The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.

The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."

The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.

As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.

The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

So I filed a complaint against the manufacturer who is the cause for this model for the same year to have the same problem for having any leaks too early. So I need your help that the manufacturer should recall the same model from this year based on the mileage of the vehicle.

  • Summary: Failure of driver side exterior mirror. 3 years after purchase of vehicle the mirror would no longer move in and out. Dealer replaced with OEM quality mirror July 2021. 2 years later (August 2023)mirror now has the exact same malfunction/defect. Mitsubishi is unable to tell me why the failure happened in the first place or why it has again happened. Mitsubishi refuses to take any action to fully rectify this issue. They only suggest again replacing the mirror. As the mirror is part of a side vehicle warning system the malfunction creates the possibility of a side collision with another vehicle. • VIN: JA4AR3AU3HZ
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,WHEELS,ENGINE
  • Summary: This 2017 outlander has had issues with the tire rod multiple times. It needed to be fixed approx every three months and the tires needed constant changing as well. This vehicle had a timing chain issue which left me stranded in the middle of the high way. the power stopped, the car started to jerk back and forth and it would power off. We had to get this car towed to three seperate mechanics as no one would work on a mitsubishi and I was told it was the timing chain with possible engine damage. Prio to all of this happening the radio and electrical system would freeze or automatically turn off and on, it never resolved and blue tooth was rarely able to be used.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-08
  • VIN: JA4AZ3A39HZ
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: I’ve changed the battery at least once or twice within the first 2 years of purchasing the vehicle from the dealer with zero miles on it. Lately (in the past 2 months) I’ve changed the battery at least four times or more. Some expensive batteries as well. In the past 2 months, it’s been giving me problems including stalling on me, slowing down on the highway, sometimes won’t start at all, sometimes it’ll say electrical system service required. Once it said four-wheel drive system service required on the highway as it slew down and I had to pull aside. I’ve noticed some recalls on the vehicle via internet research. It may not be specific to my vehicle, but it does seem very familiar problems with my vehicle. Such as Electrical system: Starter assembly: Relay, Electronic stability control, Electrical system: Software and even with the transmission. I’ve towed the vehicle to the Mitsubishi dealer in Totowa, NJ today. I was informed that my specific vehicle doesn’t any recalls. Service advisor did say there are other similar vehicles did have those recalls but mine didn’t come up on the recall.

STEERING,AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-14
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JA4AR3AU8HZ
  • Components: STEERING,AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: My 17-year old son was stopped at a stop sign. He waited until any oncoming cars had passed before he started to move out of the stop. He turned right out of the stop and onto the cross street. After only a few feet, my son notice the front of the vehicle was angled toward the curb & he tried to pull the wheel out of the angle and stepped on the brakes. The steering wheel would not turn AT ALL & the brakes didn't do anything. My son stepped on the brake pedal two more times and the vehicle DID NOT slow down or respond to this. The car went into the front steps of our local Police Station. Because he had about 40 feet from stop sign to impact, we estimate he had about 2 seconds to respond to this situation & could not have exceeded 10-15mph in that time. Upon impact, the air bag did not deploy. There was minimal property damage to the building, but the car was totaled. The entire front end was pushed in. My son was able to exit the vehicle and luckily did not have any sever injuries. We are writing this complaint because of existing safety recalls to the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport for all the years surrounding our 2017 model. These complaints all note engine stalling after complete stops. The engine stalls lead to unresponsive steering wheels, brakes that don't work, and airbags that don't deploy. We want this situation investigated as well.

