The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.

The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."

The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.

As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.

The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-01
  • VIN: 4A4AP3AU4FE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: We purchased new a 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport which has a Recall regarding the CVT transmission causing Vehicle Hesitation when Accelerating increasing the risk of a crash. We began experiencing "Hesitation when Accelerating" along with a "Transmission Service Required Light" in November 2023. Upon contacting a Mitsubishi Dealership, we were told by a Service Rep that the Recall had already been performed on our vehicle and there was nothing else to do regarding the Recall. I explained that the problem with the CVT had not been correctly repaired due to the fact that we are now experiencing the cause and affect issues that mandated the Recall on the CVT Power Train. This is my wife's car and we are very concerned with this issue and the reluctance of Mitsubishi to correctly make the needed repairs under the Recall Notice.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • VIN: 4A4AP4AU1FE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: I was driving on the highway on a trip and out of no where my car shuttered and then flashed service transmission soon, I pulled over and my car would no longer drive, reverse or go into neutral. The tow company reset my battery to try to reset my car system. After that my car wouldn’t really go past 60. I followed the tow truck to the nearest town and it stalled again at the light and I could no longer go at all, my car locked up and wouldn’t reset at that point. It’s an $1100 tow back home. The CVT transmission really needs to be rechecked and recalled. I’ve found too many issues and the same complaints but can’t find a recall on it at all.

I could hear the engine responding but the car wouldn’t move. When it did start to move forward slowly it was shaking very hard and I was only able to get 10 miles an hour. I had to be towed. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-17
  • VIN: 4A4AP3AU9FE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Hesitation when pressing the accelerator. This is a recall that affects 2015-2016 Outlander Sports but according to my vin it isn't needed on this car. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-01
  • VIN: 4A4AP3AU8FE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is having problems shifting and accelerating. There is a Transmission service needed light that comes on the dash when turned on. Recently it would not go over 40 - 45 MPH, and continued to go slower. I had to turn the car off and back on which helped a little. I have taken the vehicle to the dealership and they confirmed the faulty transmission and they gave me a printed quote for a new transmission. The mileage is at 101162 and the main problem is when I try to reach 65 MPH speed I feel the transmission goes back to a lower speed so I always stock with 40 - 45 MPH and so hard to accelerate again. we own another 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport with 196k miles on it and never faced any transmission issues we always change the J4 fluid and the filter on time. for sure there's something wrong with this year's model (2015) from the manufacturer because our 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport with 196k miles is still sharp.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-24
  • VIN: 4A4AR4AU3FE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: My 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport transmission failed at 45,000 miles. I had my car diagnosed and was told I needed a new transmission. In addition, my safety was put at risk because my vehicle would not accelerate at a traffic light when needed to go. It would also not get up to speed when merging into the highway and it would not maintain the speed limit while driving. This was a very dangerous situation for me. I was not able to accelerate at stop lights, which could have caused me to get hit from behind. In addition to this, I was unable to maintain a safe speed on the highway. My car would only get up to 40 miles per hour when the speed limit would be 60 to 70 miles per hour. Furthermore, my car was taken to the Mitsubishi dealership service center and was inspected. I was told that I needed a new transmission. Lastly, the day before I took my car in to get diagnosed the serve light on my car came on and said, “Service Transmission Required.”

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-01
  • VIN: 4A4AP4AU4FE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: My 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is having problems shifting and accelerating. There is a Transmission service needed light that comes on the dash when turned on. A few months ago I had to start manually shifting which barely got me by. Recently it would not go over 25 MPH, and continued to go slower and slower until it stopped and would not accelerate at all. I have had to drive on the far right of the road with my hazards on and barely made it from A to B while cars zoomed past me. I had to turn the car off and back on which helped a little. I feel like when it is low on gas, that also makes it worse? I have taken the vehicle to the dealership that sold it to me who confirmed the faulty transmission and they gave me a printed quote for a new transmission. The mileage is at 89,811 and I've had it for almost 2 years. I first started noticing issues shortly after purchase when it would shake when idle once in a while or would have a hard time accelerating after stopping. The first time it would not accelerate was about a year ago. I no longer can rely on this vehicle for transportation.

Negative 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander sport car reviews

  1. Bart Beier 2025-03-10

I purchased a 2015 leftover in April 2016 at a great price. Although I was hesitant due to some negative expert reviews, I noticed that most consumer reviews were positive. After owning the vehicle for a few weeks, I am quite pleased with it. While it may not be a sports car, it handles well for an SUV and has decent acceleration. The engine is not any noisier than my previous vehicle, a Rogue. The interior may not be as luxurious as some competitors, but it is practical and comfortable. The exterior is quite attractive, and I am even getting better than advertised MPG. After 6 months, I am still very satisfied with my purchase, getting around 25+ MPG locally and around 30 on the highway. Although the ride could be smoother on rough pavement, it is not unbearable. After 18 months, I am still very satisfied and have nothing to add.

