The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.

The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."

The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.

As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.

The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

Common 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander sport problems

The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is a compact crossover SUV that has received mixed reviews from owners. While it offers respectable fuel economy and a generous warranty, there are several common problems that have been reported by owners.

One of the most significant issues with the 2016 Outlander Sport is its lack of power, particularly with the base 2.0-liter engine. This engine can be loud during acceleration, which can be frustrating for drivers.

Another issue with the 2016 Outlander Sport is its interior materials, which can look and feel cheap. Some owners have reported that the ride quality can be jarring on bumpy roads, and that the car doesn't feel particularly sporty despite its name.

In addition to these issues, the 2016 Outlander Sport has also been reported to have problems with its automatic transmission. Some owners have reported hearing whining or rattling noises coming from the engine bay, and in some cases, a 'transmission overheating' warning may appear on the dash. The proposed fix for this issue is to replace the transmission altogether, which can be a significant expense.

The 2016 Outlander Sport has also been reported to have body paint problems. According to the reports by frustrated owners, the paint is very prone to chipping and scratches, indicating a poor paint job. This can be a significant issue for owners who are concerned about the appearance of their vehicle.

Finally, the 2016 Outlander Sport has been reported to have issues with its infotainment system. Some owners have reported that the system can be slow to respond, and that it can be difficult to use while driving. Additionally, some owners have reported that the system can freeze or crash, which can be a significant safety concern.

In summary, the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport has several common problems that have been reported by owners. These include a lack of power, slow transmission responses, cheap interior materials, jarring ride quality, automatic transmission failure, body paint problems, and issues with the infotainment system. While the Outlander Sport offers respectable fuel economy and a generous warranty, these issues may be significant enough to deter some potential buyers.

The impact actually broke the seats the passenger and I were sitting in. There were extensive injuries that happened because of this. The SUV was deemed a total loss because of the extensive damage done to the car. There were no warning messages, no recalls, etc. The SUV was inspected by a mechanic and insurance company and both said that the airbags should have gone off and the seatbelts should have locked based on the amount of damage to the SUV. I also took this SUV into the Mitsubishi dealership for all services/maintenance and nothing ever came up about any issues.

POWER TRAIN,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-02
  • VIN: JA4AD3A38GZ
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: This vehicle is dangerous and going to kill someone. I owned it 4 months and had to have it taken to 3 different dealerships 7 times in 6 weeks because it would die without warning while driving. It left me stranded in 2 different states and I was told every time nothing could be found as to why this would happen. However, there were several codes that came up that lead me and my mechanic to believe the transmission was failing. The dealerships did not want to fix it under my warranty so they told me nothing was wrong. I believe they also did this so that when I inevitably got them to take it back, they would have no paper trail of horrific problems to have to disclose when reselling it. I had to fight to get a new car and I was told this car would be sold wholesale and the issues would be disclosed. They were not. The dealer who bought it had no idea. Upon reaching out to them, they have made the decision to return it to the wholesale company they got it from. If nothing can be done from the NHTSA side, I will continue to track the vin and tell everyone what has occurred until that car is disposed of. Please, I implore you to get ahold of this car and scrap it completely. Someone will die if this car continues being sold as nothing was fixed and nothing was disclosed about the issues with it. Get this car off the streets. It is not safe to drive.

Negative 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander sport car reviews

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you mentioned your experience with the Outlander Sport from 2015. While you initially gave it high marks, it seems that your opinion has changed after driving it every day. I understand that there are many alternatives to choose from, and it's important to find the right fit for you. I appreciate your honesty about your experience with Mitsubishi and their products in the US market. Thank you for sharing your pros and cons, including the great warranty. Have a great day!

The car's resale value is not great, unfortunately. Despite having only 15500 miles, it is not even worth $11G's. There have been a few issues, such as a loose A-post cover, a transmission recall for programming, a loose driver door window, and some issues with the ESP. Getting into the back seat can be a bit tight, but I do appreciate the rear parking sensors. The original tires were not good in the snow, but after putting on Goodyear Assurances, the car handles much better. One issue I have noticed is that there is frost build-up on the interior post after driving, which can be a hassle to scrape off if in a hurry. I purchased this car after Suzuki left the US, and traded it in from a Grand Vitara. I am hoping to ride out the resale devalue until I can trade up. I must say, the dealer maintenance has been great!

Positive 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander sport car reviews

Hey there! If you're looking for a great deal, this is definitely it! Don't worry about what the experts say, this car is easy to maintain, good on gas, and drives great in the snow. While it may have a slower acceleration, if you drive it in stick mode, it really moves! So why not check it out?

I'm glad to hear that you have had no problems with your vehicle since you purchased it in December 2014. It's great to know that the recall has made it even better than before. I see that you have recently purchased a Curtis hitch mount receiver and cargo carrier, which is a great addition to your vehicle. It's unfortunate that some people have given it low ratings, but I agree with you that it's a great vehicle at a good price. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

I recently picked up my brand-new 2015 Outlander GT Sport with the 2.4 L engine and paddle shifters. I must say, the power this vehicle has for an all-wheel-drive model is truly amazing. I highly recommend stopping by your local dealer to try it out for yourself. The difference from the original vehicles with the small, underpowered 2.0 motor is night and day. I can't stop smiling every time I get behind the wheel. The only downside is that the rear window visibility in the rearview mirror is somewhat limited due to the small rear hatch window.

The Outlander Sport/RVR/ASX is an amazing small SUV that is available worldwide. It has excellent all-around quality because it is built at their flagship factory/R&D center. This SUV has a unique feel compared to the competition, which makes it stand out. It is an authentic Japanese SUV built mainly for Asia and Russia, as demonstrated by the voice-activated system speaking in Japanese and the driver information screen originally showing Japanese or Russian before being reset. I paid less for a new Outlander Sport than I paid for a car in 2000, which is incredible. The only downside is that it is only 96% made in Japan, while the 2018 Outlander Sport is 99% made in Japan, and the 2017 Outlander V6 is 100% made in Japan. Overall, this is the best vehicle for quality and reliability that I have ever owned.

We were cruising through a car lot and said 'what's that?!' It looked like something we couldn't afford but we were wrong. So far, we've really enjoyed this car. It's fun to drive and great in the snow. Although the interior is very basic and the cargo space is limited, it still offers great value. Overall, we highly recommend it!
