1995 Lincoln Continental problems

The Lincoln Continental is a series of mid-sized and full-sized luxury cars produced between 1939 and 2020 by Lincoln, a division of the American automaker Ford Motor Company. The model line was introduced following the construction of a personal vehicle for Edsel Ford, who commissioned a coachbuilt 1939 Lincoln-Zephyr convertible, developed as a vacation vehicle to attract potential Lincoln buyers. In what would give the model line its name, the exterior was given European "continental" styling elements, including a rear-mounted spare tire.

In production for over 55 years across nine different decades, Lincoln has produced ten generations of the Continental. Within the Lincoln model line, the Continental has served several roles ranging from its flagship to its base-trim sedan. From 1961 to 1976, Lincoln sold the Continental as its exclusive model line. The model line has also gone on hiatus three times. From 1949 to 1955, the nameplate was briefly retired. In 1981, the Continental was renamed the Lincoln Town Car to accommodate the 1982 seventh-generation Continental. After 2002, the Continental was retired, largely replaced by the Lincoln MKS in 2009; in 2017, the tenth-generation Continental replaced the MKS.

As part of its entry into full-scale production, the first-generation Continental was the progenitor of an entirely new automotive segment, the personal luxury car. Following World War II, the segment evolved into coupes and convertibles larger than sports cars and grand touring cars with an emphasis on features, styling, and comfort over performance and handling. From 1956 to 1957, the Continental nameplate was the namesake of the short-lived Continental Division, marketing the 1956–1957 Continental Mark II as the worldwide flagship of Ford Motor Company; as a second successor, Ford introduced the Continental Mark series in 1969, produced over six generations to 1998.

Along with the creation of the personal luxury car segment, the Lincoln Continental marked the zenith of several designs in American automotive history. The Continental is the final American vehicle line with a factory-produced V12 engine (1948), the final four-door convertible (1967), and the final model line to undergo downsizing (for the 1980 model year).

American production of the Continental and MKZ, its only two sedans, ended in 2020 thereby making Lincoln a crossover/SUV-only brand in the USA. After it was discontinued in Lincoln's home market, Ford indicated that it planned to move Continental production to China.

Common 1995 Lincoln Continental problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 1995 Lincoln Continental, several common problems have been identified:

  • Electrical Problems: Another prevalent complaint involves electrical issues, where the car loses all power when attempting to start it. This can manifest as a complete loss of electrical functions, including the starter, dash lights, and other components. Troubleshooting electrical problems can be challenging and may require professional assistance to identify and rectify the underlying issue.
  • Cooling Fan Failure: The electric cooling fan is highlighted as a common failure in the 1995 Lincoln Continental, particularly affecting models from 1995 to 1997. This issue can lead to overheating problems, impacting the engine's performance and potentially causing damage. Regular maintenance and prompt repairs are essential to prevent overheating and maintain the vehicle's reliability.
  • Intake Manifold Concerns: In later models, specifically from 1996 onwards, there have been complaints related to the plastic intake manifold. This component is prone to failure and may require replacement with an updated version featuring aluminum crossovers. Addressing intake manifold issues promptly is crucial to prevent engine performance issues and potential damage.

These common problems with the 1995 Lincoln Continental can significantly impact the vehicle's reliability, performance, and overall driving experience. Owners facing these issues are advised to seek professional assistance to accurately diagnose and address the root causes, ensuring the longevity and optimal functioning of their vehicles.

  • Summary: I BOUGHT THE CAR ON 08/28/2010 AND ONLY DROVE IT THAT DAY. SINCE IT WAS A SATURDAY AND THEY CLOSED EARLY, I HAD TO WAIT UNTIL MONDAY TO CONTACT THEM. ON MONDAY, A REP FROM THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT THEY SOLD THE CAR TO ME FROM SOMEONE WHO DIDN'T HAVE A DEALERSHIP OR TITLE FOR THE CAR AND HE WAS USING THEIR DEALERSHIP TO SELL AND TO RETRIEVE THE TITLE ONCE THE SELL WAS FINAL. THE CAR WAS OK WHEN I LEFT THE DEALERSHIP, BUT AFTER A COUPLE HOURS IT DIED ON ME WHILE I WAS DRIVING ALMOST CAUSING A ACCIDENT. ON THE DASH IT KEEP SAYING, "CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM". I KNOW A LIL ABOUT CARS AND I REALLY NEED THE TRANSPORTATION BECAUSE I'M A COLLEGE STUDENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MILWAUKEE, I DECIDED TO TRY TO GET IT FIXED TO MY KNOWLEDGE, BUT IT SEEMS AS IF IT'S SOMETHING MORE TO THIS "LEMON" AUCTION AUTO SOLD ME. TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-05-12
  • VIN: 1LNLM97VXSY
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: MY LEFT FRONT TIRE EXPLODED WITHOUT WARNING AT APPROX 69 MPH ON I-85. THE TIRE HAD PROPER AIR PRESSURE AND NOTHING WAS RUN OVER TO MAKE A PUNCTURE. I THINK THE TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE BODY DUE TO POOR ADHESION TO THE STEEL CORD AND THEN THE BODY EXPLODED WITHIN A REVOLUTION OR 2. I BASE THIS ON THE SOUND AND THE FACT THAT BARE TIRE CORD IS SHOWING ON THE CARCASS. MICHELIN REFUSED TO OFFER ANYTHING MORE THAN CREDIT FOR TREADWEAR, WHICH WAS ABOUT 40% (60% LEFT). I ESTIMATE THE TIRE AGE AT 2 TO 3 YEARS, BUT CANNOT FIND A RECEIPT. THE TIRE WAS TOO DAMAGED TO FIND A SERIAL NUMBER. SOME DAMAGE OCCURRED DURING APPROX 0.2 MILE REQUIRED FOR CHANGING LANES AND MOVING OFF THE EXPRESSWAY (RUSH HOUR). THE LEFT FRONT FENDER, WHEEL WELL (PLASTIC), AND WHEEL WERE REPLACED IN ADDITION TO THE TIRE AND AN ALIGNMENT. TOTAL COST ABOUT $1550. THE TIRE WAS A MICHELIN HARMONY 225R60X16. THE CAR ALSO HAD TO BE TOWED, DUE TO A MISSING KEY TO A LUGNUT ON EACH WHEEL. *TR

