The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.

The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."

The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.

As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.

The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

Common 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander sport problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, several common problems have been identified:

  1. Transmission Failure:
    • One of the most common issues reported is premature transmission failure. This can lead to significant issues with the vehicle's drivability and may require costly repairs or replacement.
  2. Failed Air Conditioning Pressure Switch:
    • Owners have experienced problems with the air conditioning system due to a failed pressure switch. When this component malfunctions, the air conditioning compressor may not engage, resulting in the system not cooling properly.
  3. Failed Fan Motor:
    • Another common problem is the failure of the fan motor. This can impact the vehicle's cooling system, leading to overheating and potential engine issues if not addressed promptly.
  4. CVT Automatic Transmission Slippage:
    • Some vehicles have reported issues with the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) slipping before reaching fifty thousand miles. If left unattended, this can escalate to complete transmission failure.
  5. Rapid Wear of Front Sway Bar and Links:
    • Rapid wear of the front sway bar and links has been noted, causing suspension rattling noises, especially on rough roads or over bumps. Replacing these worn components is necessary to resolve this issue.
  6. CV Boots Tearing:
    • The CV boots in some vehicles are prone to tearing over time, allowing dirt and water to enter and damage the CV joint. Replacing the damaged CV joint or the entire axle assembly is essential to prevent further issues.
  7. Premature AC Compressor Failure:
    • Premature failure of the AC compressor has been reported, resulting in the air conditioning system not blowing cold air. Replacing the damaged compressor and related parts is required to restore proper functionality.
  8. Exterior Paint Chipping:
    • Some owners have observed that the exterior paint on their vehicles tends to chip easily, affecting the aesthetics and potentially leading to rust if left untreated.
  9. TPMS Sensor Battery Drain:
    • The batteries inside the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) sensors are prone to losing their charge over time, causing the TPMS light to illuminate on the instrument panel. Replacing the sensors and programming them to the vehicle is necessary to address this issue.

These common problems with the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport highlight various areas of concern that owners have faced, ranging from transmission issues to AC system failures and suspension problems. Addressing these issues promptly through proper maintenance and repairs is crucial to ensure the vehicle's optimal performance and longevity.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-23
  • VIN: 4A4AP3AUXEE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I was on the freeway and all of the sudden the transmission stopped working and I was unable to get to the side of the road safely do to loss of power and traffic conditions. There was transmission warning light that came on and right after that when I pressed on the acceleration the engine would rev, but there was no reaction to the gears. This resulted in me being stuck in an active lane of traffic and nearly being hit several times. I called the police and informed them because I didn’t want to cause an accident but do to another accident I was stranded for 50 minutes in the active lane of traffic. Apparently this is a known issue with this transmission but the manufacturer is not responding and issued a recall like it needs to. Something like this could get someone seriously injured or killed! I’m lucky no one was injured in my situation but on a very busy freeway something like this could cause a huge pile up if a car all of the sudden is just stopped in the middle of the road. Who knows how many people could be hurt or die in a situation like that happening.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-04-22
  • VIN: JA4JZ4AXXEZ
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: THE REARVIEW CAMERA SYSTEM SUDDENLY QUIT SHOWING VIDEO WHEN I PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE. THE CAMERA ITSELF STILL WORKS AS I CAN GO INTO THE SETTINGS FOR BRIGHTNESS, COLOR, ETC., THE BACK UP SENSORS STILL BEEP WHEN I AM BACKING UP AND THE REVERSE LIGHTS STILL WORK AS WELL. FROM LOOKING AT THE MITSUBISHI FORUM (HTTPS://WWW.MITSUBISHI-FORUMS.COM/THREADS/REVERSE-CAMERA-NOT-COMING-ON.72338/#POST-360974) , APPARENTLY THIS IS AN ISSUE FOR MANY PEOPLE. ONE FORUM MEMBER STATES AN ETACS CODING ENTRY CALLED 'REAR_CMR_PRST' SAYS IT IS 'NOT PRESENT.' I FEEL THIS IS MOST DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE, PARTICULARLY WHEN BACKING OUT OF A PUBLIC PARKING SPOT. I REALIZE THIS IS A CONVENIENCE ITEM FOR MY YEAR OF VEHICLE (2014), BUT SINCE THE CAMERON GULBRANSEN KIDS TRANSPORTATION SAFETY ACT OF 2007 BECAME LAW AS OF MAY 1, 2018, THESE ITEMS ARE STANDARD EQUIPMENT ON ALL NEW VEHICLES. FROM READING THE FORUM, ANY REPAIRS ARE AT THE EXPENSE OF THE CONSUMER, AND MY LOCAL MITSUBISHI SHOPS HAVE NO IDEA OF WHAT IS WRONG AND HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THE PROBLEM. MANY IN THE FORUM MENTION 'VEHICLE SIGNAL CHECK' MENU, ETACS PROGRAMMING, CAN COMMUNICATIONS, CODING DATA, AND OTHER WIRING INFORMATION THE AVERAGE CONSUMER IS OBLIVIOUS OF. IF REARVIEW CAMERAS ARE REQUIRED EQUIPMENT DUE TO PASSAGE OF THE ABOVE LAW, SHOULDN'T THIS ISSUE BE A SAFETY RECALL FOR REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT OF THE DEFECT AT MANUFACTURER EXPENSE? BY THE WAY, THIS CAR HAS NEVER BEEN IN ANY ACCIDENT, HAD ANY DAMAGE DONE TO THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN WELL CARED FOR AND MAINTAINED.

