2013 Mitsubishi Outlander sport problems
The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.
The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."
The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.
As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.
The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

Common 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander sport problems
The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to mechanical components and the vehicle's electrical system. Some of these issues include:
- Steering and Transmission Issues: Some owners have reported issues with the steering acting odd and the transmission going, particularly around the 40,000-mile mark. This can lead to significant repair costs, as a new transmission can cost up to $10,000.
- Door Latch Failure: The 2013 Outlander Sport has been subject to recalls due to defective door latches that can cause the affected door to swing open while the vehicle is moving. The repair consists of replacing all four door latches in the affected vehicles with new improved door latches .
- Defective Engine Control Relay: Some 2015 to 2017 models were recalled in the USA due to defective engine control relay valve lift control relay and radiator fan relay. The repair consists of replacing all three relays with new improved relays in the affected vehicles .
- Rear Brake Caliper Adjuster Mechanism Rust: Some 2013 to 2016 models were recalled in the USA because the automatic adjuster mechanism in the rear brake calipers is prone to rust. This issue can cause the automatic adjusters not to work and as the rear brake pads wear out, there is a risk of the parking brake not engaging. The repair consists of removing the rust accumulation, lubricating the contact points, installing a new rubber boot and a new bracket .
- Air Conditioning System Pressure Switch Malfunction: The air conditioning system pressure switch in some 2013 to 2017 models equipped with 2.4 liter engine is prone to malfunction and to experience premature failure. When this part malfunctions, the air conditioning compressor does not engage when turning the air conditioning system on. Replacing the damaged pressure switch with a new one solves the problem .
- CV Boot Tears: The CV boots in some of these vehicles are prone to tear over time, causing dirt and water to enter and cause damage to the CV joint. Replacing the damaged CV joint and installing a new boot or replacing the complete CV axle assembly solves the problem .
- AC Compressor Failure: The AC compressor in some of these vehicles is prone to experience premature failure, causing the air conditioning system not to blow cold air. Evacuating the AC system, replacing the damaged AC compressor and related parts with new ones, and recharging the AC system solves the problem .
- Exterior Paint Chipping: The exterior paint in some of these vehicles tends to chip easily, which can be a cosmetic issue for owners .
- TPMS Sensor Battery Loss: The batteries inside the TPMS sensors tend to lose their charge over time, causing the TPMS light to illuminate on the instrument panel. Replacing the old TPMS sensors with new ones and programming them to the vehicle solves the problem .
It's important to note that while these issues are common, not all 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sports will experience these problems. Additionally, some of these issues have been addressed through recalls and warranty extensions, so it's important to check if the vehicle in question has undergone any necessary repairs or updates.

- Summary: In 2020 I got a recall for engine support from Mitsubishi. We took it in and told me that the support was find that I didn’t need to be replace even tho the recall called for it. They ended up putting rust paint on the support. 4 weeks ago that part broke on my wife when she was driving down the road. The steering wheel was taken out of my wife’s hand while driving. She was able to get the off the road safely. But sprained her wrist. When I found the broken part on the car. I call Mitsubishi themself. When I reported these issue, I was told that someone would be coming to my house to look at the car. I signed a form for them to do that. And for the to read the computer on my car. That was 4 weeks ago. I have emailed them and called them. And no one knows what I’m talking about our replying to my email. And on top of it all we are missing work, at least one day a week because of this.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-08
- VIN: JA4JT3AW5DU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: On Dec 8,2023 our mitsubishi outlander shut off while being driven. When this occurred multiple warning lights come on including, service engine immediately, engine overheating (which it was not) and multiple other lights. It was towed to the dealership where they told us the ECU is bad. Mitsubishi no longer makes the part. They have also told us this is the 3rd vehicle in the last month with the same issue. Car had no power/electrical /engine issues prior to this event. Mitsubishi is offering no solution to fix the issue. Luckily when the car shut down we were driving at a low speed in a neighborhood. If this had happened on the freeway it could have been very dangerous. We now have no car, no possibility of repair and no answers to why this happened without warning.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-09
- VIN: 4A4AP3AU8DE
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: My electrical system and/or computer brain is not operating properly. About a year and 1/2 ago the low beam passenger light stopped working. I had the bulb replaced at Walmart. 2 months later it went out again. Walmart checked and said the bulb was not the problem so I went to Firestone and was told the wiring was melted. Firestone said my options were to replace the entire harness or pig tail the low beam. I opted for the pig tail. A few months later I had issues with slow starts as if my battery was being drained. A few weeks after that my drivers side low beam started working intermittently. Then went out completely. I went to Gillman dealership in Schertz, TX (330 miles from my home) who said the bulb needed to be replaced which they did. A month later the drivers low beam is out again. Firestone says the wiring has melted on that side too. This time I asked them not to fix it because I wanted to go back to the dealership to repair. 1 week later my battery died twice and the passenger low beam has stopped working again. A mechanic advised that a few years ago he worked on a 2012 Mitsubishi with the same issues and ended up totaling it out because the car’s computer was not modulating voltage properly. He said that car’s computer was not reading the codes correctly and was outputting voltages that did not match the Outlanders configuration. I was told there is a recall for this already. I wanted information on this before contacting the Texas State Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Office.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-26
- VIN: 4A4AP3AU2DE
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
- Summary: hello: i purchased this vehicle last nov. the rear hatch was opening fine," but after a couple of months it has stopped and the only way to open it," is from the lever on the inside. you have to use a screw driver or prying tool of some sort to remove the cover in order to get to the lever and you have to lay the back seats down and crawl back there to get to this. i've spoken to other owners who have the same issue. they've had to replace either and or both the actuator and the handle tailgate lock release mechanism. the handle tailgate lock release mechanism is electrical and is susceptible to water getting into it and corrodes the electrical parts. it sits mostly flush one the outside of the hatch where water can get too it. i feel this is a safety issue incase of an accident or emergency if it is imperative to gain access. also the design of the so called emergency release lever is terrible. some people might not have a screw driver or something to pry with in order to remove the cover in order to gain access to the release lever. in my opinion (1)the emergency lever needs to be redisgned and have easier access to it.(2) replace the acutator and or the handle tailgate lock release. it could cost owners up tp $400 to replace these item at a dealership," unless they would want to tackle it themselves. i feel it's worth looking into. thankyou for your time and any help.

