCAL DEALERS SHOULD REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE CONNECTOR AND EVEN HOW THEY SHOULD CHARGE NISSAN BACK FOR THE REPAIR (PAGE 15 - PRIMARY PART LINE CLAIM). MY 2016 NISSAN MURANO SUFFERED THE SAME DRIVERS SEAT ELECTRICAL FAILURE RECENTLY. I VISUALLY VERIFIED THE DAMAGED (MELTED) CONNECTOR UNDER THE SEAT AND CONTACTED MY LOCAL NISSAN DEALER (YOUNGBLOOD NISSAN, SPRINGFIELD MO.). I PROVIDED THEM THE NISSAN ALERT INFORMATION. THE DEALER IS REFUSING TO FIX THE KNOWN FAILURE UNLESS THEY ARE PAID FOR THE SERVICE WORK (ESTIMATED IS OVER $300.00)! GIVEN THAT THIS FIRE HAZARD COVERS FOUR YEARS WORTH OF NISSAN MURANO PRODUCTION AND THE 2016-2019 TITANS, NISSAN SHOULD FIX THE DEFECTIVE PARTS FOR FREE. WHILE IN MY CASE THERE WAS NO ACTUAL FIRE OR DAMAGE BEYOND THE MELTED ELECTRICAL PARTS AND LOSS OF THE SEAT CLIMATE CONTROL FEATURE..I HAVE LEFT THE DEFECTIVE PLUG DISCONNECTED, STILL LEAVES ME VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THEY SAFETY OF MYSELF AND MY FAMILY. I HAVE ATTACHED IMAGES OF BOTH THE INTERNAL NISSAN SERVICE BULLETIN AND AN IMAGE OF MY MELTED AND DEFECTIVE ELECTRICAL PLUG. THANK YOU.

  • VIN: 5N1AZ2MH2GN
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEATS
  • Summary: AS WE WERE DRIVING ON A CITY STREET OUR 2016 NISSAN MURANO WE COULD SMELL PLASTIC MELTING OR BURNING WHILE HAVING OUR DRIVER SEAT HEATING SYSTEM TURNED ON. WE TURNED OFF THE HEATING SYSTEM. NOW, OUR DRIVER SEAT HEATER DOES NOT TURN ON AT ALL. WE PLAN TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A NISSAN DEALERSHIP TO GET IT DIAGNOSED, BUT AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ONLINE, WE COULD READ THAT MANY OTHERS DEALT WITH THIS ISSUE PREVIOUSLY. THE ELECTRICAL HARNESS UNDER THE DRIVERS SEAT GETS TOO HOT AND BEGINS TO MELT. IT SEEMS THAT THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE DUE TO A FAILURE OF THE ELETRICAL HARNESS. I WILL HAVE A SPECIFIC DIAGNOSIS SOON.*DT CONSUMER STATED VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THEY DID NOT HAVE A SOLUTION.

Negative 2016 Nissan Murano car reviews

  1. Juvenal Von 2024-11-05

This car has the nicest interior of all the mid-size luxury SUVs we looked at. It also has great fuel economy for its size and an extremely smooth ride. Unfortunately, we did experience some issues with the car. The tailgate stopped working, and although the dealer was able to reset it and it worked for a few more months, they later informed us that it would cost over 2k to fix. Additionally, the exhaust became very loud, and it turned out that the catalytic converter had come loose and needed to be removed and re-welded. Finally, the CVT transmission started malfunctioning at about 90k miles, and the dealer quoted us 7k to fix it. Unfortunately, we won't be purchasing this car again.

The car is comfortable, fun to drive, and has good technology. It's unfortunate that the sound system cannot be upgraded with a software update to include Apple/Samsung functions in the new model. I have experienced two issues with the car. Firstly, the fuel economy for the hybrid model is not as good as I expected. Secondly, I have had issues with the rear power hatch. The hatch issue is a known problem for this model, and there isn't an easy way to override the system for manual use without climbing into the trunk and manually releasing the latch every time you need to open it. Although it is poorly designed, I was able to have mine repaired under the manufacturer's warranty. However, it is likely to fail again, as noted by others who have had the auto hatch fail multiple times. If not covered, the repair was going to cost over $1100.