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-07-14
  • VIN: 1LNLM97V085
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: DT: THE CONTACT OWNS A 1995 LINCOLN CONTINENTAL. RECEIVED NHTSA CAMPAIGN RECALL 98V323000. VEHICLE MANIFESTED THE SAME PROBLEM AS LISTED IN THE RECALL CONCERNING REAR LOWER SUB FRAME MOUNT PLATE NUT THAT COULD EXPERIENCE STRESS CORROSION CRACKING IF SUBJECTED TO LONG TERM EXPOSURE TO ROAD SALTS. THIS CAN RESULT IN FRACTURE AND LOSS OF THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE SUBFRAME MOUNT ATTACHMENT. DETACHMENT OF THE BODY MOUNTS AT THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUB FRAME WHICH SUPPORTS THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION, ALLOWS THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME TO DROP. IF BOTH REAR CORNERS DROP STEERING WOULD BECOME SUDDENLY VERY DIFFICULT, AFFECTING VEHICLE'S CONTROL AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH. THIS RECALL DID NOT INCLUDE THE YEAR O VEHICLE BUT SHE HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM. *AK *TT

  • Components: INTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: JANUARY 10TH THE 'DOOR AJAR' SENSOR CAME ON AND THE INTERIOR LIGHTS WERE ON. I CHECKED ALL 4 DOORS, THEY WERE ALL CLOSED AND THE LIGHTS REMAINED ON. I THEN PUSHED THE 'RESET' BUTTON FOR THE SENSOR AND THE LIGHTS THEN WOULD GO OFF FOR A BRIEF TIME AND COME BACK ON. THEN, TODAY JANUARY 11TH THE SAME THING OCCURRED BUT AFTER THE CAR WAS TURNED OFF FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS THE PROBLEM INCREASED. I STARTED THE CAR, THE 'DOOR AJAR' SENSOR CAME ON ALONG WITH THE LIGHTS. AGAIN THE DOORS WERE CHECKED, THEY WERE ALL SHUT. AS I STARTED TO DRIVE THE LIGHTS WENT OFF, THEN WHEN I CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE LIGHTS WOULD TURN ON, AND WHEN I PUSHED THE GAS THE LIGHTS FADED AWAY AND TURNED OFF. WHEN I TURNED MY CAR OFF AND LOCKED THE DOORS THE LIGHTS STAYED ON FOR OVER 10-15 MINUTES. I'VE HAD NUMEROUS PEOPLE LOOK AT IT, AND THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT COULD HAVE CAUSED IT. BUT THERE BEING A SHORT OR TOUCHING WIRES. I HAVE NOT YET DONE ANYTHING TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. Negative 1995 Lincoln Continental car reviews

  1. Fredrick Olson 2024-02-13

I've been driving this dealer car for a week now. I gave up my Continentals to have children, so I was a bit hesitant at first, but I must say, I'm loving it! This car has 139k miles on it, but it still feels unreal to drive. The outside may not look like a Continental to me, but the inside is awesome. The dash is laser and beautiful, and the seats are comfortable and nicely trimmed. This Lincoln is beginning to steal my heart like they did years ago. The heater is the best, and the handling is really good. The power is good too, and the mileage is okay for a Lincoln. It drives like a big car but is actually a small car. The only thing that would make it better is heated seats and a sunroof. It's kind of sad that there's no continental kit, but you know it's a Lincoln when you drive it.

Positive 1995 Lincoln Continental car reviews

  1. Demond Tillman 2024-11-29

This car has 75000 miles and has received regular oil changes. Approximately 9 months ago, the electric module was replaced at Babbits Lincoln dealer in Flagstaff. There was one minor rear-end accident where the car backed into a truck, but the cost of repair was only $500. It is fully loaded, including a telephone, sunroof, leather top, wheel disks, and has new Michelin tires on the front and recently replaced front brakes.

  2. Toni Wintheiser 2024-09-15

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that everything is looking good, except for the air suspension problems. Let's work together to find a solution!

  3. Shayne Heaney 2024-08-24

Bought at 78K miles. 25MPG. 115K now. You'll be happy to know that I've never had it in the shop except for oil changes. I even changed the brake pads myself, which was very easy. It's a great ride with awesome power that will definitely turn heads with its cream color.

  4. Myron Watsica 2024-07-07

This car is great on the road and has a nice appearance that catches the eye. It averages 27 mpg on the road at 70 mph and 22 overall. The car has been reliable with minimal repairs needed, no oil burning, and a smooth transmission. Although I am not a fan of the air suspension, this car has still been a good investment. Overall, this car is a great choice for those seeking a reliable and stylish vehicle.

  5. Mitchel Block 2024-05-16

I received this car as a Christmas present and I must say, the design is great and the ride is smooth. However, it does require 93 octane fuel which can be a bit pricey in today's market. Unfortunately, the ride control system has failed and it's not as comfortable as it used to be. I'm a bit worried about the cost of repairs, but I still want to make sure it's in good working condition. Since I mainly use it for commuting, I don't plan on putting too many miles on it. Overall, it's a comfortable car but I'm not sure if it's worth the investment at this point. I'll be doing some research to see what I can do to fix the ride control and calibrations.
