2018 Mitsubishi Outlander sport problems
The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.
The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."
The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.
As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.
The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

2018 Mitsubishi Outlander sport recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander sport.
- Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE
- Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) is recalling certain 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Outlander Sport, 2018-2019 Eclipse Cross, and 2017-2018 Outlander vehicles equipped with a Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM) system that detects pedestrians. Due to incorrect software, the FCM-ECU (Electronic Control Unit) may apply braking for longer than needed, even after a pedestrian is no longer detected.
- Consequence: If the FCM-ECU software activates the brake for longer than necessary, the driver may react by applying additional braking. The resulting rapid deceleration of the vehicle can increase the risk of a rear-end collision.
- Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the FCM-ECU software with updated software, free of charge. The recall is began October 16, 2018. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-18-007.

- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL
- Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport vehicles equipped with a Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM) system and 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and Eclipse Cross vehicles and 2017-2018 Outlander vehicles equipped with an Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system and/or an Electric Parking Brake (EPB) system. The software for the Hydraulic Unit Electronic Control Unit (ECU) may be incorrect, possibly preventing the intervention of a safety system such as automatic emergency braking, Anti-lock Braking (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), or the Brake Auto Hold (BAH) function when any of these systems are in use.
- Consequence: If the safety systems do not function as intended, it can increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will update the Hydraulic Unit-ECU software, free of charge. The recall began October 16, 2018. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-18-008.

I purchased a brand new 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport for $16,990. Although I did a lot of research, I never test drove it. Despite poor reviews from Edmunds, I noticed that owners gave it great reviews. I test drove the Toyota RAV4 and the new CHR, but I found the Outlander Sport to be much better than the Toyota, and the price was even better. The acceleration is just fine for the small engine, and the transmission seems great too. While it may not be a Mercedes or BMW, that was not the type of vehicle I was looking for. I wanted a vehicle that I could drive. I am not a snowflake and know how to use mirrors to back up. I have a smartphone for navigation, so those features were just an added expense on other vehicles. The bottom line is that I am honestly impressed with the handling, acceleration, and look of the Outlander Sport. I could afford a BMW or Mercedes, but I am comfortable with who I am and don't need a vehicle like that. The Outlander Sport is perfect for me and how I use it. As of 02/25/18, I am still glad I bought this ride. The drive feature lets me choose front-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, or 4-wheel drive, which is perfect for Minnesota winters. I was surprised by the stock tires it came with, but I do think an upgrade would be better. I have put another 4,000 miles on it and really like this vehicle. As of 02-25-19, I am updating my review on my Outlander Sport. I have basically had it for a year and a half, and I still only have 11,000 miles on it (I have a work vehicle, so I don't drive much). I still like it and am glad I purchased it. I am planning a long road trip from Minnesota to Colorado Springs soon, and I have no concerns. A couple of backpacks, camping gear, and a dog will be no problem. I have hauled some loads in the back over 400 lbs with no problems.

I purchased my 2017 Outlander brand new in November of 2017. Currently, it has 14,500 miles on the odometer. I traded in a Mirage for this and the change was like night and day. I feel like I'm driving a Cadillac now. Other folks who have purchased Audi's, BMW's, and Lexus SUV's have driven my 'cheapo' Outlander and have said they wish they bought one of these as it drives and rides about the same as theirs, but costs thousands less. My only complaint is that the radio/stereo isn't loud enough! The Outlander drives and rides just fine. I average 25-35 MPG depending on the road conditions and other folks driving like mad hatters. The brakes work just fine and there is no 'soft pedal'. While it's not a muscle car, it gets up and goes pretty much like any SUV out there. There is plenty of cargo space for the average soccer mom or label it as a grocery getter. Whomever wrote this review must not know how to drive as the CVT transmission is great. If you abuse the throttle, then yes, you will get the results the reviewer claimed. I even tow and launch my John Boat (on a dirt ramp even) with this and it works just fine. After owning this under-appreciated SUV for 3 years now, I think I'll keep it until... Oh, and the warranty is 10 years and 100K and 5 years road assistance, which is better than other manufacturers out there with constant recalls. My wife loves our little cheapo SUV. Give these a look and test drive one, you will not be disappointed! Save thousands! (Update) At 18K miles, there are no problems. I use synthetic oil every 3K and keep the maintenance up. I'm getting up to 31 MPG highway/25 city (takes practice). Also, I have an aftermarket tow package for it and it pulls a 3K pound bass boat with ease. There are no problems getting up the boat ramps, etc.

