The Lincoln Continental is a series of mid-sized and full-sized luxury cars produced between 1939 and 2020 by Lincoln, a division of the American automaker Ford Motor Company. The model line was introduced following the construction of a personal vehicle for Edsel Ford, who commissioned a coachbuilt 1939 Lincoln-Zephyr convertible, developed as a vacation vehicle to attract potential Lincoln buyers. In what would give the model line its name, the exterior was given European "continental" styling elements, including a rear-mounted spare tire.

In production for over 55 years across nine different decades, Lincoln has produced ten generations of the Continental. Within the Lincoln model line, the Continental has served several roles ranging from its flagship to its base-trim sedan. From 1961 to 1976, Lincoln sold the Continental as its exclusive model line. The model line has also gone on hiatus three times. From 1949 to 1955, the nameplate was briefly retired. In 1981, the Continental was renamed the Lincoln Town Car to accommodate the 1982 seventh-generation Continental. After 2002, the Continental was retired, largely replaced by the Lincoln MKS in 2009; in 2017, the tenth-generation Continental replaced the MKS.

As part of its entry into full-scale production, the first-generation Continental was the progenitor of an entirely new automotive segment, the personal luxury car. Following World War II, the segment evolved into coupes and convertibles larger than sports cars and grand touring cars with an emphasis on features, styling, and comfort over performance and handling. From 1956 to 1957, the Continental nameplate was the namesake of the short-lived Continental Division, marketing the 1956–1957 Continental Mark II as the worldwide flagship of Ford Motor Company; as a second successor, Ford introduced the Continental Mark series in 1969, produced over six generations to 1998.

Along with the creation of the personal luxury car segment, the Lincoln Continental marked the zenith of several designs in American automotive history. The Continental is the final American vehicle line with a factory-produced V12 engine (1948), the final four-door convertible (1967), and the final model line to undergo downsizing (for the 1980 model year).

American production of the Continental and MKZ, its only two sedans, ended in 2020 thereby making Lincoln a crossover/SUV-only brand in the USA. After it was discontinued in Lincoln's home market, Ford indicated that it planned to move Continental production to China.

Common 2017 Lincoln Continental problems

The 2017 Lincoln Continental has several common problems reported by owners, which range from powertrain issues to steering defects and structural problems.

Powertrain issues are rare but have been reported by some users. The sedan has been known to jerk while shifting gears, which can progress to major powertrain concerns. Fixing powertrain issues can be both time-consuming and expensive.

Steering malfunctions have also been reported by a few users. This causes the locking of the steering wheel, which can lead to a loss of steering ability. This compromises vehicle control, increasing the chances of a crash.

Structural problems are also a concern with the 2017 Lincoln Continental. The most common complaints are related to door malfunctions. The sedan is prone to opening doors under driving conditions, which increases the risk of injury or a crash and also acts as a road hazard. Seat malfunctions, specifically heated seat malfunctions, have also been reported. This can result in uncontrolled heating of the seat support, which can cause serious burn injuries to the occupants and increases the risk of a fire.

The unavailability of recalled parts has been a known issue with Lincoln. Users report dealerships not being able to procure the recalled parts, which leads to delayed vehicle recalls, rendering the customers without a vehicle.

The 2017 Lincoln Continental has had three recalls. The first recall is for the vehicle doors, which may open while driving. The second recall is for the frontal airbags, which may not deploy properly. The third recall is for incorrect headlight lamps, which can reduce turn signal visibility to other drivers and pedestrians, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Despite these issues, the 2017 Lincoln Continental is still a reliable and practical choice for a daily city commuter. It offers an impressive sedan cabin with premium interiors and comfort and keeps up with occasional long-distance touring. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider them before making a purchase.

Negative 2017 Lincoln Continental car reviews

  1. Tyree Wisozk 2024-11-14

The 2017 Lincoln Continental Reserve that I purchased used with 25k miles initially proved to be an excellent car. However, I encountered an issue where I couldn't open my door, even after attempting to enter from the passenger side. Additionally, I noticed moisture in my reverse light and the parking light on the rear deck lid. Despite having an extended Premium warranty from Lincoln, the dealership estimated the repair cost to be $2300, which unfortunately is not covered. As a result, I have decided to switch back to Japanese cars. It's been a pleasure owning the Reserve model 3.0 AWD, but it's time to move on.

