1989 Ford Aerostar problems

ford logo

The Ford Aerostar is a range of vans that was manufactured by Ford from the 1986 to the 1997 model years. The first minivan produced by Ford, the model line was marketed against the Chevrolet Astro/GMC Safari and the first two generations of the Chrysler minivans. Introduced shortly before the Ford Taurus, the Aerostar derived its name from its slope-nosed "one-box" exterior (although over six feet tall, the body of the Aerostar retained a drag coefficient of Cd=0.37, besting the Lincoln Mark VII).

The first minivan powered exclusively by V6 engines, the Aerostar was also one of the first vehicles to introduce all-wheel drive to the segment in North America. The model line was sold in multiple configurations, including passenger and cargo vans, along with an extended-length body. Sold primarily in the United States and Canada, a limited number of vehicles were exported outside of North America.

The Aerostar was replaced for the 1995 model year by the front-wheel drive Ford Windstar; Ford sold both model lines concurrently through the 1997 model year. The role of the Aerostar cargo van was left unfilled, with the Ford Transit Connect serving as the closest successor (in terms of size and capability).

For its entire production, the model line was assembled by the St. Louis Assembly Plant in Hazelwood, Missouri. In total, 2,029,577 vehicles were produced across a single generation.

Common 1989 Ford Aerostar problems

The Ford Aerostar, produced from 1986 to 1997, is known for its spacious interior, versatility, and durability. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported over the years.

  • Engine Issues: The Aerostar's 3.0L inline-six engine is known for having issues with timing chains and guides. These components can wear out or break, causing the engine to run poorly or not at all. The 2.3L four-cylinder engine, while less common, can also have issues with head gaskets, which may leak or fail, leading to coolant loss and overheating.
  • Transmission Problems: The Aerostar's automatic transmission, particularly the AX4S, is known for having issues with the torque converter and solenoids. These problems can cause the transmission to slip, shift roughly, or even fail completely. The manual transmission, while generally more reliable, can also have issues with synchronizers, leading to difficulty shifting or grinding gears.
  • Electrical Issues: The Aerostar's electrical system, particularly the wiring harness, can degrade over time, leading to issues with various electrical components. This can cause problems with the lights, gauges, and even the engine's ignition system. In some cases, this can lead to a fire hazard if the wiring insulation is damaged or worn.
  • Suspension and Steering Issues: The Aerostar's front suspension, particularly the bushings and ball joints, can wear out over time, leading to a loose or unstable feeling while driving. The power steering system can also develop leaks, making it difficult to turn the steering wheel. The rear suspension, while generally more robust, can also have issues with the leaf springs and shocks, leading to a rough ride or difficulty towing.
  • Body and Interior Issues: The Aerostar's body and interior can also have issues, particularly with rust and wear. The plastic bumpers, while durable, can crack or fade over time, and the interior can wear out or develop tears. The body, particularly in regions with road salt, can develop rust issues, particularly around the wheel wells and rocker panels.

In summary, the Ford Aerostar, while known for its spacious interior, versatility, and durability, can have several common issues, including engine problems, transmission issues, electrical problems, suspension and steering issues, and body and interior issues. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or mitigate these issues, but owners should be aware of these potential problems when purchasing or maintaining an Aerostar.

STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2001-11-05
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1FMCA11U2KZ
  • Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE ALTERNATOR FAILED SHORT CIRCUIT. MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF CURRENT PASSED FROM THE BATTERY THROUGH THE ALTERNATOR, WHICH BURST INTO FLAMES. THE FAULT CAUSED THE ENGINE TO STALL DUE TO LACK OF IGNITION AND IT WAS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO STEER AND STOP THE VEHICLE AS A RESULT OF LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES. SMOKE WAS POURING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. WHEN I MANAGED TO STOP AND OPEN THE HOOD, THE ALTERNATOR, WHICH WAS GLOWING RED INSIDE, BURST INTO FLAMES AND SET FIRE TO CABLES AND RUBBER HOSES AROUND IT. I RECEIVED BURNS TO MY HANDS TRYING TO PUT THE FIRE OUT. LUCKY FOR ME ANOTHER MOTORIST STOPPED AND HE HAD AN EXTINGUISHER. I HAVE NOW HAD TWO FIRES OF THIS TYPE, ONE ON EACH OF MY VEHICLES. YESTERDAY I WENT TO AN ALTERNATOR REMANUFACTURING COMPANY HERE IN MONTERREY, AND THE MANGER TOLD ME THAT HE HAS HAD FIVE ENGINE BAY FIRES IN AEROSTAR MINIVANS IN RECENT MONTHS. IN THE 'GOOD OLD DAYS' UNDERSTAND THERE WAS A FUSIBLE LINK BETWEEN THE ALTERNATOR CHARGING LINE AND THE BATTERY + TERMINAL. THERE SHOULD BE A FUSE IN THIS CIRCUIT BECAUSE IT IS CONNECTED DIRECTLY TO THE BATTERY!! NOT ONLY IS THE FIRE A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM, BUT THERE IS A SERIOUS RISK IN THE EVENT OF THIS FAULT, THAT THE OVERLOAD ON THE BATTERY WILL CAUSE IT TO BURST, SHOWERING EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE AROUND IT WITH HOT SULFURIC ACID. PLEASE NOTE ALTHOUGH THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED IN THE USA I AM CURRENTLY LIVING IN MONTERREY, MEXICO. MY PHONE IS 01152-8-349-7152 AND EMAIL IS [email protected]. *AK

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2001-08-09
  • VIN: 1FMCA11U2KZ
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: WHEN I WENT TO FILL UP WITH GAS, THE ATTENDANT CAUGHT MY ATTENTION AS I WAS ABOUT TO DRIVE OFF. A RIVER OF GASOLINE WAS POURING FROM BENEATH MY VAN. I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC WHO FOUND THE TANK HAD SPLIT ALONG THE SEAM WHERE THE TWO HALVES OF THE PLASTIC INJECTION MOULDINGS ARE JOINED TOGETHER. SINCE THIS INCIDENT I HAVE HAD AN IDENTICAL FAILURE ON MY OTHER VEHICLE OF THE SAME YEAR AND MODEL. I THINK FROM THIS, THAT IT'S PRETTY CLEAR THERE IS LIKELY TO BE A DESIGN OR MANUFACTURING FAULT IN THE GAS TANKS OF AEROSTAR VANS. NOTE, THE TANK ON ONE VEHICLE IS THE 16 GALLON VERSION, THE OTHER ONE IS THE LARGER 20 GALLON TYPE. SAME TYPE OF SPLIT OCCURRED ON EACH. I REGARD THIS AS A SERIOUS, LIFE-THREATENING FAULT. PLEASE NOTE MY ADDRESS DETAILS ARE FOR MEXICO, MY PHONE NUMBER IS [XXX] AND MY EMAIL IS [XXX]. *AK PARTS OF THIS DOCUMENT HAVE BEEN REDACTED TO PROTECT PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
