1995 Dodge Dakota problems
The Dodge Dakota, known as the Ram Dakota for the final two years of production, is a mid-size pickup truck from Chrysler's Ram (formerly Dodge Truck) division. The first Dakota was introduced in late 1986 as a 1987 model. From its introduction through 2009, it was marketed under the Dodge brand, and for the final two years under the Ram brand.
The Dakota was sized above the compact Ford Ranger and Chevrolet S-10, but below the full-sized pickups such as Dodge's own Ram. It is a conventional design with body-on-frame construction and a leaf spring/live axle rear end. The Dakota was the first mid-size pickup with an optional V8 engine. For its entire production, the Dakota was built in Warren, Michigan.
The Dakota was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2000.

Common 1995 Dodge Dakota problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Dodge Dakota 1995, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:
- Coolant Loss and Engine Overheating:
- Owners have reported coolant loss leading to engine overheating, even in cool weather. Symptoms include antifreeze leaks, engine overheating, knocking sounds, and steam from the grille. Common causes of coolant leaks are worn gaskets around the thermostat housing, water pump, intake manifold, and timing cover. Repairs may be covered under the truck's warranty.
- Random Engine Shut-Offs:
- Some owners experienced their trucks randomly shutting off while driving or when the engine got hot. The vehicle would sometimes restart after cooling down. This issue was linked to an intermittent connection with the crank position sensor wire connector, affecting engine performance.
- Oil Leaks:
- Oil leaks are a common problem for 1995 Dodge Dakota models. Leaks typically occur around the valve cover, intake manifold, timing cover, distributor O-ring, and the rear main seal. Using fluorescent engine oil dye can help locate the source of the leak, and replacing the gasket is the recommended solution.
These issues highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt repairs to ensure the optimal performance and longevity of the Dodge Dakota 1995.

Your dad first owned the 3.9L V6 Dakota Sport and you went on family vacations and he used it for business. Your mom also drove it around to and from work (errands too) for years. The Dodge has been through a lot of travels! It now has 205,000 miles on it and is running wonderfully! Only normal fixes had to be done. It's a great truck. Now you own the truck and enjoy it a lot!
-
This truck has been a reliable companion, and the torque in the motor made driving it a lot of fun. I recently purchased a 2003 quad cab, but I've noticed that the 3.9 liter is not as torquey due to the added weight and larger tires. The 16 inch tires cause the motor to run at 250-350 less rpm, and I've found that the sweet spot in 4th gear is around 75 mph.
-
I was a bit hesitant to buy this truck since it's a '95 with 198K miles, but the 318 has been a real workhorse! I just hit 210K this weekend and I haven't had any issues beyond normal maintenance. I haul cars almost every weekend and the truck has been outstanding for my needs.
-
For me, this has been and continues to be an excellent vehicle. The interior room is great, and it has performed with only minimal maintenance. I would recommend it without any hesitation.
-
This is a great truck that has served me well! I purchased it with 120k miles and have taken good care of it with regular maintenance. It has been used for towing, commuting, traveling, and even rescuing my friends' trucks from snow banks and mud. Currently, my sister is borrowing it and she loves driving it more than she ever expected. Unfortunately, it is starting to show some rust, but overall it has been a reliable and solid vehicle. Since purchasing it, I have replaced the pitman arm, timing chain, water pump, alternator, heater blower, radio, windshield, brakes, shocks, exhaust, all fluids, plugs, wires, coil, and window motor. Thank you for considering this great truck!

This vehicle has been great to me, despite a few minor electrical issues. The drivetrain has held up well, even with some harsh driving, although I usually take it easy. This model comes with a 3.9L V6 engine, which provides plenty of power. Unless you plan to use it as a work truck, there's no need for the 5.2L. I've even towed other trucks out of ditches on muddy roads. There have been some minor oil leaks due to normal wear and tear on the engine seals. I wouldn't recommend a more recent or different model, such as a Ram. The Dakota is one of the best-built vehicles by Dodge and one of the better trucks overall. I highly recommend it for its design and operation.
Royal Herman 2024-02-21
I had to replace the V8 engine at 80,000 miles. Additionally, the speedometer, cruise control, and tailgate were malfunctioning, and there was rear end and back brake drag. Although the transmission had already been replaced, I ultimately decided to trade the truck, incurring a significant loss. I had a similar experience with my 1996 Dakota. Based on my personal experience, I cannot recommend Dodge or Chrysler vehicles and will not be purchasing them again in the future.
