Lincoln Continental problems

The Lincoln Continental is a series of mid-sized and full-sized luxury cars produced between 1939 and 2020 by Lincoln, a division of the American automaker Ford Motor Company. The model line was introduced following the construction of a personal vehicle for Edsel Ford, who commissioned a coachbuilt 1939 Lincoln-Zephyr convertible, developed as a vacation vehicle to attract potential Lincoln buyers. In what would give the model line its name, the exterior was given European "continental" styling elements, including a rear-mounted spare tire.

In production for over 55 years across nine different decades, Lincoln has produced ten generations of the Continental. Within the Lincoln model line, the Continental has served several roles ranging from its flagship to its base-trim sedan. From 1961 to 1976, Lincoln sold the Continental as its exclusive model line. The model line has also gone on hiatus three times. From 1949 to 1955, the nameplate was briefly retired. In 1981, the Continental was renamed the Lincoln Town Car to accommodate the 1982 seventh-generation Continental. After 2002, the Continental was retired, largely replaced by the Lincoln MKS in 2009; in 2017, the tenth-generation Continental replaced the MKS.

As part of its entry into full-scale production, the first-generation Continental was the progenitor of an entirely new automotive segment, the personal luxury car. Following World War II, the segment evolved into coupes and convertibles larger than sports cars and grand touring cars with an emphasis on features, styling, and comfort over performance and handling. From 1956 to 1957, the Continental nameplate was the namesake of the short-lived Continental Division, marketing the 1956–1957 Continental Mark II as the worldwide flagship of Ford Motor Company; as a second successor, Ford introduced the Continental Mark series in 1969, produced over six generations to 1998.

Along with the creation of the personal luxury car segment, the Lincoln Continental marked the zenith of several designs in American automotive history. The Continental is the final American vehicle line with a factory-produced V12 engine (1948), the final four-door convertible (1967), and the final model line to undergo downsizing (for the 1980 model year).

American production of the Continental and MKZ, its only two sedans, ended in 2020 thereby making Lincoln a crossover/SUV-only brand in the USA. After it was discontinued in Lincoln's home market, Ford indicated that it planned to move Continental production to China.

Lincoln Continental 2018
  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-22
  • Date Complaint: 2023-12-22
  • VIN: 1LN6L9RP4J5
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: When rotating tires 12/22/2023, upon removal of the right front tire, it was discovered that the inner sidewall had split open about midway between the tread and the wheel rim, for a distance of about one foot. There was no advance warning of this, and no warnings or messages displayed on the vehicle prior. As this was the first wheel removed, I am not sure what the condition of the other tires may be. As all tires are original equipment to the car, which is 4.5 years old and has approximately 18,000 miles on the odometer, I suspect that all tires will likely need to be replaced as they are all the same date code and DOT number. I have tried to upload pictures, but the webpage doesn't let me.

  • Date Complaint: 2023-12-16
  • VIN: 1LN6L9SK5H5

  • Summary: Drivers door latch will NOT lock/engage after opening door.
Lincoln Continental 2019
  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-28
  • Date Complaint: 2023-10-28
  • VIN: 1LN6L9NP9K5
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
  • Summary: Lightly leaned on door when it was shutting, making it so it wouldn't shut all the way, soft close system engaged jamming the door and making it impossible without destroying the door/motor to open even with the emergency release latch in the map compartment of my vehicle (driver side under the electronic release button) the door eventually threw up an error letting me know the door was malfunctioning and was ajar when it wasn't. I had to climb over to the passenger seat to get out and after trying to figure out a way to release the door with about 5 minutes of effort the door finally released by holding the open button and pulling constantly at the cost of the soft close motor and a constant error message on screen with a yellow wrench on the dash. No other info on other faults are known as of yet. I have not been able to bring it to a dealer as of yet but I will update this as soon as I do I can probably reproduce it on another door but I fear doing so will have a chance to never being able to open the door again. This can be a huge issue in the event of an emergency where you need to spend extra time to break the window or crawl out and if the car lacks power with doors lock NO DOOR can be opened as the emergency release latch only works on the drivers door.

This car has had some issues, but I have taken care of them by replacing the axils twice, exchanging air ride for good struts and shocks, replacing the radiator, water pump, and AC compressor, and fixing the poor heat. I have also replaced the computer and fixed the windows, doors, locks, and power seat buttons numerous times. Although the security system goes off at will and the power antenna doesn't work, I have taken care of the brakes and the airbag warning light always flashing. While the radio doesn't work, I have done my best to maintain the car. I believe that with proper care, this car can still be a reliable mode of transportation.

You have a nice car there! I noticed that you've had to replace the air shock and air pump, head gasket, air conditioning, and brake booster. That can be quite a bit of work, but it's great that you're taking care of it. Keep up the good work!

As an imports mechanic, I'm used to fixing or driving Lexuses, Acuras, and other high-end cars. I recently bought this car because of its affordable price of $1,100, even though the front struts were missing and the previous owner couldn't afford to fix them. After spending about $800 to fix the struts, I drove the car for 100 miles before the coolant started leaking like crazy. Unfortunately, the oil is also starting to leak, and the switch for the windshield washer fluid shorted out. While I don't plan on keeping this car any longer due to the high maintenance costs, I must say that it provides a great ride for long trips or just cruising around the city. The insulation is also top-notch.

