The Lincoln Continental is a series of mid-sized and full-sized luxury cars produced between 1939 and 2020 by Lincoln, a division of the American automaker Ford Motor Company. The model line was introduced following the construction of a personal vehicle for Edsel Ford, who commissioned a coachbuilt 1939 Lincoln-Zephyr convertible, developed as a vacation vehicle to attract potential Lincoln buyers. In what would give the model line its name, the exterior was given European "continental" styling elements, including a rear-mounted spare tire.

In production for over 55 years across nine different decades, Lincoln has produced ten generations of the Continental. Within the Lincoln model line, the Continental has served several roles ranging from its flagship to its base-trim sedan. From 1961 to 1976, Lincoln sold the Continental as its exclusive model line. The model line has also gone on hiatus three times. From 1949 to 1955, the nameplate was briefly retired. In 1981, the Continental was renamed the Lincoln Town Car to accommodate the 1982 seventh-generation Continental. After 2002, the Continental was retired, largely replaced by the Lincoln MKS in 2009; in 2017, the tenth-generation Continental replaced the MKS.

As part of its entry into full-scale production, the first-generation Continental was the progenitor of an entirely new automotive segment, the personal luxury car. Following World War II, the segment evolved into coupes and convertibles larger than sports cars and grand touring cars with an emphasis on features, styling, and comfort over performance and handling. From 1956 to 1957, the Continental nameplate was the namesake of the short-lived Continental Division, marketing the 1956–1957 Continental Mark II as the worldwide flagship of Ford Motor Company; as a second successor, Ford introduced the Continental Mark series in 1969, produced over six generations to 1998.

Along with the creation of the personal luxury car segment, the Lincoln Continental marked the zenith of several designs in American automotive history. The Continental is the final American vehicle line with a factory-produced V12 engine (1948), the final four-door convertible (1967), and the final model line to undergo downsizing (for the 1980 model year).

American production of the Continental and MKZ, its only two sedans, ended in 2020 thereby making Lincoln a crossover/SUV-only brand in the USA. After it was discontinued in Lincoln's home market, Ford indicated that it planned to move Continental production to China.

Common 1999 Lincoln Continental problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 1999 Lincoln Continental, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Suspension System Issues: Owners have complained about the failure of the front coil springs, which can range from annoying to severe. This issue can lead to sudden tire deflation, potentially causing loss of vehicle control and accidents. There are also reports of coil springs corroding and failing, indicating quality or durability issues, possibly due to environmental factors or inadequate rust protection.
  2. Airbag Problems: Numerous complaints were documented regarding unexpected deployment of frontal airbags while driving at low speeds or even without any collision. This unexpected deployment caught many drivers by surprise, posing a risk of road accidents.
  3. Vehicle Speed Control: The 1999 Lincoln Continental faced issues with vehicle speed control, similar to earlier models. Unintended acceleration was reported, with some owners suggesting a possible link to the cruise control system. Additionally, there were reports of the accelerator pedal getting stuck, not responding to braking attempts, which could lead to high-speed collisions.
  4. Transmission System: Some owners reported issues with the transmission system, including leaks and the need for replacements after around 55,000 miles. Mechanics had to remove the transmission and replace faulty seals, costing owners around $1,200 to resolve these problems.
  5. Dome Light Malfunction: Several owners reported that the dome light stayed on for no apparent reason, often due to a triggered door ajar light. This issue could be resolved by spraying a water-displacing spray on the door locks and latches.
  6. Power Steering System: Complaints included sudden cuts in power steering while driving, which usually returned to normal after restarting the engine. Replacing faulty steering components typically resolved this issue.

These problems highlight various safety and functionality concerns that owners of the 1999 Lincoln Continental have faced. Addressing these issues promptly and effectively is crucial to ensure the continued reliability and safety of the vehicle.

Negative 1999 Lincoln Continental car reviews

  1. Wayne Strosin 2024-08-18

This car offers a lot of value for the money, with many convenient and luxurious features. The ride is smooth and enjoyable, and the powerful InTech V8 engine easily overcomes the Michelin tires. The traction control works pretty well, ensuring a safe and comfortable ride. While the handling is decent, it may not be up to par with Lexus or Benz. The quality is quite good for an American-made car, although it may not match up to the high-end Japanese models. At a price range of $9000-$13000, you won't find a car with as many features that is nicer than this one.

  2. Josh Langosh 2024-08-15

Hi there! It seems like the switches for the interior lights might be becoming defective.

  3. Jeremie Zemlak 2024-04-28

Although I have experienced some challenges during the two years of owning this pre-owned car, I am confident in my decision to address the issues and move forward. Fortunately, the A/C issue was covered under warranty. While the warranty has since expired, I am taking proactive steps to have the transmission rebuilt with a low mileage replacement. While I have been disappointed with the quality of this car, I remain optimistic that it will serve me well in the future. While this is my first American car, I am open to exploring other options in the future. I believe that FORD motor has the potential to improve their priorities and produce higher quality vehicles. Despite the challenges, I still appreciate the aesthetic appeal of this car.

  4. Jeff Balistreri 2024-01-14

There seems to be a lot of road noise, but the ride is smooth on the highway. However, it may not perform as well on uneven side roads. Additionally, the seat can be quite uncomfortable on long drives.

  5. Willard Hammes 2024-01-10

Although my experience with my 99 Lincoln has been less than ideal due to multiple issues with the alternator, AC compressor, fuel pump, and rear suspension, I am confident in my decision to return the vehicle. Despite the lengthy visits to the service department, I am grateful for their efforts in diagnosing and resolving the issues. As my lease comes to an end, I have decided to explore other options for my next vehicle purchase. Thank you, Lincoln, for the opportunity to lease your product.

Positive 1999 Lincoln Continental car reviews

  1. Rudolph Bahringer 2024-11-21

It is unfortunate to hear that this car model will no longer be produced. However, it is important to note that during its production, it has proven to be an exceptional vehicle. Its impressive performance, sleek design, and efficient fuel consumption make it a top choice for car enthusiasts.

  2. Will Grimes 2024-11-03

I have owned several Lincolns in my life, but the 1999 Continental has exceeded every expectation. Its comfort and beauty meet any expectation of luxury and its performance and handling are outstanding. I can't wait to see what Lincoln has in store for the 2004 model!

  3. Peter Goodwin 2024-11-01

I recently purchased a 1999 Lincoln Carter Towncar from a friend who unfortunately lost his wife. The car only had 12,000 miles on it and I have been pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it is to drive. Not only does it get good mileage, but it also has a surprisingly small turn radius. Additionally, I have found it to be very easy to maintain.

  4. Evans Littel 2024-10-28

I can tell you really love your Lincoln Continental! It's great to hear that you've owned many cars, but this one is your absolute favorite.

  5. Sigmund Anderson 2024-10-26

I've owned several Ford products in the past, but this one has been a mixed bag. While it excels in luxury, its performance quality leaves much to be desired. Unfortunately, after only 71,000 miles, I had to replace the transmission for $2200.00. Despite the torque converter failure that caused the damage, Ford seems indecisive about whether to rebuild or replace it. Additionally, I've had issues with power seat tracks and outside power mirrors failing, as well as two of the eight coils failing at less than 50K miles, each costing $120.00 to replace. Surprisingly, I never had that much trouble with my Mercury Topaz with 200K miles, my F-150 with 125K miles, or my Mercury Cougar with 130K miles.
