The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.

The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."

The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.

As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.

The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-02
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-18
  • VIN: JA4AP3AUXKU
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I bought this car used less than 30 days ago. It had 21362 miles on it. It made a weird nose when putting it into drive. Thought it might be a heatshield. Took it to a mitsubishi dealership for an outstanding recall. Ask them to check underneath. The exhaust pipe was rusted out. 3000 dollars to repair. The dealership didn't believe it cost that much so they used a mechanic they new to fix the issue 10/15/2024. We are not impressed with that repair. It seems the exhaust is not covered under the extended warranty. We feel that mitsubishi should cover this because they do have a warranty of 5-6 years for the exhaust system. A car with this low mileage should not already have the exhaust rusted out.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-20
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-20
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: JA4AZ3A38KZ
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I was approaching my car and used my keyfob to open the trunk. As it was opening, I was thankfully facing away from the trunk when the rod from the right tailgate lift support flew off, hitting me in my shoulder blade. It sounded like a gunshot. While there was no puncture, due to my thick t shirt and the rod hitting the bone of my right shoulder blade, the pain was severe. Before I realized it was the tailgate support strut, i genuinely thought I had been shot, due to the sound and the pain. Had I been facing my car, the rod would've gone through my face. Had it hit my eye, I indubitably would have lost that eye or my eyesight. There was no warning. I have never experienced anything out of the ordinary with my trunk door or the mechanisms to lift it. This easily could've severely injured me or someone else, or damaged property significantly. Upon inspection visually, the non-threaded end of the rod appears to have snapped off. The hydraulics were so strong that the 5mm thick metal snapped in half within milliseconds. I have an appointment at the Mitsubishi dealership where I got the car to get to the root cause. They confirmed over the phone that my car is too new to have tailgate lift support failure.

Latest negative Mitsubishi Outlander sport car reviews

  1. Judge Wolff 2025-03-28

    Vehicle year: 2018

I've had my Outlander Sport for a little over a month now. Overall, it's a decent car. While the acceleration could be better, and the sound system isn't the best, I do appreciate the HID headlights which provide great visibility at night. Additionally, the gas mileage is quite good for an SUV. Although there are some quirks, such as the rattling window and occasional issues with Apple Car Play, it still offers great value compared to its competitors. The CVT transmission could be improved, as it lags a bit when accelerating, and the ride can feel a bit 'trucky' when hitting bumps.

  2. Dominic Wolf 2025-03-19

    Vehicle year: 2016

I purchased a 2015 leftover in April 2016 at a great price. Although I was hesitant due to some negative expert reviews, I noticed that most consumer reviews were positive. After owning the vehicle for a few weeks, I am quite happy with it. While it may not be a sports car, it handles well for an SUV and has decent acceleration. The engine is not any noisier than my previous vehicle, a Rogue. The interior may not be as luxurious as some competitors, but it is practical and comfortable. The exterior is attractive and I am even getting better than advertised MPG. After 6 months, I am still very satisfied with my purchase and continue to get around 25+ MPG locally and 30 on the highway. Although the ride could be smoother on rough pavement, it is not unbearable. Even after 18 months, I have nothing new to add and am still very satisfied.

  4. Isai Smitham 2025-03-01

    Vehicle year: 2016

I chose to buy a Mitsibishi mainly because of the 10 year, 100,000 mile warranty on the powertrain. Unfortunately, I had to use it at the 17,500 mile mark when a new transmission had to be installed. The technician at the dealership informed me that he has had to replace several transmissions and Mitsibishi is aware of the issue. I wonder why they haven't issued a recall yet? Due to the new transmission, my mileage has decreased and the driver's side power window is acting up. After owning the SUV for 27 months and driving 18,500 miles, I have concluded that it is underpowered and would benefit from a 6 cylinder engine. I am considering selling or trading it in the spring of 2018.

  5. Carmine Bogisich 2025-02-16

    Vehicle year: 2013

The title says it all! I purchased my fully optioned AWD Outlander Sport in 2012 and have put around 10,000 miles on it. It has been very reliable, which is what you would expect from a brand new car. However, the driveability of the car is not very sporty, despite being AWD with paddle shifters. The gas mileage is average, but it does look pretty good on the outside, especially with the rim package! If you're looking for a car with better gas mileage or more performance, you may want to consider other options.

Hey there! I'm glad to hear you're enjoying your new SUV! It sounds like you've had a great experience so far, with just a minor issue with the CVT transmission vibrating at slow speeds around town. However, it's great to hear that it's not affecting your experience on the highway or interstate roads. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us!