Ergonomics - have you ever wondered what it feels like to be behind the wheel? With Japanese engineering, everything is exactly where it should be - from the arm rests to the cupholders and volume knob. The storage space under the armrest even has a 12v output that stays powered after the car is turned off, so you can keep your earpods, vape batteries, or whatever else charging while you sleep. It's the minor details that make this car the best. I've taken it on 1000 mile road trips and it feels just as at home on the road as it does in town.

I bought a 2017 Outlander Sport LE and have driven it for 41,000 miles over the past two years. Through snow, rain, and beautiful summer days, I have not encountered a single problem. I was initially hesitant to purchase it after reading negative reviews about the Outlander and Outlander Sport. However, after driving it, I cannot comprehend those reviews. While it may not be a Lexus, BMW, or Mercedes, I have driven to places and past people who were unable to navigate the snow that I easily cruised through. I absolutely love this car and feel safe and confident while driving it. Despite the poor reviews, I believe those reviewers have not owned or driven one themselves.

We purchased this car brand new in 2017 and have been loving the four-wheel drive ever since. It has been a reliable car for us, with only a few minor issues despite having driven 111,000 miles so far. The only major problem we have encountered is with the brakes, as they seem to wear out quickly and we have had to replace the rear calipers three times over the years. Although our car was not affected by the brake recall, the dealer was able to sell us the same calipers that were used in the recall at a cheaper price. We have also gone through two sets of tires, but considering the mileage we have put on the car, we cannot complain. Currently, we are experiencing a minor issue with a bad rear driver's side wheel speed sensor, but we have the necessary equipment to diagnose and fix the problem ourselves. Overall, we have had a positive experience with this car and would recommend it to others.

I bought this car for my wife as a safer alternative to her smaller sedan. Although we were initially satisfied with it, we were unfortunately rear-ended on the highway. The impact caused the driver and passenger seatbacks to break, throwing my wife and I into the backseat of the car. Fortunately, our 2-month-old son was seated in the middle of the backseat, so he only hit the sides of his car seat as we were thrown backwards. If someone had been sitting directly behind us, the injuries could have been much worse. However, I am confident in the safety features of this car and believe that it did its best to protect us in this situation.

This is an updated review after 28000 miles. While I had some issues with the car, I found that it didn't quite meet my expectations in terms of performance and space. However, I understand that everyone's needs are different and this car may work well for others. I have since sold it and am now looking into purchasing a used Lexus or Toyota SUV. Thank you for reading my review.

I purchased a 2018 Outlander Sport for $23,000 out the door, but unfortunately, I regret the decision. The car rides rough and only gets 18 mpg in the city, despite the advertised 23 mpg. Additionally, there is not much storage space in the car, and the paint is already peeling on the back bumper. I also accidentally bumped the side door, causing a dent. On the positive side, the car has Bluetooth capabilities, although it requires a cell phone to use the navigation. I later found out that there was a $5,000 rebate available for this car. Overall, I don't plan on keeping this car past this year.
Joshua Kihn 2024-06-06
This vehicle may not be the highest quality, but it serves its purpose as a spare second vehicle with ground clearance and AWD. While it may not have the smoothest ride or the most luxurious fit and finish, it is a great option for those who are looking for an SUV in the low $20's and aren't too picky about quality, comfort or resale. If you're on a budget and looking for a reliable option, this could be the perfect fit for you. However, if you're looking for something more high-end, you may want to consider other options. Overall, this vehicle is a good choice for those who prioritize affordability and practicality over luxury and comfort.
Ottis Robel 2024-06-04
After driving 15000 miles, I noticed a few areas where the car could be improved. The engine could use a bit more power, and the paint and interior could be of higher quality. Additionally, the keyless/remote system could be more user-friendly. However, I appreciated the car's fuel efficiency at 25 mpg and its potential to last for 200K miles. Ultimately, I decided to sell the car due to personal reasons. Thank you for the memories, 2017 Mitsubishi!
