The Lincoln Continental is a series of mid-sized and full-sized luxury cars produced between 1939 and 2020 by Lincoln, a division of the American automaker Ford Motor Company. In 1981, the Continental was renamed the Lincoln Town Car to accommodate the 1982 seventh-generation Continental. After 2002, the Continental was retired, largely replaced by the Lincoln MKS in 2009; in 2017, the tenth-generation Continental replaced the MKS.
As part of its entry into full-scale production, the first-generation Continental was the progenitor of an entirely new automotive segment, the personal luxury car. Following World War II, the segment evolved into coupes and convertibles larger than sports cars and grand touring cars with an emphasis on features, styling, and comfort over performance and handling. From 1956 to 1957, the Continental nameplate was the namesake of the short-lived Continental Division, marketing the 1956–1957 Continental Mark II as the worldwide flagship of Ford Motor Company; as a second successor, Ford introduced the Continental Mark series in 1969, produced over six generations to 1998.
Along with the creation of the personal luxury car segment, the Lincoln Continental marked the zenith of several designs in American automotive history. The Continental is the final American vehicle line with a factory-produced V12 engine (1948), the final four-door convertible (1967), and the final model line to undergo downsizing (for the 1980 model year).
American production of the Continental and MKZ, its only two sedans, ended in 2020 thereby making Lincoln a crossover/SUV-only brand in the USA. After it was discontinued in Lincoln's home market, Ford indicated that it planned to move Continental production to China.

THE HALOGEN BULBS USED ARE QUITE HOT. THIS IS A KNOWN FACT. ADD IN THE SHORT HEIGHT OF THE HOUSING, AND YOU HAVE A REAL PROBLEM. ALSO, INSIDE THE LOW BEAM HOUSING, THERE IS A DIFFUSER, WHICH IS USED TO CUT DOWN THE DIRECT LIGHT FROM THE BULB, AND PRODUCE A SLIGHTLY LOWER INTENSITY BEAM. ALL OF THESE "FEATURES" OF THE ASSEMBLY CONTRIBUTE TO GENERATING SO MUCH TRAPPED HEAT FROM THE BULB, THE TOP SIDE OF THE REFLECTOR MATERIAL IS BURNED AWAY. THIS REDUCES THE REFLECTIVE QUALITIES OF THE REFLECTOR, OF COURSE, BUT IT ALSO LEAVES A BLACK AND YELLOW CHARRED AREA WHICH ACTUALLY ABSORBS SOME OF THE LIGHT. NOT ONLY IS THERE LESS LIGHT BEING REFLECTED FROM THE TOP (AND THIS IS IMPORTANT IN THE DESIGN OF THE LIGHT ITSELF), THERE IS LESS LIGHT IN GENERAL DUE TO THE DARKENED SPOT! THE PROBLEM IS SO SEVERE THAT I BELIEVE, GIVEN ENOUGH TIME, THE ASSEMBLY ITSELF WILL ACTUALLY MELT AWAY. THERE IS SIMPLY NO WHERE FOR THE HEAT TO GO, EXCEPT UP. NOW COUPLE THESE PROBLEMS WITH THE FACT THAT THE PLASTIC CLEAR LENS TENDS TO NOT ONLY YELLOW WITH AGE (DUE TO CLEANING PROBLEMS AND ULTRAVIOLET EXPOSURE) BUT ALSO START TO HAVE HUNDREDS OF TINY STRESS CRACKS IN THE LENS ITSELF. I must admit, I gave it a 4 rating for subjective factors, otherwise I would have given it a 3. However, my particular car had some odd electrical/sensory issues off the bat, which was a bit disappointing. Occasionally, when I drive it, the car starts beeping, warning me about problems that apparently don't exist. My dad found the noise box that causes it to beep and told me to take it out, but it's so rare that I haven't done that yet. My second biggest gripe with the car is the cupholders. They are quite shallow and not very practical. However, I found a fix for that lunacy by taking the plastic sheath out and flipping it upside down. Now I do use it. Overall, it's an honest car that will get you to point B. It has some character flaws, but that makes me love it even more. It has the best powered seat adjustment, many levels of windshield wiper speed, and a good, rugged feel. It was a luxury car, but it's not wimp luxury. It has great air settings and adjustors, which may take some time to learn, but it's worth it. I haven't had any engine problems yet, and the trunk is excellent, seemingly endless. I love the character of this car, and I don't care how anyone else feels about it. Although I'm ready to get an older Lincoln with suicide doors at some point, I'm not selling this one.

I have owned four Continentals, two of which were of this bodystyle, and I can confidently say that they have all been reliable and high-quality vehicles. Unfortunately, I hit a deer a week before my son's wedding and had to quickly find a replacement car, which led me to purchase this particular one. Although it initially had a fuel problem that required the replacement of the fuel regulator, I was able to resolve the issue and get the car running smoothly again. Additionally, I encountered an issue with the transmission after hitting a rock on a dirt road, but I do not attribute this to any fault of Ford's. To improve the car's suspension, I replaced the stock parts with aftermarket coil struts, which was a simple and affordable fix that greatly improved the car's ride quality. Overall, I am confident in the Continental's performance and would recommend it to others.

I had a 91 and a 93--both used. I replaced all 4 struts on the 91 at $400 each. The head gaskets went on the 93 at 77000 miles...I found this was common because they bored the heads to get more power. It's unfortunate that Ford refuses to admit the design flaw. However, I must say that you will find no better ride or driving pleasure for long trips and 24 mph. If you're considering buying a newer model, keep in mind that the price may be too steep!

The overhead gasket was replaced for $2000, and the drive train trans-axle had some issues with a cracked aluminum piston and burned clutches, which cost $1900 to fix. I bought my executive (Black-Tan) back in 2001 when it had 123,000 miles on it. It was a great looking car both inside and out, with a roomy interior and lots of trunk space. The car was well lit up in the interior and the dash was easily accessible and legible. The headlamp appearance was similar to the crown vic, which made other drivers think I was a cop - too funny! However, I eventually had to sell it due to extensive electrical and pricey suspension problems. Unfortunately, this seems to be a common issue among other Continental owners as well. It's such a shame because it's such a nice looking car, but the poor engineering on Lincoln's part is a real letdown. Hopefully, Lincoln will get their suspensions right soon!