SUSPENSION,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-09-21
  • VIN: JA4AZ3A37HZ
  • Components: SUSPENSION,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: 1. Speed control: Our family outlander has had some issues following our purchase, and I was assured that the hesitation when depressing the accelerator was just a product of the CVT transmission. It’s something we have just learned to deal with given the information we were provided with. It has put us in a bad position with countless near misses over the years when needing to merge, and the annoying stall that happens when accelerating after a stop sign or red light. We have just moved from the Midwest to Phoenix(car only has 30k miles), and the hesitation and stalling is worse than ever. Even with a 3/4 depress on the accelerator, the notion of movement correlating with the amount of gas given is an eon apart. I must also mention that there are times that the car releases like a race car as well, but with minimal pressure on the accelerator. It seems like it’s an obvious programming issue or maybe just a few bad relays. I’m hoping there is a light at the end of the tunnel for this one. 2. Suspension: Our vehicle has sounded like it has had major issues since the beginning, but was told it was normal. The car has always made a loud clunk when reversing after a first of the day start. It is then followed up after warming up with a clunk in the front seats center below us, and while turning in either direction. Hitting any minor bump on a highway while on any mild curve also causes the vehicle to jump a few feet over by itself. It’s frightening judging just how the car will grip after it’s roll. The only remedy is to decelerate under the speed limit during any curve to avoid the situation all together. I’m not sure I’d ever purchase a Mitsubishi again, as I’m only scratching the surface with mechanical defects. I would be happy to finally get some answers on how this was left in the dark so long. It’s comforting knowing friends and family dealing with the same problems. Thanks you, and warm regards! VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-02-14
  • VIN: JA4AD3A36HZ
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: I am the owner of a 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander. On February 14, 2022 at 1:00 PM, my wife and I were driving home along the 405 freeway northbound from our son’s house. All of a sudden, we heard a loud bang and shattered glass entered the vehicle from overhead. The majority of the sunroof glass spontaneously flew off with only remnants of shattered glass entering the vehicle. Upon later inspection, I noticed that the glass was very fragile (easily breaks). There were no warning messages and no prior indication of problems with the glass sunroof. The glass sunroof randomly broke without incident (i.e., no contact with any other vehicles). The experience was tremendously jarring and unsettling because it was completely unexpected and could have caused me to lose control of the vehicle. Fortunately, I was able to maintain control of the vehicle and avoided any accident. We were a few car lengths away from any vehicles, both to the front of us and from behind and there were no foreign objects inside the vehicle that would indicate foul play. Since we are both retired, the SUV is kept in the garage most of the time. It only has 31,500 miles on it. We are reporting this incident to let you know that it could happen again to other vehicles of the same model or manufacturer that could result in serious injuries. I hope you’ll look into this incident as soon as possible. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Please look at the quality of the glass and its proper installation. I went to the Cerritos Mitsubishi dealership on the day of the incident (February 14, 2022) to show them the damage.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-10-13
  • VIN: JA4AP3AU6HZ
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Each door latch on our car has had to be replaced, all at separate times since we bought the car in 2017. The door latches will not lock/unlock with the fob or driver panel. It causes a safety issue with the door. It could come open (from failure to latch) while driving and people can fall out. It does not lock/unlock when you lock the car from the driver panel or fob and people can just open your door and enter it. Which has happened to us. The only way to lock/unlock it is from the inside from that door, since the fob, driver panel do not work, but then you have to scoot across the seat and come out the other side of the car to get out of the car, and then you still can’t unlock it unless you scoot back over and unlock that door since there is only 1 door with a key entrance, the driver door. It’s not been a recall on this specific year (2017) but it has been for 2016. We are now replacing our 4th latch because of this issue, hopefully the hatch does not do this as well. Many others with the same year car have had the same problem, I’ve seen many complaints online, and still no recall has been made about the door latches for 2017. It’s a HUGE safety issue not being able to lock and unlock your car door, or the door possibly failing to latch and someone falling out of the car door.

