2015 Nissan Murano problems
The Nissan Murano (Japanese: 日産・ムラーノ, Hepburn: Nissan Murāno) is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Nissan since May 2002 for the 2003 model year, and currently in its third generation.
As Nissan's first crossover SUV for the United States and Canada, the Murano was designed at Nissan America in La Jolla, California, and was based on the Nissan FF-L platform shared with the third generation Altima. The European version of the Murano began sales in 2004.
The Murano was Nissan's only crossover SUV in the United States until September 2007, when the Rogue went on sale. In Canada, the X-Trail had been on sale as Nissan's second car based SUV since 2004 as a model for 2005; it was replaced by the 2008 Rogue at the end of 2007. The Murano is sized between the Pathfinder and the now defunct Xterra (which was replaced by the Rogue as a compact SUV). A convertible variant, the Murano CrossCabriolet, was available for the second-generation model for the model years of 2011 to 2014.
The nameplate Murano derives from the Italian islands of Murano and the namesake Murano art glass for which the islands are widely known.

Common 2015 Nissan Murano problems
The 2015 Nissan Murano has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include ABS system malfunctions, faulty airbags, powertrain issues, failing engine mounts, timing chain rattles, and liftgate rattles.
- ABS System Malfunctions: The Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) in the 2015 Nissan Murano has been reported to have issues with brake fluid leaking into the ABS unit. This can potentially affect the valves' ability to completely close and allow a build-up of hydraulic brake pressure, or fully open and allow the hydraulic brake pressure to completely drop. Under some driving conditions, when the ABS is activated, the malfunctioning ABS actuator could cause a loss of vehicle stability, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Faulty Airbags: The 2015 Nissan Murano has been reported to have issues with airbags. This can potentially lead to the airbags not deploying in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury for the passenger.
- Powertrain Issues: The powertrain of the 2015 Nissan Murano has been reported to have issues, although the specific details of these problems are not provided in the search results. Powertrain issues can affect the overall performance and reliability of the vehicle, potentially leading to costly repairs.
- Failing Engine Mounts: The 2015 Nissan Murano has been reported to have issues with failing engine mounts. This can cause a thumping noise in the floor of the vehicle, indicating that the engine is not properly secured and may be moving around while driving.
- Timing Chain Rattles: The 2015 Nissan Murano has been reported to have issues with timing chain rattles. This can potentially lead to engine performance issues and may require costly repairs to fix.
- Liftgate Rattles and Cannot Latch: The liftgate of the 2015 Nissan Murano has been reported to have issues with rattling and not being able to latch properly. This can potentially lead to issues with loading and unloading cargo from the vehicle, as well as potential safety concerns if the liftgate were to open while driving.
In summary, the 2015 Nissan Murano has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include ABS system malfunctions, faulty airbags, powertrain issues, failing engine mounts, timing chain rattles, and liftgate rattles. These problems can affect the overall performance and reliability of the vehicle, potentially leading to costly repairs.
Does the 2015 Nissan Murano have transmission problems?
The interior is the most likely to break down, but the transmission is the second most likely to fall apart. Some years of the Nissan Murano are more likely to break down than others. Avoid 2003, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2015 for the best transmission experience.
Is 2015 Nissan Murano a reliable car?
Other than that, the Murano was as reliable as a five-year-old saying “I gotta go potty” 10 minutes after getting back on the road following a fuel stop. LOWS: Uninspiring powertrain and driving dynamics, polarizing styling, can't tow much. This Nissan was also easy to live with when it came time for maintenance.
What is the weakness of the Nissan Murano?
Some common problems that the Nissan Murano suffers from include damaged seat adjuster assemblies, failing engine mounts, and brake issues.
What year was a bad Murano?
Quick Answer: The Nissan Murano years to avoid include 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2015. While that might seem like a long and daunting list, it's not as bad as it sounds. The biggest issue with Muranos is a faulty door handle. As such, it's a relatively easy and inexpensive repair.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-25
- VIN: 5N1AZ2MG8FN
