Lincoln Continental 1991 problems

The Lincoln Continental is a series of mid-sized and full-sized luxury cars produced between 1939 and 2020 by Lincoln, a division of the American automaker Ford Motor Company. The model line was introduced following the construction of a personal vehicle for Edsel Ford, who commissioned a coachbuilt 1939 Lincoln-Zephyr convertible, developed as a vacation vehicle to attract potential Lincoln buyers. In what would give the model line its name, the exterior was given European "continental" styling elements, including a rear-mounted spare tire.

In production for over 55 years across nine different decades, Lincoln has produced ten generations of the Continental. Within the Lincoln model line, the Continental has served several roles ranging from its flagship to its base-trim sedan. From 1961 to 1976, Lincoln sold the Continental as its exclusive model line. The model line has also gone on hiatus three times. From 1949 to 1955, the nameplate was briefly retired. In 1981, the Continental was renamed the Lincoln Town Car to accommodate the 1982 seventh-generation Continental. After 2002, the Continental was retired, largely replaced by the Lincoln MKS in 2009; in 2017, the tenth-generation Continental replaced the MKS.

As part of its entry into full-scale production, the first-generation Continental was the progenitor of an entirely new automotive segment, the personal luxury car. Following World War II, the segment evolved into coupes and convertibles larger than sports cars and grand touring cars with an emphasis on features, styling, and comfort over performance and handling. From 1956 to 1957, the Continental nameplate was the namesake of the short-lived Continental Division, marketing the 1956–1957 Continental Mark II as the worldwide flagship of Ford Motor Company; as a second successor, Ford introduced the Continental Mark series in 1969, produced over six generations to 1998.

Along with the creation of the personal luxury car segment, the Lincoln Continental marked the zenith of several designs in American automotive history. The Continental is the final American vehicle line with a factory-produced V12 engine (1948), the final four-door convertible (1967), and the final model line to undergo downsizing (for the 1980 model year).

American production of the Continental and MKZ, its only two sedans, ended in 2020 thereby making Lincoln a crossover/SUV-only brand in the USA. After it was discontinued in Lincoln's home market, Ford indicated that it planned to move Continental production to China.

Lincoln Continental 1991 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the Lincoln Continental 1991.

1998-12-16
  • Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, KANSAS, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEBRASKA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGNIA, AND WISCONSIN. THE REAR LOWER SUBFRAME MOUNT PLATE NUT CAN EXPERIENCE STRESS CORROSION CRACKING IF SUBJECTED TO LONG TERM EXPOSURE TO ROAD SALTS. THIS CAN RESULT IN FRACTURE AND LOSS OF THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE SUBFRAME MOUNT ATTACHMENT. DETACHMENT OF THE BODY MOUNTS AT THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME, WHICH SUPPORTS THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION, ALLOWS THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME TO DROP.
  • Consequence: IF BOTH REAR CORNERS DROP, STEERING WOULD BECOME SUDDENLY VERY DIFFICULT, AFFECTING VEHICLE CONTROL AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL SUBFRAME REAR MOUNT BOLTS, REINFORCEMENT PLATES, AND PLATE NUTS.
1997-02-26
  • Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 3.8L ENGINES AND ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE FOLLOWING STATES: ALASKA, COLORADO, IOWA, IDAHO, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KANSAS, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, MONTANA, NORTH DAKOTA, NEBRASKA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, SOUTH DAKOTA, VERMONT, WISCONSIN, AND WYOMING. WATER CAN ACCUMULATE WITHIN THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE CONDUIT. IF ENOUGH WATER ACCUMULATES, IT COULD FREEZE WITHIN A LOW AREA OF THE CABLE ROUTING WHEN EXPOSED TO A LONG TERM COLD SOAK AT TEMPERATURES AT LEAST SEVERAL DEGREES BELOW FREEZING.
  • Consequence: DRIVER CONTROL OF VEHICLE SPEED USING THE SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM OR THE ACCELERATOR CONTROL SYSTEM WOULD BE DIMINISHED INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL ADD A BOOT TO THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE.
1991-08-06
  • Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:DISC:ROTOR
  • Summary: FRONT DISC BRAKE ROTORS OF THE SUBJECT VEHICLES MAY EXPERIENCE SEVERE CORROSION IF OPERATED IN AREAS WHERE CALCIUM CHLORIDE AND SODIUM CHLORIDE ARE USED EXTENSIVELY.
  • Consequence: SEVERELY CORRODED ROTORS MAY FRACTURE OR SEPARATE NEARTHE INNER EDGES OF THE BRAKE DISCS RESULTING IN REDUCED BRAKING EFFECTIVENESS,HIGHER THAN NORMAL PEDAL EFFORTS, LOUD GRINDING NOISES, AND MODERATE PULLS WHENTHE BRAKES ARE APPLIED. REDUCED BRAKING EFFECTIVENESS MAY INCREASE MINIMUMSTOPPING DISTANCES, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN AN ACCIDENT.
  • Remedy: REPLACE FRONT BRAKE ROTORS WITH FULL CAST FRONT BRAKE ROTORS.

