2012 Mitsubishi Outlander sport problems
The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.
The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."
The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.
As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.
The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-05-30
- Crash: 1
- VIN: JA4AR4AU4CZ
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: MY MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER SPORT HAS A KEYLESS START. THERE IS NO MECHANISM THAT PREVENTS THE VEHICLE ACCIDENTALLY BEING TURNED OFF WHILE STILL IN DRIVE OR REVERSE. ON 5/30/19 AT APPROXIMATELY 9:20 PM, I MADE A RUN TO MY LOCAL RITE-AID. I TURNED OF THE IGNITION, BUT FORGOT TO PUT IT IN PARK. I EXITED THE STORE AFTER APPROXIMATELY 5 MINUTES TO FIND MY CAR MISSING FROM THE PARKING LOT. I INITIALLY THOUGHT IT HAD BEEN STOLEN. THE POLICE FOUND MY VEHICLE AFTER IT HAD ROLLED OUT OF THE PARKING LOT, INTO TRAFFIC AND ENDED UP CRASHING IN A DITCH. IT HAD TO BE HAULED OUT AND SUSTAINED SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE AND MAY BE A TOTAL LOSS. I CAN ONLY BE GRATEFUL THAT IT DID NOT COLLIDE INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE,L OR HIT A PEDESTRIAN. THIS ACCIDENT COULD HAVE EASILY KILLED SOMEONE. THERE IS NO LOGICAL REASON THAT A SAFETY MECHANISM SHOULD NOT BE A STANDARD REQUIREMENT IN ALL PUSH BUTTON START VEHICLES TO PREVENT SUCH A TRAGEDY. THE CAR RENTAL I AM CURRENTLY USING IS A 2019 ESCALADE. I TESTED THE REMOTE START IN THE ESCALADE AND NO MATTER WHAT GEAR I AM IN WHEN I SHUT OFF THE ENGINE, IT AUTOMATICALLY DEFAULTS TO PARK. IT CAN BE DONE AND SHOULD BE REQUIRED!

POWER TRAIN,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-09-01
- VIN: JA4JT3AW6CU
- Components: POWER TRAIN,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: FOLLOWING I JUST SENT TO MITSUBISHI HEADQUARTERS I SEE RECALLS FOR TRANSMISSIONS FOR MY MAKE AND MODEL AND YEAR THAT STATES TRANSMISSION FAIL PREMATURELY BETWEEN THE MILES OF 114,000! AND 179,000 AND MINE DID AT 137,000 IT IS NOW STATING FOR 4 MODEL YEARS 2 OF WHICH ARE 2011&2013. WHAT WAS THE DIFFERENCE FOR 2012 TRANSMISSION WHEN YES INDEED MY YEAR OF 2012 TRANSMISSION FAILED PREMATURELY? IT DID JUST AS YOUR RECALL STATES AND THEN WHEN I PUT IN MY VIN# I AM TOLD IT WASN'T MY SKIPPED YEAR THAT WAS PART OF THE RECALL. LATER DOWN THE ROAD MONTHS LATER I RECHECK AND MY YEAR NEWLY BECAME SKIPPED FOR THIS TRANSMISSION RECALLS. I BELIEVE THERE WAS MORE THAN ONE REASON FOR YOUR RECALL. CAN YOU DO THE RIGHT BY THE CAR I BOUGHT FROM YOU FOLKS AND REPLACE THE FAULTY TRANSMISSION THAT WAS PUT IN MY CAR? YOU: I HAVE A 2012 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER. I BROKE DOWN ON THE INTERSTATE AND HAD MY CAR TOWED TO THE MITSUBISHI DEALER AND THEIR SERVICE DEPT SAID MY TRANSMISSION IS SHOT DUE TO A SECONDARY CODE THAT THE CVT HAS NON OPERATIONAL PRESSURE WITH AN INTERNAL WEAK OIL PUMP WHICH CAUSED THE FAILURE. AND IT WOULD BE 7,500$ JUST FOR A NEW TRANSMISSION AND AN ADDITIONAL 800$ TO PUT IT IN. I BELIEVE THERE WAS A RECALL SKIPPING MY YEAR CAR BEING A 2012 OUTLANDER. I BOUGHT IT NEW AND HAVE ALWAYS HAD DIFFERENT PROBLEMS WITH IT. ONE OF WHICH BACK IN 2016 THE PINION SEAL FOR THE TRANSFER CASE WAS FAULTY AND IT TOOK ME TO DEMAND CHECKING WHY I WAS GETTING A LEAK OF OIL LEFT ON MY CLEAN GARAGE FLOOR. I BRING THAT UP AS TO COULD THIS BE ONE OF THE CAUSES OF TRANSMISSION FAILURE? I DID HAVE IT REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY WHICH NEVER WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I DIDN'T NOTICE THE LEAK MYSELF. WHILE I AM AT IT MY HEAT AND AC HAVE BEEN BARELY BEEN ACCEPTABLE FOR KEEPING US WARM IN THE COLD WINTERS HERE AND AC NOT PERFORMING VERY WELL EITHER. MY CAR IS NOW STRANDED AT THE BURLINGTON MITSUBISHI DEALER