POWER TRAIN,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Summary: I'VE HAD MY ROUTINE MAINTENANCE DONE ON THIS VEHICLE SINCE I FINANCED IT BACK IN JUNE OF 2019 WHICH WAS AT 47K MILES. THERE WAS NO ISSUES, I HAD MY LAST MAINTENANCE DONE IN OCTOBER AT 70K MILES. MY TRANSMISSION SHOWED NO SIGNS OF GOING OUT , THERE'S NO LEAKAGE OF ANY SORT. IT JUST DECIDED SATURDAY, JANUARY 2 OF 2021 THAT IT WAS JUST GOING TO GO OUT. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP JANUARY 5TH, AND HE TOLD ME IT'LL BE $7035.09 TO REPLACE. I FEEL AS THOUGH THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS TRANSMISSION JUST LIKE THE RECALLS FOR THE 2016 MODELS. THE DASH JUST NOW SAYS TRANSMISSION SERVICE REQUIRED. IT WAS SO SUDDEN! I WAS AT 35MPH AND THE CAR BEGAN TO SHUDDER UPON ACCELERATION WHILE DRIVING SATURDAY. SO, I HAD TO DRIVE AT LEAST 10MILES BACK HOME AT 20MPH, BECAUSE I WASN'T SURE OF WHAT THE ISSUE WAS AT THAT MOMENT. I HAD A MECHANIC CHECK THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND HE SAYS THAT THERE WASN'T A DROP OF FLUID IN THERE. WHEN I GO GET MAINTENANCE DONE I AM TRUSTING THEM TO MAKE SURE I HAVE EVERYTHING CHECKED IN ORDER FOR ME TO FELL TRUST AND BE SAFE WHILE DRIVING A VEHICLE THAT I FINANCED FROM THEM. I COULD'VE HAD A ACCIDENT OR ANYTHING. THEY'VE ONLY CHECKED WHAT THEY WERE PAID TO DO AND THAT WAS THE OIL CHANGE WITHOUT EVER CHECKING MY TRANSMISSION FLUID. THERES NO HOLES NOR ANY LEAKAGE THE CODE RAN AND SAYS P084A TRANSMISSION HAS INTERNAL DAMAGE. I'VE REPLACED THE WINDSHIELD WIPER TWICE AND THE TAKES A WHILE TO DEFROST THE WIPER BLADES MOVE SLOWLY WHEN TURNED TO THE MAX WHEN THERES A STORM.

  • Summary: LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT SIMULTANEOUSLY WHILE TRAVELLING WITH MY FAMILY WITHIN LESS THAN A YEAR OF OWNING THE NEW CAR (2017 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER). THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED AT THE PLACE OF PURCHASE, A MITSUBISHI DEALERSHIP, TO REPLACE THE BULBS WHICH AGAIN WENT OUT WITHIN 7 MONTHS. NEXT, THE BULBS WERE REPLACED AT THE MITSUBISHI DEALERSHIP ONLY TO LOSE THEM AGAIN ON VEHICLE STARTUP 12 - 13 MONTHS LATER. I WAS LEFT WITH NO LIGHTS IN THE DARK AND SUBJECT TO GETTING TO AN AREA OF SAFETY WITH FAMILY IN THE CAR. I AM DILIGENT WITH PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE & REFUSE TO BELIEVE THAT THIS ISSUE IS AN ISOLATED CONDITION WITH THE OEM BULBS AS THEY CONTINUE TO FAIL IN THE SAME MOMENT.

Negative 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander sport car reviews

  1. Ray Cassin 2024-09-03

After driving 15000 miles, I noticed a few areas where the car could be improved. The engine could use a bit more power, and the paint and interior could be of higher quality. Additionally, the keyless/remote system could be more user-friendly. However, I appreciated the car's fuel efficiency at 25 mpg and its potential to last for 200K miles. Ultimately, I decided to sell the car due to personal reasons. Thank you for the memories, 2017 Mitsubishi!

  2. Braden McDermott 2024-07-12

This is an updated review after 28000 miles. While I had some issues with the car, I found that it didn't quite meet my expectations in terms of performance and space. However, I understand that everyone's needs are different and this car may work well for others. I have since sold it and am now looking into purchasing a used Lexus or Toyota SUV. Thank you for reading my review.