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Car shut off while driving 60 miles per hour on the hwy. Battery light was on but I just had it checked and it was good. Seat belt light was also on but I had mine on and there were no other passengers. The collision light has repeatedly come on and off since I bought the vehicle new.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-22
- VIN: 5N1AZ2MG4FN
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The contact owns a 2015 Nissan Murano. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle jerked and hesitated, after which the vehicle lost motive power. The driver was able to pull over to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle was able to restart but was unable to shift into drive or reverse. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who determined that the CVT transmission fluid needed to be flushed. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 204,000.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-02
- VIN: 5N1AZ2MGXFN
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: While trying to accelerate and merge onto the highway, the transmission began to increase in RPMs but would not accelerate. There are no warning light or anythign that would inform us of a failure. This almost caused an accident because I could not get up to speed. Then the transmission began juddering at low speeds and has continued. This is a sign the transmission is failing according to Nissan. Upon research, there are many complaints out there about the transmission in the Nissans. There was a class action suit that required Nissan to extend the warranty of their drivetrain. For some reason, the Murano was excluded from this list even though it shares the same issues and the same transmission as the Pathfinder, which was recalled/warranty extended. These vehicles are a timebomb when they will fail and could cause multiple accidents. They knowly have an issue that they wont fix that could take someone life
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-17
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 5N1AZ2MH2FN
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Please note that although this system does not show that the recall repairs were complete, we have documentation from Nissan that we completed the recall work twice. On Tuesday, [XXX] at approximately [XXX]. our Nissan Murano spontaneously caught fire in our driveway. My family, including my [XXX] and a [XXX], woke up to the airbags exploding. We got our family out of the house as we spoke to the 911 dispatcher and the Murano went up in flames. Our doorbell camera caught the incident in its entirety (from the smoke under the hood to the inferno of flames) and the Montgomery County fire and explosive expert agrees that the start of the fire is likely from the ABS actuator issue stemming from Nissan’s recall in 2019. We are also hearing that it’s the worst spontaneous vehicle fire anyone has ever seen. After the incident, in good faith, we contacted Nissan North America who referred us to Nissan’s regional office for our area...they told us we have to hold the wreckage in our driveway for 8 weeks or possibly longer and that they will not help us mitigate it or provide a rental. Had our Nissan been parked in our garage, it would have been next to our mudroom which contains the gas line to our dryer. Our house would have exploded and my entire family would have died. My children cannot sleep and my pediatrician has recommended a psychologist for the entire family. My son and I have coughs from breathing in the fumes and cannot attend doctors’ appointments because we have no safe transportation. I have missed work, the burned vehicle in our driveway is melted and is a safety and health hazard for us and our neighbors. Our garage door, gutters, and soffits are melted, and there is potential damage to our roof. There is exploded glass everywhere, and my other car is un-drivable, structurally unsound, and melted on the right side, having been parked next to the Murano and torched under 1,500 degree heat for almost 40 minutes. Will provide videos. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-05
- VIN: 5N1AZ2MH0FN
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I bought a Murano on 3/31/2016 with 17,000 miles on it. I now have 58,000 miles on it & dealership says I need a new transmission.I had no idea that there was a CVT transmission when i bought it. It was never explained or disclosed about the class action lawsuit with these transmissions. I understand these defective transmissions can cause the driver to lose control of the vehicles when it stuttering & jerking at low speeds. My car has been doing this at about 20,000 miles. I have had every recommended service done on the car, including the 30,000 miles transmission maintenance. There have been 2 Disturbance Alerts with 2 issues that come up on a app on my phone stating 2 Issues Critical. 1. Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected/Code P0302 & 2.Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected/Code P0300. I told the dealership about these issues but they could never find anything wrong with the car.