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DAYTONA MITSUBISHI (LOCATED AT 510 N NOVA RD, DAYTONA BEACH, FL 32114), BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE SAME DEALER A FEW YEARS AGO FOR THE SAME FAILURE. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT A FLAT SPOT FROM THE TIRE CAUSED THE FAILURE. THE DEALER PERFORMED AN ALIGNMENT, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND DID NOT ASSIST. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 86,000.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-10-01
- VIN: JA4JT3AW6CU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: THE REAR BRAKES GET SO HOT THAT WHEN THEY GET SNOW OR RAIN THEY SMOKE AND SMELL REAL BAD THAT I HAVE TO BE CAREFUL NOT TO OPEN DOORS. IT IS REAL BAD ONCE YOU STOP. I CANT DO MY TRANSPORTATION JOB BECAUSE OF IT. THE DEALER TELLS IT IS NORMAL.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-10-26

THE DEALER (LARRY JAY MITSUBISHI, 8415 SOUTH BLVD, CHARLOTTE, NC 28273, (866) 237-9670) DID NOT GIVE A SPECIFIC DATE FOR WHEN THE PART WOULD BECOME AVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER COULD NOT PROVIDE AN ESTIMATED DATE FOR WHEN THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE WOULD RECEIVE THE RECALL REPAIR. THE CONTACT WAS NOT EXPERIENCING A FAILURE. VIN TOOL CONFIRMS PARTS NOT AVAILABLE.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-06-17
- VIN: JA4AR4AU8CZ
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: TRANSMISSION/ENGINE MAKES A HIGH PITCHED WHINING NOISE WHEN ACCELERATING ABOVE 2000 RPMS CURRENTLY. IT STARTED OUT ONLY DOING IT WHEN GOING UP HILL AT HIGHER RPMS BUT HAS GOTTEN WORSE. IT HAS ALSO AFFECTED THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM AND HAD THE LOCKS, BACKUP CAMERA, REVERSE LIGHTS ALL GOING HAYWIRE. THIS WAS WITNESSED BY MY OIL SHOP WHILE GETTING AN OIL CHANGE ON IT THE MECHANIC COULDNT GET THE VEHICLE FROM DRIVE TO PARK AMD ONCE IT DID GO IT WOULD UNLOCK FROM PARK. I WAS TOLD IT WAS SENSORS BY A MITSUBISHI DEALERSHIP BUT THAT DIDNT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. IT REVS THE ENGINE IT HIGH TPMS WHILE DRIVING NOT LETTINGNIT SHIFT FROM 1ST TO 2ND AND MAKES IT SO YOU CANT GET THE VEHICLE OFF THE ROAD BECAUSE THE TRANSMISSION SHUTS DOWN. EVEN IN NEUTRAL THE RPMSWILL INCREASE WHEN IT DOES THIS. THIS IS A SAFTEY ISSUE WITH THIS ENGINE/TRANSMISSION IF YOU GET STUCK IN A HIGH TRAFFIC AREA AND CAN NOT GET TO A SAFE PULLOFF. IVE HAD MY KIDS IN THE CAR WHEN THIS HAS HAPPENED AND THE DEALERSHIPS (ALL 3 OF THEM) CA NOT FIND THE PROBLEM. I HAVE HAD TO MISS WORK FOR THESE APPOINTMENTS AND NOW THE WARRANTY IS EXPIRED AS I BOUGHT IT USED AND CAN NOT AFFORD TO REPLACE A TRANSMISSION OR ENGINE AND BEING THIS IS MY ONLY VEHICLE AND NOTHING COULD BE DONE WHILE IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY AND SEEING OTHERS COMPLAINING OF THE SAME THINGS WITH THERE VEHICLES IT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AND CORRECTED. IT ALSO SMELLS LIKE RUBBER OR ELECTRICAL BURNING WHEN THIS HAPPENS.