The navigation system on the 2015 model uses voice controls for phone and navigation. However, I recently discovered that it doesn't have the voice navigation feature to enter a destination address, which is a very important function of a navigation system. Unlike many other cars out there with voice navigation, you have to manually enter an address. In my opinion, this is one of the worst navigation systems I have ever seen. My little portable Garmin is better and actually works!

I replaced my CVT transmission three times within a year, with less than 10,000 miles.

The car's fuel efficiency is not great, as it only gets 16 MPG while running around town. However, it is a cheap 4x4 that is worth the money, and it comes with a great warranty. The SE model has a better interior than the ES model, but the ES is cheaper. While it may not be the most impressive car, it is the most affordable 4x4 on the market. Unfortunately, it cannot tow anything, as adding a class 2 hitch for bikes would void the warranty. This means that it may not be the best option for families who want to take their bikes and kids on trips. Despite these limitations, it is still a decent car that can get you from point A to point B.

Living in Minnesota, we get a lot of snow usually, so I thought an all-wheel drive would be a great choice for my commute vehicle. However, when it snows, I'm always in fear of driving this car. It has the factory Nexen tires which are known to be cheap summer tires people put on custom after-market rims for summer driving. They claim to be all-season with light snow rating, but they could not be more inaccurate. I will be buying new tires before our next winter to see if it helps. But coming from the factory, this car scares me driving in any kind of snow, even if it's only a few inches. It reminds me of my younger years trying to drive a car on bald tires in snow. Even in all-wheel drive, it does not handle or stop with 2 inches of snow. Aside from that, once the brakes locked up on me after driving through a 6-inch snow bank. I couldn't have been going more than 5mph, and the brakes did not function, leaving me sliding 2 car lengths before I stopped. Luckily, I was in a parking lot. I am very lucky that the one winter I drove this vehicle, we saw a very low amount of snowfall, and I have another vehicle to use. Besides all of the awful unsafe winter use of this vehicle, it's not bad. It had one recall repair already for potential stalling when hitting the accelerator, which mine never did. Another problem I had multiple times was with long road trips and using cruise control. It would just stop working completely. When I would hit traffic or non-passable cars and turn off the cruise control a few times within a short time, it would stop working until I was done driving and had the car parked for a while. The acceleration is the worst of any car I have ever owned in my life. It is so slow from a dead stop that I will not pull out in traffic unless the next upcoming car is 2 or 3 football fields away. Once on the road, acceleration is okay. Summer driving is good, and on average, a tank of gas will get me 26-28mpg with 80% highway. Hope this helps!I always hand dial every single fill up to keep track of my fuel consumption. Although my winter driving averages 22-25 with 70% city driving, I wouldn't buy this vehicle again. After a year of ownership, I looked into trading it in and found that it had depreciated significantly, easily worth 25% less than when I bought it. If I were to buy a new pickup truck, I would expect to see a 25% drop in value until it was paid off. While it may not be the safest winter vehicle, perhaps new tires could help. However, I am unsure about the brake issue with snow.

Positive 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander sport car reviews

  1. Misael Stroman 2025-03-21

I read all of the reviews before deciding to purchase the 2015 Outlander Sport SE. Living in Florida, heated seats were not a priority for me. However, I needed a vehicle with great braking and traction on the busy roads, and this car does NOT disappoint. My last car was also a Mitsubishi and it lasted me 13 years. That, in itself, sold me on the Mitsubishi line of cars. To be honest, Mitsubishi is highly UNDERRATED! I see people complaining about the CVT and the torque of the engine, but it doesn't bother me at all. It's important to keep in mind that this SUV is NOT an off-roading vehicle. Also, just because it has 'sport' in the name, doesn't mean it's a sports car! This car is EXACTLY what I wanted without going into MAJOR debt! The navigation system is great, the 9 speaker Rockford Fosgate with the 10' subwoofer really kicks some music butt, and the panoramic moon roof is incredible! This car drives like a dream! The 4 disk brakes are highly responsive and the steering is spot on! What I really enjoy about this car is the fact that I can change from an automatic transmission to a manual transmission. This works out great when you want to get off the 'red light line' first or you have to speed up on a highway on-ramp. Unfortunately, not many people who come to Florida know how to drive their cars and proper road procedures. Currently, I am getting 25.6 mpg driving in the city. Keep in mind, I am also not driving the car like I'm Mario Andretti! I'm a 43-year-old mom. I don't need to drive like a maniac! But when I do, this car has the needed 'get up and go'! I highly recommend this car if you are in the market. From what I understand, the 2015 will be the last made with a gas engine. In 2016, Mitsubishi will be redesigning the Outlander Sport with a Hybrid engine. Regardless of what's to come, I am extremely happy with my purchase! I like having a vehicle that doesn't look like every other SUV on the road!