I recently purchased a 2016 Nissan Murano Platinum. Unfortunately, there is a noise that comes from behind the dashboard that can be quite bothersome. Despite my efforts, I have not been able to identify the source of the noise. At times, it seems like it may be the dash itself, while at other times it sounds like a cable wrapping around something. Despite this issue, I have found the car's technology to be impressive. The cameras work great and are especially handy in my small garage. Although the noise is still present, my family and I have learned to ignore it.

  4. Torrance Crist 2024-08-22

This vehicle has poor gas mileage and a loud engine noise for a V6, which sounds more like a 4-cylinder boxer. However, the seat comfort is a definite pro. Despite the low resale value, I decided to keep the vehicle as trading it in would have resulted in a significant loss due to being upside down. The headlights could be improved, especially in rainy conditions.

The car provides a smooth ride and is fairly quiet. Unfortunately, I found out the hard way that it is known for transmission issues, which can cost up to $8000 to fix.

Positive 2016 Nissan Murano car reviews

  1. Seth Thiel 2024-10-26

I've been driving my Nissan Murano 2016 for over 7 months now and overall, it's been great. However, I recently noticed that during heating, the AC (heat air) only diffuses on the right side of the driver. I feel cold on my left leg when I'm driving because the air only diffuses on the left side. I plan to get some plastic flex pipe and extend it towards the left leg to fix this issue. Other than this, I absolutely love this SUV!

Congratulations on your recent purchase of the Murano Hybrid! It's great to hear that you haven't had any problems with it so far. You made a smart choice by going for a brand new car with minimal miles for more than half off the MSRP. It's understandable that you haven't been able to find many reviews on the hybrid model, as it's quite rare. It sounds like the car is perfect for your family of four, especially since you needed something comfortable due to your recent back surgery. The seats, designed by NASA, are a great feature and it's good to hear that your kids find them comfortable too. While the brakes may be a little touchy, it's reassuring to know that the car is top of its class in safety. The motors sound impressive, with around 250 hpwr and the CVT tranny makes for a smooth ride. It's great that you're still discovering all the features of the car, but so far it seems to have everything you need. The styling is modern and classy, and the aerodynamics are impressive. It's no surprise that other cars have taken inspiration from the Murano body style. It's definitely a great value for the money, especially since you can fill up for only $35.00 and go around 600 miles depending on how you drive. The dash cluster is also helpful in explaining this. It's clear that you're enjoying your new car and I'm sure it will continue to serve you well. Best wishes!

I chose to go with a Nissan because I had an Infiniti for 7 years/155,000 miles which I loved and was incredibly reliable, but I needed to upgrade in size and couldn't afford the same size in an Infiniti. I ended up purchasing a 2016 Murano Platinum with 9600 miles at a great price and with the full extended warranty. I have been so pleased with the car in the month or so that I've owned it. I drive all over the state for work, so comfort, reliability, and a quiet interior were very important to me, and this car meets all of those expectations. I also needed more cargo space for work, and it fits everything I need to carry with room for even more. The Platinum version has all the bells and whistles, which I wasn't seeking out but enjoy having. The gas mileage is a little less than advertised, but it's better than my previous car, which was smaller. The controls are very easy to use, similar to my previous car, and the display is easy to read. Overall, I'm thrilled with the car and I'm glad I took the plunge to purchase it when I did.

Excellent ride! Everything still looks and performs as if you just purchased the car. I highly recommend the Murano! This SUV is holding up very well in terms of both function and style!

  5. Oda Raynor 2024-09-25

Still exceeds all our expectations! After over 3 years, I still think this has been one of the best vehicles that I have ever owned. It seems to be bulletproof!