The car was delivered new with 97 miles on 12/29/18. Unfortunately, on 1/7/19, it wouldn't start due to a defective battery cell, which was promptly replaced. However, on 1/27/19, it wouldn't start again, and the message 'system shut down to protect battery' appeared. The car was taken to the shop on 1/31, but it still wouldn't start. Since then, I have been told that 'Continentals have to be run less than every 3 days, as modules talk to one another, draining battery'. I find this hard to believe. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

I am thoroughly impressed with the performance of this vehicle. The 2.7L 6-cylinder turbo engine has a lot of power and acceleration is smooth and responsive. The handling is exactly what I would expect from a luxury car. The interior is spacious, quiet, and comfortable, with 30-way seats that are perfect for long drives. I also appreciate the smart link feature, which allows me to control my vehicle with my iPhone. Overall, this is a fantastic car that I have enjoyed owning for eleven months and counting!

I must say, this is the sixteenth Lincoln I have owned, and I have quite the history with them. My first was a three-year-old 1973 Continental Town Car, which I bought when I was just eighteen years old. Since then, I have owned a variety of Continentals, a Mark VIII, multiple Town Cars, a couple of Navigators, a Mark LT pickup, and an MKT. Half of them were purchased new, and the rest were used. Recently, we bought this Certified Pre-Owned car, and I must say, the white platinum metallic tri-coat with cappuccino interior is a lovely combination. As I am now in my early sixties, I find myself wishing that cars weren't so technical, but I understand that it's a sign of the times, and manufacturers have to keep up in order to survive. One of the main reasons we chose this car was for its rear seat package, as our son and daughter-in-law reside with us to help care for my wife. Whoever is riding in the back deserves just as much comfort as those in the front, and the massage feature in both the front and rear seats is phenomenal. The Revel sound system is also magnificent. We purchased it at a dealership about a hundred miles from home, and our first drive was a pretty good test of its comfort. I personally find the ride, in comfort mode, to be similar to my last Town Car (2008) and better than my MKT (2012) or most recent Navigator (2016). The front fascia reminds me of the 2011 Jaguar XJL Supercharged we used to have, but the ride is considerably smoother. I sincerely hope that it will be more reliable than my previous non-American vehicles, such as the BMW I owned years ago and the Jaguar we used to have.Admittedly, we haven't had the car long enough yet to know how it's going to go but early indications are that we will be quite satisfied with it. I cannot think of anything else I could have purchased at the same price point that would have rivaled it for comfort and style. After having owned this Continental for one year, I can only say that I like it just as much. Its performance has been flawless and I continue to be impressed with just how much car it really is. My primary concern is its depreciation factor due to sedans falling 'out of favor' with consumers. Of course, that was a factor in the affordable price I paid for it last year but then Lincoln pulled the plug on Continental and MKZ and worsened the prospects. The current chip shortage, leading to soaring used car prices, has currently raised the average trade-in price on my car to a few thousand dollars more than I paid for it so we're considering whether to profit while we can or commit to just keeping it forever. We tried out a new Lincoln Corsair yesterday and were actually impressed. Entry/egress, if anything, is better for my wife than with the Continental. If I can find a new, carried-over 2020 Corsair at clearance pricing and either sell or trade my Continental while its value is up, we may take advantage of the situation... but that is no reflection on the Continental. It continues to serve us well but I've come to believe a small crossover like Corsair is probably the better choice financially. We did end up trading our Continental for a new Lincoln Corsair last May. The Continental served us well and I have absolutely nothing bad to say about it. Due to pandemic-related increases in the used car values, I actually received more for it on trade-in than I paid for it a year earlier, so it essentially paid for me to drive it.Although I no longer own my Continental, I highly recommend it! You won't regret it!

The heads up display is definitely the best feature of the car. Equipping it with winter tires turns the car into a mountain goat on slick winter roads. Although there are a few minor annoyances such as cabin squeaks/rattles that should never exist in a car this expensive, and the absence of an engine compartment light (seriously Ford...that’s a big oops), checking the transmission fluid level is also very difficult in this car. In my opinion, the car should have digital options to monitor engine temp/battery condition. After 20,000 Kms, the engine and tranny have been very strong with no issues. The only issue I encountered was a driver side e-latch failure which was fixed within 2 business days (the reliability long term of those e-latches is worth watching I might add).

This car rides great! I really enjoyed it, especially compared to my other cars. However, I do wish they would stop using those air control shocks and just put a good pair of Monroe shocks instead. I understand that the car company may lose money on maintenance repairs, but paying two thousand for front and rear shock replacement is a rip off.

This has been a great car for the past 5 years! Repairs have been minimal, such as the heater core that went when we first bought it, but it only cost $600 to fix. The mileage is 130,000, but we still like the size and comfort. Surprisingly, the gas mileage compares to a much smaller and lighter vehicle, as we get 22mpg around town and have even gotten as high as 30mpg on the highway!
