1992 Lincoln Continental problems
The Lincoln Continental is a series of mid-sized and full-sized luxury cars produced between 1939 and 2020 by Lincoln, a division of the American automaker Ford Motor Company. The model line was introduced following the construction of a personal vehicle for Edsel Ford, who commissioned a coachbuilt 1939 Lincoln-Zephyr convertible, developed as a vacation vehicle to attract potential Lincoln buyers. In what would give the model line its name, the exterior was given European "continental" styling elements, including a rear-mounted spare tire.
In production for over 55 years across nine different decades, Lincoln has produced ten generations of the Continental. Within the Lincoln model line, the Continental has served several roles ranging from its flagship to its base-trim sedan. From 1961 to 1976, Lincoln sold the Continental as its exclusive model line. The model line has also gone on hiatus three times. From 1949 to 1955, the nameplate was briefly retired. In 1981, the Continental was renamed the Lincoln Town Car to accommodate the 1982 seventh-generation Continental. After 2002, the Continental was retired, largely replaced by the Lincoln MKS in 2009; in 2017, the tenth-generation Continental replaced the MKS.
As part of its entry into full-scale production, the first-generation Continental was the progenitor of an entirely new automotive segment, the personal luxury car. Following World War II, the segment evolved into coupes and convertibles larger than sports cars and grand touring cars with an emphasis on features, styling, and comfort over performance and handling. From 1956 to 1957, the Continental nameplate was the namesake of the short-lived Continental Division, marketing the 1956–1957 Continental Mark II as the worldwide flagship of Ford Motor Company; as a second successor, Ford introduced the Continental Mark series in 1969, produced over six generations to 1998.
Along with the creation of the personal luxury car segment, the Lincoln Continental marked the zenith of several designs in American automotive history. The Continental is the final American vehicle line with a factory-produced V12 engine (1948), the final four-door convertible (1967), and the final model line to undergo downsizing (for the 1980 model year).
American production of the Continental and MKZ, its only two sedans, ended in 2020 thereby making Lincoln a crossover/SUV-only brand in the USA. After it was discontinued in Lincoln's home market, Ford indicated that it planned to move Continental production to China.

Common 1992 Lincoln Continental problems
Based on the information gathered from various sources regarding common problems with the 1992 Lincoln Continental reported by owners, several issues stand out:
- Sagging Suspension: A common issue across several model years of the Lincoln Continental is a sagging suspension. This problem is often caused by air suspension struts or drier leaking air, which can lead to air suspension compressor failure if not addressed promptly.
- Rough Idling and Engine Stalling: Owners have reported problems with rough idling and engine stalling, particularly in the 2002 model year. These issues are often linked to exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system problems, which can cause the engine to stall. Proper diagnosis and repair by a trusted mechanic are recommended for this issue.
- PCV Grommet Vacuum Leaks: Vehicles from model years 1995-2002 are prone to PCV grommet vacuum leaks in the Lincoln Continental. These leaks can result in rough engine performance and trigger the check engine light. Replacing the PCV hose has been effective in resolving this issue for most affected vehicles.
- Transmission Problems: Transmission-related issues are common in several Lincoln Continental model years. Owners have reported having to replace their transmissions after a certain mileage, with some experiencing leaks. Repairs for these transmission problems can be costly, with owners spending around $1,200 to address these issues.
These common problems with the 1992 Lincoln Continental highlight some of the key issues that owners have faced with this vehicle. Addressing these concerns promptly and with the help of qualified mechanics can help maintain the performance and reliability of the car.