2012 Mitsubishi Outlander sport recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander sport.
- Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
- Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
- Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2008-2010 Lancer, 2009-2010 Lancer Sportback, 2008-2013 Outlander, and 2011-2016 Outlander Sport vehicles originally sold in, or ever registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The front lower control arms may detach due to the front cross member corroding from salt water exposure such as from road salt use.
- Consequence: A detached front control arm can result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front cross members. Depending on the level of existing corrosion, either a sealing/anti-corrosion agent will be applied or the front cross member will be replaced with a new one. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began August 7, 2020. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-20-003.
- Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
- Components: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER:LINKAGES
- Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2011-2016 Outlander Sport vehicles. Water may enter between the hood and windshield and cause the front wiper link ball joint to corrode, possibly resulting in the wiper link separating and the wipers becoming inoperative.
- Consequence: Loss of wiper function can reduce visibility and increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rod of the wiper link and the wiper motor crank arm, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin April 10, 2018. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-18-004.
- Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE:GASOLINE:BELTS AND ASSOCIATED PULLEYS
- Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. The drive belt automatic tensioner flange may crack, allowing the accessory drive belt to detach.
- Consequence: If the drive belt detaches, the battery will discharge and the engine will stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the belt tensioner with one that has an improved shape, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin March 27, 2018. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-18-001.
- Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
- Components: STRUCTURE:BODY:HATCHBACK/LIFTGATE:HINGE AND ATTACHMENTS
- Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Outlander Sport vehicles manufactured August 26, 2010, to June 1, 2012, and 2016 Outlander Sport vehicles manufactured January 11, 2016, to July 8, 2016. The lift gate support outer tube on the affected vehicles may have insufficient anti-corrosion treatment that can allow the outer tube to corrode due to salt and water penetration.
- Consequence: If the outer tube corrodes, there may be a rapid loss of the gas used to provide lift assistance, causing the lift gate to fall suddenly, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the lift gate supports, free of charge. The recall began on January 20, 2017. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-16-011.

In the affected vehicles, water may drop between the hood and the windshield and leak into the wiper motor breathing hole. The water may cause internal corrosion of the windshield wiper motor and the possible failure of the motor.
- Consequence: Failure of the wiper motor can cause a loss of visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the wiper motor, free of charge. The manufacturer has begun the recall, but parts are not yet available; a second notice will be sent when parts are available. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 108, "LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES, AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT." THE TURN SIGNAL LEVERS IN THE VEHICLE WERE NOT MANUFACTURED CORRECTLY, WHICH COULD RESULT IN THE AUTO-CANCEL FUNCTION OF THE TURN SIGNAL BECOMING INOPERATIVE.
- Consequence: THE TURN SIGNAL MAY CONTINUE TO SIGNAL AN INTENDED DIRECTIONAL CHANGE AFTER A POINT WHEN THE AUTO-CANCEL FUNCTION, IF OPERATING PROPERLY, WOULD HAVE TERMINATED THE SIGNAL. A FOLLOWING OR ONCOMING DRIVER MAY RECEIVE INACCURATE INDICATIONS OF THE VEHICLE OPERATOR'S INTENDED MANEUVERS, THEREBY INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH BETWEEN VEHICLES DUE TO IMPROPER VEHICLE SIGNALING.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE TURN SIGNAL LEVER AND REPLACE IT WITH A NEW ONE FREE OF CHARGE. NO VEHICLES HAVE BEEN RETAILED TO CUSTOMERS WITH THIS POTENTIAL CONDITION, NO RECALL BULLETIN OR OWNER LETTERS WILL BE PREPARED. YOU MAY CONTACT MITSUBISHI AT 1-800-222-0037.

I really love this car! I've had two Hondas and a Jeep, but this one is my favorite. It comes with all the little extras like heated seats, Bluetooth, and keyless entry and start, all for a much lower price than Honda. It looks great and is a joy to drive. I highly recommend getting the larger wheels and 4WD, as it makes all the difference in the world. During a recent snowstorm, this CUV handled better than any SUV I've ever driven, including my previous Jeep. Thanks to Mitsb for creating an affordable and awesome CUV. I'm having a blast driving it and I'm sure you will too!
-
My CUV has a noisy CVT transmission and a low-powered 145 hp engine, but it also has a convenient USB music port and an efficient MPG monitoring system. In fact, my CUV can get up to 36 MPG and can go up to 2 or 3 weeks without refueling! Despite costing less than most CUVs, it has more standard features than most in its class. My CUV has taught me how to drive during these high gas prices and it looks great too! I have never had a repair issue with my 2012 Outlander Sport, and it can even go beyond the posted speed limit. I am a loyal Mitsubishi customer and have bought 6 cars from them, including this CUV. I plan to keep this Outlander Sport forever!
-
I've been driving my Outlander Sport ES with CVT for just over 2 months now, and I must say, it's a pretty nice little car/SUV/wagon - whatever you want to call it! I really like the way it looks, and the power seems more than adequate. It rides smooth and quiet, with hardly any tire or wind noise. The handling is great, and it gets good mileage too. At 1400 plus miles, my MPG has ranged from 24.3 right after I took delivery to 27.4 on my last fill up in mixed driving, probably 35/65 City/Hwy. I've taken my car up to the mountains twice since I got it, and the ability to shift it manually in the 6 power ranges of the CVT transmission made going up the hills and back down a lot of fun! There are a lot of other nice features too, like the electronics, storage space, dash display, great warranty, etc. Overall, I'm very happy with the deal I got and the car.

