The Lincoln Continental is a series of mid-sized and full-sized luxury cars produced between 1939 and 2020 by Lincoln, a division of the American automaker Ford Motor Company. The model line was introduced following the construction of a personal vehicle for Edsel Ford, who commissioned a coachbuilt 1939 Lincoln-Zephyr convertible, developed as a vacation vehicle to attract potential Lincoln buyers. In 1981, the Continental was renamed the Lincoln Town Car to accommodate the 1982 seventh-generation Continental. After 2002, the Continental was retired, largely replaced by the Lincoln MKS in 2009; in 2017, the tenth-generation Continental replaced the MKS.
As part of its entry into full-scale production, the first-generation Continental was the progenitor of an entirely new automotive segment, the personal luxury car. Following World War II, the segment evolved into coupes and convertibles larger than sports cars and grand touring cars with an emphasis on features, styling, and comfort over performance and handling. From 1956 to 1957, the Continental nameplate was the namesake of the short-lived Continental Division, marketing the 1956–1957 Continental Mark II as the worldwide flagship of Ford Motor Company; as a second successor, Ford introduced the Continental Mark series in 1969, produced over six generations to 1998.
Along with the creation of the personal luxury car segment, the Lincoln Continental marked the zenith of several designs in American automotive history. The Continental is the final American vehicle line with a factory-produced V12 engine (1948), the final four-door convertible (1967), and the final model line to undergo downsizing (for the 1980 model year).
American production of the Continental and MKZ, its only two sedans, ended in 2020 thereby making Lincoln a crossover/SUV-only brand in the USA. After it was discontinued in Lincoln's home market, Ford indicated that it planned to move Continental production to China.

- Summary: THE INSIDE LIGHTS OF MY 1997 LINCOLN CONTINENTAL WHICH WAS PURCHASED ON FEB. 28, 1997, STARTED COMING ON WHILE WE WERE DRIVING THE CAR AND WOULDN'T GO OUT. IT ALSO OCCURRED WHEN WE TURNED OFF THE CAR. WE WOULD TURN OFF ONE INSIDE LIGHT AND ANOTHER WOULD COME ON AND WE HAD TO PLAY AROUND WITH IT TO TRY TO GET IT OFF. THIS RESULTED IN OUR BATTERY BEING DRAINED SEVERAL TIMES. WE TOOK IT TO A REPAIR SHOP AND ON 1-19-05 THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE LIGHT CONTROL MODULE, THE PART ALONE COST US $556.42 AND AN ADDITIONAL $90 TO FIND OUT THAT THE MODULE WAS BAD AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. OUR MECHANIC ADVISED US THAT THERE HAD BEEN SAFETY RECALLS ON THE LIGHT CONTROL MODULES FOR 1995 AND 1996 LINCOLN CONTINENTAL CARS LIKE OUR'S AND THEY EXPECTED THAT A SIMILAR SAFETY RECALL SHOULD BE DONE FOR THE 1997 LINCOLN CONTINENTAL WHICH IS THE ONE WE OWN. THE PROBLEM BEGAN OCCURING THIS PAST SUMMER AROUND JULY 2004 AND HAS CONTINUED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS WHERE WE HAVE HAD TO JUMP START THE CAR FOR A TEMPORARY FIX. *AK

AND RECENTLY HAD MY A/C CONDENSER REPLACED ALONG WITH A TUNE-UP. IN THE PROCESS, THE THERMOSTAT WAS REPLACED. IT WAS A GENUINE MOTOR CRAFT PART. AFTER INSTALLATION, THE CAR OVERHEATED BECAUSE THE NEW THERMOSTAT WAS DEFECTIVE. MY MECHANIC REPLACED IT WITH ANOTHER NEW THERMOSTAT AND THE CAR OVER HEATED AGAIN. THE SECOND THERMOSTAT WAS FAULTY. THE MECHANIC WAS NOT UPSET BECAUSE HE STATED FORD/LINCOLN PAYS MECHANICS FOR LABOR WHENEVER A REPLACEMENT PART IS DEFECTIVE. SO, MECHANICS DON'T CARE, ONLY THE CONSUMER SUFFERS. ONE MECHANIC ADMITTED THIS HAPPENS QUITE OFTEN, THE SUPPLY PEOPLE WILL SIMPLY PLACE A DEFECTIVE PART BACK ON THE SHELF. THE RESULT IS DEALERS WANT TO DISCOURAGE PEOPLE FROM REPAIRING FORDS/LINCOLNS BY MAKING CONSUMERS GO BACK FOR REPEATED SERVICE CALLS (MOTOR CRAFT THERMOSTAT). *NM

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 1997 Lincoln Continental.