1992 Lincoln Continental recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 1992 Lincoln Continental.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, KANSAS, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEBRASKA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGNIA, AND WISCONSIN. THE REAR LOWER SUBFRAME MOUNT PLATE NUT CAN EXPERIENCE STRESS CORROSION CRACKING IF SUBJECTED TO LONG TERM EXPOSURE TO ROAD SALTS. THIS CAN RESULT IN FRACTURE AND LOSS OF THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE SUBFRAME MOUNT ATTACHMENT. DETACHMENT OF THE BODY MOUNTS AT THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME, WHICH SUPPORTS THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION, ALLOWS THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME TO DROP.
- Consequence: IF BOTH REAR CORNERS DROP, STEERING WOULD BECOME SUDDENLY VERY DIFFICULT, AFFECTING VEHICLE CONTROL AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL SUBFRAME REAR MOUNT BOLTS, REINFORCEMENT PLATES, AND PLATE NUTS.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 3.8L ENGINES AND ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE FOLLOWING STATES: ALASKA, COLORADO, IOWA, IDAHO, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KANSAS, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, MONTANA, NORTH DAKOTA, NEBRASKA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, SOUTH DAKOTA, VERMONT, WISCONSIN, AND WYOMING. WATER CAN ACCUMULATE WITHIN THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE CONDUIT. IF ENOUGH WATER ACCUMULATES, IT COULD FREEZE WITHIN A LOW AREA OF THE CABLE ROUTING WHEN EXPOSED TO A LONG TERM COLD SOAK AT TEMPERATURES AT LEAST SEVERAL DEGREES BELOW FREEZING.
- Consequence: DRIVER CONTROL OF VEHICLE SPEED USING THE SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM OR THE ACCELERATOR CONTROL SYSTEM WOULD BE DIMINISHED INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL ADD A BOOT TO THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:COOLING SYSTEM:FAN
- Summary: THESE VEHICLES ARE ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE FOLLOWING STATES: ALASKA, IOWA, MINNESOTA, NEBRASKA, NORTH DAKOTA, AND SOUTH DAKOTA. THE VEHICLES INVOLVED ARE 1992-1994 TEMPO/TOPAZ VEHICLES WITH 3.0L ENGINES; 1994 TEMPO/TOPAZ WITH 2.3L ENGINES; 1992-1995 TAURUS/SABLE WITH 3.8L ENGINES; 1994-1995 TAURUS/SABLE WITH 3.0L ENGINES AND 1992-1994 LINCOLN CONTINENTAL VEHICLES WITH 3.8L ENGINES. DURING HIGH WINDS, HEAVY, BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW, AND LOW TEMPERATURES, THE ENGINE COOLING FAN CAN BECOME BLOCKED OR FROZEN WITH SNOW. THE FAN MOTOR MAY NOT ROTATE AND COULD OVERHEAT.
- Consequence: THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE SMOKE OR FLAMES FROM THE FAN AND/OR SHROUD, THE FAN ELECTRICAL WIRING, OR THE FAN MOTOR RESULTING IN A VEHICLE FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL AN ELECTRICAL JUMPER HARNESS CONTAINING AN AUTOMATIC RESETTING CIRCUIT BREAKER TO PROTECT THE FAN MOTOR LOW SPEED CIRCUITRY FROM OVERHEATING.

This car rides great! I really enjoyed it, especially compared to my other cars. However, I do wish they would stop using those air control shocks and just put a good pair of Monroe shocks instead. I understand that the car company may lose money on maintenance repairs, but paying two thousand for front and rear shock replacement is a rip off.
-
I am thrilled with my car! Even though I haven't needed any major repairs during the time I've owned it, I wouldn't hesitate to have them done. This is definitely one of the best cars I've ever owned.
-
I own a 1991 Lincoln Continental in Dark Plum. I have been the only owner of this car and still own it to this day in 2009. It looks like it just came off the showroom floor! Why? Because I take care of it. Yes, it has needed some things over the years, but that is the case with any car. There is no other car out there that has its ride and performance. It is built very well and will keep you safe if ever in an accident. If you have one, take care of it! They are definitely worth it!
-
The car rides nicely and has a great engine. It also has good gas mileage for a big car, averaging 19.5. Additionally, there is plenty of room, making it a great option for larger individuals.
-
Your vehicle has been an excellent machine!

I purchased this car at a great price, but unfortunately, it had some issues as it was a used car. One day, while driving, the brake light came on, and I was concerned. However, I did not feel anything wrong with the brakes. Suddenly, after 20 minutes, the brake pedal stuck to the floor due to an electric brake booster failure. Unfortunately, the repair costs are quite high, with parts costing around $2000 and labor around $600, and only the dealer can fix it. As a result, my investment in the car has gone to waste. If anyone is interested in buying a car that needs brake work, please let me know. :)

Hi there! I'm so excited to hear that you've just purchased a 1991 Lincoln with the idea of refurbishing it! From what you've shared, it sounds like you had a great experience driving it for about 200 miles. I'm glad to hear that you found the handling impressive and the interior quite comfortable. As a tall person myself, I know how important leg room can be, so it's great to hear that you found it pleasing. Best of luck with your refurbishing project!
Douglas Stoltenberg 2024-08-20
Hey there! I noticed you've got a lot of stuff to carry around. Luckily, this car has a really spacious trunk that can fit all your tools and more. Just a heads up though, if you're planning on carrying a lot of weight, you might notice a slightly rougher ride, especially if the suspension is out. Hope this helps!
Mustafa Dickinson 2024-07-15
This car has had some issues since the day of purchase, but all necessary repairs have been made, including a new air conditioner, new heads, new air shocks, and new hood shocks. Despite these initial challenges, I still appreciate the quality of Lincoln vehicles.

This seems like a great car for the price!