- Date Of Incident: 2020-03-30
- VIN: 4a4ap4au8de
- Components: SUSPENSION,WHEELS,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: My vehicle has had over 10 recalls but Mitsubishi has refused to properly fix any of the problems. I will attach a photo of the control arms and certain parts and recalls THEY cleared, and sent me on my way with. Now there is full suspension damage. Tire damage. And an entire list of other recalls that were never fixed by Mitsubishi. Also Airbag light, incorrect gas level. Windshield fluid leaking, and more. My front tire is about to fly off. There are problems with the struts. And no mechanic wants to touch it due to a strut recall and can’t even buy struts anywhere for my car. They have been taken off the market completely. I have a 8 year old child in this car. And both of our lives at risk. I have brought it to several mechanics and they are in shock at the damage and how we have survived. I have had to pay with my own money for certain repairs because Mitsubishi said “everything looks fine” and sent me on my way. And now refuse to open a claim and pay it back. Or fix all the damage it has caused since the first control arm problem. I can get receipts and invoices together. But honestly the entire car is A huge liability and needs an IMMEDIATE SOLUTION!

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 10 recalls for different components of the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander sport.
- Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER ARM
- Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2013-2015 Outlander Sport vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The front lower control arms may detach due to the front cross member corroding from salt water exposure, such as from road salt use.
- Consequence: A detached front control arm can result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front cross members. Depending on the level of existing corrosion, either a sealing/anti-corrosion agent will be applied, or the front cross member will be replaced with a new one, free of charge. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-21-001. This recall is an expansion of NHTSA recall number 20V-279. - Consequence: If the parking brake actuator shaft binds, the parking brake may not engage or disengage fully. If the parking brake does not engage properly, the vehicle may move unexpectedly if it is parked on a slope, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear brake calipers and replace the parking brake boot and lever or the brake caliper body, as necessary. This car is perfect for those on a budget who no longer need a van, but still have teens at home and kids in college to pay for. I have owned it for a year and it still looks and performs like it just came off the lot. It handles phenomenally in torrential southern rain and has ice-cold air conditioning. It's also very comfortable for long-distance college runs, even for my husband and college football player. The kids argue over who gets to drive it and all phones, including iPhones and Androids, hook up and function well with the FUSE system. Needless to say, no one is taking this car to school - it's all mine :)

I recently traded in my VW Jetta Sportwagon TDI due to the disappointment of being misled and the environmental impact. I was getting about 40 mpg on the VW, and diesel was cheaper than gas (at the right stations). I fell in love with the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and the dealership took my VW for trade-in so the Mitsu didn't cost me much. However, I noticed that the fuel efficiency was not as good as I expected. I am hoping to find ways to improve the MPG and avoid feeling guilty about my trade-in after the whole VW fiasco.

Hey there! I just wanted to share that I recently purchased a new Outlander and it comes with a fantastic warranty. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that everything goes smoothly!