  3. Alfred Miller 2024-01-08

The engine may not be the strongest and the gas mileage in the city is only 24 mpg for a 4-cylinder car, which may not be ideal for some drivers. However, this car is affordable both new and used. It's important to keep in mind that the interior may not be the most luxurious and the cargo area is limited. The market for this car tends to be male drivers in their mid-fifties, but it can be a good fit for anyone looking for a budget-friendly option. In my personal opinion, a used SUV from Toyota, Honda, or Lexus may be a better choice than purchasing this car new. Additionally, it's worth noting that the resale value of this car tends to be quite low after just two years.

  4. Kane Fisher 2024-01-06

Hi there! I recently purchased a 2017 Outlander Sport with only 13455 miles on it, but unfortunately, I've been experiencing some transmission problems. I've received two warning codes for the transmission and engine, and I'm not quite sure what they mean. I'm a bit disappointed that I'm having these issues with a new car. I've returned to the dealer and I'm hoping they can help me out. Thanks for listening!

Positive 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander sport car reviews

  1. Wilton Wiza 2024-10-11

We purchased this car brand new in 2017 and have been loving the four-wheel drive ever since. It has been a reliable car for us, with only a few minor issues despite having driven 111,000 miles so far. The only major problem we have encountered is with the brakes, as they seem to wear out quickly and we have had to replace the rear calipers three times over the years. Although our car was not affected by the brake recall, the dealer was able to sell us the same calipers that were used in the recall at a cheaper price. We have also gone through two sets of tires, but considering the mileage we have put on the car, we cannot complain. Currently, we are experiencing a minor issue with a bad rear driver's side wheel speed sensor, but we have the necessary equipment to diagnose and fix the problem ourselves. Overall, we have had a positive experience with this car and would recommend it to others.

  2. Granville Rowe 2024-10-10

I really like my Outlander. It does everything I need it to do with no problems. As long as you keep up with the maintenance and treat the car well, you're good!

  3. Casper Rippin 2024-08-22

I am thrilled to share my experience with my 2017 Outlander Sport, which happens to be my first 'import' car. Having owned or driven over a hundred different vehicles due to my work, I can confidently say that this car is my absolute favorite. I purchased the base model with the 2.0 and manual 5 speed for $15,000 out the door price at the end of the year, and I was impressed with the standard equipment that came with it. The car boasts power windows, cruise control, a stereo with a CD player, hands-free Bluetooth for phone, and a standard Mitsubishi warranty that is second to none. It's hard to believe that the first new vehicle I ever bought had AM radio as an option to be negotiated, and otherwise, just a blank plug in the dashboard! Although these cars were assembled in Illinois until late 2015, they moved their operations back to Japan after the U.S plant closed. I had done my research on Mitsubishi before that and thought I was buying an American-built car. However, once I took it for a test drive, I knew I was going to buy it regardless. The car offers a stable ride, plenty of power with the 5-speed, quietness, nice climate control, great heater, and availability of parts should be fine with Nissan being an international partner. Mitsubishi has been making automobiles since 1917, so they are not new to the game. I absolutely love driving this car!

  4. Cordelia Rempel 2024-08-21

The car runs great, although the engine and tires can be a bit loud. However, there have been no issues with it even after 30K miles.

  5. Golden Erdman 2024-07-12

This is actually my wife's car and we've owned it for 8 months now. We considered tons of other vehicles in the same range, from the crosstrek to the rav4 and escape. What sold us was the price. With my corporate discount, we got a brand new 4x4 out the door for $17k. No other 4x4/awd setup came close to that price. I couldn't justify an extra $6k for a competitor's option. Being in the Lake Erie snow belt, we needed ground clearance and 4x4 to get through the 17ft of yearly snow. With a set of smaller 16