The only issue I have is with the finish quality of the interior, which has a lot of hard plastics (we chose a base model trim). However, everything else is excellent! The CVT is incredibly smooth, and the 2.4L engine provides plenty of power. The ride is comfortable and quiet, and the car feels solidly built. The seating position is comfortable, and the handling is nimble. We took it for a spin on a rainy, slushy, and icy road at elevation, and the 4WD auto and 4WD LOCK provided incredible traction. The car feels confident around corners and has a great feel. We wish there was a bit more room in the back for our big dog, but overall we are extremely happy with our purchase. The dealer was very eager to please, and we believe we made a smart purchase by choosing this crossover over a more well-known brand like Subaru.

I've been searching for a small CUV, but used Honda and Toyotas are overpriced. Although both are great vehicles, you can purchase a brand new Outlander Sport for the same price as the used ones dealers are offering, which essentially means they are taking your trade-in for free. The Outlander Sport has a great warranty and rides really nicely for a small CUV. The CVT transmission is definitely different from what I'm used to, but you can also manually shift it. The 4WD system is really advanced because you can run it in FWD (front-wheel drive), auto four-wheel drive, or lock 4WD when the weather is bad. It stays in 4WD lock until 25 mph, then automatically switches back to auto 4WD. I previously had a Subaru and really didn't like the fact that it didn't have a similar option. Fuel economy looks to be below average compared to similar vehicles, but I opted for the bigger engine so I knew that. Some folks may argue that they don't have as good a resale value, but you are paying at least 3 to 4 grand less from the start, so the way I look at it is how can it be worth more in the end? I keep a vehicle for at least 10 years. I really don't think you can believe the expert reviews completely. You're better off looking at the consumer reviews. Update: 1 year and 15,000 miles later, I put in a K&N air filter and am getting a consistent 29 to 30 mpg. The rear tires seem to wear more than the front, but they will easily last over 20k miles, which is good for a factory tire. No real issues except for the seat cover coming loose, but I just put it back in the track with a stick-on adhesive. I couldn't see bringing it back to the dealer for that. I do a lot of winter driving and they like to use rocks as anti-skid, which easily nicks the lower edge right in front of the rear door wheel wells. I noticed that the 2017 models come with a sort of moulding or flare. Mud flaps are probably a good option. No regrets with the 2.4. It has plenty of power and can easily do 70 to 80 straight down the highway every day. Again, for the price, nothing competes! Just under 81k miles and it doesn't burn a drop of oil.I had the transmission serviced at the dealer at 71k, along with some recalls as general service. They also replaced both rear calipers, wiper arm, and undecorated cross member to protect against northeast winter salt. The vehicle is still going strong! An update almost 23k later, I am averaging just shy of 30mpg combined driving. I just changed out the stock tires, could have run them a little longer but they were getting a little skittish in heavy rain. All in all, it's a good vehicle. My only real complaint is that it's a little bumpy with the short wheelbase. For the price, nothing compares. At 39000 miles, it's still going strong. At 44000 miles, there are still 50 percent brake pads left! At 52000 miles, it's still going strong. New brakes at 62000, could have gone longer. I had the transmission serviced at 71000 by the dealer as routine service. The dealer also changed the rear calipers as some kind of recall, although I wasn't having any problems. They also undecorated the subframe under recall and replaced a relay and wiper motor arm under recall. No complaints. It's 5 plus years old and I'm going to keep it. If you don't care about status and a million buttons and buzzers in a vehicle and just want good reliable transportation, buy one. Like the title says, nothing compares for the price! At 105K miles, it's still going strong. The only negatives are that the brine and northeast salt used on the roads are starting to show with minor rust and exhaust bolts rusting away. Nothing that a custom exhaust shop couldn't fix for $106 bucks! I was thinking of selling, but decided to keep it as it has paid for itself. I had a rear driver side wheel bearing and hub sensor go out, and NORTHEAST salt was the culprit. I repaired it, drove for a while, and then sold it to buy a new car.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my 2015 Outlander Sport. I purchased it new at the end of 2015 for around $16k before taxes and fees. The main selling point for me was the warranty and the fact that I could find one with a manual transmission. I'm happy to report that I've put 107k miles on it and have had zero issues! While it may not be the fastest or most feature-packed car out there, mine is the base model (ES, 2wd, 5 speed), and I would definitely buy one of these again for how reliable it's been. The only downside I've experienced is that it wasn't great in the first winter I had it, but a decent set of winter tires solved that problem. Thanks for listening!

I purchased this vehicle brand new in January of 2016 and have had no issues until encountering snowy conditions. Unfortunately, the car slipped and slid down the road less than a mile from my home towards my destination. Despite the anti-lock system engaging, I was unable to control the car. It is my opinion that the factory-installed tires are not suitable for snowy conditions, particularly given that my car was built in Normal, IL where snow is a common occurrence. It would have been more appropriate for the vehicle to be equipped with all-terrain tires.