- Summary: Bosch Brake Components LLC (Bosch) is recalling certain aftermarket replacement front brake pads, models Bosch QuietCast BC598 and BP765, Bosch Blue BE598 and BE598H, Prostop PD598 and PD765M, Duralast Gold DG598, Duralast MKD598, Stop Master ST598, UltraStop ULT598, UltraLife MX598 and MX765, BrakeBest MKD765, and Prostop Platinum PGD598. These brake pads, manufactured October 1, 2014, to October 31, 2015 are intended for use on 2001-2007 Ford Taurus, 2001-2005 Mercury Sable, 1995-1999 Ford Taurus SHO, 1995-2002 Lincoln Continental, and 1993-1998 Lincoln Mark VIII vehicles. The brake pad shim may shift out of position causing the shim to contact the brake disc resulting in damage to the disc.
- Consequence: A damaged or broken brake disc may reduce a vehicle's braking power, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Bosch will instruct the owners how to have the affected brake pads replaced, free of charge. The recall began on May 26, 2016. Owners may contact Bosch customer service at 1-888-715-3616.

- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:GEAR POSITION INDICATION (PRNDL)
- Summary: THE PARK PAWL ABUTMENT BRACKET HAS A SHARP EDGE WHICH CAN CAUSE THE PARKING PAWL TO HANG UP AND NOT ENGAGE THE PARK GEAR. THIS WOULD ALLOW THE VEHICLE TO MOVE EVEN THOUGH THE GEAR SHIFT INDICATOR SHOWS THAT THE VEHICLE IS IN PARK.
- Consequence: UNINTENDED AND UNEXPECTED VEHICLE MOVEMENT CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY AND PROPERTY DAMAGE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE PARK PAWL ABUTMENT BRACKET.

I must say that my Lincoln is the best car I have ever owned. The ride and performance are exceptional, and there is nothing like a big luxury car. The black paint still looks decent despite the 110,000 miles on it. I have recently experienced the rear-view mirror problem that everyone else seems to be having. Additionally, the front passenger door has a bad connection, which causes the door to show ajar when it is not. Although this is not a big deal, the interior lights come on when stopped. If anyone can tell me how to replace the rear-view mirror economically, I would greatly appreciate it. I would definitely buy another Lincoln. It's a great car!

This car is a great choice! It's dependable, good on gas, and has plenty of luxury. I found the best buy for my money was this car, which I bought off lease with just a few miles on it. It's incredibly comfortable and can easily get onto a highway with short ramps. Surprisingly, it even got better gas mileage than advertised. Over the course of 3 years, I didn't need any service beyond the norm. Plus, with 5 shoulder straps, I felt that this was a very safe car to have kids in.

This is my second Lincoln. My first one was a 93 Town Car. So far, this car has exceeded my expectations. Although the rear view mirror needs to be replaced, it is still useable. The dealership replaced both O2 sensors that were needed. I am thoroughly enjoying driving this car. The steering is effortless and the ride is as plush as stated. At a price tag of 6,200.00, it has been a bargain so far.

I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the pick up and reliability of the vehicle. The pearl finish looked excellent, although it's a shame that there was some paint peeling on the door bumpers. It was a smart choice to select areas for fiberglass, which eliminated any potential rust areas. Additionally, the auto recall on the seats was enormously helpful, especially since you've driven some without. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

I'm only 18 and this is already the second car I've gone through. My first car, a '98 Camry, had a blown transmission, so I found this one on Craigslist. The only positive thing I can say is that I only spent $900 on it. Unfortunately, I've had a lot of issues with it. The day after I bought it, the driver's window stopped working, and a few days later, the O2 sensors went out. Within the following weeks, I had to deal with a faulty alarm and a broken air suspension. Today, I bought another car, making this my third car in just one year of driving. I thought the Continental would be a great buy with its luxurious feel, but it turned out to be a disappointment. This weekend, I'll be junking the car and getting what I can for it. I put 1,128 miles on it, from 144,590 to 145,718.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. Overall, I really enjoy driving it and think it looks great. However, I have been having some trouble with the alarm going off unexpectedly. I've taken it to the dealer twice, but unfortunately they haven't been able to replicate the issue. I think it might be related to the ignition, because the alarm goes off when I turn off the car and the door ajar light doesn't come on.