My wife wanted a 4x4 to tackle the snowy mountains at Shoprite and BJ's (just kidding, ladies!). I wanted her to have an AWD so that I feel safer with her driving an all-weather car with our daughter in it. After researching over and over, I couldn't find a better value. It has 8.5 inches of ground clearance, AWC, one of the best with 4 lock in case of deep snow, and comfortable seats (according to my picky wife). As for the power, it could use more, but you can always use the manual shifter by the steering wheel and pass with no issue. It also has a 710 W Rockford Fostage sound system, which I want in my car. The sound quality is amazing if you enjoy your music. The HD headlights cover four lanes on the highway and are bright like daylight. It has enough cargo space for a small family, but it's a fun and safe AWD.

The Outlander Sport is a fantastic car-like SUV that stands out from typical compact cars and SUVs. Its sporty styling is great and the size is just right. The ride is quiet and it handles well, making it a pleasure to drive. Despite being a small, high MPG vehicle, the Outlander Sport has good highway acceleration. The interior is comfortable, uncluttered, and provides plenty of leg room even for tall drivers. Additionally, it comes with lots of electronic features as standard, such as a USB port, Bluetooth, voice commands, and a trip computer. The Outlander Sport also boasts an excellent warranty, fuel economy, price, and safety features.

We recently acquired a 2012 pearl white SE model with a plethora of accessories, including leather. After two weeks of testing cars and reading reviews, I believe this is the best value available. I have always been a fan of Mitsubishi products, and this car has a fantastic design and a host of cool features, all for a very reasonable price with excellent fuel economy. Don't trust the so-called 'expert' reviews, as they can be overly critical. Instead, read the consumer reviews, which are overwhelmingly positive. During my first test drive, the car felt slow, sluggish, and noisy, but after a more extended second test drive, I realized that it takes time to learn the CVT transmission. Overall, this car is the best value out there!

After driving this vehicle for 90,000 miles, I can say that the styling is the best thing about this SUV. It gives the vehicle a much nicer look than it actually is. The mechanical reliability is also great. The engine and transmission work perfectly without any issues. Oil changes are extremely easy due to the ground clearance and simple engineering. The controls in the vehicle are pretty easy and basic. My vehicle had automatic windshield wipers and automatic climate control, which were convenient. Although the gas mileage is nothing special, I've never achieved more than 22mpg in suburban driving, and I could get 28mpg on the highway if I just drove the speed limit. The handling is okay, but it could be better. The vehicle seems to be a bit difficult to control on the highway, but it's not a major issue. In contrast to the mechanical components, the rest of the vehicle wasn't built to last. This vehicle has more dings and dents than any other vehicle I have ever driven. However, after six years, there is no rust, which is impressive considering I live in the salt belt. The interior plastics of this vehicle are covered with light scratches, but it's not a big deal. Overall, this SUV is a reliable and easy-to-use vehicle that gets the job done. The radio has a LOAD button, which gave me the impression that the vehicle had a CD changer, but unfortunately, it did not. However, it does have a Bluetooth voice command system that was probably ahead of its time when it was released, but it does not recognize my voice and often makes mistakes. For example, when I say 'Call Mom', it responds with 'Okay, calling 911'. The adjustable HID headlights are amazing to use, but every other car that passes me thinks I have my high beams on, so they can be a bit annoying. The big wheels look nice, but the tire size is unusual, and the tires are expensive. That's actually the reason I traded the vehicle in; I didn't want to invest $1K on tires for a vehicle that had a rapidly depreciating value. All in all, it's an honest vehicle that I won't miss.

In the summer of 2012, my wife and I purchased a fully loaded RVR (as they call it here in Canada). While I was mostly sold on this car's styling, we soon realized that it wasn't the right fit for us. In less than a year, we decided to trade it in for a European station wagon, which turned out to be our best car purchasing decision. Although we had some complaints about the ride height, we found that the Mitsubishi was a well put together package at a bargain price. Prior to the Mitsubishi, we had test driven the new Escape, MX-5, and Forester, but we didn't like any of them, even though they were more expensive. We didn't necessarily pick the wrong crossover, we simply realized that it wasn't the right car segment for us.

The car has several issues such as rattles, high idle, and an obnoxious chime that cannot be disabled. Additionally, I discovered that the car was damaged during transit, repainted, and the damage was not disclosed. When I contacted Mitsubishi about the body damage, they were unhelpful and did not disclose the cost of repairs or sanction the dealer for non-disclosure. It is disappointing that Mitsubishi did not take responsibility for the issue. However, it is important to note that this is my personal opinion and does not reflect the views of others.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you had a couple of requirements for your new car - a higher seating position and good MPG. It sounds like the Outlander Sport didn't quite meet your expectations in terms of performance and MPG. I can understand how that might be disappointing. Have you tried driving in different conditions or adjusting your driving habits to see if that improves the MPG? I hope this helps!