Negative Lincoln Continental 1991 car reviews

  1. Bruce Mitchell 2024-10-09

I bought this car for $4500, but ended up spending another $5000 on the transmission, engine, and air shocks. Unfortunately, it hasn't been the best investment and I wouldn't recommend a Lincoln to anyone.

  2. Nat Bradtke 2024-10-03

Hi there! I'm so excited to hear that you've just purchased a 1991 Lincoln with the idea of refurbishing it! From what you've shared, it sounds like you had a great experience driving it for about 200 miles. I'm glad to hear that you found the handling impressive and the interior quite comfortable. As a tall person myself, I know how important leg room can be, so it's great to hear that you found it pleasing. Best of luck with your refurbishing project!

  3. Gaetano Hegmann 2024-10-01

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you've been driving this car for a year and are planning on selling it soon. I just wanted to let you know that I think it's a really cool car! I love the HID lights and chrome wheels - they make it look awesome. Even though the car isn't brand new, the body is still in great shape and looks really good. I did notice that there were a few things that needed to be fixed, like the transmission, head gaskets, and air ride o-rings, but I'm sure those are just minor issues that can be easily taken care of. Overall, I think you have a great car and I wish you the best of luck with the sale!

  4. Hoyt Bauch 2024-07-21

From the start, I have had to replace the engine mounts, air conditioning, air ride, radio, electric windows, electric door locks, headliner, electric antenna, and painted the exterior. Unfortunately, the AC and door locks are broken again, and it needs a new transmission. It's been a frustrating experience, and I don't think I'll be buying another car like this again.

  5. Trystan Prohaska 2024-03-16

The auto leveling system sometimes rides at full height, and the A/C buttons design is poor. Additionally, the AM/FM radio has stopped working, and the temperature control damper sticks. The OEM transmission has been recalled, and the rear windows have also stopped working. The front passenger window works intermittently. Furthermore, the front brake rotors tend to warp when the brakes are applied with more than normal force, such as in a panic stop. The digital speedometer also acts up, indicating 8-12mph all the time, whether the car is moving or not. Lastly, the airbag warning light is flashing. According to Kelly Blue Book, the car is valued at $1650 in fair condition, but imagine the depreciation in poor condition. Thank you for considering this information.

Positive Lincoln Continental 1991 car reviews

  1. Jocelyn Carroll 2024-11-29

I own a 1991 Lincoln Continental in Dark Plum. I have been the only owner of this car and still own it to this day in 2009. It looks like it just came off the showroom floor! Why? Because I take care of it. Yes, it has needed some things over the years, but that is the case with any car. There is no other car out there that has its ride and performance. It is built very well and will keep you safe if ever in an accident. If you have one, take care of it! They are definitely worth it!

  2. Eugene Farrell 2024-06-08

The car rides nicely and has a great engine. It also has good gas mileage for a big car, averaging 19.5. Additionally, there is plenty of room, making it a great option for larger individuals.

  3. Torey McClure 2024-04-24

Fun to own and drive, replacement parts for it are easily available. It's a very good road car!!

  4. Nicola Rowe 2024-04-18

This car rides great! I really enjoyed it, especially compared to my other cars. However, I do wish they would stop using those air control shocks and just put a good pair of Monroe shocks instead. I understand that the car company may lose money on maintenance repairs, but paying two thousand for front and rear shock replacement is a rip off.

  5. Solon Volkman 2024-02-17

The Lincoln Continental is a blast to drive, but there are a few issues to keep in mind, such as the air ride system, factory sound system, and transmissions. Personally, I've owned three and the only trouble I had was with the air ride. However, I highly recommend test driving one for yourself to truly experience the joy of driving this car.