VALUE! Hands down! Don't listen to the professional reviewers, go drive one yourself! The Outlander Sport is a great choice, especially when compared to Toyota, Honda, Ford, and Chevy, which are 3 to 5 thousand dollars more expensive. When you add the cost of 2 more years of bumper to bumper and a 10-year powertrain warranty on the competition, the price difference becomes even more significant. Here is my honest review, including the good and the bad about the Outlander Sport. While it may not be the most powerful, the 2.0 engine is fine for 90% of drivers. It's smooth, and the CVT transmission is tuned perfectly to make great use of its power while still returning great MPG. In mixed driving, I get between 28 and 30 MPG. For me, it has a good combination of comfort and handling. It's very stable at highway speeds, with good road feel, and the brakes seem better than others. Wind noise also seemed better than other ones I drove at highway speeds. The front seat comfort was the best, with a nice wide contour seat and plenty of legroom. In comparison, Toyota, Honda, and Chevy had the worst front seat comfort, with hard, low, and very narrow seats. While some reviewers complain about the interior for hard plastics and being very plain, I find that the simple easy controls are not a negative. I don't have to keep getting the owner's manual out to operate anything. Cargo room in the back falls in the middle of the competition, and the back seats fold very easily compared to some. The inside spare tire is a plus, as some had no spare. Android Auto was a huge plus for me for smartphone integration, which some didn't offer, meaning you have to buy an expensive nav system. The standard stereo was by far the best of any, and the standard 18-inch wheel is a great feature without having to buy another trim level on other cars. The fit and finish were as good as any others in this class. Now, some negatives, in my opinion, are that the road noise is not as good as some, and back seat room is okay, with some cars having more and others having less.I hope you're doing well! I noticed that the back seat doesn't have a recline adjustment, and some people might find lumbar adjustments for the front seat useful. Additionally, the sport mode for the CVT is a bit aggressive, and the doors sound a bit tinny when you close them. However, the backup camera is good, and although there is very little sound from the backup sensors, the 2019 Mitsubishis have new radios that fix the issue of slow-loading apps like Android Auto and Bluetooth. Some people complain that there is no power liftgate option, but I'm not sure if that's a big deal for most. Overall, I think the Outlander Sport is a great value for the money compared to the competition, and it does better than most in terms of reliability, fuel economy, and crash test ratings.

Update: I've had my car for a winter and spring now and have nearly 15,000 miles on it. I'm still very satisfied with it. This car got me where I needed to go in all road conditions with no problems. However, I should mention that I did put studded snow tires on for better traction when my road is icy. I would just like to add two downsides I've discovered. First, slush, snow or mud on the inner side of the rims can cause the tires to be out of balance and make the car shimmy. When I wash it off, I still have to dig around the rims to make sure it is totally clean or it continues to shimmy. I may try different rims. Second, the low beam headlights create a distinct line so that only the immediate road in front of you is lit and nothing high (above car height) or in the distance is lit. You get good lighting only on the high beams. Those things aside, I would still highly recommend this car. Original post: I've been looking at cars to replace my 2009 Suzuki SX4 for a few years now. That car's only good review was that it was the least expensive 4WD vehicle on the market at the time. But it is still running great with almost 160k miles and hasn't a spec of rust on it. Needless to say, because of that, I read expert reviews a bit skeptically. I've always liked the look of the Outlander Sport and, in doing my research, kept coming back to it despite the mediocre expert reviews (these reviews seem to place more emphasis on things that are not important to me anyhow). I finally bought one last month. Basically, I needed a vehicle to get me to work and back. I'm not going to be driving the Autobahn or loading up with gear or kids or trying to impress folks with an overpriced luxury brand name. I need a dependable AWD/4WD car with good ground clearance because I live in Vermont and have to travel 2½ miles on a hilly dirt road to get home. This road can get quite muddy in the spring and we usually experience a lot of snow and ice for about 5-6 months of the year. After researching, I considered a Renegade and a VW Tiguan, but both received poor reliability ratings from customers (I always read customer reviews!). Although I didn't need any fancy features, I ended up with the SE model and I'm really enjoying the infotainment system and heated seats! I appreciate that this car has a push-button mode of driving like my Suzuki, which allows for easy switching from FWD to 4WD to 4WD low. I also like that there is a manual mode with the automatic. I can go down my road in 3rd gear without having to brake or give it much gas. I don't notice anything different about the CVT shifting that the experts mention. There are only 6 gears (unlike the Renegade, which has 9) so there is less shifting, which is nice. The MPG is about on par with the Suzuki at 25 mpg combined, but considering this has a larger engine, I'm okay with that. I need the extra power to get home most of the time. The car also feels very solid - nothing tinny about it. The only downside is the back seats. Although there is plenty of room back there, they just aren't that comfortable. Fortunately, I rarely have backseat passengers. Overall, if you're looking for a reasonably priced, dependable, and solid vehicle that'll provide good transportation, this car is definitely worth considering.

Absolutely great rebate on this vehicle. Made it affordable to own an SUV! Very stylish and easy to operate electronics. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable vehicle with a fantastic warranty. You can't go wrong with this one!