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-06
- VIN: 5N1AZ2MH2FN
- Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Car began shaking on acceleration and low speeds and wouldn't stop shaking until approx 40mph or above. Upon braking to take a right hand turn car died, just stopped accelerating even though all lights on and running. No response at all when pushing pedal to the floor. Would go in reverse but only very low speed. Replaced alternator. Seemed ok but 4 months later same exact problem happened and car is not drivable again.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-09
- VIN: 5N1AZ2MG7FN
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I bought this Nissan Murano after the owner of Suncoast Quality Cars gives me the NADA - Consumers Report, which states the car was scored as an 82, in "Good Condition" with major repairs needed. After picking the Murano up 1-week after I made the purchase, when driven more than a couple of miles, you could feel the transmission slipping. While the owner of Suncoast said that his mechanic had done a full diagnostic test and had confirmed NADA's scoring, just to make sure I took it to Courtesy Nissan of Tampa and paid for their Certified Nissan Mechanics to do a full diagnostic test. Courtesy Nissan's Diagnostic test revealed that the transmission would need to be replaced, which while I did purchase a used car warranty from Suncoast, the car has been out of commission since roughly a week after receiving delivery from Suncoast. When I contacted [XXX] (Owner) by email on 4-separate occasions, from 2-separate email addresses, and text, he states he never received them. Given the owner's approach, and refusing to own up to his lies, or take any kind of responsibility here, I would like a full refund, as I would have never purchased the car, if I knew it had a major safety issue and would have to have the transmission replaced immediately after delivery, and I most certainly wouldn't have paid the price of a car that NADA stated was in "Good Condition", as the cost of the transmission is actually 65% of the price I paid for the car. With the transmission needing to be replaced, the same measuring tool (NADA) that Suncoast used to sell me the car, actually states the car is worth thousands-less. Attached, you will also find a copy of the results from the Certified Nissan Mechanic at Courtesy Nissan of Tampa. VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-06-01
- VIN: 5N1AZ2MH0FN
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: I wrote this to Nissan. They called me and said there is no recall for this and not under warranty so nothing they can do. They mentioned submitting issue to this site: "2015 Murano, water leak that collects on the floor of the driver's side front and back and trunk in the area of the spare tire. Couldn't figure out why for 2 years. Finally took to auto body place tried flushing out moon roof drain. Okay for a month then 2 days of downpours & all 3 areas had lakes in them. Musty/moldy smell was so bad I had to rip out all of the carpeting of the car in those areas & had a pro car detailer do an ozone treatment & detailing. Hopefully the mold issue is a little better after this & scrubbing everywhere in the car w/ Clorox/water mix. The smell seems better and we are able to garage it now, but still can’t drive the car in heavy rains, WHICH IS RIDICULOUS. Since this is an obvious manufacturer defect, and not from normal wear & tear of driving a car, in this happening and causing all of this damage to my car, even though I am not under warranty as I have 109,000 miles on the car, Nissan needs to fully take care of this issue for me for free and repay me the $150 for what the autobody place did and $150 for the detailing and then a guarantee that I will not have water issues from there. Replacing the carpeting and making sure I have no mold issues in the car moving forward needs to be part of this as well, as my wife has asthma and this is beyond ridiculous with the health issue concerns caused by this manufacturer defect. This is also ridiculous that I have to cut and rip the carpets out of my car and have mold issues with such a large company that should have put a recall out on this defect years ago. I now see complaints all over the internet about this same issue for this same model and year car, with no resolution from Nissan from any that I saw of other people having the same issue and trying to fix the issue themselves. How can there not be a recall to fix this?"
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-06
- VIN: 5N1AZ2MG2FN
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Nissan's CVT transmission dies on highway at ODO=72K miles, a well known issue similar to other Nissan's models. I had to replaced the CVT transmission at $6K. Nissan should at least gives clear instruction that CVT transmission oil to be replaced at 30K mile in the owner manual. At least two Nissan's models had recalls due to the same CVT transmission failure. Why not include other models with the same issues to protect the consumers?
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-26
- VIN: 5N1AZ2MG5FN
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I took my vehicle to jack Ingram nissan on 1/26/2023 because the car started, jerking, stalling, shuddering, hesitating, and premature transmission failure. They told me at Jack Ingram nissan that my CVT transmission was bad. I just had the CVT transmission flushed in May 2022 and nothing was wrong wit my transmission then. My vehicle only has 90,200 miles on it so nothing should be wrong with the transmission. It has been reported that several complaints about the CVT Transmission in Nissan Muranos and several other nissan models go bad when the car does not have 100,000+ miles on them. Nissan dealers ships refuses to take the necessary steps and make the necessary repairs for this ongoing problem with there CVT Transmissions.
SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-16
- VIN: 5N1AZ2MH5FN
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: Seat belt may be defective as it is very difficult to fasten. I think if I were to get into an accident it would fail. I bought the car in 2016 and it seems Nissan may have used a poor design.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-16
- VIN: 5N1AZ2MH1FN
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The transfer case need to be replaced. I took my vehicle to the dealer a few months ago and they told me I had a leak but didn't know where it was coming from. I took it back to the dealer yesterday 12/16/22 and they told me where the leak is coming from. The cvt fluid is leaking from the lh axle seal. Murano owners have been complaining about this same issue. The dealership is charging me $712.59 for an issue that I didn't cause. The dealership need to fix this for free because this issued happened during the making of the vehicle and shouldn't fall on the buyer.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-05-11
- VIN: 5N1AZ2MH5FN
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The door locks for this vehicle are unreliable. I have had to replace all 4 on this vehicle and many other locks on my previous 2 Murano vehicles. They will not lock/unlock reliably. Sometimes they will not unlock when exiting the vehicle. They cannot be counted on in an emergency to unlock.
POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-16
- VIN: 5N1AZ2MG5FN
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The front radar obstruction light on my 1025 Nissan Murano has occasionally come off and on in bad weather (to be expected) and under normal driving conditions. I have had to have it are-aligned previously. Recently however, the light started coming on and off when I was stopped or in park. It would clear when I started driving. Eventually it would start coming on and stay on for very long stretches of time. I brought the car in to be looked at and was told I needed a new sensor for approximately $1500. I got no other explanation. I have seen hundreds, if not thousands of complaints about these sensors going bad. I even found a recall campaign (NTB19-033/A) for the exact problem. I was told this is a service campaign and it seemed as if it was at the dealerships discretion to follow the campaign. I am not sure if the manufactured date was even looked at as stated in the campaign. I have had numerous occasions where I have been using cruise control on the highway and all of a sudden the car starts slowing down without my immediate knowledge. There is no way to bypass this sensor in order to use cruise control either. I feel that this issue is a safety concern and the part should be recalled.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-23
- VIN: 5n1az2mh0fn
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Light smoke coming from the exhaust became more over a couple days. Had to replace head gaskets.!!!$$$$ and sensors. Its a 2015 with 65k miles. I've noticed this is a problem with nissan Suv's lately which is sad. A friend of mine has a 2019 pathfinder and the same thing is happening to hers! I know things happen but this was a huge repair! And who has money for that.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-29
- VIN: 5n1az2mh8fn
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: A seal around the taillight was not properly sealed which caused rainwater to leak in the car's side body corroding the body harness and control module. Nissan Consumer Affairs is refusing to address the issue. The trunk hatch now pops open on its own and the car alarm goes off randomly making it extremely unsafe and undrivable.

- Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2015 Murano vehicles manufactured December 4, 2014, to March 17, 2015. These vehicles are equipped with Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) actuators which may have contamination in the solenoid valves, potentially affecting the valves' ability to completely close and allow a build up of hydraulic brake pressure, or fully open and allow the hydraulic brake pressure to completely drop.
- Consequence: Under some driving conditions, when the ABS is activated, the malfunctioning ABS actuator could cause a loss of vehicle stability, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the ABS actuator, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on August 13, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Murano that I bought back in March 2015. I was in the market for an SUV and after researching several options, I ended up choosing the Murano. So far, I haven't had any issues with it. The only thing I'm not too fond of is the acceleration and stability in cornering, but the braking is optimal. On the plus side, the interior is great! The only drawback is the city mileage, which tends to be around 14-16 mpg, but the highway mileage is satisfactory. This is actually my first time owning a CVT, so I'm not sure how reliable it is. What has been your experience with it?

I really enjoyed driving this car! As someone who fell in love with mid-size SUVs after driving a Chrysler Pacifica, I have to say that the Nissan Murano is a huge improvement. The body style is futuristic yet classy, and the interior makes you feel like you're in a luxury car. The only issue I've had is that the hood tends to glare on extremely sunny days. Additionally, I chose the Cashmere (Bleach Color) interior, which can be a bit challenging to keep clean, but the color is absolutely stunning, especially with the illuminating interior lights. Overall, Nissan really hit it out of the park with this one!