My wife and I are really enjoying this car! She thinks it's awesome, and I have to agree that the features are above our expectations. While I personally feel that the engine could use a bit more power given the weight of the vehicle, I've found that using the paddle shifters compensates for this. Ultimately, the driving style plays a big role in how the car performs. Additionally, the Bluetooth connectivity is a great feature, and the car is spacious and priced just right. Overall, we think this car was designed with a female target audience in mind, and they definitely got it right!

I got a loaded SE AWD. The car is great! It may take a little while to get used to the way the CVT behaves, but once I got over that, I really liked the car. It's comfortable, quiet, and the interior is very elegant in a minimalistic way. The sound system (Rockford Fosgate) is the best I've seen, and the Bluetooth integration with my phone is fantastic! Not only does it handle phone calls, but it also plays the music from my smartphone automatically. I just get in the car and it remembers all of the settings. I am very happy with the car.

Over the past few years, I have experienced a whining sound from the transmission after driving for long periods of time on the freeway. The issue gradually worsened and started happening after driving for shorter periods of time on the freeway, then after driving up any hill, and eventually after just driving a few miles in the city. I received a warning that said 'Transmission Overheating, Slow Down.' Despite taking the car to the dealership, they assured me that this was a normal complaint with this year and model and would go away after changing the CVT fluid at the 60,000 mile service. I had the 60k service done at 57,000 miles because I couldn't stand the transmission noise anymore, but the issue continued to persist. After taking the car back to the dealership, they still insisted that it was normal. However, I knew that this was not the case. The next time I took it in, they said it was because I was driving in 4wd mode. When the problem happened in 2wd mode, I took it back and they said they couldn't reproduce the issue and decided that it must not be a problem. Unfortunately, the final straw was when I experienced the issue after an easy 30-minute trip on the freeway. I received the warning and couldn't pull off to let the transmission cool down, and the car completely lost power, leaving me stranded. Although the transmission eventually cooled down and I was able to drive it again, the dealership still insisted that it was either a normal issue or that the problem didn't exist. As a result, I decided to sell the car and will be purchasing a more reliable SUV from a brand with better dealer service.

In the summer of 2012, my wife and I purchased a fully loaded RVR (as they call it here in Canada). While I was mostly sold on this car's styling, we soon realized that it wasn't the right fit for us. In less than a year, we decided to trade it in for a European station wagon, which turned out to be our best car purchasing decision. Although we had some complaints about the ride height, we found that the Mitsubishi was a well put together package at a bargain price. Prior to the Mitsubishi, we had test driven the new Escape, MX-5, and Forester, but we didn't like any of them, even though they were more expensive. We didn't necessarily pick the wrong crossover, we simply realized that it wasn't the right car segment for us.

After my first long road trip in this car, I was disappointed with the comfort of the seats. They were extremely hard. Additionally, the black interior seems to get dusty quickly. Unfortunately, the fuel economy was not at all what was promised, even though I drove it so that the eco light was on as much as possible, and I only got about 20/25 on the highway. Lastly, my dealership experience was also very poor.

Overall, the car is pretty decent. It's comfortable and stylish, and the road noise is well dampened. It's suitable for a single person or small family. However, I was somewhat disappointed with the performance and fuel economy. On average, fuel consumption is 18-19mpg in the city and 20-22mpg on the highway. Unfortunately, my experience with the Mitsubishi dealership was quite dismal.

I'm starting to understand why the Mitsubishi dealer had so many Outlander Sports and why I got a price under $16k. While this car looks amazing and offers a lot for the price, there are a couple of issues that I've noticed. Firstly, the suspension can be a bit soft, which can make the car feel a bit bumpy on the freeway at 65 MPH. Secondly, I've had a few check engine lights come on due to an issue with the MIVEC valve timing, but the dealer has been helpful in resolving this. Overall, I still think this is a great car for the price!