  • Remedy: Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the seat belt lap end attachment fastener, free of charge. The recall began on December 1, 2014. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-714-372-6000. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-14-011.

Negative 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander sport car reviews

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you had a couple of requirements for your new car - a higher seating position and good MPG. It sounds like the Outlander Sport didn't quite meet your expectations in terms of performance and MPG. I can understand how that might be disappointing. Have you tried driving in different conditions or adjusting your driving habits to see if that improves the MPG? I hope this helps!

The car has several issues such as rattles, high idle, and an obnoxious chime that cannot be disabled. Additionally, I discovered that the car was damaged during transit, repainted, and the damage was not disclosed. When I contacted Mitsubishi about the body damage, they were unhelpful and did not disclose the cost of repairs or sanction the dealer for non-disclosure. It is disappointing that Mitsubishi did not take responsibility for the issue. However, it is important to note that this is my personal opinion and does not reflect the views of others.

I bought a used 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport in January 2017 with around 38,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, in May 2018, the alternator stopped working and I was stranded for hours. Thankfully, it was covered under warranty and I got it towed to the garage. Fast forward to June 2020, and the transmission has gone out with just over 100,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, it's no longer covered under warranty and the only options are a new one for around $9,000 or a used one, which is hard to find. It seems like many people are having this issue. Currently, I'm looking at over $4,500 out of pocket if I want to repair this vehicle. So, I would be cautious of reviews that claim this car can last 200,000 miles or more. However, I hope my experience can help others make an informed decision. Thank you for reading.

You owned a very nice SUV! With a roof rack, you could haul just about anything. It was also very dependable. In the 5 years that you owned it, you only had to purchase tires, rear brakes, and regular oil changes. Although the dealerships were few and far between, you managed to keep it in great condition. However, you recently traded it in for a different manufacturer because the repair shop you used was not exactly customer friendly. I hope your new car treats you well!

I would definitely recommend it! It's a great car...

Owned for 3 years now and completely trouble free. I just have the oil changed and tires rotated. The car looks great, is very reliable, and provides good value. The only downside is that the engine gets louder at about 2800 RPM. However, the transmission usually keeps it below this range, and you will only notice it during quicker accelerations.

Congratulations on your new RVR! It sounds like you made a great decision trading in your Chevy Cruze for it. The RVR has so many great features, like extra travel height, AWD capability, and impressive fuel economy. Plus, it's been a headache-free experience compared to your old car. The engine is super smooth and quiet, and the quick acceleration in sports mode is a nice touch. And who doesn't love heated seats, even in the base model? Overall, it sounds like you're really enjoying your RVR and all it has to offer!