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your Murano so far! It sounds like you're really impressed with the comfort of the seats, the high-class interior design, and the smoothness of the CVT transmission. It's also great to hear that the handling has been impressive and that you're excited about the excellent reliability of these SAV's. I appreciate your honest feedback about the engine noise during hard acceleration and the cheaper feeling door handles. It's also good to know that the passenger seat doesn't have as many adjustments as the driver's seat. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us!

The back rear window of my 2015 Nissan Murano imploded on both sides. Despite the alarming incident, I am grateful that no one was hurt. Upon researching, I discovered that this is a common issue with Rogues and Muranos, sometimes occurring on the passenger side. Despite my disappointment with Nissan's response, I took the initiative to have it fixed. Moving forward, I will be considering other options for my next vehicle purchase. Safety is a top priority for me and I cannot compromise on it.

I've been driving the 2015 Murano for six months now and it's a beautiful and comfortable car. However, I have experienced some issues with the quality of the vehicle, which I did not encounter with my previous cars. I have noticed some constant little things that need fixing and I am concerned about possible transmission problems. Although I have 2000 miles left on my warranty, I feel the need to address these issues urgently. Despite these problems, I still enjoy driving the car. I have read about some transmission issues with this model, but I hope that it won't be the case for me. This is the most expensive vehicle I have ever owned, but I am hopeful that the issues will be resolved. I would like to caution potential buyers to be aware of these issues, but I still believe that the Murano is a great car overall.

I have had a negative experience with Nissan's Murano. The 2009 model was great, but the 2015 model lacked many standard features and had quality control issues. The new factory's production quality was poor, and I had to replace the transmission due to slippage and shuddering. The car was also totaled in an accident, and my seat back broke. The 2015 Murano had a grinding or high-frequency vibration in the steering wheel that the dealer could not or would not address. It also did not ride as well as my previous Muranos, with lots of vibrations, rough idle, and untraceable noises. Despite my attempts to have the issues resolved, Nissan refused to admit the transmission slipped and played the lemon law avoidance game. I eventually sold the car and purchased a Kia Sorento, which has proven to be a much better car with higher quality and many standard features that Nissan would have charged a fortune for. I have been disappointed with Nissan's lack of customer value and short-sightedness. I have dissuaded 20 people from buying a Murano or other Nissan and will continue to do so. I have also met someone who bought a 2016 Murano and is experiencing the same problems with the transmission and vibrations. Despite buying an extended warranty, Nissan is not honoring it, and he is taking them to court.I am confident in my Kia Sorento. With 11,500 miles on it, I have not experienced any issues. It averages 30 MPG on the highway and 26-28 in rural driving. The more I drive it, the more I appreciate it. The heated seats, self-dimming mirror, outside mirror defrosters, auto-dimming headlights, and other features came as standard equipment, which is a great value compared to Nissan's extra charges.

I recently purchased a new Murano AWD Platinum and unfortunately, I have been experiencing some issues. Despite not having scheduled my first oil change yet, I have been getting very low MPG in the city, ranging from 7 to 13. I reached out to Nissan and they advised me to take it back to the dealer to have it checked out. Although the dealer did not find any issues, I am still concerned. Nissan mentioned that in order to be covered under the lemon law, the dealer would have to find something wrong with the vehicle. I believe that there is something wrong with the vehicle, as Nissan claims to have obtained 21 MPG in the city. I would advise anyone considering purchasing this vehicle to test drive it thoroughly before making a decision, as looks can be deceiving.

I own a 2015 Murano Platinum and unfortunately, it has been in and out of the shop for various issues. Currently, it's back in the shop because the transmission has been replaced twice, the fuel pump once, and now it's in for the fourth time because I'm only getting 11 miles per gallon. I had a case with the Consumer Affairs Department at Nissan, but unfortunately, they denied my case. I'm feeling quite disappointed with both Nissan and my car, especially considering the high cost of over $43,000. With my warranty almost over, any future repairs will come out of my pocket. I hope Nissan can improve their quality and service. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