  2. Fred Kshlerin 2024-11-06

The car handles like a sports car, which is great if you're into that kind of thing. However, if you're looking for a comfortable sedan, this might not be the best choice. The seats are comfortable and easy to adjust, and the heating/cooling controls and fan control are great. The car's controls take some time to learn, but once you get the hang of them, they're not too bad. The rearview mirrors and controls for the moon roof, shade, rear window shade, interior lights, and rear headrest are all located in the upper center and can be a bit tricky to find without looking. The car doesn't have a CD changer, but it does have a player where you can drop CDs. The panel lights can be dimmed, but it doesn't dim the center console screen, which you have to adjust through a menu system. The car gets about 20-25mpg with premium gas. Overall, it's a decent car, but it might not be for everyone. Also, it might take some time to get used to the unique If you want to use voice commands, it's important to say them precisely. You can find a list of the 26 climate control commands by saying 'List of Commands' and they will appear on the console. Personally, I find the automatic parking feature a bit too fast for my liking, so I prefer not to use it. However, the car is impressively quiet at highway speeds, even with the moon roof open. Maintenance is a breeze - just take the car in once a year or every 10,000 miles. I particularly like the self-closing doors and the great interior lighting. The instrument panel can be a bit frustrating at times, especially when trying to change between Trip 1 and Trip 2, or when checking tire pressure. However, the cruise control works nicely and I appreciate the ability to adjust the following distance. As a long-time Ford owner, I absolutely love the keypad on the side - it means I never have to carry my keys or fob with me.

Despite some initial issues, I am confident in my assessment that this car is not worth the investment. Even when set to the 'comfort' setting, the ride quality is subpar and reminiscent of a poorly designed sports car. Additionally, after nearly a year of ownership, the uncomfortable nature of the vehicle persists. The trunk lid has also been a recurring issue, failing to close automatically as advertised, requiring multiple trips to the dealership for repairs. As a result, I feel it is necessary to have the transmission checked as well.

I previously owned a 2014 Lincoln MKS and there are some major differences between that car and the Continental, especially when it comes to the front seat. Unfortunately, there is very little room in the Continental and I have to use two different auto settings for the seat - one for getting in and out and one for driving. The seats also retract very minimally when turning the car off. Additionally, the steering wheel does not move enough to the high side and the side of the front seat has broken off twice due to its configuration. When I adjust the seat to my driving position, I have to bend forward and down to see the sunroof controls on top. In comparison, the MKS had adjustable brake pedals, headlights that turned towards the direction you were turning, and heated and air-conditioned seats. When you turned off the car, the adjusted seats moved quite a bit up and down. Overall, the Continental left a lot to be desired. I regret not keeping the MKS and wish I still had it.

I leased my Reserve AWD in March 18 after driving Town Cars for 20 years. Although the Town Car is far superior in terms of overall ride and storage capacity, I have some positive thoughts about the Continental so far at 7000 miles: The 30 position massage seats are a great feature, although they can be somewhat complicated to operate. The MPG overall is 23-24 and 27 Hwy on a few trips, which is impressive. The 2.7 liter turbocharged engine offers good power, and the rear seat room is above average. The styling is nice, and there are lots of bells and whistles, although I don't know if I'll ever use them all. However, there are some downsides: The push button transmission can be slow to respond, and everything is computer/electrically controlled, including opening the doors. As someone who is old school, I don't care for this trend. The dash display option is unnecessarily complicated, and there is no option for a temperature gauge. The owner's manual is 3/4

Lincoln built a great vehicle! The 30-way seat with the built-in message was genius. The comfort is unbelievable. It's the first time since 2001 that this vehicle has been built. The Lincoln Continental is truly a luxury automobile.

I am disappointed with the car. The GPS maps are outdated by 4-5 years, the USB ports malfunction, and the front seats do not provide the expected cooling effect. The seats draw air in, but do not blow out cool air. I have not encountered this issue before and would not consider purchasing this car again.

I have had people stop me to tell me how good looking this car is. I absolutely love driving it. It's so plush, yet has enough get up and go when I hit the gas to satisfy this former Dodge Charger owner. The only criticism I have is a single rough shift between first and second that happens occasionally when coasting, but otherwise, it works like a dream.

The extra cost is definitely worth it! We tend to keep our cars for a long time, and the quality of this Lincoln Continental tells me that it will last just like our Towncar did.

  5. Bart Nicolas 2024-09-26

It's a very dependable car. I've actually received more compliments from strangers on this car than any of my previous ones. And that's saying something, considering I'm over 65.
