As Nissan's first crossover SUV for the United States and Canada, the Murano was designed at Nissan America in La Jolla, California, and was based on the Nissan FF-L platform shared with the third generation Altima. The European version of the Murano began sales in 2004.
The Murano was Nissan's only crossover SUV in the United States until September 2007, when the Rogue went on sale. In Canada, the X-Trail had been on sale as Nissan's second car based SUV since 2004 as a model for 2005; it was replaced by the 2008 Rogue at the end of 2007. The Murano is sized between the Pathfinder and the now defunct Xterra (which was replaced by the Rogue as a compact SUV). A convertible variant, the Murano CrossCabriolet, was available for the second-generation model for the model years of 2011 to 2014.
The nameplate Murano derives from the Italian islands of Murano and the namesake Murano art glass for which the islands are widely known.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2018 Nissan Murano.

- Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Nissan Murano, 2016-2018 Nissan Maxima, and 2017-2019 Nissan Pathfinder and Infiniti QX60 vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and unrepaired, or inspected and determined to not need a repair, under recall number 18V-601. In addition, this recall expands the previous population. The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) actuator pumps may allow brake fluid to leak onto an internal circuit board.
- Consequence: A brake fluid leak on the circuit board may result in an electrical short, increasing the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ABS actuator, free of charge. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available, currently expected to be during summer 2020. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Note: If the ABS warning light remains illuminated for more than 10 seconds after engine start up, owners are advised to park the vehicle outdoors away from other vehicles or structures and to not drive the vehicle.

- Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Nissan Altima, Armada, Frontier, Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, NV, NV200, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Titan Diesel, Versa Note and Versa Sedan vehicles, as well as Infiniti Q50, Q60, QX30 and QX80 vehicles. Additionally included are 2019 Nissan GT-R and Taxi and Infiniti QX50, QX60, Q70, Q70L vehicles. The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
- Consequence: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Nissan will notify owners in phases, having dealers update the back-up camera settings software, free of charge. The recall began November 11, 2019 and all affected VINs should be activated. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200.

I've owned my 2018 Murano SL for 20 months and my wife and I absolutely love it! The front seats are incredibly comfortable and easy to adjust, making long drives of 5 or 6 hours feel effortless. The interior is beautifully finished and has a luxurious feel to it. The back seat is roomy and a plus is that the back seats partially recline, providing extra comfort. Leg room both in the front and back is generous, and even our 400-pound friend finds it easy to get into the front seat and says that it's a comfortable ride. We really like the unique exterior styling, which sets the car apart from the run-of-the-mill SUVs. The cargo space is adequate for our family, and while the rear/side vision is a bit limited, the blind spot warning and the 360 camera system make up for it. The vehicle handles well with good acceleration. Overall, we really enjoy the Murano.

This SUV is an excellent value. The ride and interior quality are the best in its class. It comes with all the bells and whistles, with the only missing tech feature being lane assist. Even after a year and a half of driving the Murano, my rating still stands. The combined gas mileage to date is 25.8 mpg, with no long road trip mileage, just city and expressway driving. We also appreciate the must-have safety features. The ride and comfortable seats make it the best value!

We recently purchased a Nissan Murano SL and have been blown away by its features and value. Compared to our previous 2016 Cadillac SUV Luxury Edition, the Murano offers better gas mileage, intelligent navigation, lane departure warning, and an all-around camera for parking with forward and side view cameras. The styling is also awesome. We are thrilled with our purchase and highly recommend the Murano.

To be completely honest, I recently upgraded from a 2004 Toyota Corolla to a 2018 Nissan Murano SL, which is a significant jump in terms of size and style. Although my Corolla had fantastic quality, I'm equally impressed with the quality of my Murano so far. The ride is smooth, road noise is minimal, and the interior styling and comfort are second to none. In fact, it's one of the most comfortable cars I've ever ridden in. We opted for the cashmere leather interior, which looks phenomenal. Despite its size, the fuel economy is really not bad at all. Acceleration onto the highway is good, and it holds the road well. The steering wheel is not overly sensitive. While the car comes equipped with Bose speakers, and the overall entertainment system package is good, I wouldn't say that it's better than that found on other vehicles in the same class. All in all, we're very happy with the car and plan on driving it for many years to come.

We were disappointed to find some rust issues with our 2018 Murano S, including rust on the exhaust, lines, and frame. We purchased the vehicle with only 50 miles on it in October 2018, but after noticing the rust on the tailpipes and under the vehicle, we were concerned. Despite the vehicle being only two months old and having 3000 miles on it, we found rust on the parking brake connections, parts of the frame, and suspension. We took it back to the dealer, who had never seen anything like it, and they were able to get approval from Nissan to replace the exhaust system and parking brake cable. However, they informed us that the other rust was considered “normal”. Unfortunately, we have not had much success with Nissan Customer Care (Nissan1). While we really wanted to love our Nissan Murano, these rust issues have left us feeling disappointed.

The Bose sound system in the Murano is disappointing. Despite taking the vehicle to two different dealers and comparing it against other Muranos, the sound quality remained tinny and lacked depth. It is concerning that the front-facing radar turns off during highway travel, causing the cruise control to turn off for five minutes, which poses a safety risk when passing another vehicle. Nissan is aware of the issue but has yet to provide an engineering solution. However, it is important to note that a class action suit has been filed and complaints have been made to the NHSA.

During the first four months of ownership, my vehicle spent one month in the shop due to issues with the front radar and cruise control. Despite being told five times that there was nothing wrong, the issues persisted. However, after demonstrating the problems, the dealership kept the vehicle for an additional month to resolve the issues. While it is disappointing to experience these issues with a new car, I am confident that the dealership will resolve the problems and ensure that I am satisfied with my purchase. I trust that Nissan values their customers and will work to address any concerns I may have.

This is my 3rd Murano and 2nd lease. Despite my initial excitement, I have experienced some issues with the electronics. The Front End Obstruction warning goes out periodically without any warning, the rear intermittent windshield wiper intermittently does not work, and the electronic display for temperature controls goes out periodically. Additionally, I have had some difficulty with the Bluetooth and voice recognition features. However, I have been in contact with my local dealership's service department and they have assured me that they are working on a solution. I am confident that these issues will be resolved soon and I will be able to fully enjoy my new car.
